Johnnie Waiters
Johnnie Waiters, 83, husband of Elouise Frazier Waiters, died Monday, August 20, 2001, in Greeleyville.

Born Oct. 18, 1917, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Ben Waiters and Sarah Brunson Waiters.

He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he attended Society Hill AME Church. He was a retired farmer and employee of Randolph’s Landing.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Hasker Waiters of the home, Robert Waiters of Manning, Adger Waiters of Greeleyville and Johnny Waiters Jr.; a daughter, Essie Porter of Buffalo, N.Y.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo Waiters and Joe Waiters; and three sisters, Lizzie M. Mack, Mary Lee Mack and Essie Mack.

Services were 4 p.m. Friday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Leon Terry officiating.

Burial followed in Society Hill AME Church cemetery.

Pearl M. Blackwell
Pearl McDowell Blackwell, 73, wife of George Blackwell Sr., died Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 30, 1929, in the Olanta section of Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Henry McDowell and Ada Mae McFadden McDowell. She attended Clarendon County public schools and Pleasant Grove School. She was a member of Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church for 54 years, where she served on the gospel choir, mass choir, and Willing Workers Club. She was employed with Georgia-Pacific and Turbeville Apparel before retiring. She was a member of the YMCA/YWCA No. 15 organization.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include four sons, George Blackwell Jr. and his wife, Janet, of Columbia, Deacon Henry O. Blackwell and his wife, Cassie, Timothy Blackwell and his wife, Betty, and Jerome Blackwell of Alcolu; four daughters, Claudia Lee and Pearlean Franklin of Alcolu, Carolene David and her husband, Frank, of Gable, and Patricia A. Blackwell of Fayetteville, N.C.; a granddaughter she raised as her own, Claudette Blackwell of Columbia; a brother, William McDowell and his wife, Barbara, of Oxford, N.C.; two sisters, Itlean McElveen and Beatrice Rush and her husband, Ingram, of Olanta; two aunts, Mary McFadden of Norwalk, Conn., and Carrie Thomas of Lynchburg; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Blackwell; and a brother, Willie James McDowell.

Services were held at noon Saturday at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis C. Brock, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jonathan Anderson and Evangelist Bryant.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Thomas P. Corbett
Thomas Pinckney Corbett, 83, widower of Mary Ruth Pridmore Corbett, died Monday, October 14, 2002, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born March 6, 1919, in Paxville, he was the son of the late Claude William Corbett and the late Edna Eugene Ardis Corbett. He was a retired construction worker, and a member of Paxville Baptist Church.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Paxville Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Mosier officiating.

Burial followed in Paxville Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Paxville Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 5005, Paxville, S.C. 29102.

Jeremiah David Jr.
Jeremiah David Jr., 56, husband of Hattie L. David, died Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 10, 1946, in Summerton, he was the son of Jeremiah David Sr. and the late Hessie Lawson David. He was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. He was a self-employed professional truck driver.

Survivors besides his wife of the home and father of Summerton include four daughters, Christina Lemon and her husband, General, of Manning, Athenia Bosier and her husband, Allen, and Angela David and her husband, Hamilton, of Summerton, and Tabitha Mouzon of Japan; two brothers, Solomon David and George David and wife, Naomi, of Miami, Fla.; two god daughters, Lana Lewis of Summerton and Johnta Holiday of Fort Campbell, Ky.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward David.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert James.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Carroll J. Dennis
Carroll Jackson “Jack” Dennis, 63, died at his home in Manning.

Born Feb. 14, 1939, in Lake City, he was the son of the late Waynie Dennis and Margaret Rebecca Ridgeway Mason. He was a retired truck driver and a Mason.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Diane Beasley of Manning; a son, Ronald Paul Dennis of Sumter; a brother, Henry Cecil Dennis of Mountain View, Ark.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Sam Neal officiating.

Memorials may be made to First Assembly of God, 3574 Hwy. 260, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Lillie Mae C. Haigler
Neeses - Lillie Mae Carter Haigler, 78, died Saturday, October 12, 2002, at The Regional Medical Center.

Born in Denmark, she was the daughter of the late Charles L.A. “Jack” Carter and Blanche Collins Carter. She was retired from Standard Federal Savings and Loan as Vice President and Manager of the Orangeburg Mall branch. Mrs. Haigler was earlier associated with First Federal of Orangeburg. She was a graduate of the National Savings and Loan Institute. She was associated with the Bank of Clarendon in Manning. She was the Financial Director of the Orangeburg Council on Aging, former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and a Past President of the Pilot Club. She was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and was the first “Miss Orangeburg” in 1940.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas I. Haigler Sr., of the home; two sons, Adrain Earl Haigler Sr., and wife, Sandra, of Orangeburg and Thomas I. Haigler Jr. and wife, Debra, of Neeses; two grandchildren, Andy Haigler and wife, Melody, of Florence and Ty Haigler and wife, Karry, of Orangeburg; and two great-grandchildren, Megan and Taylor Ann of Florence.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at Lebanon United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Mcgee officiating.

Burial was followed at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Harry Sprouse, Bill Hildebrand, Adrain E. “Andy” Haigler Jr., Thomas I. “Ty” Haigler, III, Bryan Fogle and Dwayne Fogle.

Memorials may be made to Lebanon United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Curtis L. Haynie
Curtis Lee Haynie, 53, of 614 Sykes St., husband of Cynthia Dannette Ragin-Haynie, died Tuesday, October 8, 2002, at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Born Feb. 12, 1949, in Carrollton, Ala., he was the son of Annie E. Haynie McLaughlin and Sammie Lee Jones and stepson of Elizabeth Jones. He attended Pickens County Training School in Carrollton, Ala. He was employed for a number of years by Hamilton Standard and Nackie Motors. He later moved to Manning in 1996, where he became a businessman; he started C/C auto and was co-owner of Unlimited Travel Agency.

Survivors besides his parents and stepmother, of Carrollton, Ala., and his wife of the home include four daughters, Wilemina Pierce of Atlanta, Melisa Ellis and her husband, Alphanso, Latrina and Shanna Haynie of Springfield, Mass.; seven brothers, Sammy Earl Jones and his wife, Gloria, James Jones and his wife, Ida, William Jones and his wife, Mary Jo, Jimmy T. Jones and his wife, Beverly, and Leroy Jones, of Carrollton, Ala., Jerry Jones and his wife, Leatha, and Prentice Jones and his wife, Nancy, of Boston; six sisters, Sarah Jones, Theresa Jones, Glenda Barnes and her husband, Early, and Betty Lanier and her husband, Phil, of Carrollton, Sandra Little and her husband, David of Reform, Ala., and Pamela Jones of Tuscaloosa; a sister-in-law, Linda Whigans of Manning; a brother-in-law, Harry Ragin of Manning; a mother-in-law, Roberta Ragin of Manning; and nine grandchildren.

Services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Lewis B. Small officiating.

Kevin R. Ragin
Anderson - Kevin Renard Ragin, 32, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born July 25, 1970, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Francina Ragin. He was a 1988 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and attended Liberty Hill AME Church.

Survivors include a son, Kevin Renard Ragin Jr. of Manning; two daughters, Kalandra Kennedy and Keonta Conyers of Manning; and five sisters, Mazie Garrison and Manzie Carter of Anderson, Willette Ragin of Greenville, and Diane Carter and Darlene Stukes of Summerton.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Vermelle Connor; and a brother, Murdock Ragin.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Malachi Duncan, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Reda L. Sorrell
Lebanon Junction, Ky. - Reda Ledale Sorrell, 70, widow of Billy Sorrell, died Sunday, October 13, 2002, at Norton-Audubon Hospital, Louisville, Ky.

A native of Smithsboro, Ky., she was the former Reda Ledale McIntosh. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Sorrell of Winter Park, Fla., and Mike Sorrell of Manning; two sisters, Gertrude Mullins of Amburgey, Ky. and Elaine Miller of Cloverport, Ky.; one brother, Ealy McIntosh of New Labanon, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Lois Hudson; and brother, Forrester McIntosh.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Lebanon Junction City Cemetery, Lebanon Junction, Ky.

Louise F. Ward
Scranton - Mrs. Louise F. Ward, 73, died on September 26, 2002 at a Florence Hospital after an illness.

Born in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Evans Webster Jones and Susie F. McLaughlin. She was a retired Certified Nursing Assistant and was a member of Scranton Baptist Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star where she served as Grand matron twice.

Survivors besides her husband, Ernest Eugene Ward of the home, include three daughters, Jean Thompson of Hemingway and Sandra Barfield and Ellen Tomlinson of Lake City; two sons, Wayne Ward of Alcolu and Paul Ward of Scranton; one sister, Lenora Jannell of Alexandria, Va.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harley Jones, Andrew Jones and E.W. Jones.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept 28, at Scranton Baptist Church.

Burial followed at Lake City Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
