Rounette T. Hodge
Rounette Tobias Hodge, 68, wife of Henry McClary Hodge, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born October 23, 1933, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late J.P. and Annie Childers Tobias. She was a housewife and attended Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are six daughters, Judy Mae Richbourg, Cathy Darlene Infinger, and Mary Ann Kennedy of Manning, Frances McAllister and Dorothy Ivey of Sumter, and Cynthia “Cindy” Register of Darlington; one son, Ray Hodge of Manning; five sisters, Bertha R. Brichmore of Lexington, Maybelle Jackson of Sumter, Leola Chance of Moncks Corner, Ruby Larry of Ocala, Fla., and Vernita Caldwell of Bryson City, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and 6 step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Henry McClary Hodge Jr.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Revs. Emmett Ard and Charlie Salter officiating.

Burial followed in the Rehobeth Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Sarah B. Mack
Sarah Ann Brand Mack, 55, wife of Isaac Mack, died Sunday, August 18, 2002, at Trident Medical Hospital, North Charleston.

Born August 11, 1947, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Moses Brand and Victoria Butler Brand. She was a graduate of Manning Training School. In her youth, she joined Rockhill Baptist Church. She later joined the Church of Love, where she served on the usher board. She was employed with Burls in Farlawn, N.J.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include a son, Daryle Mack of Sumter; two daughters, Cheryl Mack and Yolanda Mack of Manning; a brother, Robert Brand and his wife, Lois, of Philadelphia; a sister, Burdia Jefferson and her husband, LeRon, of Patterson, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Jerome McCray officiating.

Burial followed in Society Hill AME Church cemetery.

Jerry G. Moore
Jerry Grayson Moore, 62, died Thursday, August 22, 2002, at Clarendon Residential Care in Manning.

Born September 21, 1939, in Asheville, N.C., he was a son of the late Wallace Moore and the late Marjorie Lee Harding Pomikala. He was retired from Mastercraft Mills in Spindale, N.C. He relocated to Summerton two years ago. He was of the Seventh Day Adventist faith.

Surviving are four sisters, Gail Bevell of Goat Island, Annie J. Larkin of Anaheim Hills, Calif., Joanne Fardis of Norwalk, Calif., and Ruth Jeanette Moore of Shelby, N.C.; and nephew, Ronald P. Bevell II of Goat Island.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Paul Pomikala.

Services were held on Sunday, August 25, 2002, at Union Mills Baptist Church Cemetery, Union Mills, N.C.

Memorials may be made to the Summerton Police Department, P.O. Box 279, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Thomasena R. Murray
Pinewood - Thomasena Ragin Murray, 38, wife of Samuel L. “Sam” Murray, died Saturday, August 17, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born December 5, 1963, in Summerton, she was the daughter of General Ragin Sr. and the late Mittie Bethune Ragin. She was a 1983 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and continued her education at Sumter Beauty College and Medix College of Atlanta, where she graduated and became a medical nurse assistant. She was employed by Clarendon County Disabilities and Special Needs Board and Walters Residential Care of Sumter until her health failed. She was a member of St. Phillip RMUE Church and sang in the adult choir for 18 years.

Survivors besides her husband of the home and father of Summerton include two sons, Shavon Ragin and Curtis Brown of the home; a daughter, Whitley Brown of the home; five brothers, General Ragin Jr. of Summerton, Hercules Ragin and his wife, Carolyn, of Garden City, N.Y., Arthur Lee Ragin and his wife, Gwendolyn, and Timothy Ragin, of Pinewood, and Ricky Ragin of Orangeburg; and six sisters, Shebia Hatcher and Linda Ragin of Pinewood, Bablee Briggs, Joyce Ragin and Janette Chandler and her husband, Edward, of Summerton, and Carolyn Dow and her husband, John, of Panola.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ozzie Ragin; and a sister, Ethel Lee Halls.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. Warren E. Hatcher, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Amos Hatcher, James Robinson, Jacob Clark and Malachi Duncan.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Jiviben B. Patel
Jiviben Bapudas Patel, wife of the late Bapudas Patel, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at McNair Nursing Home in Lake City, S.C.

Mrs. Patel was born in Gujarat, India, a daughter of the late Joitandas and Anmbaben Patel. She was of the Hindu religion and believes in the Hare Krishna movement.

Survivors include: Sendhabhai B. Patel and wife, Savita of Manning; one daughter, Arunaben Patel and husband, Ramesh of Adelphi, Maryland; 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 11 nephews and 10 nieces.

Services were held at 4:30 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2002 in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home.

Annie Q. Rose
Lynchburg - Annie “Sugar” Quattlebaum Rose, 91, widow of Robert Rose Sr., died Monday August 19, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born September 5, 1910, in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Frank Quattlebaum Sr. and Maggie Doby Quattlebaum. She attended Union Hill School in Clarendon County and in her youth, she joined Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, where she served as church mother, in senior choir, on the missionary society and as a member of Jordan Chapel Order of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 237.

Survivors include a son, Robert Rose Jr. and his wife, Dorothy, of Lynchburg; three daughters, Maggie Rush and Bertha McKenzie and her husband, Ammon, of Lynchburg, and Mary Walker and her husband, James, of Sumter; a foster son, Herbert Quattlebaum and his wife, Mary, of Lynchburg; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Turbeville, with the Rev. Shelley Hickson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Carnell Hampton.

Burial followed in St. John United Methodist Church Cemetery, St. John.

Susan. C. Stephens
Susan Canty Stephens, 83, widow of Richard “Bo” Stephens, died Monday, August 19, 2002, at her home.

Born March 20, 1919, in Rimini, she was the daughter of the late Mayers Aaron Canty and Lucinda Lawson Canty. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined St. Phillip RMUE Church, where she remained a faithful member.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Mae Hatcher of Hartford, Conn., Geraldine Perkins of Yonkers, N.Y., and Thelma Stephens of Baltimore; an adopted son, Willie Canty of Irvington, N.J.; four brothers, Boston Canty of Kinston, N.C., Aaron Canty of Wilmington, N.C., Hazel Junious of Summerton and James Lawson of Columbia; a sister, Julia Phillips of Summerton; 15 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and a number of aunts, nieces and nephwes.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Harriet Brown.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church in Summerton with the Rev. Warren E. Hatcher, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Earl Wells
Earl Wells, 78, husband of Louise Smith Wells, died Friday, August 23, 2002 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 25, 1924, in Lexington, Ky., he was the son of the late Osa and Elizabeth Wells. He was a retired plumber for Walt Disney, and a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are a son, Earl Raymond Wells Jr., of Florida; a brother, Glenn Wells of Tenn.; and a granddaughter, Ziena Loftus and husband, Jim, of Alcolu.

Private funeral services will be held at a later date.

George L. Williams
New York, N.Y. - George Lee Williams, 50, died Friday, August 16, 2002, at his home in New York.

Born October 8, 1951, in Summerton, he was a son of the late George and Sarah “Gallie” Green Williams. He was a foster son of Ella C. Carter. He attended Clarendon County District 1 public schools.

After reaching adulthood, he moved to Thomasville, N.C., and then later to Manhattan, N.Y., where he lived and worked for the past 35 years. He was employed as a crew leader at McDonald’s.

Survivors include three brothers, Bornell Williams of Richmond, Va., C.L. Williams and his wife, Katie, of Sumter and James Williams and his wife, Priscilla, of Thomasville; a sister, Tiny Lincoln of Pinewood; six stepsisters, Rosalee C. Richburg of Manhattan, Frances C. Fludd of Summerton, Susan Holiday of Newark, N.J., Ella Mae Harrison of Bronx, N.Y., Kay Bertha Webber and her husband, William, of Thomasville and Hattie Fordham of Bronx; six stepbrothers, Robert Lee Willaims and his wife, Ruth, of Pinewood, Earl Carter and Eddie Carter of Pompano Beach, Fla., James Carter and his wife, Shelia, of Manning, Charlie Carter of Bronx, and Michael Carter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and his godparents, Ellen and James Bowman of Pinewood.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elder “L.D.” and Elijah “Mickey.”

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Phillip UME Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. James C. Williams, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Malachi L. Duncan and Dr. Henry Cohen.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Wiley James
Wiley “Blease” James, 88, widower of Ruth Fairey James, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 14, 1913, in the Rimini community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Samuel Allen James Sr. and Channie Elizabeth Quarles James. He attended Sumter County public schools and in his youth, became a member of Antioch AME Church in Pinewood, where he was a former member of the steward and usher boards and served as “Father of the Antioch AME Church.” He was a master mason of the Free and Accepted Masons Silver Lodge No. 35. He was a member of the St. Paul Hunting Club, where he served as treasurer, a lifelong member of the NAACP, an avid deer hunter and a farmer for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a nephew, Washington Carver James of the home; 10 nieces and nephews; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel A. James Jr.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Antioch AME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Larry Weston, Stanley E. Hayes, L.E. Simmons and Bishop Q.B. Conyers assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
