Cliff Leonard will officiate with burial in Flowers Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the residence, 2337 Robinson View Rd. Mr. Hall died Thursday, October 14, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Frank Ingram and Aeary Lee Sellers Hall. He attended member of Spring Branch Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Janie Lee Flowers Hall of Hartsville, SC; son, Frankie Glen (Tonya) Hall of Hartsville, SC; sister, Mary Lee Watson of Goode, VA; brothers, Fred Hall of McBee, SC, Carson Hall of Goode, VA; very special grandsons, Frankie "Dee" Hall and Caleb Hall. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Cheyanne Marie Hall; brother, William Hall.

Mary Lee Malphus Moore

January 17th, 1924 - October 9th, 2010

Mary Lee Moore, 86, of Ormond Beach, FL passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Hospice of Port Orange. Mary Lee was born January 17, 1924 in Hartsville a daughter of the late Charles Howard Malphus and Elsie Lee McCoy Dudley . A resident of Ormond Beach for over 65 years, Mary Lee was a lighting specialist for Olson Lighting and a member of Central Baptist Church. A loving mother and grandmother, she often opened her heart and home during the holidays to those with nowhere to go. She enjoyed cooking, growing flowers and traveling. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Alan (Doris), Michael (Linda), and Billy; daughters, Julie (Jim) Smith and Anne (Denny) Stanger; brother, Happy (Dot) Malphus; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Marion, and her sister, Louise Whisenhunt. She will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to have known her. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail Port Orange, FL 32129.

Joseph Ray Hemby, Sr.

Funeral services for Joseph Ray Hemby, Sr., 63, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, October 14, 2010 at North Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Ladell Humphries will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210. Mr. Hemby died Sunday, October 10, 2010. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Joe and Sadie Segars Hemby. He was employed 42 years with Mar-Mac Manufacturing and was the Vice-President of Manufacturing. He enjoyed golf and fishing and especially enjoyed watching his granddaughters dance and play sports. Surviving are his wife, Debby Sellers Hemby of Wateree, SC; son, Ray (Brandy) Hemby of Hartsville, SC; daughter, Heather Hemby of Hartsville, SC; brother, Dawson (Judy) Hemby of Hartsville, SC; granddaughters, Whitney Hemby, Zoey Hemby, Harley Liles; nephew, Brad Hemby; his little white dog, Chelsea.

Mary Bethune Hoffman

July 6th, 1920 - October 8th, 2010

Funeral services for Mary Bethune Hoffman, 90,of Middendorf, SC, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2010 at Middendorf Baptist Church. The Rev. Don Rhyne and the Rev. Hoffman, died Friday, October 8, 2010. Born in Kershaw, Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late John Paschal and Katie Mays Bethune. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Surviving are her sons, Carroll James (Jerry) Hoffman of Darlington, SC, Paschal Grant (Gerrie) Hoffman of Middendorf, SC; daughters, Gwen (Kerry) McManus of Middendorf, SC, Renee (Larry) McDaniel of Middendorf, SC; sister, Carolyn Leone of Anderson, SC; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 3 great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Hilda Crowley; sisters, Frances McCaskill, Jean Huey, Johnsie Watts; brother, John Paschal Bethune, Jr.; grandchildren, Carroll James “Jay” Hoffman, III, Gretta McManus, Kristopher “Kris” Bond.

Melvin Leroy "Roy" Johnson

Graveside services for Melvin Leroy “Roy” Johnson, 54, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at New Providence Baptist Cemetery. The Rev. Ladell Humphries will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Mr. Johnson died Monday, October 4, 2010. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late James Melvin and Sallie Ellis Johnson. He was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church and was retired from Wellman with 33 years of service. He loved his daughters and grandkids. He cared about people and enjoyed working with his hands. Surviving are daughters, Lisa (Kevin) Tucker and Kelli (Keith) Hodges, all of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Madison Tucker and Cade Hodges; special cousins like brothers, Ronnie Johnson, David Johnson, Michael Johnson; special friend, Marie Nettles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cookie King Johnson.

Services will also be held in Saluda, SC at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, 2010 in Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church, officiated by the Rev. David McCarthy with burial in the church cemetery. She was a member of Hartsville Advent Christian Church and the Women's Home and Foreign Missions Society. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Benjamin Thomas "Trent" Mitchell, III of Hartsville, SC; son, Benjamin Thomas "Ben" Mitchell, IV of Hartsville, SC; daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Mitchell of Hartsville, SC; father and mother, of Hartsville, SC; father and mother-in-law, Tommy and Brenda Mitchell of Saluda, SC. She was preceded in death by her brother, David William Shields.

Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Marie Griggs Quick Warren. Surviving are his sons, John Wesley “Johnny” Warren III of Elmira, NY, Coty Travis Warren of Deland, FL; sisters, Cecile Boykin of Hartsville, SC, Edna Mae Lloyd of Hartsville, SC, Doris Dixon of China Grove, NC; brothers, David Quick of Hartsville, SC, Carroll Quick of Hartsville, SC. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ed Quick and Richard Warren.

Billy Lowe

October 1st, 1931 - September 30th, 2010

Funeral services for William Lawrence “Billy” Lowe, Sr., 78, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 2010 at Swift Creek Baptist Church. The Pastor Dan Blake and Mr. Ted DeBruhl will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the MUSC Lung Transplant Center, 62 Ashley Avenue MSC 586, Charleston, SC 29425. Mr. Lowe was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church. He was the founder and operator of Lowes, Inc. He served his country in the United States Coast Guard, and was an active member of the St. David’s Darlington Masonic Lodge #72, Omar Shrine, Darlington County Red Fez & Jolly Jeepsters, and the Loyal Order of the Moose – Hartsville Lodge #1770. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed. Mr. Lowe, widower of Paula Ruth Lowe, died Thursday, September 30, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Carey Lloyd and Myrtice Odom Lowe. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Paulette Lowe (Daniel Lea "Dan") Blake of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, William Lawrence (Cindy Shoemake) Lowe, Jr. of Hartsville, SC, Robert Randolph "Randy" (Lori Sims) Lowe of Hartsville, SC; grandsons, William Lawrence "Lance" Lowe, III of Hartsville, SC, David Tyler Lowe of Hartsville, SC, William Seth Lowe of Hartsville, SC. He was preceded in death by his sister, Annette Lowe Yarborough.

Born in Rock Hill, SC, she was a daughter of the late Ellie Hugh and Carrie Taylor Tinkler. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a strong, loving, caring person who enjoyed all her grandchildren. Surviving are her son, Richard (Debby) Galloway of Hartsville, SC; daughter, Annette (Maurice) Stokes of Stockbridge, GA; sisters, Louise Rodgers of Greenville, SC, Aline Bell of Rock Hill, SC, Virginia Tinkler of Rock Hill, SC; brother, Jimmy (Betty) Tinkler of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Kyle Stokes, Carmen (Charlie) Williams, Laurie Reindl, Richie (Sherry) Galloway, Melanie (Mark) Watkins, Van Galloway; great-grandchildren, T.J. Simons, Taylor Simons, Paul Stokes, Nicholas Reindl, Daniel Williams, Matthew Galloway, Andrew Galloway, Cody Watkins, Sarah Watkins, Ben Skinner, Glenn Fulmer. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Ray Tinkler; like a granddaughter, Caroline Boles Terry.

Jack M. Boykin

Steve Winburn will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 19, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Faith Holiness Church, PO Box 744 Lydia, SC 29079. Mr. Boykin entered into rest Sunday, October 17, 2010. Born in Lee Co., SC, he was a son of the late Dexter and Verlie Hancock Boykin. He attended Faith Holiness Church. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and also served in the United States Air Force. He retired from the Darlington County School Bus Maintenance Shop and from Wellman Inc. He loved to fish and work in his garden. The family would like to thank all those who cared for Jack during his illness. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Lula Mae Winburn Boykin of Lydia, SC; children, Ray (Jeanette) Winburn of Lydia, SC, Patricia Davis of Hartsville, SC, Betty (J.T.) He was retired as a rural mail carrier after twenty-eight years and worked for fifteen years at Sonoco. He was a loving father and a special friend. Surviving are his sons, Dale (Robbie Roscoe) Gainey of Cheraw, SC, Richie (Jessica Simmons) Gainey of Hartsville, SC; sisters and brother-in-law, Betty and Ernest Williams of Charleston, SC, Gwendolyn Jackson of Columbia, SC; uncle and aunt, Kenneth (Jean) McDonald, Sr. of Hartsville, SC; aunt, Katherine Allred of Eastover, SC; special friends, Alice Andrews Gainey, Billy Parker, Betty and Joey Linton, Richard and Sue Kelley, and Marty Parnell. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Gainey.
