Mitchell L. Scarborough Sr.
Mitchell Linton Scarborough Sr., 94, husband of Daisy Ragin Scarborough, died Thursday, January 10, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Neves, West Indies, he was the son of the late Edward and Mariah Scarborough.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Mitchell Scarborough Jr. of Bronx, N.Y., Lipton Scarborough of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Carnell and Kevin Scarborough of Canada; four daughters, Mille Scarborough of the home, Rose and Jean Scarborough of Bronx and Anica Scarborough of Neves; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton with the Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Sylvester Adger Sr.
Sylvester Adger Sr., 76, husband of Elizabeth L. Adger, died Saturday, January 11, 2003, at Windsor Manor, Manning.

Born March 29, 1926, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Charlie Adger Sr. and Mamie Walters Adger. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter. He was employed by Williams Furniture Co. (formerly Georgia Pacific), where he retired. In his youth, he joined the St. Mark Baptist Church in Silver, where he later served as a member of the trustee board, the gospel choir and the male chorus.

Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Leonard Adger Sr. of Manning, John Earl Adger (Juanita) of Sumter, Franklin Adger of Nashua, N.H., Jerome Adger of Manning and Sylvester Adger Jr. of Sumter; five daughters, Minnie Ross Thomas of Sumter, Sarah A. Law (Randy) of Sumter, Betty A. Lyons of Manning, Barbara J. Adger of Augusta, Ga., and Melissa Adger of Manning; a brother, Charlie Adger Jr. of Sumter; five sisters, Liny Mae Woods of Washington, D.C., Helen Prince (Marion) of Sumter, Louise Major of Sumter, Gladys Singleton (Powell) of Sumter and Beulah Williams of Bronx, N.Y.; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sons, James LeGrant and Joseph Adger; a daughter, Evelyn; and three brothers, Lee Moses Adger, James Walters and Johnny Adger Sr.

Services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Mark Baptist Church , Silver, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.H. Pringle.

Burial followed in St. Mark Baptist Church cemetery.

Cince Dukes
Sumter - Cince Dukes, 79, died Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at Hopewell Healthcare Facility in Sumter.

Born May 27, 1924, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Bungy Dukes and Mary Reed Dukes. She attended Reeseville School in Clarendon County.

Survivors include a brother, Julius (Vernice) Dukes Sr. of Manning; a sister-in-law, Julia R. Dukes of Sumter; and a brother-in-law, Julius Daniels of Sumter.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Scriven Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Carnell Dukes officiating.

Burial followed in Reeseville AME Church cemetery.

Addie M. Floyd Hodge
Greeleyville - Addie Mae Floyd Hodge, 77, widow of Charlie Calvin Hodge, died Thursday, January 16, 2003, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Sept. 17, 1925, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie R. and Vera Lynch Floyd. She was a retired seamstress from the Wise Company, a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, and attended New Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Marty Hodge and wife, Mary, of Manning and Joey Hodge and wife, Ramona, of Greeleyville; three brothers, Henry Floyd of Manning, Elro Floyd of Turbeville and Johnny Floyd of Tucker, Ga.; a sister, Nettie Ridgeway of Manning; and two grandchildren, Kelly Caudill and Erin Hodge.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Manning with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating.

Burial followed in Foreston Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Archie Ard, Butler Browder, Bennie Watts, Louis Hodge, David Floyd, Roger Floyd, Mike Floyd, Russ Floyd, Bobby Ridgeway and Woody Michau.

Memorials may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 2833 Alex Harvin Hwy., Manning, S.C. 29102 or to the Arthritis Foundation, or to Foreston Cemetery.

William P. James Sr.
Sumter - William Penn “Penny” James Sr., 59, died Friday, January 17, 2003, in Rimini.

Born June 14, 1943, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Samuel Allen and Julia Fairy James.

He was a member of Williams Chapel AME Church and later joined Felderville AME Church in Santee. He was a graduate of Manchester High School Class of 1960. He earned a bachelor of science and master’s of education degree from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg and completed further studies at the University of South Carolina-Columbia.

He was employed as an agriculture teacher at Jenkins High School in Harleyville and at Scott’s Branch High School in Clarendon County. Later, he served as assistant principal at Scott’s Branch High School, where he retired in August 1993. After retirement, he worked as a construction contractor.

Survivors include two sons, William Penn James Jr. and his wife, Georgia, of Charlotte and Wayne Ulmer James of Orangeburg; two daughters, Whenda James Williams and her husband, Wayne, of Atlanta and Candye Velazquez of Columbia; five brothers, Wiley P. James, Washington C. James, the Rev. Saymon James, Wilkie James and Harold James; four sisters, Julia B. Boyd, Florance E. Knight, Ruth Diane James and Alice M. Cummings; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by Sammy James III.

Services were held at noon Tuesday at Antioch AME Church, with the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor, presiding, the Rev. L.E. Simmons, eulogist, assisted by Pastor Stanley E. Hayes Sr., the Rev. Manuel Fogle, Pastor Marion Newton, and Presiding Elder Rev. W.J. Baxter.

Burial followed at Antioch Cemetery in Rimini.

Pallbearers included Carver Antonia James, Michale L. Boyd, Kenneth K. Boyd, Carlos Lorenzo James, Marion L. Boyd and Harold Anthony James.

Floral bearers included nieces.

Thomasena N. Junious
Thomasena “Tommie” Nelson Junious, 36, wife of Richard Junious Jr., died Saturday, January 11, 2003, at Tri-County Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg.

Born Sept. 16, 1966, in Summerton, she was the daughter of Laurena Nelson and Chino Lawson and stepdaughter of John H. Thompson. She received her education at Scott’s Branch Elementary School and I.S. 118 School, Bronx, N.Y. She accepted Christ at an early age at St. Phillip UME Church, Pinewood.

Survivors besides her mother of Summerton, stepfather of Manning, father of Thomasville, N.C., and husband of Manning include a brother, Gebran Thompson of Bronx; a stepbrother, Tony Lawson of Thomasville; a sister, Angela Thompson of Bronx; two stepsisters, Marvalyn Brunson of Rimini and Loretta Lawson of Greensboro, N.C.; an adopted sister, Patrica Nelson of Bronx; and an adopted brother, Murray Nelson of Bronx.

Services were held at noon Saturday at St. Phillip UME Church on St. Phillip UME Church Road, Pinewood, with the Rev. James Williams, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. James Robinson, Jacob Clark and Roosevelt Boyd.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Jewel Pearson
Jewel Pearson, 64, died Thursday, January 9, 2003, in Manning.

Born June 20, 1938, in Manning, he was the son of the late John and Annie Bell Clark Pearson.

He was educated in Mt. Zion Community Church School and at the Clarendon County Disability and Special Needs Board.

Survivors include five sisters, Ethel Brock, Lottie Pearson, Bertha Pearson and Pernell and her husband, James Hammett, of Manning, and Mazie Pearson of Kansas City, Mo.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Triumph The Church and Kingdom of God In Christ, Davis Station community, Manning, with Elder Sampson Pearson, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Donnie Chatman assisting.

Burial followed in Carolina-Johnson Cemetery, Davis Station.

Nellie S. Thompson
Sumter - Nellie Sinkler Thompson, 91, widow of David Thompson, died Thursday, January 9, 2003, at Hopewell Healthcare Center.

Born May 26, 1911, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Lillie McKnight Sinkler. She was a member of Antioch AME Church, Pinewood. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She lived most of her life in the Pinewood and Rimini communities, where she and her late husband owned and operated a convenience store in the sandhills for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Thompson of New York, N.Y.; a sister, Sarah Sinkler McBride of Rimini; a grandson, Matthew David Thompson of North Carolina; a daughter-in-law, Mary Pleasant McFadden of Pinewood; a goddaughter, Pearl Brunson of Pinewood; two godsons, Clarence Hawkins of Baltimore and Richard McKnight of Pinewood; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mollie A. Sinkler; a son, Matthew Thompson; and five brothers, Vemelle, Julius, Samuel, Odell and Moses Sinkler.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Sylvester R. Miott, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers included trustees of Antioch and Zion Hill AME churches.

Floral bearers included the missionary society of Antioch and Zion Hill AME churches.

Charles M. Burke Jr.
Carless Milford Burke Jr., 79, husband of Eva Ruth Stubblefield Burke, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 5, 1922, in Lake Charles, La., he was the son of the late Carless Milford Burke Sr. and Ollie Lee Burke. He was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church, Dorchester Masonic Lodge No. 369, Scottish Rites and Omar Temple. He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran with 30 years of service as a flight inspector.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include two daughters, Glenda Burke of Mt. Pleasant and Cynthia Warren of North Charleston; a son, Milford Wayne Burke of Hudson, Fla.; a stepbrother, James Barber of Bossier City, La.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Lynn Burke.

Services were 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Tompkins officiating. Burial with full military honors followed in Carolina Memorial Gardens in North Charleston.

Local pallbearers were Kevin Hogg, Paul Hogg, Christopher Jennings, Wayne Nettles, Larry Warren and John Vohs.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
