Joe Lawrence Sr.

CHAPIN — Service for Joe Marion Lawrence, Sr., 84, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Chapin Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation or Chapin Baptist Church Child Development Center. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo.

Mr. Lawrence died Sunday, October 24, 2004. Born in Inman, he was a son of the late Herman Enoch and Katie McClure Lawrence. A graduate of The University of South Carolina, he retired after thirty-eight years as postmaster at USC.

Mr. Lawrence was a member of Chapin Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Celeste Hersey Lawrence; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe M., Jr. and Peggy Lawrence of Columbia and Chuck and Donna Lawrence of Irmo; sister, Rosamond Petty of Pickens; grandchildren, Todd, Cody, John and Jody Lawrence and Molly Roddey; step-grandchildren, Michael and Monica Chandler; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother, Herman Lawrence, Jr. and sister, Katherine Leonard.

Derrell Coates

CASSETT — Funeral services for Derrell Timothy “Tim” Coates, 39, will be held, Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at 3:00 pm from Baker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Born in Lancaster, SC, Mr. Coates, died, Thursday, October 21, 2004. He was the son of Linda McInvaille Bowers. Mr. Coates was a supervisor for Haier Refrigeration.

Mr. Coates is survived by his wife, Angelia Melissa Coates, of Cassatt, 3 sons, Derrell Timothy Coates, II, Brennen Tyler Coates and Dylan Lee Coates, all of the home; his mother, Linda M. Bowers, of Jefferson, SC; 3 brothers and sisters-in-law; Thomas Blake Coates, of Greenville, SC, Jon Mark Coates, and his wife, Carol, of Cassatt, SC, and James Michael Coates, and his wife, Tina, of McBee, SC. Surviving also are his loving aunts and uncles, Edwin McInvaille and his wife, Betty, Janet Brock and her husband, Bill, and Janice Hansen and her husband, Dean; special cousins, Billy McInvaille, Kin Catoe, Sonya Craig and Paul Clark. Mr. Coate’s brother, Edwin Keith Coates, died Saturday, October 23, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

The Coates family will receive friends, Monday, October 25, 2004 from 7 to 9 pm at Baker Funeral Home, 210 E. Hilton Street, Kershaw, S.C. 29067 (803-475-3771).

The family is at the home of Darrell’s mother, Linda, 15480 Hwy. 151, Jefferson, SC.

The funeral will be a joint service for Derrell and Keith.

David Driggers

HARTSVILLE — Graveside services for David Driggers, age 59, who died Oct. 21, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am from the Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Norton Funeral Home. Dr. Gary Colboch will officiate. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 pm at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Driggers was born in Darlington Co. a son of Zula Hilton Driggers White and the late B. Carl Driggers. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. and was a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are: his mother of Darlington; 2 Daughters & Son In Laws: Donna (Michael) Gainey, Hartsville Debra (Eddie) Sellers, Hartsville; Brother: Dr. B. Carlisle Driggers, Lexington; Sister: Linda Williams, Rock Hill; 3 Grandchildren.

Lewis Kersey

LEXINGTON — Services for Lewis Franklin Kersey formerly of Miami, Florida, 81, will be held Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with burial to follow in Woodlawn North Cemetery, Miami, Florida at a later date. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM prior to the service.

Mr. Kersey died Saturday, October 23, 2004. Born in Marlboro Co., SC, he was the husband of the late Delores Kersey and the son of the late John Henry and Maggie Dew Kersey. He attended the University of South Carolina and was a graduate of the University of Miami and a resident at Deepwood Estates. Mr. Kersey was an independent food broker in Miami, Florida for many years.

Surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Sudie and Bryan Addy of Gilbert; nephews, Melbourne Clarke, Everette Clarke, Larry Clarke, Carl Gable, Jack Gable, Skip Kersey, Rodney Kersey, Carey Kersey, Barry Kersey, Jerry Kersey, Terry Kersey, and Jason Kersey; nieces, Iris Powers, Harriet Herndon, Linda Gorham and Robin Bayerl. Mr. Kersey was preceded in death by sisters, Hattie Clarke and Charlotte Gable and brothers, Sidney Kersey, John Kersey and Charles Kersey.

Louise Marsh

ASHWOOD — Louise Holloman Marsh, 85, widow of Claude G. Marsh, died Saturday, October 23, 2004 at her home.

Born January 28, 1919, in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Grover C. Holloman and the late Effie Nesbitt Holloman.

She was a member of Ashwood Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Claude Wayne Marsh and his wife, Karen, of Florence; a daughter, Patricia M. Brunson of Ashwood; one granddaughter, Teresa D. Brunson of Sumter; two sisters, Ruth Hudson of Columbia and Blanche Kimmerlin of Ashwood; four sisters-in-law, MaeNell Barfield and Susie Marsh, both of Camden, Rosa Hopkins of the Cedar Creek community and Betty Cook of Dalzell; and a number of nieces and nephews and a special friend, Barbara Cramer.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jerry Brunson and four brothers, Willard, Harvey, Clifford and Eldridge Holloman.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M., Tuesday at the Ashwood Baptist Church with Rev. Luke Harris officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home, 11 Holman Road.

Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 927, Bishopville, SC 29010.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of the arrangements.

Clyde Ashley

COLUMBIA — Funeral Service for Clyde “Junior” Ashley of Columbia, will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Baptist Church on Chestnut Street with interment in Piney Grove Baptist Cemetery, Perry, S.C. The family will receive friends on Monday evening (tonight) from 6 until 8 p.m. at J.H. Robinson Funeral Home Wagner, S.C. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Ashley died Thursday, October 21. Born in Wagner, he was the son of Quincy Marie Williamson Ashley and the late Clyde Ashley Sr. He was an Army veteran, and he retired from AT&T Nassau Metals. He was a 1966 graduate of A.L. Corbit High School.

Clyde enjoyed fishing and was a people person. He never met a stranger and once you were aquatinted with him you were a friend for life. He enjoyed life and indeed lived it to the fullest.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Laws-Ashley; his mother of Wagner; brothers, Clayton and Cecil Ashley; sisters, Eleanor Marie Sweeney, Dr. Mary Ashley-(Vandie) Livingston, Essie and Audrey Ashley; brothers-in-law, Ronnie and Thomas (Ann) Myers; a sister-in-law, Lorriane (Melvin) Fripp; one aunt, Lula Mae Myers; his “Girls” (nieces) Tysharia and Tykura Haltiwanger.

Edgar Thompson Sr.

SPARTANBURG — Edgar E. Thompson, Sr., 86, of 423 Farnsworth Rd., passed Thursday, October 21, 2004.

Mr. Thompson was a native of Columbia, S.C., he was the son of the late William and Laura Lorick Thompson. He was the husband of Mr. Frances Stricklen Thompson; they were married fifty-five years.

Mr. Thompson was a graduate of Allen University of Columbia; he earned his law degree from the former South Carolina State College. Mr. Thompson practiced law in Spartanburg and Rock Hill for several years. He taught 5th grade at the former Highland Elementary School in Spartanburg. Thompson retired as a laboratory chemist from Firestone Steel Company. He also served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife; one son, Edgar E. Thompson, Jr. of Hyattsville, MD; three daughters, Karen Y. Thompson of Washington , D.C., Janice T. (Anthony) Browder of Laurel, MD; Dr. Teresa Jon (Larry) Jarrett of Wilmington, NC; one granddaughter, Nikki Littlejohn of Mt. Rainier, MD; two brothers, James F. (Daisy) Thompson and Richard Carroll (Doris) Thompson, both of Columbia, S.C.; one sister, Mrs. Sara T. White of Columbia; a host of nieces; nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 26, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at the John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, S.C. Rev. W.E. Smith will officiate. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Mausoleum, Spartanburg.

The J.W. Woodward Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Edwin Coates

CASSATT — Funeral services for Edwin Keith Coates, 38, will be held, Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at 3:00 pm from Baker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Born in Lancaster, SC, Mr. Coates, died, Saturday, October 23, 2004. He was the son of Linda McInvaille Bowers. Mr. Coates was employed by Haier Refrigeration.

Bowers, of Jefferson, SC, 3 brothers and sisters-in-law; Thomas Blake Coates, of Greenville, SC, Jon Mark Coates, and his wife, Carol, of Cassatt, SC, and James Michael Coates, and his wife, Tina, of McBee, SC. Jack Jackson

CAYCE — A graveside service for Ovid J.C. “Jack” Jackson, 83, of Cayce, will be held at 3 pm Tuesday, October 26, 2004, in Smoaks, SC at Little Swamp United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Monday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

Born in Clay County, TN, Mr. Jackson was the son of the late Emmet Jackson and the late Lou Jackson. He died Saturday, October 23, 2004 in Lexington Extended Care.

Mr. Jackson was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He attained the rank of Corporal and served as a Century Division Ranger with Battery-B of the 373rd Field Artillery. He fought in France and Germany where he helped liberate several Nazi death camps and served in the southernmost part of the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged on December 22, 1945. Mr. Jackson was retired from Price Brothers Appliance in Columbia and was a member of VFW Post 641.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Peck) Jackson and Earline Jackson of Gilbert; granddaughter, Johnnette Michele Branham of West Columbia; and brother, Stacy Jackson of Tennessee. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Jackson; brother, Dallas Jackson; and sister, Madge Anderson.

Memorials may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US, VFW Post 641, 534 South Beltline Blvd, Columbia, SC 29206.
