Ethel Clark Freeman
Ethel Clark Freeman, 89, widow of Willie Freeman, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 24, 1912, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Moultrie and Carrie Clark.

She was a member of Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini and was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County.
Survivors include a son, Eugene Freeman and his wife Carrie of Rimini; three daughters, Irene Nelson and her husband John of New York, Sallie Storey and her husband Leavon of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mary Simpson; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by two children, Stodell Freeman and Carrie M. Parker.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini. Pastor William Polite along with the Revs. Leroy Green, Amos Hatcher and Leroy Williams officiated.

Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Mary G. Altman Morris
Mary Gandy Altman Morris, 80, wife of the late Leo Morris, died Friday, March 29, 2002, in a Florence Hospital after an illness.

Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rachel McGee Gandy. She was a homemaker and a member of Olive Grove Free Will Baptist Church.

She was first married to the late Troy Lee Altman.

Survivors include four sons, John Altman of Timmonsville, Wes Altman of Raleigh, N.C., Laverne Altman of Wadesboro, N.C., and J.W. Altman of Lynchburg; five daughters, Mary Turner of Laurens, Dean Winters of Columbus, Ohio, Carolyn Cochran of Rock Hill, Ada Beard of Cades and Marilyn Galloway of Sumter; two sisters, Janie McCutcheon of Norfolk, Va., and Thelma McDaniel of Coward; one brother, Raymond Gandy of Coward; 26 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Burial followed in Lake City Memorial Park.

Ruthanne Sikora
Ruthanne Sikora, 86, widow of Edward Albert Sikora, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at her home in Summerton.

Born May 8, 1915, in Orange, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Harry Brabson Tunstead and Violet Hoyt Tunstead Fredericks. She was a former nurse, housewife and an Episcopalian. She was a member of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Easter Star of New Jersey and New York.

Survivors include a son, Albert Edward Sikora of Norfolk, Va.; two sisters, Doris Roll of Summerton and Violet Hoyt Tunstead Beebee of Glenside, Pa.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Eastern Star Home, 1267 North Main Street, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Nancy Singleton
Nancy Singleton, 90, widow of Morris Singleton, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County on Aug. 6, 1911, she was the oldest daughter of the late Richard Richburg and Martha Jane Blanding Richburg. She was a lifetime resident of Sumter and Clarendon counties. Affectionately known as “Mrs. Nancy,” she graduated from the Kendall Presbyterian High School Academy, where she starred on the basketball team. Later, she completed her cosmetology studies at the Gardner Beauty School.

She was a faithful member of the Bethel AME Church where she served actively in many capacities, as a trustee on the board, president of the Missionary Society, member of the choir and “mother of the church.” In 1965, she was crowned “queen of the church.” She was a successful entrepreneur who owned the Nancy Beauty Salon in downtown Sumter on East Liberty Street. She was the sole proprietor of her Sumter business from 1945 to 1970. In 1970, she moved to Englewood, N.J., and was employed at the Bergan-Pine Hospital until her retirement in 1983. She then relocated to Sumter, where she built her dream home, was passionate about raising chickens and pigs, gardening, flowers, sewing, quilting and artistic floral design.

In the spring of 1928, she was married to the late Morris Singleton and they had five children.

Survivors include three daughters, Jeanette Daniels and Lily Bailey of Sumter and Ramona Basco of Englewood, N.J.; two sons, Morris Singleton Jr. of Sumter and Richard Singleton of Marianna, Fla.; a sister, Mary Davis of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Julius and Blanding Richburg Jr.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday at Bethel AME Church. The Rev. Robert E. Galloway officiated.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Michael Brodie, Maurice Basco, Richard Singleton, Douglas Bailer and Derrick Daniels. Flower bearers were Courtney Bailey, Sabrina Basco, Rosalind Byrd, Gloria Basco and Pamela Brodie.

Memorials may be made to Bethel AME Church Building Fund, 218 East Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Lannis P. Jordan
Conway, S.C. - Lannis Powell Jordan, 55, wife of Richard L. Jordan, died Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at home.

Born Sept. 6, 1947, in Conway, she was the daughter of Virginia Floyd Powell and the late Lonzie S. Powell.

She was a 1965 graduate of Conway High School, and received her Bachelors Degree from the University of South Carolina in 1969. She was a lifetime member of the first United Methodist Church in Conway, and was a member of the Stilley-Walsh Circle.

Survivors besides her mother of Conway include her husband, Richard L. Jordan of Conway; two daughters, Natalie J. Cooper and her husband, Billy, of Conway and Jenny R. Jordan of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother, Bruce L. Powell and his wife, Jane, of Manning; and a grandson, Furman Cooper.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Conway, with the Revs. John Hipp and Carl Harris officiating.

Burial followed in Lakeside Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1001-5th Ave., Conway, S.C. 29526.

Moses Servance
Moses Servance, 82, husband of Mable Wright Servance, died Friday, November 29, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Oct. 2, 1920, in Manning, he was the son of the late Rev. Vincent Servance and Miley Sharpe Servance. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church. He sang with the Gospel Four Quartet for a number of years. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with the S.C. Department of Public Transportation for 16 years.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three sons, Edward Servance of Manning, and Roland Servance and Raymond Servance of Atlanta; a daughter, Roxanne Servance of Baltimore; a brother, David Servance and his wife, Linda, of Philadelphia; two sisters, Rosa Lee Morris of Manning and Easter Mae Plowden of Sumter; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, four brothers and three sisters.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church with Elder Shelly Hickson, and the Revs. Cokley Richburg, Henry Presley, Sylvester Hicks and Terry Johnson officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Monroe Watts
Monroe Watts, 77, widower of Catherine Burt Watts, died Sunday, December 1, 2002, at 1040 Lumley Ave., Sugar Hill community of Manning.

Born Feb. 15, 1925, in Prattville, Ala.., he was the son of the late Moses Watts and Rosa Crenshaw Watts. He attended Prattville, Ala., public schools. In his youth, he attended First Baptist Church in Prattville. He later attended Thessalonians Baptist Church in Bronx, N.Y. He was employed with the New York Housing Authority as a plumber for a number of years.

Survivors include three sons, Anthony Watts of Bronx, N.Y., Leon Avinger and Nathanie Avinger of New York City; a daughter, Elizabeth Cobb and her husband, Robert, of New York City; two sisters, Willie Bell Robinson and her husband, Archie, of Bronx, N.Y. and Lillie Gordon of Prattville, Ala.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Theo Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by evangelist Vermell Mouzon and evangelist Tameka Mouzon.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Billy J. Craft Sr.
Billy Joe Craft Sr, 76, husband of Jewel Smoak Craft, died Sunday, November 3, 2002, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born May 5, 1926, in Qulin, Mo., he was the son of the late William and Mae Becker Craft. He was retired from the Department of Natural Resources, a U.S. Navy and Coast Guard Veteran, and recipient of the Purple Heart, having been wounded in the Invasion of Normandy. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors besides his wife of 56 years, include a son, Billy Joe Craft Jr. of Manning; two daughters, Adona Craft Joseph of Manning and Ramona C. Johnson of Georgetown; six grandchildren, Duke Craft, Dawn Craft Barrett, Michelle Carr, Stephanie Johnson, Micah Joseph and Collin Joseph; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning with the Rev. Dr. Paul Sullivan officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bill Selman.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, S.C. 29648-1178.

Susan W. Bradshaw
Susan Mae “Susie” Witherspoon Bradshaw, 79, wife of Lewington Bradshaw, died Tuesday, December 18, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born May 4, 1922, in the Wilson community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Chappell Witherspoon Sr. and Rovenia Charles Witherspoon. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of St. James Baptist Church, where she served as president of the usher board and was a member of the Missionary Society. She retired from C.E. Murray High School as a cafeteria manager after 27 years of employment.

Survivors besides her husband include a son, Phil S. Bradshaw of Greeleyville; a daughter, Anna B. “Carnie” King of Manning; two brothers, Moultrie Witherspoon and Ivory Witherspoon of Manning; a sister, Rovenia W. Bennett of Manning; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lewington Ulyscee Bradshaw; a daughter, Dorothy Kay Reid; and two brothers, Joseph Witherspoon and Chappell Witherspoon.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at St. James Baptist Church in Greeleyville with the Rev. Albert Rose, pastor, officiating and the Revs. Johnny Williams, Carl Shaw, Charles Smith and Evangelist Lula Mack assisting. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
