George C. Aycock
George Calhoun Aycock, 79, husband of Ruth Griffin Aycock, died Sunday, October 21, 2001, at Covenant Place.

Born in Ninety Six, he was the son of the late George Jones and Anna Calhoun Aycock.

He graduated from Pinewood High School, where he received the following honors: winner of Coach’s Trophy, editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and class annual, president of the senior class, captain of the football team and co-captain of the baseball team. He went on to letter in baseball at the University of South Carolina, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in business administration. He joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II and served in the Southwest Pacific. He served as a Postmaster for more than 30 years and was selected Postmaster of the Year by the National League of Postmasters, where he also served as state president.

After retiring as Manning Postmaster in 1979, he served as a judge from 1980-1987. He was a charter member of the Pinewood American Legion Post No. 117 for 54 years and served in several official capacities. In January 1995, he was inducted into the Sumter County Athletic Hall of Fame and was a member of the Carolina Gamecock Club for 55 years.

He was a lifelong member of Pinewood United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school superintendent, trustee, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher and was president of the Men’s Club. After moving to Sumter, he became a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors besides his wife, include a son, Dr. George Calhoun Aycock Jr. of Greenville, Tenn.; two daughters, Laura Aycock Morris and her husband, Steven, and Libby Aycock of Sumter; two sisters, Sara Aycock Suttler of Clovis, Calif., and Charlene Aycock Morris and her husband, Jim, of Columbia; two grandsons, Wayne Morris of Clemson and Trey Aycock of Columbia; three granddaughters, Anna Morris Jones and her husband, Walker Jones Jr., of Sumter, Stephanie Morris of Greenville and Ashley Aycock of Summerton; and a great-grandson, Walker Jones III of Sumter.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Drs. Robert Stillwell and Thomas Painter officiating. Burial followed in the Pinewood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pinewood United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Gladys V. Dantzler
Gladys Virginia Dantzler, 97, widow of Harold Leroy Dantzler, died Monday, October 22, 2001, at her home.

Born April 27, 1904, in Norfolk, Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Howell and Carrie Sears Bobbitt.

She lived in Hickory, N.C., Conestee Falls, N.C., and Moncks Corner for many years. She was a retired antique dealer and a former member of Business and Professional Women of Moncks Corner, the Berkeley County Historical Society and lifelong Presbyterian Church, PCA.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ardis, and her husband, Herman, of Manning; a sister, Dorothy Lash of Clinton, Md.; four grandchildren, Jerry and Thomas Riley of Ridgeville, Virginia Bailey of Memphis, Tenn., and Amy Ellery of Carson, Nev.; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Betty Dantzler of Athens, Ga.

She was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Dantzler Jr.; three brothers, Thomas, Robert and Willard Bobbitt; and a sister, Elizabeth Campbell.

Services were 11 a.m. Thursday at New Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles C. Tyler officiating. Burial followed in Berkeley Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Tappy L. DuBose
Tappy Lesesne DuBose, 95, widow of Marvin DuBose Sr., died Thursday, October 25, 2001, at White Oak Nursing Center in Spartanburg.

Born April 27, 1906, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Julia Anderson Lesesne. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, taught in Williamsburg County Schools and was a former employee of Winthrop College, having served 21 years in the College Book Store. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Spartanburg.

Survivors include a son, Marvin DuBose Jr. of Moore, S.C.; a sister, Sue Mincey of Columbia; and two grandsons, Brian and Glenn DuBose of Spartanburg.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday in Manning Cemetery with the Rev. Murray Gibbons officiating.

Margaret Kramer Mooneyhan
Margaret Virginia Kramer Mooneyhan, 77, widow of Henry Mooneyhan, died Saturday, October 20, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Waldorf, Md., she was the daughter of the late Betsy Kramer Mooneyhan.

Survivors include a son, John Henry Mooneyhan of Sumter; a daughter, Theresa Mooneyhan McElveen of Summerton; a brother, George Kramer of New Jersey; two sisters, Helen of Washington, D.C., and Agnes of Kansas; two grandchildren, Marlana Mooneyhan Brown and Jessica Virginia Mooneyhan of Sumter.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Kirkland officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Emma K. Abraham
Emma Smalls King Abraham, 99, widow of Willie King and Johnnie Abraham, died Sunday, October 27, 2001, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility.

Born March 1, 1902, in Georgetown County, she attended Georgetown County public schools. After moving to Clarendon County, she joined Cypress Fork AME Church, where she served until her health failed.

Survivors include a stepson, Paul Abraham of Charlotte, N.C.; her niece and caregiver, Daisy Carraway of Manning; and a number of nephews and nieces whom she reared.

Services were 2:30 p.m. Friday at Cypress Fork AME Church with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Faye B. Brown
Faye Lizzie Bryant Brown, 58, wife of Gerald V. Brown, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001, at Providence Hospital.

Born Sept. 5, 1943, in Manning, she was the daughter of Molly Dennis Bryant and the late Woodrow Bryant. Mrs. Brown was a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband and mother of Manning include a son, Gerald Victor Brown Jr. of Manning; two daughters, Mary Hodge and Cheryl Ridgeway of Manning; three brothers, Douglas Bryant and Donald Bryant of Manning and Dennis Bryant of Mayesville; two sisters, Loraine Lovelady and Elise White of Manning; and four grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Upright officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Travis M. Brown Sr.
Travis Martin Brown Sr., 87, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System.

Born in Marion, he was the son of the late George M. Brown and Lena Martin Brown. He was a graduate of Mullins High School and Wofford College, Class of 1936, where he was a varsity Letterman, President of his Senior Class, member of Blue Key National Honor Society, Scabbard and Blade National Honorary Military Society, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and various other campus offices. He founded Brown’s 5-10-25 cent stores after a year of active duty as 2nd Lt. with the U.S. Army. Recalled shortly after Pearl Harbor, he served with the famed Third Armored “Spearhead” Division through five battle campaigns in Europe. Mr. Brown was awarded the Silver Star medal, Purple Heart, distinguished Presidential Unit Citation, Belgian Fourragers and European medal with five campaign stars. He retired from the active Reserve in 1954 with the rank of Major.

Mr. Brown was a member of the local Advisory Board of the National Bank of South Carolina, beginning with its establishment, and later as Emeritus member. He served as Charter President of the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce from 1958 to 1960. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the State Chamber from 1971 to 1972. He was a charter member of the Board of Trustees of Sumter Area Technical College, and a charter member of the Sumter Area Technical College Foundation. Mr. Brown was a former Vice President and member of the Board of Governors of the Third Armored Division Association. He was a past President of the Manning High Monarch Club, a member of St. Peter’s Lodge AFM, the American Legion, VFE, DAV and a former member of the Manning’s Civitan Club and member and past President of the Manning Rotary Club. Mr. Brown was a member of Manning United Methodist Church, where he held various offices, and was a former teacher of the Men’s Bible Class. He was an avid golfer. Mr. Brown was a past Vice President of the Clarendon Country Club and past President of the Carolina Left-Handed Golfers. He was also past President of the Pee Dee Seniors Golfers Association, and the Midland Seniors Golf League.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Harley Brown of the home; a son, Travis M. Brown Jr. of Manning; two daughters, Cynthia B. Whitaker and her husband, John Paul Whitaker of Newberry and Cheri Lynn Brown of North Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren, the Rev. Frances Brown King of Greenville, Travis M. Brown III of Beaufort, Elizabeth Martin of Columbia and Laura Whitaker and Mary Frances Whitaker of Newberry; and three great-grandchildren, Susan and Frances Carolina King of Greenville and Travis M. Brown IV of Manning.

Memorial services were 3 p.m. Sunday in Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Pettit officiating.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church.

Lucille C. Gaymon
Lucille Billie Canty Gaymon, 85, widow of James L. Gaymon, died Sunday, October 28, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 17, 1915, in Pinewood, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Alma Holliday Billie. She attended Clarendon County public schools and retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. of Thomasville, N.C. She faithfully served in many capacities at the church until her health failed. She was first married to the late Matthew Canty and then to the late James L. Gaymon.

Survivors include two sons, Matthew Canty of Thomasville and Aaron Canty of New Haven, Conn.; two brothers, Gilbert Billie of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Alfonso Billie of Pinewood; a sister, Sadie Solomon of Brooklyn; a stepson, Donnelle Wilson Gaymon; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Canty; a daughter, Thelma Galloway; four brothers, Adam Billie, Jacob Billie, Marion Billie and Rhinehart Billie; and two sisters, Helen Green and Blossom Bowman.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Hope Holiness Church in Pinewood with the Revs. Andrew Wilson and Willie Green Jr. officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Sadie M. Hair
Sadie McCall Hair, 88, widow of George T. Hair, died Saturday, October 27, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Eunice Alsbrooks McCall. She was a member of Wedgefield Baptist Church and was retired from Pioneer Dress Co. after 40 years.

Survivors include three sons, George B. Hair of Sumter, Ralph Hair of Decatur, Ala., and Allen Hair of Columbia; a brother, D.J. McCall of Sumter; two sisters, Maude Galey and Elizabeth Smith of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clyde Hair; a daughter, Mary Jane Hair; a brother, Marion McCall; and four sisters, Mary McCall, Lucille Silver, Belva Truesdale and Pearl McLeod.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Drew Choate officiating.

Burial followed in Troublefield Cemetery.

Kipper Hair, Ralph Hair Jr., Lee Cummings, Jeffrey Cummings, Mike McLeod, Reggie Goodman and Bobby Batten served as pallbearers.

Dr. S. Perry Davis, Shelby Batten, Mike Earnhardt and Blake Carper served as honorary pallbearers.

Rev. Alfred W. Mallett
PHILADELPHIA - The Rev. Alfred Waymon “Alpha” Mallett, 75, husband of Christine Huff Mallett, died Saturday, October 20, 2001, at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Born April 2, 1926, in the Sugar Hill community, he was the son of the late Eugene Mallett and Dalia Burgess Mallett. He was a 1944 graduate of Manning Training School and attended Philadelphia College of Bible. In his youth, he joined Providence AME Church. After moving to Philadelphia, he joined Zion Baptist Church under the Rev. Leon Sullivan, where he was ordained as a deacon. In 1962, he joined the ministry. He pastored Christ Tabernacle Church from January 1963 until his retirement on Oct. 23, 1999.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include a daughter, Felicia Mallett of the home; a granddaughter, Latrice Mallett of the home; an adopted brother, Irvin Burgess of Los Angeles, Calif.; two nephews raised as brothers, William Mallett of Manning and Ambrose Mallett of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Edith Davis of Atlanta, Ga., and Bessie M. McGriff and Ida B. McCollough of Manning; and a sister-in-law, Inez Mallett of Manning.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albertus Mallett and Issac Eugene Mallett.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Providence AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Rufus Gaymon, Barney Dozier, Cokley Richburg and George P. Windley assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
