Mary L. Quinn (Wheelan)
January 4, 2010

Mary L. Quinn (Wheelan) of Narragansett and Providence died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, January 4, 2010 at the age of 89. Mary was born May 2, 1920 in Barrhead, Scotland to Daniel O'Connell Wheelan and Louisa Wheelan (Wade). Her beloved husband of 64 years, Thomas J. Quinn, Jr., died on August 1, 2009. Her son, Thomas J. Quinn, III, died on September 17, 2009. Her siblings, Kathleen Wheelan, Daniel Wheelan and Eileen Duguay, predeceased her.

Mary attended Blessed Sacrament School in its first grade class when it opened in 1925. She graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1937 as class valedictorian. She attended Rhode Island College of Education on a full scholarship, graduating in 1941. She taught as an elementary school teacher for over 25 years while raising her own 8 children, mostly teaching second grade, retiring from the Providence School System in 1985. Mary came from a family of educators and teaching was second nature to her.

Mary taught her children and grandchildren to read beginning at the age of 3, sending all of them to school with the ability to read. She loved reading, writing, painting, gardening, and enjoyed traveling to Ireland, Italy, and Greece, as well as returning several times to her native land, Scotland, with her family. She taught her children the love of music, playing the piano and the guitar herself, and the appreciation of the fine arts, attending performances of the opera with her family and assuring lessons in music and art for her children. Along with her husband, she provided her family with a joyful, warm family environment which particularly included their summer home in Narragansett, which she and Thomas built together. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren continue to gather there.

The greatest gift Mary gave her family was her abiding faith and deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. Mary, Tom and their children were among the first families in Rhode Island to participate in the Christian Family Movement in the 1960s. Mary is survived by her son's wife, Anne, and children Annie and Tara and by her seven daughters: Mary, her husband Thomas Burke and children, Laura, Tom, Alysh, Micaela, Daniel, and Patrick; Kathleen, her husband George Henry and children, Jessica, Letitia, and Bennett; Rosemary, her husband Ronald Dumont and children, Lorand, Rosemary, and Michelle; Teresa, her husband Bernard (Rick) Mancuso and son John; Elizabeth and her husband James Johnston and children, Rebecca, James, Elizabeth, and Catherine; Ellen Quinn of Providence; and Sara Quinn of Narragansett. She was the great grandmother of 15.
