John A. Moore
John Alton Moore, 62, husband of Vera Howle Moore, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 24, 1939, in Latta, he was the son of the late Quincy and Lucy Clark Moore. He was a salesman, a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a member of Latta Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three daughters, Renee Bodenheimer, Susan Moore and Brooke Matthews of Manning; a brother, Marvin Moore of Latta; two sisters, Marie Clark of Florence and Sybil Hammett of Columbia; and six grandchildren.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Stephen Bowe officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Chaney W. Richardson
Chaney Fogle Williams Richardson, 91, died Saturday, August 4, 2001, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.

Born April 10, 1910, in Orangeburg County, she was the daughter of the late Demus Fogle and Julia Johnson Fogle. She attended Orangeburg County public schools and was a lifelong member of Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

She was first married to the late Clay Williams and then to the late Henry Richardson.

Survivors include two sons, Abraham Richardson of Rosedale, N.Y., and St. Clay Williams of Santee; a stepdaughter, Mary E. Wilkins of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two granddaughters whom she raised as her own, Ethel Bennett of the home and Donna Thomas of Columbia; and a niece she raised, Lillie Mae Keller of Santee.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Daisy B. Frank.

Services were noon Wednesday at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Lucious Dixon, pastor, officiating and the Revs. Glen Keller and Thelma Dixon assisting.

Burial followed in Island Cemetery.

Leslie E. White
Leslie Earl White, 41, husband of Candace Clark White, died Thursday, August 1, 2002, in Tuomey Hospital.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late Elbert Barton White and the late Annie Lowder White. He was a paramedic with Clarendon Memorial Hospital and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Michelle Plowden of Alcolu and Sarah White of Manning; two sons, Richard Imboden of Lancaster and B. Ryan White of Manning; two brothers, Kenny H. White of Darlington and Mike White of Alcolu; and four grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. Stephen Bowe officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 129 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1794 Old Georgetown Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Willie L. Welch
Willie Layton Welch, 63, died Sunday, August 4, 2002, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 22, 1939, in Turbeville, he was the son of Susanna Floyd Welch and the late William Melton Welch. He was a retired sign painter.

Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include three sons, Willie L. Welch Jr., Sammy Welch and Jeffrey Allen Welch of Sumter; two daughters, Bessie Welch Brown of Sumter and Charlene Marie Welch Kennedy of Walterboro; a brother, Jackson Clem Welch of San Antonio, Texas; five sisters, Mamie Lee, Janie Lee Welch, Liza Ann Anderson and Barbara Ann Norton of Sumter and Virgie Lee Corbett of Camden; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Melton Welch Jr.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home, Manning with the Revs. Bobby Driggers and Roy Bowman officiating.

Burial followed in Pine Dale Cemetery, Turbeville.

David E. Strange
David Eugene Strange, 69, husband of 33 years to Evelyn Buck Strange, died August 3, 2002, in Camden, N.Y.

Mr. Strange was born in Sumter, a son of the late Dalcho Eugene and Lila Drose Strange. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Sumter and a member of the Living Hope Assembly of God in Camden, N.Y., where he served as a board member. He was a retired mechanical electrician from Sumter Machinery, worked for several years at Covenant Place in Sumter, worked as an overseer at Sumter Cemetery and worked at Enterprise Car Company of Sumter. He was the S.C. Bowling State Champion, a member of the VFW, headed up the prison ministry and was president of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship.

Survivors besides his wife of Camden, N.Y., include two daughters, Diane S. Setzer and husband Lynn of Sumter and Catherine Buck Morgan and husband Daniel of Columbia; two sons, Jonathan S. Buck and wife Tammy of Camden, N.Y., and Thomas Edward Buck of Manning; one brother, James W. Strange of Manning; one sister, Shirley S. Stanley of Fayetteville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Assembly of God on Alice Drive in Sumter with the Rev. Phil Simon officiating.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

Daniel Morgan, Lynn Setzer, Thomas Buck, Andrew Setzer, Joshua Morgan and Jayson Setzer served as pallbearers. Bob Bilheimer, Harold Nygord and John Giles served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Living Hope Assembly of God, Route 66, Camden, N.Y. 13316.

Myrtle B. Porter
Myrtle Elizabeth Braxton Porter, 70, wife of Appelt James Porter, died Saturday, August 3, 2002, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Born Dec. 10, 1931, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John and Luticher Rogers Braxton. She was retired from Campbell’s Soup in Sumter, and attended Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, John Porter of Manning; three daughters, Virginia Strickland of Summerton, Linda Wadford and Juliette Lawhon of Manning; four brothers, Edward Braxton, Bobby Braxton and Jack Braxton of Alcolu and Charles Braxton of Sumter; a sister, Annette Griffin of Sumter; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were 4 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home, Manning.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Dane Griffin, Lenny Griffin, Tony Griffin, Carl Porter, Roe Griffin and DeWitt Geddings served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the S.C. Kidney Foundation.

Willie C. Palmer
Greenville - Willie Carl “Wild Bill” Palmer, 50, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital.

Born April 10, 1952, in the North Santee section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Seward “Bo” Palmer Jr. and Eliza “Tee” Robinson Palmer Bennett. He was the stepson of the late Frazier Channie Bennett. He was educated at St. Paul Elementary School and Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton and was employed at Sanitary Plumbing Contractors.

Survivors include a son, Willie Carl Palmer Jr. of Gray Court; a daughter, Angela Palmer of Columbia; a brother, Charlie J. Palmer of Gray Court; two sisters, Janie Palmer and Roberta Burns and her husband, Robert, of Coolidge, Ga.; and a grandchild.

Services were 11 p.m. Saturday at Oaks AME Church, North Santee, with the Rev. Marco Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Eva S. McGee
Sumter - Eva Loutitia Shorter McGee, 95, widow of Horace Dupree McGee, died Thursday, August 1, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Davis Station, she was the daughter of the late Julius Allen Shorter and Margaret Elizabeth Shorter. She was a member of Harmony Church.

Survivors include two sons, Herbert D. McGee and Cody R. McGee, of Sumter; four daughters, Dorine M. Sievers, Helen M. Polito, Marguerite M. Coward and Bettie M. Willette of Sumter; a sister, Bardie Cross of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lewis N. McGee; two brothers, Cole Blease Shorter and Julius Allen Shorter Jr.; two sisters, Lorena E. Felder and Flaga A. Shorter; and a grandson, Robert Michael Willette.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Drew Choate and Billy Williams officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Les Gardner, W.T. Brogdon, Vernie Huggins, Jimmy Barfield, Mike Larkins and Paul Lowery served as pallbearers.

Mitch Towery, Tommy Rogers, George Corbett, Rubin Bryant, Sammy Geddings and William Kimbrell served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Harmony Church, P.O. Box 1878, Sumter, S.C. 29151.

Larry L. Hicks
Larry Lee Hicks, 61, husband of Susan Medwin Hicks, died Saturday, August 24, 2002, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born November 8, 1940, he was the son of Bonnie League Hicks and the late Raymond A. Hicks. He was a retired police officer from Columbus, Ohio, a US Air Force veteran, and was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton and mother of Columbus, are a son, Michael R. Hicks of Columbus; three sisters, Carol Storey of Williamsport, Ohio, Joyce Hicks and Sherri Hicks of Columbus; a brother, Jerry Hicks of Lancaster, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Samantha Hicks of Columbus.

A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at O.R. Woodyard Funeral Home, 1346 S. High Street, Columbus, Ohio.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.
