Margaret C. Nelson
ORANGEBURG - Margaret Christine Stukes Williams Nelson, 93, widow of Glenn W. Williams and J. Earl Nelson, died Thursday, January 10, 2002, at her home, “Cricket’s Creek,” in Orangeburg.

Born April 16, 1908, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Augustus “Gus” Stukes and Margaret Christine Bowman Harvin-Stukes. She was orphaned at 7-months-old and raised with her siblings by their grandmother, the late Dinah Beshet Bowman. She worked faithfully in her childhood church of Historic Liberty Hill AME in Summerton, which her grandmother helped pioneer when it was a bush arbor. While living in New York she attended Mt. Hope AME Zion Church in White Plains for more than 50 years. In her elder years, she returned to South Carolina and continued to support both Liberty Hill and Cedar Grove United Methodist churches in Orangeburg.

She was skilled at crocheting. She made several recordings recounting stories and events of yesteryear. She was active, not only in church where she served in several official capacities, but also as a worker and volunteer in the various communities in which she lived. These ranged from volunteering in children’s hospitals in Westchester County, N.Y., to serving for five years as president of the Clarendon County Extension Homemakers Club and also serving for five years as chaplain for the Orangeburg chapter of AARP. She received many awards for her efforts.

Survivors include six daughters, Dorita E. Mitchell, Lyttle D. Williams, Doris W. Karlsson, Ekundayo Azibo, Monifo Azibo and Keisha Evans; a special son-in-law, A. Peter Evans; six grandchildren, Shabaka Azibo, Carol Douglas, Joan Douglas, Kundi Azibo, Erik Karlsson and Dawn Pitt; the children and families of her second husband, Maggie Collins and her husband, Roger, Patricia Daniels and her husband, Freeman, Sarah Redmond and her husband, Charles, and Jarrot Nelson and George Johnson; and five grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi Duncan, pastor, officiating.

Willie Pendergrass
PHILADELPHIA - Willie “Bishop” Pendergrass, 72, widower of Annie Mae Reid Pendergrass, died Monday, January 14, 2002.

Born Oct. 8, 1929, in Williamsburg County, he was the son of the late Samuel and Rosa Virginia Sabb Pendergrass. He attended Santee Rosenwald School and in his youth, joined Pine Grove AME Church in Clarendon County. He later moved to Philadelphia and joined Morris Brown AME Church. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after his tour of duty. He worked for Levy and Sons as a laborer and later for Colanero and Co. where he worked for a number of years as a foreman. He retired in 1991.

Survivors include a son, William Matthew Pendergrass of Philadelphia; two daughters, Susan Denise Brinkley of Philadelphia and Zindorah Patrice Pendergrass of Denver, Colo.; three brothers, Nero Pendergrass and George Pendergrass of Manning and Samuel Christopher Pendergrass of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Sadie Dupree of Manning; two granddaughters, Samantha Brinkley and Shameika Pendergrass; and a great-granddaughter, Cissile Alise Edwards.

Services were 10 a.m. Saturday at Keene and Carney Funeral Home in Philadelphia. Burial followed in White Chapel Cemetery in Seaserville, Pa.

Ruby P. Bryant
Ruby Pearl Bryant, 84, widow of Sphinks Thomas Bryant Sr., died Friday, January 24, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born May 21, 1918, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Mood and Edell Jones Hodge. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Home Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Bobby Jordan Bryant of Paxville, Joe H. Bryant and Gerald F. Bryant of Sumter, Sphinks Thomas Bryant Jr., of Manning, and William Dean Bryant of Umatilla, Fla.; a daughter, Rosa B. Southerly of Summerton; a brother, Hazel Hodge of Bowie, Md.; a sister, Lou Harvin of Paxville; 27 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Home Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. John Hall and Gene Mosier officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Home Branch Baptist Church, 1667 Stone Rd., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Henrietta C. Frizzell
Norfolk, Va. - Henrietta “Hennie” Clark Frizzell, 83, died January 22, 2003, in a local hospital.

She was a retired teacher for Fair Meadows private Preschool, a member of Kempsville Baptist Church for 56 years, the Dorcas Sunday School class and the Huguenot Society of S.C.

Survivors include two sons, Howard Clark Frizzell and his wife, Bobbie, of Norfolk and Dick Caldwell of Inman, S.C.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Boyer and Sarah Caviness of Virginia Beach, Va., and one great-grandson, Cole Boyer of Virginia Beach.

She was predeceased by her husband, H. Wendell Frizzell, and her parents, Dr. Plumer Clark and Kate Clark of Davis Station, S.C.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, at Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Kelly Burris officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Kempsville Baptist Church Building fund, 5204 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, Va. 23462.

Roma Holliday
Dorchester, Mass. - Roma Holliday, 76, died Thursday, January 16, 2003, at Carnell Hospital, Dorchester, Mass.

Born Aug. 30, 1925, in the Home Branch section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Sepp Holliday and Rosa Briggs Holliday. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church, serving on the usher board and gospel choir. As an adult he attended Concord Baptist Church in Boston, Mass. He was a retired employee of 40 years at Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Survivors include a sister, Donna H. Richardson of Manning; and two sisters-in-law, Sallie Holliday of Boston, Mass., and Dessie Wilson of Manning.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Sr., Sepp Jr. and James Allen Holliday; and a sister, Willie Mae H. Thames.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity AME Church in Manning, with the Rev. John Fredricks officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

Floral bearers were friends of the family.

Floride H. Clardy
Floride Hawkins Clardy, 64, widow of Jimmy Olin Clardy, died Sunday, January 26, 2003, at her home in Manning.

Born June 2, 1938, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Leslie W. and Marjorie Scarborough Hawkins. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Estel and husband, Don, of Manning; a son, Jimmy O. Clardy Jr., and wife, Vivian Arrowood Clardy, of Manning; a brother, L.W. Hawkins of Charleston; two sisters, Annie H. Coulter and Carline Hawkins of Charleston; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Gagne officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Elizabeth B. Brunson
Elizabeth “Chic” Briggs Brunson, 84, widow of William Hartwell Brunson Jr., died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born May 7, 1918, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Brailsford and Lalla DesChamps Briggs. She was a retired bookkeeper at Brunson’s Pharmacy, a member of Manning United Methodist Church, past president of the Azalea Garden Club and past recording secretary of the Garden Club of South Carolina.

Survivors include a daughter, Beth B. Mathis and husband, Len, of Manning; and a grandson, Lenny Mathis of Spartanburg.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in Manning Cemetery with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Floreed B. Pelfrey
Floreed Baird Pelfrey, 74, widow of Joe Curtis Pelfrey Sr., died Thursday, January 24, 2002, at her home in Alcolu.

Born July 28, 1927, in New Zion, she was the daughter of the late Henry Wheeler Baird and Annie Eunice Baird Baird. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Spigner of Alcolu; two sons, Joe Curtis Pelfrey Jr. and J. Wayne Pelfrey of Alcolu; two sisters, Inez Baird of Sumter and Carolyn Schilling of Lexington; two brothers, O’Neal Baird of Florence and Tommy Morris of Turbeville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mack Pelfrey.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Fred Treaster and Walter Phillips officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Charles D. Nelson Sr.
Charles Daniel Nelson Sr., 84, husband of Arlene Lacy Nelson, died Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at his home in Gable.

Born May 1, 1917, in Rochester, N.Y., he was the son of the late Homer John Nelson and Alice Gorton Nelson. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, and retired from Kodak Co. after 41 years. Mr. Nelson was a member of Masonic Order Blue Lodge ERAC in Rochester, and of Sardinia Presbyterian Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Gable include three sons, Charles D. “Chip” Nelson of Gable and Jack Thomas Nelson and David Allen Nelson of Rochester; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Sardinia Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon Reed officiating. Burial followed in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sardinia Presbyterian Church.

Clara P. June
Clara P. June, 73, wife of George June, died Friday, January 18, 2002, at her home.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Boney B. Parker and Eva White Parker. She was a member of the New Testament Lighthouse Church.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include a daughter, Marlene J. Geddings; two grandsons, Dwayne Geddings and Brian Geddings; two granddaughters, Audrey Shirley and Paula Thynes of Sumter; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Beauregard Parker, James Arthur Parker and Adrian Parker; and a sister, Alice Davis.

Services were 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Calvin Nesbitt officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, P.O. Box 325, Sumter, S.C. 29151.
