James P. Frazier Sr.
James Presley Frazier Sr., 63, husband of Mary Deloris Shine Frazier, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at his residence.

Born Feb. 22, 1939, in the Sugar Hill section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Johnny Ragin and Ethel Frazier White and the stepson of the late Levi White.

He was educated at Manning Training School and attended Providence AME Church. He relocated to Baldwin, N. Y., where he was a member of Second Baptist Church and later returned home and joined Words of Victory Outreach Ministry. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He was retired from the N.Y. Telephone Company.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Bernard (Sarah) Frazier of Hempstead, N.Y., Brian A. (Nita) Frazier of Freeport, N.Y., and James Frazier Jr. of Columbia; a daughter, Charlene Frazier of Manning; two brothers, Albertus (Naomi) Frazier of Manning and Henry Ragin of Hollywood, Fla.; eight sisters, Annabelle Epps, Isabelle Miller, Joann Jones, Odessa Scott and Dorothy Belton of Manning, Lillie B. (Freddie) Henley of St. Augustine, Fla., Josephine Owen of Baltimore, Md. and Addie Mae Walker of Plant City, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Michael Abraham officiating, assisted by Prophet G.R. Mitchell and the Revs. T. Smith, O.D. Dingle and W. Conyers.

Burial followed in Frazier Cemetery.

Laura G. McLeod
Laura Janette Griffin McLeod, 76, widow of S.O. McLeod, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 12, 1925, in Pinewood, she was the daughter of the late Charles Laurence Griffin Sr. and the late Naomi Geddings Griffin. She was former owner of S.O. McLeod Grocery, a graduate of Pinewood High School and was a member of Paxville Baptist Church where she taught GA’s and Sunday school and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.

Survivors include two sons, Laurence Wade McLeod and wife Libby and Simeon O’Donnell “Don” McLeod Jr. of Paxville; a daughter, Lois Janette McLeod Brown and husband Donnie of Paxville; a brother, Graham Griffin of Pinewood; two sisters, Ruth Griffin Aycock of Sumter and Naomi Griffin McCutcheon of Bishopville; seven grandchildren, Andrew McLeod, Susan Nesbitt, Joseph McLeod, Neal Brown, Lorin Brown, Laura Hinman and Wade Brown; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; and two brothers, C.L. Griffin Jr. and Rhinehart Griffin.

Services were 4 p.m. Wednesday at Paxville Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.
Burial followed in Paxville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert McCarthy, Steve Morris, Charles Griffin III, Gregg McCutcheon III, Billy Simon and Cecil Scott. Honorary pallbearers were the staff of the Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Memorials may be made to Paxville Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 5005, Paxville, S.C. 29102.

Dr. James E. Bell
Santee - Dr. James Edward Bell Jr., 80, husband of Jean Martin Bell, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 27, 2002, in McCormick, he was the son of the late James Edward Bell and the late Ferol Acker Bell. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina; served an internship and residency at Roper Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina in Obstetrics and Gynecology and was a physician in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Sumter since 1953 with Sumter OB-GYN (formerly The Woman’s Clinic, P.A.). He was a member of Santee Presbyterian Church and was a former longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Sumter, where he served on the Diaconate. Dr. Bell was past president of the Rotary Club of Sumter, an honorary member of Rotary Club of Lake Marion, recipient of the Order of the Palmetto in 2002, diplomat of the American Board of OB-GYN since 1956, named South Carolina’s first volunteer Physician of the Year, volunteer and contractual physician in the local family planning clinics since 1961, member of the American Medical Association, South Atlantic OB-GYN Society, Sumter-Clarendon-Lee Medical Society, South Carolina Medical Association, past president of the South Carolina OB-GYN Society, past president of the South Carolina Central Association of OB-GYN, member of the THEGOS Society, Southern Medical Association, South Central OB-GYN Society, was co-founder of The Rib Open Golf Tournament, board member of Bank of America, member of the board of directors of Carolinas Health Hospitals in North and South Carolina, Master Mason, member of the Shrine and Royal Order of Jesters, founding chairman of the Utilization Review Committee of Tuomey Regional Medical Center and former Chief of Staff of Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Survivors besides his wife of Santee include two sons, James Edward Bell III and his wife Dawn of Sumter and Georgetown and Frederick McDonald Bell and his wife Cynthia of Sumter; two daughters, Katharine Bell Ratterree of Spartanburg and Anne Middleton Bell of Sumter; a stepson, Jack Ryan Martin Jr. and his wife Meg of Summerton; a stepdaughter, Jeanne Martin Gasque and her husband John of Holly Hill; 11 grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.

Private burial services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery in Summerton with the Rev. John Doubles officiating.

Pallbearers were the grandsons, Charles Edward Ratterree, Benjamin Everett Ratterree, Kyle Thomas McManamy, Willian Orin Ratterree, James Michael Bell and John Martin Gasque.

Memorial services were 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church in Sumter with the Dr. Ed McLeod, the Rev. Dean Piper and the Rev. John Doubles officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to the Medical University of South Carolina Fund for Scleroderma Research, ATTN: Dr. Richard Silver or the Summerton Evergreen Cemetery Fund.

Ella N. Brand
Ella Ree Nelson Brand, 72, widow of Albert Brand, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born May 6, 1929, in Elloree, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Nelson and Marie Willis Nelson. She was educated at Melina Parochial School in Gable and joined Melina Presbyterian Church at an early age. She was employed by Plowden and Windham families for 50 years.

Survivors include a son, James Louis Nelson of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Shannon Morris and her husband Ricky, Wanda, Jennifer, Christy and Thomas Nelson of Jacksonville; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Lee and Margaret McFadden of Jacksonville; and her caregivers, Cecil Windham and family of Manning.

Services were Thursday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jerome McCray officiating.

Burial followed in Melina Presbyterian Church USA Cemetery in Gable.

Howard J. Emerson
Howard John Emerson, 84, beloved husband of 62 years to Margery Perkins Emerson, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 12, 1918, in Hornell, N.Y., he was the son of the late John T. Emerson and Elizabeth O’Neil Emerson. He was a 1936 graduate of Hornell High School. He was a volunteer fireman in Canisteo, N.Y., a Boy Scout and Eagle leader, a member of the Moose Lodge in Hornell, N.Y., a volunteer at the blood bank and the Clarendon County Striped Bass Festival and an avid golfer and gardener. He retired from Erie Lackawana Railroad after 42 years.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Theresa Terrell and Janet Goodwin of Manning; a sister, Mildred McGinnes of Shortsville, N.Y.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Emerson.

Private services were Thursday afternoon.

Burial took place in Canisteo Hillside Cemetery in New York.

Jim E. Farmer
Jim Ed Farmer, 74, husband of Evelina Peterson Farmer, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Mariner Health.

Born April 23, 1928, in the Home Branch section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Jim Farmer and Carrie Major Farmer. He attended Paxville Elementary School, graduated from Lincoln High Adult Education in 1968 and attended Sumter Area Technical College. He was a member of Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as church pianist, on the gospel choir, senior choir, deacon board and was president of the Black River Sunday School Convention for Clarendon County Church School. He retired from Georgia-Pacific in 1980. He was past secretary of AFL-CIO, secretary for many years of the Corinthian Lodge FAAYM No. 200, secretary of the Free and Accepted Ancient York Masons Prince Hall Origin, a member of Worthy Patrons of Martha Chapter No. 12 Eastern Star Chapter and a member of Sumter Chapter National Federation of the Blind.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Jimmy B. Farmer of Sumter; four daughters, Esther Farmer-Judon of Sumter, Dr. Harriett Farmer Kargbo of Cheverly, Md., Evetta Farmer Gregg of Columbia and Kastine Donnett Farmer of Salisbury, Md.; two brothers, Loman David Farmer of Paxville and Abraham Pinkney Farmer of Sumter; three sisters, Ida F. Harvin and her husband Thomas of Paxville, Blanche F. Smith and Rosa F. Brown of Columbia; and two grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. at Mt. Zero Baptist Church. The Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, officiated and was assisted by The Rev. Cokley Richburg and the Rev. Wesley Crawford.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The Masonic Lodge No. 200 served as pallbearers with deacons of Mt. Zero Baptist Church serving as honorary pallbearers.

Deaconesses served as the flower bearers.

Wallace O. Hilton Jr.
Wallace Omsby “Wally” Hilton Jr., 57, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at his home in Manning.

Born July 1, 1944, in Kingstree, he was the son of the late Wallace Omsby Hilton and Mallie Gibbons Hilton. He attended the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu and an insurance agent.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Wallace Johnson and her husband Terry of Augusta, Ga.; a nephew, Terrell Johnson of Atlanta, Ga.; a niece, Caroline Johnson Champion and her husband Ernest Maxwell Champion IV of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and a great-nephew, Ernest Maxwell Champion V.

Services were 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Manning Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Helvey officiating.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, P.O. Box 307, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

Homer W. Hopkins
Bishopville - Homer W. Hopkins, 83, husband of Jessie Belle Barnes Hopkins, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at the Kershaw Medical Center.

Born in Lee County, he was the son of the late Willie James Hopkins and Mammie E. Sutton Hopkins. He was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a retired supervisor with Carolina Furniture Works. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville include a daughter, Dyane Layton and her husband Ronny of Manning; a sister, Willie Mae Gardner of Cayce; a brother, James E. Hopkins of Bishopville; four grandchildren, Michael Layton of Lynchburg, Tammy Rickenbaker and Joel Hopkins of Holly Hill and Chris Layton of Summerton; five great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Hopkins.

He was preceded in death by a son, Homer Ray Hopkins.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. B.R. Wallace officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Creek Baptist Church, 2980 Camden Highway, Bishopville, S.C. 29010.

Mother V. Johnson McBride
Mother Vashti Johnson McBride, 71, wife of Deacon Naham McBride Sr., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 7, 1931, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Isaiah Johnson and Lena Walters Johnson Burns. She attended Brady M. School. She committed herself to Christ at the young age of 17. She was a dedicated member of the Church of God by Faith, Inc. and for 54 years served as the following: church treasurer, W.W.C. president, vice president of the youth department, vice president of the missionary department, member of the usher board, mother’s board, gospel and senior choirs. She enjoyed studying and sharing the word of God. She co-orgnaized the first Vacation Bible School for the Sumter Church and was co-founder of the Church of God by Faith, Inc., Davis Station.

Survivors besides her husband of 56 years include four sons, Moses N. McBride and his wife Willene of Sumter, Isaiah McBride and his wife Lola of Hamden, Conn., Maj. Angelo A. McBride and his wife Lillian of Columbia and Naham McBride Jr. of Columbia; six daughters, Dorothy Alice McBride of Neptune, N.J., Gloria J. McBride Scriven of Sumter, Rose Marie Davis of Summerton, Faith Kemp and her husband Griffin of Columbia, Deloris Y. McBride of Columbia and Okema Livingston and her husband Elder Victor of Richmond, Va.; six brothers, John Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Larry Burns and his wife Jane of Petersburg, Va., Rufus Burns of Teaneck, N.J., Ezekial Burns and his wife Jeanette of Sumter, Rev. Emanuel Burns and his wife Helen of Yacama, Wash., and Lester Burns and his wife Amy of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Dorothy Ford of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ada Wright of Sumter; 23 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph Johnson, Willie Johnson and Earl Burns Sr.; and three grandchildren, Jason Jerard Scriven, Tyrese and Tylissa McBride.

Services were 1 p.m. Sunday at the Church of God by Faith, Inc. Interim Pastor Elder Thomas Gibbs officiated and was assisted by Elders James Lucas and Emanuel Burns.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.
