Edna C. Horton
Edna Chewning Horton, 90, widow of William Everette Horton Sr., died Friday, January 3, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 17, 1912, in Davis Station, she was the daughter of the late Richard W. and Anne Graham Chewning. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church and retired Postmaster at Davis Station.

Survivors include a son, W.E. Horton Jr. of Manning; two daughters, Joan Byrdic of Rock Hill and Frances Elliott of Summerton; a brother, Charlie Chewning of Columbia; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Carolyn Malphrus officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Summerton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 35, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Betty Lou W. Johnson
Betty Lou White Johnson, 74, died Sunday, December 29, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Center in Summerton.

Born Nov. 24, 1928, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Abe White Sr. and Lou Jane Montgomery White. She attended Clarendon County public schools and, in her youth, Green Hill Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Survivors include a son, Louis Johnson of the home; three brothers, Abe White Sr. and his wife, Rosa, of Greeleyville, Clezelle White and his wife, Feddie Lee, of Manning and Elijah White and his wife, Mary Ann, of Florence; four sisters, Alvertis White and Viree White of Manning, Sadie Young and her husband, James, and Violet Chapman and her husband, Robert, of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Susie Ann White.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Samuels Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Cokley Richburg officiating, assisted by evangelist Elizabeth Richburg.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Earl L. McElveen
Columbia - Earl L. McElveen, 82, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at his home in Columbia.

Born March 8, 1920, in Olanta, S.C., he was the son of the late Ernest F. and Adell Smith McElveen. He taught school for over 40 years, was an avid gardener and loved working with his flowers. He was a graduate of Olanta High School, received a BA degree at Newberry College and Master’s degree at the University of S.C. He was a WWII Army veteran, and served four years in the Pacific. He was a member and served as a member of Congregation Counsel of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Columbia.

Survivors include two sisters, Monte M. Gaymon and husband, Rev. Freddie Gaymon, of Sumter and Sara M. Smith and husband, William, of Cades; a brother, Donald E. McElveen and wife, Margaret, of Columbia; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Grace.

He was preceded in death by a brother Milton F. McElveen.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church with Pastor Christine Parham officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210, or Hospice of Richland County, or Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 6904 Satchel Ford Rd., Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Pearly R. Ridgeway
Pearly Ridgeway Ridgeway, 72, widow of Ernest L. Ridgeway Sr., died Sunday, December 29, 2002, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 22, 1930, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late James Martin Ridgeway and the late Gettys White Ridgeway. She was a retired restaurant manager, and a lifelong member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Vonnie Ridgeway and wife, Jennie, of Manning; two daughters, Debbie Anderson and husband, Charles, and Carol Stukes and husband, Van, of Manning; a half-brother, Ronald Dean Ridgeway of Oklahoma; two stepbrothers, Edward Holliday of Anderson and Alvin Holliday of Sumter; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Ridgeway; two brothers, Rudolph and Goldman Ridgeway; and a sister, Sylvia Ridgeway.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Larry Hughes and Kenneth Upright officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

The Men of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

David D. Welch
David Dupree Welch, 66, husband of Laura Knowlton Welch, died Wednesday, January 1, 2003, in McLeod Hospital in Florence.

Born March 29, 1936, in New Zion, he was the son of the late James Carson Welch and the late Mae Goodman Welch. He was retired line foreman for Sumter Utilities, Inc., a member of the Woodmen of the World, and a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of New Zion; two sons, Dupree Randal Welch of Lake City and David Michael Welch of New Zion; a daughter, Laura Sandra Thompson of Loganville, Ga.; six sisters, Willie Mae Thames and Mary Welch of New Zion, Annie Rae DuBose and Lois Ann DuBose of Turbeville, Doris Altman of Timmonsville and Carolyn McGee of Sardis; four brothers, Jackson Welch and Charles Welch of Sumter, Curtis Welch of New Zion, and Wayne Welch of Marion; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Carson Welch Jr. and Bonnie Welch.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in Turbeville First Baptist Church with the Revs. Bert Petty and Richard Hudson officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Van Fund of Turbeville First Baptist Church.

Hummin Eliza Tobias
Sumter - Hummin Eliza Richburg Tobias, 71, widow of Kenneth O. Tobias, died Saturday, January 11, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 7, 1931, in Manning, she was the daughter of Geneva Mitchum Richburg and the late Rubin Richburg. She was retired from quality control at Elkay Manufacturing in Manning, and was a member of Graham Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother of Manning; a daughter, Genny Tobias Waynick and husband, George Waynick Jr., of Sumter; a son, Ken O. Tobias Jr. and wife, Elizabeth Lindsay Tobias, of Irmo; three sisters, Pauline R. Horton of Manning, Ruby R. Lane of Florence, and Cleo R. Farley of Manning; and a grandson, William Kenneth Tobias.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kelvin Tobias; and a sister, Evalina R. Ardis.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. John Patrick officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Leon Tobias, Alvin Tobias, Dane Brown, Jeff Davis, Robbie Elmore and Terry Squires.

Memorials may be made to Graham Baptist Church, 4140 U.S. Hwy. 521 S., Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Madge K. Turner
Madge Kolb Turner, 93, widow of Harmon Turner, died Wednesday, January 8, 2003, in National Health Care of Sumter.

Born Sept. 13, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Carrie McLeod Kolb. She was first married to Lonnie Lawrence. She was of the Jehovah Witness faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Caughman of Sumter and Jeanette Lawrence of Oak Island, N.C.; a son, Robert Lawrence of Riverdale, Ga.; a sister, Hazel Kolb Dilworth of Paxville; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ernest Lawrence.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Paxville Cemetery with the Rev. Gene Mosier officiating.

Adele U. Walker
Adele “Deck” Ulmer Walker, 87, widow of William Seay Walker, died Sunday in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Dec. 15, 1915, in Elloree, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Summers Ulmer and the late Adele Quintillia Dantzler Ulmer. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, taught the first grade, and was owner and operator of the laundromat in Manning. She was a member of Summerton Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Horton and husband, Jack, of Davis Station and Sandra Wells and husband, Gene, of Summerton; a son, Dr. W. S. Walker Jr. and wife, Debbie Odom Walker; three sisters, Summers Perkins of Clemson, Gwendolyn Hodges of Atlanta, Ga., and Celia Holt of Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Summerton Baptist Church with the Revs. Rob Pierce and Tom Mellette officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Ken Wells, Walker Wells, John Horton, Seay Walker, Matt Ward, Dean Keller and Tripp James.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Summerton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, S.C. 29148

Idella T. Brailsford
Idella Tindal Brailsford, widow of Ferdinand Brailsford, died Friday, January 4, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Phiebe and Lawrence Tindal. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a lifelong member of Santee AME Church, where she served as a class leader for a number of years. She was also active with the YWCA Lodge.

Survivors include four sons, Jonathan Brailsford and James Brailsford of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Ferdinand Brailsford Jr. and Thomas Brailsford of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Willie Mae Merritt of Raleigh, N.C., Dorothy Garris of Baltimore and Christie Franked of Summerton; a sister, the Rev. Queenie Bennett of Summerton; 40 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Santee AME Church with the Revs. Silas Spann and S.R. Miott officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
