Robert ‘Bookie’ James Brogdon
Robert “Bookie” James Brogdon, 49, husband of Shirley Rich Brogdon, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born Dec. 1, 1953, in Turbeville, he was the son of Ozella Burgess and the late California McFadden. He was adopted and reared by Oree Willard Brogdon and the late evangelist Fannie Brogdon. He received his formal education at St. John Elementary School in Lynchburg and was a graduate of Mayewood High School Class of 1971. He also graduated from the Florence-Darlington Technical College truck-driving program. He joined Oak Grove AME Church at an early age.

Survivors besides his wife and parents are six sons, Tyrone Rich, Freddrick Rich, Levi Rich, Antwane Brogdon, Desmond Brown of the home and Reginald McElveen of Sumter; three daughters, Jennifer Rich of the home, Shontae Brown and Abigail Brown of Charlotte, N.C.; five brothers, John Capers and wife, Martha, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sean Brogdon and Jamie Brogdon of Florence, Corey Cooper of Olanta and Tyrone Brogdon of Atlanta; four sisters, Barbara Simmons and Jackie Brand of Olanta, Helen Burgess of Patterson, N.J., and Dorothy Robert of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

A son, Robert Danille Brogdon, preceded him in death.

Services were held at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Oliver Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Wyman McFadden.

Burial followed at St. Mart AME Church cemetery in Olanta.

Pallbearers were the men of the church and friends of the family.

Floral bearers were the ladies of the church and friends of the family.

Luke ‘Buster’ Blackwell Jr.
Luke “Buster” Blackwell Jr., 84, of Manning, husband of Dolcena Robinson Blackwell, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 23, 1918, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Luke Blackwell Sr. and Rita Johnson Blackwell. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, where he served on the trustee board and senior choir. He was a retired employee of the South Carolina Highway and Transportation Department.

Survivors including his wife of Manning are three sons, Robert Blackwell and wife, Joyce, of Manning, David Blackwell of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Dewey Blackwell and wife, Willa, of Richmond, Va.; five daughters, Odessie Blackwell and Deloris Blackwell of Brooklyn, Edith Knox and husband, Spurgen, of Newark, Del., Dianne Pompey and husband, Burnett, of Manning, and Cynthia Stukes and husband, Robert, of Columbia; his caregiver, Annette “Susie” Conyers of Manning; two grandchildren he reared as his own, Elizabeth Blackwell and Trayon Blackwell-Lee of Brooklyn; two sisters-in-law, Maime Blackwell and Fozer Nelson of Manning; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hattie Moore and Gracie Nelson; four brothers, Ollie Johnson, Rhode Blackwell, Claude Blackwell and Oner Blackwell; and a grandson, Michael Blackwell.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Dr. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Eddie Lesane, Herbert Bailey, Eugene Thomas and Pastor Thomas Nelson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were the men of Elizabeth Baptist Church and friends of the family.

Audrey B. Keels
Audrey Buskie Keels, 80, widow of Herbert Keels, died Saturday, February 23, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 11, 1922, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Buskie and Peggie Houston Buskie. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Trinity AME Church, where she served in Sunday school, the missionary society, president of Stewardess Board No. 3 and a member of the steward board. She was also a member of the Manning branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for 35 years.

Survivors include a son, James Keels of Manning; five daughters, Audrey Briscoe and her husband, Rapheal, Joyce Cooper and her husband Kenneth of Fort Washington, Md., Janice Keels of Manning, Barbara Smith and her husband Ronald of Hampton, Va., and Laverne Taylor of Columbia, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity AME Church with the Revs. J. A. Frederick and O’Donald Dingle officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Suzanne Scott
Brooklyn, N.Y. - Suzanne Scott, 75, died February 19, 2003, at NY Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Born July 30, 1927, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late David Scott and Rena Mae Evans Scott and stepdaughter of the late Elease Brown. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She worked in the manufacturing industries for many years and later as a home health aide. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church in Baltimore, Md., the Bible Faith Deliverance Church, serving as usher in Brooklyn, and later, the Healing From Heaven Church in Brooklyn.

Survivors include a son, Robert Brandon of Brooklyn; two sisters, Jeanette S. Sweat of Manning and Ruth Bailey of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lee Ernest, Robert and David Scott; a sister, Mollie Driffin; and two sons, James Washington Jr. and Leon Brandon.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg officiating.

Burial followed in Muldrow Cemetery, Manning.

Mary D. Logan
Sumter - Mary “Plum” Dow Logan died February 25, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare System, Sumter.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Millie Hampton. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined Antioch AME Church and later she joined Antioch RMUE Church and New Hope UME Church in Pinewood. She was twice married, first to the late Oakley Dow and to the late Madison Logan.

Survivors include a son, Leon Dow and wife, Christine, of Philadelphia, Pa.; a foster daughter, Bessie Hall of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Richard Hampton of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Annie Briggs of Summerton, Ethel Parker of Pinewood and Millie Canty of Philadelphia; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Sampson Dow; three brothers, Roosevelt Hampton, Preston Hampton and Adam Hampton Jr.; and one sister, Emma T. McKnight.

Services were held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating.

Burial followed in the New Hope Cemetery, Pinewood.

James P. Kirven
James Peter “Jim” Kirven, 56, died Thursday, February 27, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Oct. 12, 1946, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Cecil Charles and Hazel Cochran Kirven. He attended Manning Public Schools, and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church. He was a volunteer at the Clarendon County Courthouse, the Red Cross, and the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Department.

Survivors include two sisters, Ceceile Bryan of Tar Heel, N.C., and Leona Davis of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Charles Kirven of Houston, Texas; four nieces; one nephew; nine great-nieces; and five great-nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Paul Sullivan and the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce Street, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Robin James Jr.
Pinewood - Robin “Bernie” James Jr., 85, husband of Martha Wilder James, died February 26, 2003, at 214 James St., Pinewood.

Born Feb. 28, 1917, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Robin James Sr. and Ella McConico James. He was a lifelong member of Antioch UME Church where he served on the trustee board and was a class leader. He retired from Kirven Lumber Co. after 40 years of service.

Survivors besides his wife include a foster son, Willie Lee (Kim) Singleton of Stateburg; a stepson, James Wilder of Queens, N.Y.; a daughter, Joyce Singleton of Pinewood; three stepdaughters, Gracie (Adren) Williams of Sumter, Jeanette (Ezekiel) Burns of Sumter, and Carolyn Pearson of Sumter; a foster daughter, Annie Ruth Sparks of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Carraway of Pinewood and Ethel Heyward of Sumter; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; 10 step-grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Washington James, Rufus James and William James; three sisters, Alethea Benjamin, Sara McConico and Camilla McCoy; and a step-grandchild, Ranelle Burns.

Services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Antioch UME Church, Rimini, with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Kavin Culick
Lake City - Kavin Culick, 29, of Lake City died on February 28, 2003, at a Lake City hospital after an illness.

Born in Florence County, he was the son of H.L. (Dankey) Culick and Virginia Byrd Culick. He attended Clarendon County Disabilities and Special Needs Board - Day Program and Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors besides his parents of Lake City include two sisters, Shannon (Chuck) Shady and Meninea Culick of Lake City; two brothers, Joey (Sue) Culick of Cades and Danny Culick of Lake City; paternal grandparents, Albert and Nina Culick of Lake City; and maternal step-grandfather, J.P. Coker of Lake City.

He was preceded in death by a niece, Laci Shady; a sister, Wendy Marie Culick; maternal grandmother, Evelyn Hanniford Coker; and maternal grandfather, Alex Byrd.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta.

Virginia W. Haley
Virginia Watson Haley, 58, wife of Lester L. Haley Sr., died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 27, 1943, in LaGrange, Ga., she was the daughter of the late William Elice Watson and Effie Watson Lester. She was a member of Clarendon Church of God.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, Lester L. Haley Jr. of Manning; a daughter, Debbie H. Cutter of Manning; two brothers, Jerry Watson and Larry Watson of Alabama; four sisters, Judy Scott, Brenda Rogers and Darlene Borden of LaGrange, Ga. and Shirley Watson of Alabama; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Paul Haley.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday in Clarendon Church of God with the Rev. Ernest Sessions officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Church of God in Manning or the American Lung Association.
