Sarah Brunson
Sarah Brunson, 76, wife of Nathan Brunson, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 9, 1925, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Essza and Elmer Sweat. She was educated in Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood.

Survivors besides her husband include two sisters, Bessie Pugh of Paxville and Mable Jones and her husband Donald of Philadelphia.

She was preceded in death by a child.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were friends and family.

Marion D. Hancock
Bishopville - Marion Diann Hancock, 57, wife of Harvey D. Hancock, died Friday, August 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of Eunice B. McLeod and the late Marion W. Rumph. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church at Springhill.

Survivors besides her husband and mother include a stepfather, Jesse E. McLeod of Camden; a son, Kerry D. Hancock and his wife Leah of Turbeville; a daughter, Korye H. McCutchen and her husband Kirk of Camden; a brother, Mac Rumph of Fayetteville, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Kody McCutchen, Emme McCutchen and Dusty Hancock.

Services were 4 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vince Halter officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to St. John’s United Methodist Church, Route 1, Rembert, S.C.

Curtis W. Bradshaw
Curtis William Bradshaw died Saturday, August 10, 2002.

Born June 19,1962, in Manning, he was the son of Patricia Davis Bradshaw Stutts and the late Loyal Lynwood Bradshaw. He was a retired florist and a member of the Deliverance Victory Praise Ministry.

Survivors beside his mother and stepfather, Harry D. Stutts of Round O, include a brother, Terry Bradshaw of Sumter; and two sisters, Cynthia Bernier of Round O and Patricia Marie Taylor of Loris.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at Stuhr’s North Area Chapel.

Burial followed in Gruber Cemetery in Round O.

George Ervin Sain
VALE, N.C. – George Ervin Sain, died Monday afternoon, August 19, 2002, at his home after an extended illness.

Family received friends at Hull’s Grove Baptist Church, Vale, N.C., on Wednesday evening. A celebration of his life will be held at Hull’s Grove Baptist Church at 5 p.m. today. A scattering service will follow at the family farm with the Rev. Marcus Redding officiating.

Sain is survived by his wife, Carole Simerly Sain of the home, one son, Chip and his wife Camille of Vale, two daughters, Terry Shepherd and husband Jerry of Newton, N.C., and Stephanie Black and her husband Jeffrey of Manning; four grandchildren Bryan and Tera Shepherd of Orlando, Fla., and Elizabeth and John Landon Black of Manning. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Taltha Scronce of Vale and Mrs. Helen Turner of Lincolnton, N.C. Numerous nephews and nieces also survive.

Memorials may be made to Grace Christian Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 95, Manning.

Fred M. Ardis Sr.
Fred Mathis Ardis Sr., 78, husband of Frances Thigpen Ardis, died Sunday, November 24, 2002, in Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Born Nov. 25, 1923, in Pinewood, he was the son of the late Newell LeGrande Ardis and the late Eva Broadway Ardis. He worked with B.F. Hill, and was a retired contractor after 52 years. He was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Manning; two sons, Fred M Ardis Jr., and wife, Elaine, of Cowards and William LeGrande “Billy” Ardis and wife, Debbie, of Manning; two daughters, Sandra Floyd, and husband, J.C., of Manning, and Patty Rogers and husband, Dargan, of Charleston; a sister, Edith Singleton of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Todd Ardis.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Lloyd Ackerman officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Paul Sullivan.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Phynnis E. Arthur Sr.
Phynnis Edward Arthur Sr., 73, husband of Nell Goodman Arthur, of Manning, died Thursday, November 28, 2002, at a Charleston hospital.

Born July 21, 1929, in Covington, Va., he was the son of John Mayfield Arthur and Gladys Gray Kirby. He was a retired Foreman for Westvaco, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Carolina Masonic Lodge #375, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Omar Shrine Temple, and American Legion Post #0068.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Nell Goodman Arthur of Manning; two sons, Phynnis E. Arthur Jr. of Allendale, S.C., and Donald A. Arthur of Moncks Corner; one daughter, Dana Arthur-Tolle of Summerville; two sisters, Betty Jean Martin of Silver Spring, Md. and Patricia Varner of Anderson, S.C.; two stepbrothers, Archie Webster of Charleston and Robert Webster of Barnwell, S.C.; one granddaughter, Bridgett Thames of Fairfax, S.C.; three grandsons, Tradd Tolle, Carson Tolle and Ethan Tolle of Summerville; and two great-grandsons, Trey Allen and Nolan Thames of Fairfax.

Services were held Saturday, Nov. 30, at Parks Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial followed in Summerville Cemetery.

Harriett E. Brewer
Harriett Edith Brewer, 62, died Friday, November 29, 2002, in St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Charleston.

Born Aug. 6, 1940, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Millard Garrell Brewer and the late Harriett Rebecca Bagnal Brewer. She was retired secretary of Walker Tire Company and was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Barney Lee Brewer Morris of Turbeville, Becky Brewer Bradham and her husband, Johnny, of Mt. Pleasant, Martha Herlong and her husband, Don, of Sumter; a brother, William “Bill” Brewer and his wife, Irene, of Manning; seven nieces and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Bethea Morris.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Revs. Clyde Bagnal and George Gain officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Manning.

Pallbearers included Roger Flowers Jr., Robby Jordan, Michael Fleck, Mike Windham, Cag Brunson, Shannon Barwick, Kerry Brewer and Darrell Turner.

Honorary pallbearers included employees of Walker Tire Company.

Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Methodist Church, 1060 Colonels Run, Manning, S.C. 29102.

John K. Brogdon
John Kirkpatrick Brogdon, 78, husband of Carolyn Wilder Brogdon, died Saturday, November 30, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 29, 1924, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Sam John Brogdon and the late Lois Kirkpatrick Brogdon. He was a retired farmer, a World War II Air Force veteran, and a deacon, former usher and member of Manning First Baptist Church and the Crusaders Sunday School class.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning are a daughter, Jane Brogdon Best and her husband, the Rev. David Best, of Kernersville, N.C.; a sister, Rebecca Brogdon Davis of Jackson, Tenn.; a grandson, John David Best; and a granddaughter, Rachel Best.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in Manning First Baptist Church with the Revs. Danny Bridges and David Best officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Julia H. Driggers
Julia Harriet Driggers, 79, widow of Douglas W. Driggers, died Wednesday, November 27, 2002, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse James Hicks and Eva Baggett Hicks. She was a member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church, the ladies auxiliary, and the food committee chairwoman of the church for more than 40 years. She was retired from East Clarendon District 3 school food service. She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include a son, William Driggers of Turbeville; a daughter, Annette Johnson and her husband, Ed, of Lynchburg; three brothers, Elbert Hicks and his wife, Kay, and Jim Hicks and his wife, Marilda, of Turbeville, and Billy Hicks of Lexington; a sister, Myrtle Riggs and her husband, Marion, of Manning; four grandchildren, Lisa Ard and her husband, Ike, and Michelle Johnson of Lynchburg, Robbie Johnson of Goose Creek, and Diedra Johnson of Orlando, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Douglas Ard and William Ard of Lynchburg.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Rob Ard.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Burial followed in St. James Cemetery.

Martha B. McLeod
Martha Bagnal McLeod, 61, widow of Joseph Adam McLeod, died Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at her home in Manning.

Born June 19, 1941, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Taylor and Annie Virginia Holliday Bagnal. She was former manager of Shoe Show in Manning, a member of Wilson United Methodist Church and attended New Start Community Church.

Survivors include two sons, Joey McLeod and his wife, Shirley, of Manning and Jack McLeod and his wife, Mildred, of Sumter; two daughters, Martha Ann Hutchinson and Debbie Lucas and her husband, Henry, of Manning; a brother, William “Bubba” Bagnal of Manning; four sisters, Mary Lee of Andrews, Rosalie Cooper of Georgetown, and Ruby Lowder and Annie Sills of Manning; and 10 grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Jordan United Methodist Church cemetery with the Revs. Dale Turner and Pete Hudson officiating.

Pallbearers included Mitch Gardner, J.T. Coursey, Jack Lowder, Marion Therrell, Roy Hopkins and Keith Hopkins.

Memorials may be made to New Start Community Church, 4686 J. W. Rhames Road, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Bible Way Holiness Church in Sumter.
