Lorena Liles
COLUMBIA -- Lorena Liles, widow of Harry V. Liles, died Sunday, January 27, 2002.

Born in Lone Star, she was the daughter of the late Carrie E. and William Calhoun Zeagler Sr. She was a graduate of Newberry College, and was a teacher for several years in the Batesburg-Leesville school system and later retired from McCrory’s Five and Ten Store. Mrs. Liles was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Trannie Musselwhite, Mattie Welch and Helen Fulmer of Columbia; four nieces; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home. Burial followed in Elmwood Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Reformation Lutheran Church.

Murray Smiling Sr.
Murray Smiling Sr., 85, widower of Evelyn Witherspoon Smiling, died January 29, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.

Born Aug. 2, 1917, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Jack Smiling and Sarah Sweat Smiling. He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County. He joined Bethesda Baptist in Sumter at an early age and later he attended Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Murray Smiling Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Sanford, Conn., James Riley, Louis Riley and his wife, Sylvia, and Jack Smiling and his wife, Norma, of Manning; five daughters, Flora Riley of Oakland, Calif., Lizzie Johnson, Leila Carson and her husband, Kenneth, and Joann Smiling of Sumter, and Margie Gaymon and her husband, Randolph, of Columbia; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Winston; and a brother, Harry Smiling.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church, Manning, with Elder Shelley Hickson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister Gregory Wilson and Michael Gilbert, Evangelist Lizzie A. Johnson and Willie Mae Tomlin.

Burial followed in the Bethesda Baptist Church in Sumter.

Pallbearers included trustees.

Floral bearers included the missionary society.

Dorothy B. Johnson
Dorothy Blackwell Johnson, 62, of Manning, died Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 10, 1939, in the Bloomville community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Ned and Mildred Stukes Blackwell. She attended Manning Training School. In her youth, she joined Reeseville AME Church and later joined Household Faith Holiness Church of Manning. She retired from Central Coffee Shop in Manning as a cook.

Survivors include four sons, Roosevelt Blackwell of Turbeville, Robert Blackwell and Richard Johnson of Manning and Wallace Johnson of the home; three daughters, Edna Brown of Orangeburg and Roshell Mathis and Mildretta Johnson of Manning; a brother, Minister Johnathan Blackwell of Manning; four sisters, Laura Felder of Alcolu, Mary Blackwell of New York, N.Y., Lillie Williams of Manning and Rena Reid of Miami, Fla.; and 17 grandchildren.

Services were 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Reeseville AME Church with the Rev. Marie Harvin, pastor, officiating and the Revs. James Lesene, Clifton Gaymon, S.W. Whack Jr. and Minister Johnathan Blackwell assisting.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Ruby M. Jordan
Ruby McLeod Jordan 88, widow of Joseph F. Blitch died Saturday, February 2, 2002, in East Cooper Hospital.

Born Oct. 19, 1913, in Florence, she was the daughter of the late William and Naomi McLeod. She was a retired registered nurse.

Survivors include a son, Joseph William Blitch of Brandon, Fla.; a daughter, Dr. Dyana Lowndes-Rosen of Mt. Pleasant; and three grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday in Paxville Cemetery with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.

Martha D. Webb
Martha “Mattie” Davis Webb, 97, widow of Jefferson Webb, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 5, 1904, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Luke and Martha Davis. In her youth, she joined Mt. Moriah UME Church in Alcolu, where she served faithfully with the missionary society, Sunday school and choir. She was a longtime member of the Sons and Daughters of Job.

Survivors include two sons, Clarence Webb and George Webb of Sumter; a daughter, Fannie L. Ford of Sumter; a sister, Sarah Jane Hudson of Norwalk, Conn.; her caregiver, Janie Pack; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul AME Church with the Rev. B.J. Glover, pastor, officiating, the Rev. Patrick Mellerson assisting and the Rev. Willie Green, pastor of Mt. Moriah UME Church, delivering the eulogy.

Burial followed in Congruity Cemetery.

Mary Alice Barwick
Mary Alice Way Barwick, 66, wife of J.M. Barwick Jr., died Tuesday, February 18, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Dec. 25, 1936, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Charlton C. and Blanche Way Way. She was former owner of Barwick’s Flower and Gift Shop for over 20 years, co-owner of Barwick’s Monuments in Manning and a retail merchant in Manning since 1960. She was a member of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church for over 20 years.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, Joseph M. Barwick III of the home; a daughter, Angie Jordan, and husband, Bill, of Manning; two sisters, Elva W. Albertson and Barbara Jane Way of Ridgeland; and two granddaughters, Mary Ashley Jordan and Amanda Paige Jordan.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Morris Smith, Stephen Bowe and Charlie Salter officiating.

Burial will follow in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Underwood, Tommy Infinger, Jackie Cutter, Rusty Clemmer, Robert Brunson and Whitney Newman.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons and deaconesses of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church, and Ruby Lane.

Memorials may be made to Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 391, Manning, SC 29102, or to Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1794 Georgetown Road, Manning.

Margie L. Burgess
Sumter - Margie Lorraine Burgess, 46, died Sunday, February 9, 2003 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 5, 1956, she was the daughter of Lula Bell Burgess and John Wesley Burgess Sr. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Manning High School with the Class of 1975. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She was employed for many years with the Hampton Nursing Center, the Sumter Dialysis Center and, before her departure, she was employed with the Lake Marion Nursing Center in Summerton.

Survivors besides her parents include three brothers, John Burgess and James Larry of Thomasville, N.C., and Robert Burgess of Sumter; and six sisters, Virginia Canty, Loretta Gamble and Dianne Burgess of Sumter, Ida Bell Billups of Paxville, Celestine Huggins of Atlanta and Letha Adams of Charlotte, N.C.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Lennon Burgess.

Services were held Friday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. Edward Sanders, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. D.L. Grant, Clifford Gaymon and L.W. Barnes.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Elizabeth M. James
Elizabeth “Liz” McCray James, 74, widow of Alex James, died February 8, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born June 3, 1928, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Centry McCray Sr. and Frances Washington McCray and stepdaughter of the late William Brown. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She received her LPN from John Hopkins School of Nursing, Baltimore. She joined Green Hill Baptist Church in Alcolu, serving as an usher, missionary and choir member. She was employed as a RTA specialist until retiring in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Michael (Dorethea) James of Sumter; three daughters, Gwendolyn McCray of Alcolu, Frances Ann James of Florence and Elaine James of Columbia; three brothers, Centry McCray Jr. of Millerville, Md., Willie Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Alonza (Ora) McCray of Queens, N.Y.; two sisters, Dorothy Brown and Roberta M. (Samuel) Gigger Jr., of Chicago; a stepson, Alphonzo (Mary Ann) Nelson of Manning; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Tonia James.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. W.J. Frierson and Minister David Woods.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

John W. McKnight
John Wesley McKnight, 73, husband of Easter Stukes McKnight, died Tuesday, February 11, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, S.C.

Born Feb. 10, 1930, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Moses McKnight Sr. and Alma White McKnight. He received his formal education at Spring Hill Elementary School. At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined Laurel Hill AME Church.

Survivors include two sons, John McKnight of Miami, Fla., and Willie Lee McKnight of the home; three daughters, Inez (Wayne) Newman of Baltimore, Md., Alma Williams of Miami and Barbara McKnight of the home; two stepdaughters, Deloris (Alfred) Holliday of Baltimore, and Ruth (Dennis) Mulls of Buffalo, N.Y.; a stepsister, Dorothy (Shortie) Nelson of Miami; 24 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elease Pearson and Dorrthy Robinson; and a brother, Moses McKnight Jr.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Hill AME Church, M.W. Rickenbaker Rd., Davis Station community, Summerton, with the Rev. Ronnie Brown, pastor officiating.

Burial followed in Ivory Cemetery.

James W. Ridgill
James Willard Ridgill, 76, husband of Frances Huggins Ridgill, died Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born Dec. 24, 1926, in Manning, he was the son of the late Richard Leslie and Sheldonia Smoak Ridgill. First married to the late Iva Lawrimore Ridgill, he was retired from the maintenance department at Crescent Tool in Sumter. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lodge in Manning for 55 years, and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, James Richard “Ricky” Ridgill and wife, Mary Sue, of Sumter and Thomas W. “Tommy” Ridgill and wife, Melissa, of Florence; a daughter, Joyce R. Simon of Windsor, Va.; two brothers, David L. Ridgill of Manning and Joe Ridgill of Charleston; a sister, Julia Margaret Richburg of Manning; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.
