Mazine M. Follin
Sumter - Mazine Miles Follin, 52, wife of Glenn M. Follin, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at her home.

Born in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late Ralston Miles and the late Eula Mae Springs Miles. She attended Bondovlove Baptist Church and was employed by Becton-Dickinson for 17 years before becoming a home maker.

Survivors include her husband of Sumter; three daughters, Lynn Matula and her husband, Carl, of Sumter, Susan Simpson and her husband, Steve, of Augusta, Ga., and Glenda Follin of the home; a son, Eddie Brown and his wife, Windy, of Sumter; a brother, Roy Miles and his wife, Patricia, of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and two nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.

Burial followed in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Sammy Burrows, Rod Follin, Tim Follin, Chris Matula, Steve Miles and Todd Miles.

Memorials may be made to Hope Lodge, in care of the American Cancer Society, 269 Calhoun St., Charleston, S.C. 29401.

Beulah S. Epps
Durham, N.C. - Beulah Samuel Harvin Epps, 93, of 1004 Carpenter Fletcher Road, Durham, died January 30, 2003, at Durham Regional Hospital.

Born June 21, 1909, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Richard Samuel and Elizabeth Bradley Samuel. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and became a member of St. Mark AME Church, Alcolu. She served faithfully as a member of the senior choir, stewardess board and missionary society. After relocating to Durham, she attended Emmanuel AME Church until her health failed.

Survivors include two sons, Haskel (Betty) Epps and Harry Harvin of Durham; a sister, Asille Marshall of Winston-Salem; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Leroy Harvin and Moses Harvin Jr.; and a daughter, Lula Calhoun.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark Church, Alderman Camp Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. Cokley Richburg officiating, assisted by evangelist Dorothy Miller and the Revs. Clarence Hilton and Northern Miller.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Richard A. Dykes
Santee - Richard Alan Dykes, 44, died Monday, February 3, 2003, in Morehead Hospital in Eden, N.C.

Born Jan. 25, 1959, in Tyler, Texas, he was the son of Dolores Cardenas Dykes and the late Carl Richard Dykes. He attended East Texas State, Central Carolina and Western Carolina. He was Golf Director at Meadow Greens Country Club in Eden, N.C., and was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include his mother of Santee; a son, Robert Cameron Dykes of Cameron; a brother, Kenny Dukes of Santee; and a nephew.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, in Elloree United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Anderson officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Outreach Ministry, Hope Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 67, Vance, S.C. 29163.

M. Virginia Bruner
Mary Virginia Beatty Bruner, 66, wife of James Edward Bruner Sr., died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Regency Hospital in Florence.

Born Sept. 26, 1936, in Orangeburg, she was the daughter of the late Guy P. and Virginia King Beatty Sr. She was retired secretary and bookkeeper from Bruner’s of Orangeburg. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, a graduate and valedictorian of Cross High School, attended Columbia College, was former assistant vice president and personnel director of First National Bank in Orangeburg, former executive secretary of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association, former member of the SC Banker’s Association, former member of the Pilot Club of Orangeburg, and former member of the Cosmopolitan Club of Sumter.

Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include a son, Jay Bruner and wife, Angie, of Summerton; a granddaughter, Abbie Bruner of Summerton; two half-sisters, Jacqueline Shipley of Ellicott City, Md., and Julia Lee Watkins of Eutawville.

She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Guy P. Beatty Jr.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in Summerton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Armond Shealy and Mark Altman officiating.

Burial followed in St. Paul Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Will Watkins, Kenny Bilton, Johnny Bruner, Robert C. Bruner Jr., Clay Bruner and Greg Bruner.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605 or to Clarendon Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.

James C. Gerhold Sr.
James Charles Gerhold Sr., 68, husband of Eleanor Langston Gerhold, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Franklin and Dorthea. He retired as a machinist from the Continental Can Co. in Baltimore. He was a member of the Second and Fourth Baptist Church in Baltimore.

Survivors besides his wife of 31 years include two sons, James C. Gerhold Jr. of Denver and Thomas R. Gerhold of Salisbury, Md.; two daughters, Bonnie Lynn Gorsuch of Baltimore and Joyce Denise Parker of Salisbury, Md.; two stepsons, C. Earl Green of New Zion and H. Vere Green of Turbeville; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge, Md.

Burial followed in Meadow Ridge Cemetery.

Jewell W. Johnson
Jewell Mae Welch Johnson, 58, widow of Jeff Arthur Johnson, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at her home in Greeleyville.

Born May 31, 1943, in Barrineau, she was the daughter of Edna Anderson Welch and the late Samuel Welch. She attended Leo Church of God.

Survivors include her mother of Sardinia; two daughters, Rita Goins and her husband Pete of Greeleyville and Barbara Fields and her husband Anthony of Alabama; five brothers, Ernest Welch, Bob Welch and Ed Welch of Sardinia, Kenny Welch of Turbeville and Delbert Welch of Olanta; a sister, Linnie B. Chockley of Lake City; three grandchildren, Desmond Johnson and Jacob and Taylor Fields; and one great-grandchild, Stacey Johnson.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam Welch and Peanut Welch.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home. The Rev. Wayne Windham officiated.

Burial followed in Olive Grove Cemetery in Turbeville.

Henry Burroughs
Henry Burroughs, 77, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Mariner Health West after an extended illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Joseph and Susie Mae Stukes Burroughs. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon and Sumter counties and served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army. Most of his adult life was lived away from Sumter. Upon returning to Sumter, he became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include five children, Karen Vonceil Burroughs Payne and her husband Clem and Rodney Bernard Burroughs and his wife Taza of Jacksonville, Fla., Linda Rose Pitts and her husband Michael of Fairfield, Calif., Michael Henry Burroughs and his wife Denise of Oakland, Calif., and Kevin Burroughs and his wife Felecia of Rochester, N.Y.; four sisters, Pearl Clark and her husband Clifton, Pauline D. Montgomery and her husband David and Anna L. Shirley and her husband Hilton of Sumter and Gladys Brown and her husband Elvin of Barnegat, N.J.; three brothers, Joe Lee Burroughs and his wife Mildred of Bronx, N.Y., the Rev. E.B. Burroughs and his wife Doris of Florence and Herbert Burroughs and his wife Elvira of Jamesville, N.C.; two aunts, Camilla Ragin and her husband James of Umatilla, Fla., and Carrie Allen of Jacksonville; an uncle, Jamison Andrews Jr. of Sumter; a devoted friend, Willie Mae Clyburn of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gayle Burroughs Sanders.

Services were noon Monday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. Drs. Marion H. Newton and E.B. Burroughs officiated.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Palmetto Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1874, Darlington, S.C. 29540-1874.

Boosie Canty
GREELEYVILLE - Boosie Canty, 75, widower of Turner Lee Bradshaw Canty, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veteran Medical Center in Columbia.

Born on Oct. 14, 1926, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Neice Canty and Queen Bennett Canty.

He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Pine Grove AME Church, where he served on the Trustee Board and Cemetery Committee. He was a member of Pride of Foreston Masonic Lodge No. 296. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged. He retired from Georgia-Pacific Corp. of Russellville.

Survivors include three sons, Ulysees Bradshaw of Titusville, Fla., Matthew Canty and Burnett Canty of the home; four daughters, Mary (Joe) Brock, Allistin (Donald) Buchanon of New York, Rosa Canty of the home and Linda Pressley of Greeleyville; a foster brother, Clayton (Sandra) Reid of Greeleyville; a foster sister, Juanita Brown of Philadelphia; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sons, Mel Jay, Seabrook and Herbert Canty.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Grove AME Church in Greeleyville. The Rev. Mary Hamilton officiated, assisted by the Revs. Betty Hamilton and Rufus Gaymon.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were members of Pride of Foreston Masonic Lodge No. 296.

Louise McBride McKenize
Louise McBride McKenzie, 79, wife of Johnny McKenzie, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 6, 1922, in the St. Paul section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Albertus and Carrie Montgomery McBride. She was reared by Murray and Louise Sanders.

She received her formal education in the public schools in Summerton. At an early age, she joined Taw Caw Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her health failed.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Kenneth McKenzie and his wife Annie and Johnny McKenzie and his wife Kathy of Miami; a daughter, Mary McKenzie Ragin of Summerton; a brother, John Sanders of Miami; a sister, Carolyn Ferguson of Miami; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, George McBride.

Services were 1 p.m. Monday at Taw Caw Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were her sons and grandsons. Floral bearers were the ladies of Taw Caw Baptist Church.
