Hattie D. Walters
Hattie Mae Dow Walters of Davis Station, 73, widow of James E. Walters, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born May 2, 1929, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Elliot “Boy” Dow and Plummie Gibson Dow. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a lifelong member of Laurel Hill AME Church, where she was a former member of the gospel choir.

Survivors include two sons, J.W. Walters and his wife Dorothy of Miami, Fla., and James E. Walters of Summerton; two daughters, Videll McFadden and her husband Eddie Lee of Summerton and Julie Jadot and her husband Marcel of Miami; two stepsons, Gregory Walters and his wife Janet L. and Allen Coard of Manning; six brothers, Elliott Dow, Willie Dow, Everett Dow, Alphonzo Dow, Milton Dow and Ulysees Dow of Manning; a sister, Mary Emma Parker of Manning; a stepsister, Robertha Dow of Summerton; a companion, Bookertee Belser of the home; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Hill AME Church with the Rev. Ronnie Brown officiating, assisted by Evangelist Sarah Miller.

Burial followed in Ivory Cemetery in Davis Station.

Emma H. Spry
Emma Lee Hankins Spry, 74, widow of Freddie Lee Spry, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 8, 1927, in the Paxville community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Harold Carrie Lee Conyers Hankins and the stepdaughter of the late Timothy Richburg.

She was educated in Clarendon County public schools in Paxville. In her youth, she attended Zion Hill Baptist Church in Paxville. She was employed with Aramark Food Services in Philadelphia until she retired.

Survivors include a daughter, Carlo Peterson of Summerton; a brother, Alton Hankins of Philadelphia; three sisters, Ruth Ann Collins of Baltimore, and Beulah Cole and Cassie Hill of Manning; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Annie P. Riley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Malachi Duncan.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Earnest McFadden
Olanta - Earnest “Tutor” McFadden, 77, husband of Daisy Graham McFadden, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 1, 1925, in Turbeville, he was the son of the late William McFadden and Betty Kennedy. He was a farmer, construction worker and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, Ernest McFadden and his wife Iris of Lake City, Isiah McFadden and his wife Karen Hall of Columbia and Michael McFadden of Olanta; four daughters, Daisy Gabourel and her husband Anthony of Los Angeles, Dinah McFadden of Columbia, Marlene Wilson and her husband Gregory of Queens, N.Y. and Ivdell McFadden of Olanta; two sisters, Lou Ester Graham of Philadelphia and Anese Thomas and her husband John of Olanta; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Allen McFadden; and a daughter, Felicia Joan Gathers Moore.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark Believers Holiness Church, Lincoln Ave., Lake City, with Elder Linwood Cooper officiating.

Burial followed in Old McFadden Cemetery in Lake City.

Myrtle Coker
West Columbia - Myrtle Vassar Coker, 88, widow of T. Rembert Coker, died Saturday, June 15, 2002.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Curtis L. and Nolie Powell Vassar. Formerly of Manning, she was a resident of West Columbia since 1960. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church where she taught kindergarten and Sunday school. She worked with music programs in various churches throughout her life.

Survivors include three daughters, JoAnn Frierson and her husband Bob of West Columbia, Jean Coker of West Columbia and Myra Blackwell and her husband Phil of Marietta; a son, Thomas R. Coker Jr. and his wife Brenda of Houston; a brother, Eli Vassar of Manning; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Murray, C.L. and Ike Vassar.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday in Northside Baptist Church with the Revs. Lonnie Shull and Steve Vassar officiating.

Burial followed in Woodridge Memorial Park.

Mildred S. Brandenburg
St. Matthews - Mildred S. Brandenburg, 89, widow of James R. Brandenburg Jr., died Monday, June 10, 2002, at the Methodist Oaks.

Born Dec. 12, 1912, in Davis Station, she was the daughter of the late Evander Gray Stukes and the late Placidia Shorter Stukes. She was a graduate of Manning High School and Winthrop College. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in public high schools and Lander College and was a member of St. Matthews Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a sister, Jacquelyn M. McNeil of Columbia; six nephews, Bobby Stukes, Marion Stukes, Robert Stukes, E.G. Stukes, Tim Stukes and Mickey Plowden; and three nieces, Thomasine Martin, Margaret Blascak and Olivia Rose.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas E. Stukes Sr. and Robert J. Stukes Sr.; two sisters, Edith Plowden and Maxine Edwards; and a stepmother, Mary Richburg Stukes.

Services were 10 a.m. Thursday in Amos Memorial Chapel, Sheffield Building of the Methodist Oaks with the Rev. Craig Pipkin and the Rev. Kenneth Shrawder officiating.

Burial followed in St. Paul’s Methodist Church Cemetery in St. Matthews.

Pallbearers included Bobby Stukes, Marion Stukes, E.G. Stukes, Tim Stukes, Marnie Moore and Mickey Plowden.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthews Presbyterian Church or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Davis Station.

William H. Powell Jr.
William Harold Powell Jr., 79, husband of Esther Boyce Powell, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at a local nursing facility.

Born in Orangeburg, he was the son of the late William Harold Powell Sr. and the late Bertha Inabinet Powell.

He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and was retired from Sumter Machinery Co. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Pam Powell Croft of Alcolu and Dixie Powell DeLoach of Columbia; a brother, Robert Gene Powell of Sumter; a sister, Grace Powell Ledford of Chatsworth, Ga.; five grandchildren, James Harold Price, Beth Price, Cathy Price, Lori Jacobs and Kelly Jacobs; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Price and Nathaniel Kennedy.

Services were 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Kenneth Thompkins and Tommy Comer officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Bill Boyce, Bob Boyce, Bryant Boyce, David Boyce, Tobin Ward and Will Gore.

Honorary pallbearers included members of the Brotherhood Sunday School Class of Alice Drive Baptist Church and Dr. Lea B. Givens.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, P.O. Box 02-5163, Miami, Fla., 33102-5163 or to the Alice Drive Baptist Church Building Fund, 1305 Loring Mill Rd., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Flora P. Redden
Flora Fulton Pendergrass Redden, 98, widow of Levy Pendergrass and John Peter Redden, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at her daughter’s home.

Born Dec. 3, 1903, in the Mouzon section of Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Primus Fulton and Donna Epps Fulton.

She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She joined St. Marys AME Church and later joined Beulah AME Church, where she served on the missionary society, stewardess board and senior choir. She was a Sunday school teacher and “mother of church.” She operated the school lunch program in Williamsburg County.

Survivors include a son, David L. Pendergrass and his wife, Gloria, of Columbus, Ohio; four stepsons, Morris Redden and his wife, Mary, of Cades, Charlie Redden and his wife, Sarah, of Columbia, Stanley Redden and his wife, Mary, and Frank Redden and his wife, Dorothy, of Philadelphia; three daughters, Alma Mouzon of New Zion, Willie Ruth and her husband, Thereyran, of Sumter, Pastor Dorothy Adams of Charlotte, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Ophelia R. Hyman of Olanta; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Marion Slade; two stepsons, Davis and Thomas Redden; five brothers; and one sister.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Isaac Priest officiating, assisted by the Revs. B.L. Green, Owens, Larry C. Weston and Pastor Dorothy Adams.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

James Richardson
Deacon James Richardson of 9 S. Boundary St., 54, husband of Cynthia “Ollie” McFadden Richardson, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born Aug. 3, 1947, in the Home Branch section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Donna Holliday Richardson and the late Willie Marion Richardson Sr. He attended Manning Training High School and was a member of Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, president and treasurer of the adult choir, Sunday school teacher, trustee, church treasurer and member of the Helping Hands Club. He was a member of Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge No. 99, the New Light Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 254 and was a Cairo Shriner. He was a retired employee of Georgia-Pacific in Alcolu.

Survivors besides his wife of the home and mother of Manning include two sons, James Allen Richardson of Ogdenbury, N.Y., and Gerald Jerome Richardson of the home; four daughters, Sandra Conyers of Bridgeport, Conn., and Demetria Richardson, Tammy Tomlin and her husband, John, and Coretta Demery and her husband, Bernard, of Manning; a brother, Willie Marion Richardson Jr. and his wife, Hester, of Manning; a sister, Gloria “Bea” Johnson and her husband, Kevin of Manning; and five grandchildren, Tayon Spooney, John and Redosha Tomlin and Trimeshia and Valeria Richardson-Tomlin, of Manning.

Wake services were held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home with Masonic rites.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church with the Rev. G.K. Carter, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Z. Daiz and A. DuBose and Elder M. Clemans. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Active members of Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge No. 99 and honorary deacons were pallbearers.

The New Light Chapter Order of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 254 and honorary ladies of Fourth Crossroad Baptist church were flower bearers.
