Robert L. Nelson Sr.
Robert Lee Nelson Sr., 77, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 6, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Joseph Nelson and Annie Bell Brailsford Nelson.

He was educated in the Clarendon County public school system and was a longtime member of Antioch UME Church in Rimini.

Survivors include three sons, Willie Lee Nelson of Newark, N.J., Robert Lee Nelson Jr. and his wife Nancy of Thomasville, N.C., and Leroy Wilder of Paxville; a daughter, Gertrude Nelson of Newark; a brother, Willis Nelson and his wife Grace of Hartsville; three sisters, Albertha Boykin and her husband Richard and Victoria Nelson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Sallie Branch and her husband Conrad of Philadelphia; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at Antioch UME Church in Rimini. The Rev. Joe Nathan Smith officiated, assisted by the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were friends of the family. Floral bearers were Missionaries from Antioch UME Church.

Gerald V. Phillips
FLORENCE - Gerald Vance Phillips, 75, of Florence, widower of Sylvia Keels Phillips, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at his home after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Melvin E. Phillips and Meddie D. Phillips. He attended the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church for 56 years, where he served as a steward, church superintendent, usher and was a member of the Methodist Men. He was a Navy veteran and was retired president and CEO of the G.V. Phillips Co., Phillips Realty Inc. and Corporate Builders Inc. He was a Mason and a member of Amity Lodge No. 340.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary P. and Tom Liles III of Florence; three grandchildren, Heather Keels McAuley and her husband Jason Lee McAuley of Bloomington, Ind., Melissa Kay Liles of New York and Patricia Mary Liles of Evansville, Ind.; and two sisters, Reba P. Britton of Columbia and Marianne P. Tomin of Des Plaines, Ill.

Graveside services were 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence.

The Rev. Reginald C. Thames Jr.
The Rev. Reginald C. Thames Jr. died Thursday, April 18, 2002

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Reginald C. and Mary Lou Brunson Thames Sr.

He served churches in Sumter, Hampton and Florence counties for 33 years. He helped organize several churches in the U.S. and India and dedicated Little Lamb Church in Hyderabad, India, January 1990. He led three tours to Israel and also traveled to Europe, Greece, Jordan and Haiti.

He was educated in the Summerton public schools, Wofford College and received inservice training at the Candler School of Theology, Southern Methodist College. He was active in missionary work, preaching and teaching in India and Haiti. He was a volunteer chaplain with the local Disabled American Veterans Chapter.

Survivors include his wife Annette J. Thames of Sumter; a son, Reginald C. “Carl” Thames III and his wife Vickie of Sumter; two daughters, Marie T. Amerson and her husband Timmy and Mary Elizabeth T. Davis and her husband Todd of Sumter; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie and Stephen Amerson of Sumter.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Revs. Tom Lancaster, John Smith, Victor VanRas and Ted Windham officiated.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Karl Ford, Joey Tanner, Nick Shorter, Tim Russell, Steve Avin, Greg Johnson, Bob Palance, Jim Johnson, Rick Johnson and Mike Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Thomas Hawkey, Dr. Henry Moses, Dr. Mark Crabbe, Dr. Phil Brandt, Dr. Gary Culbertson, Dr. Linwood Bradford, Dr. John Guilds, Dickie Jones, Bill Tanner, Arnold Hall, C.A. Hoffman, Clint Ford, Blaine Leonard, Craig Reynolds, Norman Corbett, Lewis Rogers, Elvin Rogers, Pete McCoy, Jack Stokes, Robert Britton, Bud Gaskins and Terry Prescott.

Elouise F. Waiters
GREELEYVILLE - Elouise Frazier Waiters, 76, widow of Johnny Waiters Sr., died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Kingstree Nursing Facilities.

Born Sept. 6, 1925, in the Santee lake section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late James Frazier and Hestand Johnson Frazier, and the stepdaughter of the late Elizabeth Bennett Frazier and Lillie Pearson Frazier. She was educated in Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Society Hill AME Church, where she served on the stewardess board, the missionary society and the senior choir. She was also a member of the YMCA Lodge No. 2. She was a retired employee of Randolph’s Motel and Restaurant at the Santee lake dam.

Survivors include a stepmother, Lillie Pearson Frazier of Manning; four sons, Hasker Waiters, Robert L. Waiters and his wife Juanita of Manning, Adger Waiters and his wife Shirley of Greeleyville, and Johnny Waiters Jr. and his wife Arthelia of Summerton; a daughter, Esse Porter and her husband Lee of Buffalo, N.Y.; three brothers, the Rev. Pickney Frazier of Philadelphia, the Rev. Joseph Frazier and his wife Connie of Columbia and John Frazier and his wife Rebecca of Buffalo; three sisters, Ada Jones and her husband Robert, Maggie Hannah and Ruth Miles of Buffalo; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Adger and James Frazier.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Friday at Society Hill AME Church. The Rev. Leon Terry officiated, assisted by the Revs. Rufus Gaymon and O’Donald Dingle.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

John S. Dozier
John Shoid Dozier, newborn son of John Dozier and Paralee Pearson Dozier, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born Wednesday, May 1, 2002, in Sumter.

Survivors besides his parents include a maternal grandmother, Gerlean Pearson of Davis Station; paternal grandparents, Charles L. and Eula Smiling Dozier of Manning; a stepbrother, Terrill Pearson of Manning; and a stepsister, Latavia Pearson of Manning.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. Friday at the William Chapel cemetery. Elder Thomas Davis, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Emanuel King.

Mary F. Jones
Mary Alice Fordham Jones, 80, widow of John Henry Jones Sr., died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born March 12, 1922, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Fordham and Mary Briggs Fordham. She was educated in Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served on the missionary society. She was a cook for many families including the Jacksons, Goldsmiths, Eadons and Thortons and the Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include five sons, George Fordham, Melvin Jones and Lindell Jones of Manning, John H. Jones Jr. of Atlanta and Willard Jones of Washington; two daughters, Lillian Lemon and her husband Lee Ernest of Manning and Juanita Gipson of Florence; a sister, Julia Brunson of Manning; a sister-in-law, Irene Moore of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and an adopted sister, Lillie Mae Gamble of New York.

She was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Jones; and five sisters, Annie Montgomery, Alean Wright, Virginia Witherspoon, Susan Temoney and Martha Brunson.

Services were noon Saturday at Ebenezer Baptist Church. The Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Revs. Sylvester Hicks, Patrick Mellerson and evangelist Effie Hilton.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Efra G. Starks
Efra Gibson Starks, 81, wife of Charlie “Foots” Starks, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 15, 1920, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Eddie Gibson and Catherine “Kate” Pearson Gibson.

She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of New Bethel Holiness Church. She was a former member of Spring Hill Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors besides her husband include a son, Elijah Starks of Summerton; four daughters, Katie Mae Jones and her husband Moses, Barbara Turbeville and her husband Benjamin and Reather Bennett and her husband Nathan of Summerton and Barnett Bennett of Fort Washington, Md.; three sisters, Pastor Lilly Canty of Summerton and Clara LaVan and Bertha Taylor of New York; 27 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two adopted relatives, Rita and LeToya McFadden of the home.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at My Father’s House in Summerton. The Rev. Bobby McDonald officiated, assisted by the Revs. Otis Wright, Raymond Holiday, James Blanding and Willie Mood.

Burial followed in New Bethel Holiness Church cemetery.

Mary M. Budak
Mary Myers Budak, 74, wife of George Budak, died Monday, May 13, 2002, in McLeod Hospital.

Born May 14, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Nick and Mary Vlaud Myers. She was of the Romanian Eastern Orthodox faith and was a 1945 graduate of West Tech High School in Cleveland.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include two daughters, Deborah Lynn Chapman of North Myrtle Beach and Pamela Ann Geifking of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Sophia Moga of Cleveland; and four grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Stephens Funeral Home with Father Theoharis officiating.

Entombment followed in North Myrtle Beach Gardens.

Charles C. Osteen
Charles Cleveland “Pete” Osteen, 65, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Clarence E. Osteen and Weta Cockerill Osteen.

Mr. Osteen was a member of Calvary Nazarene Church and a self-employed contractor.

Survivors include four sons, Ricky Osteen, Johnny Osteen, Petie Osteen of Sumter and Peanut Osteen of Mt. Pleasant; five daughters, Sonja Osteen Curry, Shannon Osteen Bryant, Jennifer Osteen, Mary Elizabeth Lopez and Melissa Benenhaley of Sumter; a brother, Robert Henry “Hambone” Osteen of Sumter; three sisters, Daisy Osteen Jackson of Sumter, Ruby Osteen Cain of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Margie Lawrence of Springhill, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence “Dunkie” Osteen.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Nazarene Church with the Rev. Billy Williams and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Jo’Cordie L. Vaughn
Jo’Cordie Lewis W’ayne Vaughn, son of Sandara D. Vaughn and Jimmy L. Sigler, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 18, 2000, in Clarendon County.

Survivors besides his parents include a brother, Jimmy Jarrual Sigler of Sumter; two sisters, Ashley Q. Vaughn and Caetney R. Vaughn of the home; maternal grandparents, Joe L. and Delares Vaughn of Sumter; and parental grandmother, Jessie Mae Butler Sigler of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Joseph Sigler; and great-grandmother, Dorethea China.

Services were 4 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Cathedral Church with Apostle Sammy C. Smith officiating along with the Revs. Leroy T. James and Kenneth Choice assisting.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.
