Josephine H. Bethune
Josephine Heyward Bethune, 83, widow of Deacon Lawson Bethune Sr., died Wednesday, August 7, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 6, 1919, in the Huger section of Berkley County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Heyward Sr. and Harriett Jones Heyward and stepdaughter of the late Lydia Heyward. She was raised by her grandmother, the late Emma Jackson Heyward. She attended Berkley County public schools and in her youth, joined New Hope AME Church. After relocating to Clarendon County, she attended Union Cypress AME Church. She later joined Holly Hill Baptist Church, where she was an active member for 54 years, serving as the treasurer for the Senior Choir and on the Usher Board and Missionary Society.

Survivors include two sons, Willie Ervin “Pee Wee” Bethune and his wife, Rose Anna, and Donald Bethune Sr. and his wife, Evangelist Mary Bethune, of Manning; an adopted son Charlie Weathers and his wife, Hattie, of Summerton; an adopted daughter, Mazie York of Manning; a brother, Nelson Richardson of Huger; two sisters, Bertha Mae Richardson of Huger and Maggie Heyward of Charleston; seven grandchildren; and 11 adopted grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lawson “Bubba” Bethune Jr.; and a brother, Clay Heyward.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holly Hill Baptist Church, Bloomville, with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Cokley Richburg, Dennis Jeffcoat, Gussie Ceasar and Jonathan Mouzon.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

O'Neal Parker
O’Neal Parker, 76, widower of Norma Mac Harrington Parker, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at his home after an illness.

Born in Williamsburg County, he was the son of the late Mills Cleveland and Lula Fry Parker. He was a retired farmer and a member of Midway Presbyterian Church. He was a mason and served in the merchant marines during World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. J.W. (Mickie) Evans of Bluffton and Mrs. Hoyt (Patsie) Shuler of Sumter; two sons, James E. “Eddie” Parker of Orangeburg and Mills Cleveland “Clevie” Parker of Greenville, Tenn.; a brother, Francis Parker of Georgetown; four sisters, Addie Bell Mixon of Charleston, Fannie Mae Bramlett of Georgetown, Rosa Cobil of Conyers, Ga., and Carolyn Cumbee of Greenwood; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday in the First Free Will Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Willie F. Adams
Willie Fitzgerald Adams, husband of Mary Louise Peoples Adams, died Saturday, August 3, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Dillon County, he was the son of the late William A. Adams and the late Mary Sue Barefoot Adams. He was retired from Turner Truck Company and was a member of the First Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Rosa Gail Adams Corbett of Sumter and Sheryl Dette Adams Coker of Summerton; and two sisters, Dorothy Atkinson of Ashwood and Betty Ross of Dalzell.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Adams.

Services were 4 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Ellison L. Evans officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Southern Methodist Church, 321 Miller Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Ralph F. Cothran Sr.
Ralph Ferrell Cothran Sr., 80, widower of Ruth DuBose Cothran, died Monday, July 29, 2002, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1921, in Manning, he was the son of the late Ralph Dillard Cothran and Mamie Ferrell Cothran. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII. He was an attorney and practiced law from 1949-1995, served as Master of Equity in Clarendon County from 1997-present and was former Probate Judge of Clarendon County from 1995-1997. Mr. Cothran was a member of Presbyterian Church of Manning.

Survivors include a son, Ralph Ferrell Cothran Jr. and wife Debbie, of Manning; a daughter, Debbie Joseph of Manning; a sister, Frances C. Brock of Summerton; three grandsons, Scott Ferrell Cothran, Michael Bailey Cothran and Marion Epps DuBose IV; and a granddaughter, Malloree Davidson Cothran.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth C. Griffin.

Services were 11 a.m. Thursday in the Presbyterian Church, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning Building Fund, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Peter Coutrier Jr.
Barnwell - Peter Coutrier Jr., 63, died Saturday, July 27, 2002 at Barnwell County Hospital.

Born Oct. 9, 1938, in Charleston, he was the son of Inez Brown Coutrier and the late Peter Coutrier Sr. He attended New York City public schools. In 1993, he retired as a master fabric cutter and relocated to Williston.

Survivors besides his mother include a son, Peter Coutrier III and his wife, Alexandria of Coram, N.Y.; two daughters, Helena Teresa Young and her husband, Charles, of East Orange, N.J. and Petrea Ellen Courtier of Williston; three brothers, Rubin Brown of New York City, Melvin Coutrier and his wife, Marion, of Charleston and Nathan Coutrier of Summerton; two sisters, Christine Washington and her husband Julius and Nancy Goodwin and her husband Leonard of Goose Creek; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew Coutrier; and two sisters, Bebe Porter and Edna Mae Coutrier-Davis.

Services were 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hayes Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, Manning, with Albert Thompson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in St. James AME Church in the Potato Creek section of Summerton.

Bill Goins Jr.
Sam William “Bill” Goins Jr., 43, husband of JoAnn McGriff Goins, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at his home.

Born Jan. 15, 1959, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Sam W. Goins Sr. and Alma Sherwin Cooper Welch. He graduated from Sumter High School and was employed by Santee Print Works. He was a member of Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364, Scottish Rite Temple, Jamil Shrine Temple, the Gamecock Shrine Club, Jamil Jets and Royal Order of Jesters. He was an active bowler in the Tuesday Night Mix and Men’s City League. He was also a member of the Five Points Hunting Club and White Tails Deer Hunting Club. He was a Baptist.

Survivors besides his wife, mother and father include a stepmother, Sheryl Goins; a stepfather, Roy Welch Jr.; three sons, Chase Goins, Patrick Goins and Eric Castro; a daughter, Leah Castro; and three brothers, Craig Goins, Woody Newman and Eddie Newman of Sumter.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Fleming officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Gene Gowder, John Davis, Keith Hodge, Ervin Boykin, Donny McLeod and Lewis Clark served as pallbearers.

Members of the Gamecock Shrine Club served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, 952 Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605.

Bryson O. Johnson
Bryson Owen Johnson, four-week-old infant son of Katie R. Johnson, died Friday, August 2, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Survivors besides his mother of Manning and her fiancé, Jonathan Simmons of Lynchburg include his maternal grandparents, Jason O. and Kathy L. Johnson of Manning; maternal great-grandmother, Jean S. Lowder of Manning; paternal great-grandmother, Lizzie Johnson of Wedgefield; an aunt, Jessica Johnson of Manning; and a cousin, Aubrey Johnson.

Services were 5 p.m. Sunday in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. John Hall and Bennie Barwick officiating.

Mason Lee, Ryan Lee, Taylor Lee and Daniel Young served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 2955 Colonial Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29203 or to the Home Branch Baptist Church Building Fund.

Bertha H. Jones
Bertha “Sue” Harrison Hickman Jones, 81, died Sunday, July 28, 2002.

Born June 11, 1921, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Henry Harrison and Mary Vertell Tomlin Harrison. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Little Mt. Zion Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1994, she returned home and joined Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended regularly until the time of her illness. She retired from Danilow Pastry Inc. of Brooklyn.

She was first married to the late James Hickman and later married to the late Isaiah Jones.

Survivors include a daughter, Celestine Myers of Alcolu; a niece raised as a daughter, Shirley Evins and her husband Deacon Hazel Evins of Alcolu; a brother, Robert Harrison and his wife Mary of Hamden, Conn.; two sisters, Mattie T. Evans and Louise Singleton and her husband Bill of Alcolu; and six grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Men of the church served as pallbearers.

Ladies of the church served as floral bearers.

Bertis Vinson Long
Sumter - Bertis Vinson Long, 83, widower of Maxine Hodge Long, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at his residence in Sumter.

Born June 29, 1919, in Harrisburg, Illinois, he was the son of the late Oscar Eugene and Marie Vinson Long. He was a WWII Army veteran, a Mason, and a member of Jordan United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Long Blackmon and husband, Jerry F. and Marilyn Long Warren and husband, Thomas Kenneth, of Sumter; a sister, Margaret Long Howard of Richmond, Ky.; three granddaughters, Kerri Blackmon, Sherri B. Dagesse and husband, Corey, and Codi Warren, of Sumter; and two grandsons, Thomas Kenneth Warren, Jr. and Michael Vinson Warren of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mittie Ruth Asherbranner and Barbara Nell Ranz; and two brothers, Oscar Eugene Long and Edward Dale Long.

Services were at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. George Gain officiating.

Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jordan United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Janie M. Felder
Janie McKnight Felder, 101, widow of William Eli “Willie” Felder, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at the Methodist Oaks.

Born Dec. 13, 1899, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late William McKnight and Susan Janie McKnight Watt. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church and a retired secretary.

Survivors include a nephew, George Culler of Orangeburg; six nieces, Myrtle Wood of Lake City, Evelyn Nelson of West Columbia, Helen Heddon of Canton, Texas, Mary McAdams of Hartville, Ohio, Susanne Ward of Inverness, Fla., and Helen Cashon of Statesboro, Ga.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Summerton UMC with the Rev. Carolyn Malphrus officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.
