Ralston E. Smith
Ralston Eugene Smith, 38, of Turbeville, died March 7, 2003.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of Mrs. Eleanor Green Smith and the late Charlie Dorn Smith Jr. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, a farmer and owner of Burnt Branch Farms, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Citizens Bank and was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his mother of Turbeville include a wife, Stacey Michelle Green Smith of Turbeville; a daughter, Anna Creighton Smith of Turbeville; a sister, Dixie Eleanor Bullock of Columbia; three brothers, Dr. Charlie Dorn Smith III of Columbia, Andrew Bethea Smith of Turbeville and Dr. Sidney Green Smith of Winston Salem, N.C.; and four nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Burial followed in the Thomas Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 144, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Robert L. Pryor
Robert LaCoste Pryor, 72, husband of Patricia Shealy Pryor, died Monday, March 3, 2003, in Manning.

Born Sept. 7, 1930, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was the son of the late Raymond H. and Polly Thomas Pryor. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, a U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. and veteran of the Korean War. He was of the Presbyterian faith and was a retired data processor for PYA Monarch.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a son, Greg Pryor of Walterboro; a daughter, Michelle Feeley of Sumter; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service with military honors was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Florence National Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating.

Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 554 Pinewood Road, Sumter, S.C. 29154.

E. Paul Mixon
Ernest Paul Mixon, 23, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born June 21, 1979, in Sumter, he was the son of Ernest Perry Mixon and Winnie Floyd Gamble. He was employed by Turbeville Correctional Institute in Turbeville and was a member of Great Commission Ministries in Turbeville.

Survivors besides his father of Manning and mother of Greeleyville include his stepmother, Joan Davis Mixon of Manning; stepfather, Guy Gamble of Greeleyville; a sister, Ann Zeiler Bautel and her husband, Kim, of Marble, N.C.; a stepsister, Crystal Gamble of Greeleyville; a stepbrother, Bryan Gamble of Manning; maternal grandparents, Paul and Runetie Tanner Floyd of Manning; paternal grandmother, Mary Mixon Hopkins of Alcolu; and special friends, Stacy Evans of New Zion and Chip Miller of Manning.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Derrick Fort and Morris Smith officiated.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Pallbearers were the Turbeville Correctional Officers.

Memorials may be made to Great Commission Ministries, 3503 W. Turbeville Hwy., Lake City, SC 29560.

Joanne E. Gould
Joanne Emerson Gould, 71, wife of Clyde William Gould, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Jan. 27, 1932, in Ayer, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Emaline Fairbanks Emerson. She was a retired secretary for the Civil Service, and was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include her husband of Manning; and a son, Robert Cleary Jr., of Manning.

Private services were to be held at a later date in Pepperell, Mass.

Thelma G. DuBose
Thelma Gamble DuBose, 81, widow of Marion Epps “Junior” DuBose Jr., died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 31, 1922, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late James Edward Gamble Jr. and Maude Weatherford Gamble. She was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mora DuBose Vernon and husband, Rev. Douglas Vernon, of Greenville; a brother, James F. “Pie” Gamble Jr. of Manning; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Thompson and twin sister, Mrs. Wilma Odom, of Manning; five grandchildren, Matt Vernon, Ashley Vernon and Davidson Vernon, Marion Epps DuBose IV, and wife, Ashley Jones DuBose and Michael Cothran.

She was preceded in death by a son, M.E. DuBose III.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in New Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Charlie Tyler and Lee Davis officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2833 Alex Harvin Hwy., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Jenerette L. Dickey
Reading, Pa. - Jenerette Levant “Jin” Dickey, 53, husband of Betty L. Burgess Dickey, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at St. Josephs Hospital, Reading, Pa.

Born Feb. 14, 1950, in New Zion, he was the son of Josephine Baker Dickey McCray and the late Hazel Dickey and stepson of the late Willie “Son” McCray. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, and graduated from Walker-Gamble High School Class of 1969. He joined St. John AME Church in his youth. He taught adult Sunday school class. He was a member of Jordan Chapel Masonic Lodge 338. He was employed as a lumber inspector with Georgia-Pacific in Alcolu and a supervisor at Georgia-Pacific in Murphyburg, N.C. In 1977, he moved to Reading and was employed as a welder for Flagg Brothers, retiring in 1979.

Survivors besides his wife of the home and mother of Manning include two stepsons, Arthur J. Watkins and Samuels E. Watkins of Reading; two stepdaughters, Janice A. Burgess and Pamela E. Watkins of Reading; a brother, Waldo (Thelma) Dickey of Reading; four sisters, Evelyn (Joseph) Witherspoon of Gable, Luethonia D. Harper of Bridgeport, Conn., Oretta D. (Joe) Durant of Reading and Violivette D. (David) Knight of Sumter; five stepbrothers, the Rev. Jerome McCray of Manning, Lee Ernest (Johnnie Mae) McCray of Kingstree, Willard McCray and John McCray of New Zion and William (Audrey) McCray of Baltimore; two stepsisters, Cecilla McCray of Manning and Willie Jean (Jervie) Singleton of New York City; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dovell and Hazel E. Dickey.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John AME Church, Workman community of Kingstree, with the Rev. B.L. Greene, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Jerome McCray, Ricky Simmons, Isaiah J. Myers and Dr. Cokley Richburg.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Floral bearers were the Jordan Chapel Chapter Order of Eastern Star No. 237.

Pallbearers were the Jordan Chapel Masonic Lodge No. 338.

J.E. Chandler Sr.
Laurens - James Ervin Chandler Sr., 90, of 112 Pinehaven St., husband of Fannie Koon Chandler, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late Albert Reese and Louise Kennedy Chandler. He was married to his loving wife Fannie for 60 years. He moved to Laurens with Belk Department Store in 1948. In 1953 he established Chandler’s Clothing Store on the Public Square, where he owned and operated the store for 40 years. He was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church where he served on many committees and also was active in community affairs.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include one son and daughter-in-law, James E. Jr. (Jimmy) and Cindy W. Chandler; one granddaughter and husband, Keri C. and Van Tumblin; and one grandson, Walter J. Chandler and girlfriend, Merry Green, of Laurens; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Special appreciation to Rose White for her constant and loving help and to Penny Coleman for her dedicated care.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Atonement Lutheran Church with the Revs. James Fox and Henry Rogers officiating.

Leon G. Hanisch
Mayesville - Leon G. Hanisch, 81, husband of Lucille B. Hanisch, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in LaGrange, Texas, he was the son of the late Emil Hanisch and Laura Schuette Hanisch. He was a member of Mayesville Presbyterian Church and a retired U.S. Air Force major with 22 years of service. He was a WWII veteran and served in the European Theatre. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 8 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart and the Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars.

Survivors besides his wife of Mayesville include a son, David L. Hanisch and his wife, Maggie of Sumter; two daughters, Sharon Hanisch of Columbia and Linda Ingram of Sumter; a sister, Gladys Avilia of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Ginger Wilfong and her husband Jeff of Raleigh, N.C., Leslie C. Ingram Jr. and his wife Diane of Turbeville, Stacy Hanisch and David Hanisch Jr. of Sumter; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Wilfong, Clarie Wilfong and C.J. Ingram; and two step-great-grandchildren, Travis and Chris Billings.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Hanisch, Alfred Hanisch and Harry Hanisch; and a sister, Mary Miles.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mayesville Blackriver Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. McNab Morrison and Brian Peake officiating

Joe N. Henry
Joe Nathan Henry, 68, husband of Susie “Mamie” Anderson Henry, died Thursday, February 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 10, 1933, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Gilbert H. Henry and Willie Neal Henry. He was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. In his youth, he was a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and served in the Korean War.

He was honorably discharged in 1957. He was employed by Walker Tire and Recapping in Manning for more than 41 years. He was a member of the NAACP.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Joey Henry of Summerton and Kenneth Cunningham of Waldorf, Md.; two daughters, Karen Henry and Terry Ragin of Columbia; two brothers, Robert Henry and Eddie Lee Henry of Summerton; three sisters, Ethel Jones of Summerton, Betty Simmons of Chicago, Ill. and Phyllis Bardliving of Calumet City, Ill.; two grandchildren he raised as his own, Tasha Henry and Tony Henry of the home; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a child.

Services were 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Dr. James L. Tindal officiating along with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, the Rev. J.L. McCloud, the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott and the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd assisting.

Burial followed in St. Matthews AME Church cemetery.
