Glen H. Mitchum Sr.
Glen H. Mitchum Sr., 70, husband of Betty “Bootsie” Mitchum, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born August 22, 1931, in Bethera, S.C., he was the son of the late Enoch Lanier Mitchum Sr. and the late Lucille Litchfield Mitchum. He attended Macedonia public schools. He was of the Baptist faith. He was retired from General Telephone Company with 41 years of service. He was an avid hunter and president of the Carolina Hunting Club of Foreston. He was a U.S. Army Korean veteran.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, Glen H. Mitchum Jr. and his wife Dale and Robert Dean Mitchum and his wife Donna of Manning; a daughter, Sheila M. Holladay and her husband Bert of McCormick, S.C.; two sisters, Carolyn Wildes and her husband Chris of Andrews, S.C. and Kathryn Whitesel of Fredonia, N.Y.; a brother, Donald K. Mitchum of Bethera, S.C.; three granddaughters, Ashley Mitchum, Brooke Hilton and Tabitha Hilton; and two grandsons, Glen H. “Hane” Mitchum III and Brad Pelfrey.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, E.L., Maxie and Milton Mitchum.

Services were 4 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Bridges and the Rev. David Richardson officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Pearl B. Richburg
Pearl Baggett Richburg, 89, widow of Joe Edward Richburg, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at her home in Manning.

Born Dec. 2, 1912, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Calvin Hartwell Baggett and Julia Parker Baggett. She was a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Rush Robinson of Orangeburg and Irene Brewer and husband Bill of Manning; two sons, Harold Richburg and wife Nancy of Tupelo, Miss. and Bobby Richburg and wife Mackey of Lugoff; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Stacey Richburg; and a son-in-law, Rennie Robinson.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kenneth Upright and the Rev. Walt Phillips officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Hal Richburg, Chris Richburg, Marshall Robinson, Steven Robinson, Don Robinson, Mickey Brewer, Mike Richburg and Joe Richburg.

Memorials may be made to the Clarendon Pilot Club “Alzheimer’s Program,” P.O. Box 495, Manning, S.C. 29102 or Hospice Care of the Tri-County, 1236 B Wilson Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, 2761 Liberty Church Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Lillie B. Spigner
Lillie B. Spigner, 92, widow of the late Luther C. Spigner, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born July 29, 1909, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Robbie and Etta Brunson Barfield. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Ruby Sullivan of Turbeville, Lillian “Sis” Garneau of Manning, Patsy Coker of Denmark and Hope Anderson of Camden; five sons, Ed Spigner and Fred Spigner of Manning and Mac Spigner of Alcolu; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Luther Clyde Spigner Jr.; a grandson, Maxie Sullivan; and a son-in-law, Jimmy Sullivan.

Services were noon Tuesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Stephen Bowe and the Rev. Preston Grimsley officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Spigner, Ral Spigner, Robbie Spigner, David Spigner, Damian Garneau, Ray Coker, Brad Anderson and Marc Spigner. Honorary pallbearers were Randy Spigner, Freddie Spigner, Greg Spigner, Patrick Garneau, Todd Coker and Matthew Spigner.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Cora L. Barfield
Cora Lee Barfield, 66, wife of Curtis Barfield, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Furman Hickman and Della DuBose Hickman. She was retired from Campbell Soup Co.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include a son, Curtis Calvin Barfield of Sumter; five daughters, Evelyn Roquemore, Judy Battilana and Patty Lowery of Sumter, Lynn Evans of Alcolu and Eloise McKenzie of Kingstree; a brother, Melvin Hickman of Manning; a sister, Cari Mae Altmon of Lynchburg; an adopted brother Mitchell Martin of Coward; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday at Smithville Evangelical Baptist Church with the Revs. Freddie Gaymon and Mike Baynai officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Ruth M. Bartlette
Sumter - Ruth McLeod Bartlette, 85, widow of Joseph Thomas Bartlette, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at a local nursing center.

Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late James Wilson McLeod and the late Mary Anna Dawkins McLeod.

Mrs. Bartlette was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Bettie B. Jackson and her husband Herman D., Ginnie B. Davis and her husband Billy L. and Judy B. Fleming and her husband Roger of Sumter; six sisters, Thelma McLeod and Audrey Alford of Sumter, Gerry Timmons of Pinewood, Janet Trembley and Barbara Morris of Summerton and Kathleen Roberson of Moncks Corner; six grandchildren, Lynn J. Falls, Thommie Ruth Jackson, Rhonda Y. Jackson, Billy L. Davis Jr., David Fleming and Heather C. Fleming; and two great-grandchildren, Anna C. Fleming and Wyatt Fleming.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Wilson McLeod Jr. and Pete McLeod.

Services were 4 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Rob Pierce officiating.

Burial followed in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were the grandsons, Billy L. Davis Jr. and David Fleming; and nephews Gene Morris, Ken Alford, Gary Touchberry and Keith Hodge.

Memorials may be made to the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, S.C. 29648.

Rickie A. McBride
Rickie A. McBride, 24, of 396 Jehossee Drive, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Aiken Regional Medical Center.

Born June 7, 1978, in the St. Paul community of Clarendon County, he was a son of Rickie McBride and Rhonda Thames. He was a 1996 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He attended Allen University in Columbia and was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church, where he participated in youth activities.

Survivors besides his mother and father include maternal grandmother Katie Mae Dixon of Aiken; a brother, Franklin Thompson Jr. of Summerton; and five sisters, Shalonda, Shanique, Shanka and Keisha Thames and Keosha Thompson, of Summerton.

Services were 4 p.m. Saturday at Historic Liberty AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Malachi Duncan officiating, assisted by the Revs. Henry W. Mitchell, L. Edythe DeLaine and David Blanding. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Joella S. Robinson
Joella Snider Robinson of 216 Mount Royal Loop, 79, widow of Joe Lee Robinson Jr., died Monday, June 17, 2002, at her home.

Born July 9, 1922, in Georgetown County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Rosa Snider. She attended Georgetown County public schools and was a member of Lighthill Baptist Church, where she was mother of the church.

Survivors include three sons, Arthur Robinson and his wife, Stella, Rickie Robinson and his wide Catherine and Minister Harry Robinson and his wife, Pearliann, of Foreston; seven daughters, Nell King of the Bronx, N.Y., Estell Pompey and her husband, Fred, of Lancaster, Penn., Vernell Pompey and her husband, Louis, Bettie Hilton and her husband, Louis, and Jackqulynn and her husband, Emanuel, of Foreston, Francenia Woods and her husband, Sammie, of Greeleyville and Viree Abraham of Florence; two brothers, the Rev. Fred Snider and his wife, Cynthia, and Henry Snider, of Foreston; six sisters, Mary Williams and her husband, Nathanie, of Miami, Fla., Marie Bowman of Bronx, Tonasue Hicks and her husband, Daniel, of East Stroudsburg, Penn., Martha Conyers and her husband, Frank, Hazel Williams and Ora Lee Hilton of Foreston; 25 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Bradshaw and Beatrice Weekfall.

Services were 11 a.m. at Lighthill Baptist Church in Foreston with the Rev. Curtis Dingle officiating. Burial followed in the Junky Yard Cemetery in Foreston.

Officers with the Santee Police Department were pallbearers.

Thomas E. Carroll
Thomas Edward “Swampy” Carroll Jr., 67, died Friday, June 21, 2002, in Sumter.

Born April 12, 1935, in Manning, he was the son of the late Thomas Edward Carroll Sr. and the late Martha Bryant Carroll. He was a former night security guard for Stuckey Lumber Company and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sisters, Daisy C. Branham of Manning and Corinne Bell of Sumter; and a brother, Don Carroll of Sumter.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning.
Burial followed in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ruth M. Bennett
Ruth M. Bennett, 63, widow of Clamisee Bennett, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Nov. 15, 1938, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Jake McDonald and Josephine Starks McDonald. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Briggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a choir member and missionary.

Survivors include two sons, Jake A. Bennett and his wife, Alfreda, and Christopher Bennett and his wife, Ethel, of Summerton; four daughters, Mildred R. Bennett of Miami, Barnett Bennett of Fort Washington, Md., Valerie Bennett of Summerton and Sabrena Bennett of the home; two brothers, Joe McDonald and his wife Evelyn, of Opa Locka, Fla., and L.J. McDonald of Belle Galde, Fla.; three sisters, Rosa Hardy and her husband, Rudolph, of Opa Locka, Mattie Lawson and her husband, James, and Mableen McDonald, all of Summerton; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Bennett. Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Briggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Davis Cross Road community, Summerton, with the Rev. Bobby McDonald officiating. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.
