CAMDEN — Florence A. Cooke, 94, widow of Sammie Cooke Sr., died December 3, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Nan and Wade Alexander. Surviving are son, Willie Cooke; daughters, Louise Danner, Dorothy Nelson, Ruth Cooke, Lottye Cooke; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers; two sisters; nieces, nephews, cousins; other family.

John Foster

CHESTER — Services with burial for John Henry Foster, 68, will be 1 p.m. (noon viewing) Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Blackstock. Viewing is 3-9 p.m. today, 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at King’s Funeral Home. Born in Fairfield County to Joe and Armanda Chambers Foster, he died December 2, 2004. Surviving: wife, Ruby Wyatt Foster; daughters, Mary Chisholm, Lucille Cook; 2 sisters; 2 grandchildren.

Wilma Hartsoe

GAFFNEY — A memorial service for Wilma Blankenship Hartsoe, 77, widow of Aaron Hartsoe Sr., 7 p.m. today: Fairview Baptist Church; funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday (visitation 7-9 p.m. Wednesday) at Philadelphia U.M. Church, Fort Mill. Born in Fort Mill to John and Mildred B. Blankenship, she died Dec. 5, 2004. Surviving: children, John, Aaron Jr. Hartsoe, Linda Honeycutt; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Harold Dean

WALTERBORO — Mr. Harold Wallace Dean, former Mayor of Walterboro, owner of Dean’s Building Supply, and the husband of Sarah Anne Snead Dean, died Sunday at Roper Hospital in Charleston. He was 80.

Mr. Dean was born October 17, 1924, in Ridgeland, SC, a son of the late George Gibson Dean and Mollie Langford Dean. He attended public schools in Ridgeland and Orangeburg, and graduated from Walterboro High School in June of 1941. He attended Furman University. Mr. Dean later served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War.

Mr. Dean joined Farmers and Merchants Bank in February 1942, and through dedicated service eventually achieved the position of Executive Vice President and Cashier. He retired from Citizens and Southern National Bank as Senior Vice-President in 1989. Mr. Dean purchased Godwin Building Supply in November of 1989, which became Dean Building Supply in 1991, a business he operated with his sons until the time of his death.

Mr. Dean served on the Walterboro City Council from May of 1954 to February of 1967. In 1967, he became Mayor of the town, a position he held for 10 years. He was president of the Municipal Association of South Carolina in 1975-76. He was a former president of the Walterboro Jaycees and the Dogwood Hills Country Club. Mr. Dean was a member of the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Rotary Club of Walterboro. He was also a trustee on the board of the Colleton County Memorial Library.

Mr. Dean was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro where he had sung in the choir since 1943. He also served on the Board of Trustees, the Mission Board on Education, the Administrative Board where he served as Chairman and Secretary, the Finance Committee, and the Pastor/Parrish/Staff Relations Committee of which he was Chairman.

Surviving besides his wife are three children: Harold Wallace “Hal” Dean Jr., and wife Jennifer Guilford Dean, John Scott Dean, and wife Tamara Dennis Dean, and Mary Kate Dean Saunders, and husband Jeffery Lee Saunders, all of Walterboro. There are 3 grandchildren: Sloman Dale Dean, Madeline Claire Saunders, and Elizabeth Anne Dean. There is one sister, Eugenia Dean Platte, and her husband Legare, of Edgewater, FL, and one brother G. Gibson Dean, and wife Ann, of Buford, GA. There are a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 in the Bethel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lee Cothran and Rev. Nelson Stokes officiating. Burial will follow in the Live Oak Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund, 355 Hampton Street, Walterboro, SC 29488. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Fulton

KINGSTREE — Services for Mary York Fulton will be held at 1 p.m. today at Greater Bethel AME Church, burial in Kingstree Cemetery. Henryhand Funeral Home is in charge. Visitation is at 515 Reed St., Apt. 3A, Kings Court Apts., Kingstree. Mrs. Fulton died Dec. 1, 2004. Surviving: sons, Elmore Jr., James and Leroy Fulton; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

Horace Jones

BAMBERG — Horace Winfield Jones, of 203 Henry St., Bamberg, SC 29003, husband of Mary Beard Jones, born October 19, 1927, in Charleston, SC, died December 6, 2004, at 1:47 a.m. in Bamberg County Hospital. He was the son of the late Horace Leroy Jones and the late Azelee Jones Jones. He was affiliated with The Apostolic Church and retired as an Insurance Supervisor. He loved all sports including baseball, fishing and football.

Services are December 8, 2004, Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Cooner Funeral Home Chapel. Burial to follow in South End Cemetery. Officiated by Pastor Darrell J. Pitre. Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Survivors: his wife of the home, 1 son: Steve & Marcel Winfield Jones of Charleston, SC, 3 daughters: Elizabeth & Kenneth Dyches of Hilda, SC, Linda & Jimmye Still of Blackville, SC, Katherine & Jackie Fisk of Bamberg, SC, 1 stepson: Marion T. & LaVern Crider of Summerville, SC, 1 sister: Louise & J.W. Johnson of Orangeburg, SC, 1 brother: Paul & Vermel Jones of West Columbia, SC, half brother: Rev. Larry & Linda Jones of Swansea, SC & half sister: Gloria Jean Bair of Bamberg, SC, 8 grandchildren & 11 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by 1 brother: Bobby Jones.

Visitation will be December 7, 2004, Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Cooner Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to The Apostolic Church 44 Calhoun St. Bamberg, SC 29003.

Lessie Major

NORTH — Services for Lessie Mae Major, 90, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Maloney Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is noon-8 p.m. today at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 132 Short St., North. Mrs. Major died December 2, 2004, at her residence.

Freddie Johnson Jr.

NORTH CHARLESTON — Services for Freddie Lee Johnson Jr. will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Viewing is 1-5 p.m. today at Suburban Funeral Home. Surviving are his mother, Norma Williams Johnson; brother, Blanton Johnson; sisters, Monica Thompson, Tryphenia Johnson.

Mabel Lawson

BUFFALO — Services for Mabel Evans Lawson, 84, former owner/operator of Nixie Beauty Shop, widow of Martin Lawson, will be 2 p.m. Thursday (viewing 1-2 p.m.) at Buffalo Baptist Church, burial in Union Memorial Gardens. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Buffalo to Lawrence and Annie Willard Evans, she died Dec. 6, 2004. Surviving: sisters, Margaret West, Barbara Land.

Willie McLeod

SUMTER — Services for Willie James McLeod, 49, are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Job’s Mortuary with burial in Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery. Born in Sumter to George Sr. and Dessie Cook McLeod, he died Dec. 2, 2004. Surviving: children, Gloria Isaac, Willie Rufus; five grandchildren; siblings, Melvin, Robert, Katherine McLeod, Willie Mae Porcher, Ruby Davis; uncles; aunts; nieces; nephews.

Bobby Mickle

LUGOFF — Funeral services for Bobby Mickle, 66, will be held on Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. in Springvale Baptist Church with burial to follow in Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev. Richard Cameron and Rev. Todd Horton will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 7, 2004, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, c/o Lillian Reeves, 75 Victoria Road, Lugoff, SC 29078 or Kershaw County Relay for Life, c/o Gail Kirkland, 647 Lachicotte Road, Lugoff, SC 29078.

Bobby Mickle died Sunday, December 5, 2004. Born in Kershaw County, he was the son of the late Robert Thomas Mickle and Emma Lee Rabon Ray. He retired from the Camden Police Department and the Kershaw County Detention Center. Bobby was in law enforcement for 30 years. He worked with the Kershaw County Recreation Department as an umpire and referee for 42 years and coached in the recreation league, helping his grandson’s team until his health declined. Bobby was named a lifetime member of the South Carolina Jail Administration Association, an active member in the Kershaw County Relay for Life, a board member with the ABLE Club (Athletic Boosters of Lugoff Elgin), on the Board of Directors at the May Plant Credit Union for numerous years and served on the Alpha Center board, and was a Kershaw County Councilman from 1998-2002. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Emogene Robinson Mickle, daughters and sons-in-law, Lindy and Joe Cashion, Sharon and Brent Cole, and Karen and Randy Graham all of Lugoff, grandchildren, Will and Kelly Graham, Hannah Cole, and Sarah Kay Cashion, brother, Willie Mickle of Camden, sister, Margaret Byars of Columbia, numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Alberta Hoffman, Pearl Ford, Mamie McNulton, Sarah Hoffman, Irene Munn, and Ella Mobley, brothers, George, Tom, Mendal, and Robert Mickle. Pallbearers are Paul Davis, Marvin Lee Brown, Harold “Stick” Brown, Billy Moore, Gene Hartis, Ed Segars, and David West.

Sandra Simpson

CHESTER — Services with burial for Sandra Delores “Sandy” Simpson, 2 p.m. Wednesday (viewing 1 p.m.) at Zion Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church; viewing is also 3-9 p.m. today at Christopher King’s Funeral Home. Born in Chester to Kamellow and Glorious M. Simpson, she died Dec. 3, 2004. Surviving: daughters, LaTerrica Lowery, Zyon Simpson; parents; 3 siblings; grandparents, Levi, Evelyn Mayfield.

William Wilson

DALZELL — A graveside service for William Lewis Wilson, 75, USAF (Ret.), 10 a.m. Thursday: Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Cemetery; visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday: Lawrence Brown Service F.H., Selma, Ala. Bullock Funeral Home, Sumter, is in charge. Born in Selma to Hallett and Florence Wilson, he died Dec. 6, 2004. Surviving: wife, Margaret; children, Richard, Michael, Donnie, Robin; sister; grandchildren.

Robert Wright

SUMTER — Services for Robert Earl “Randolph” Wright, 59, are 11 a.m. today at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Sumter to Solomon Wright and Mattie Butler McMillan, he died December 2, 2004. Surviving: aunt and uncle, Mamie and Henry Scriven; brothers, Edward Wright, Marion McMillan Jr.; adopted sister, Rosa Reese; nieces, nephews, other relatives.

Mary McDaniel

WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mrs. Mary Roach McDaniel, 76, of West Columbia, will be held 1 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, December 8, 2004, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock this Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, David Jetton, Matthew Roach, Kyle Roach and Daniel Roach, nephew, Rick Tolliver and John Reeves, husband of granddaughter, Charity. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 111 Executive Point Blvd., Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. McDaniel, wife of James F. McDaniel, died Sunday, December 5, 2004, surrounded by many of her loved ones. Born in Hixson, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary Tolliver. She married Earl Henry Roach in 1946 and, with her children, accompanied him as he pursued his Army career in Georgia, Hawaii, Washington State, Virginia, Kansas and Hawaii again before moving to Columbia, where her husband died in 1966. Mrs. McDaniel then married Mr. James F. McDaniel in 1969 and lived in Northeast Columbia until moving to West Columbia in 1985. She was a faithful member of Gospel Time Bible Church in South Congaree, pastored by her son, Ronald C. Roach.

Survivors include: her husband, James; children, David H. Roach and wife, Linda of Lexington, Ronald C. Roach and wife Sandra of South Congaree, Earline Lockhart and husband Gary of Atlanta, GA, Sandra M. Price and husband Kenny of South Congaree, and Constance A. Johnson of Irmo; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia Wells of Athens, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by infant daughter, Jeanette Faye, and brother, John Nelson Tolliver.

We will never forget you. Your life was a life illuminated by the love of Christ shining through you and though your light has burnt out in this world, it will shine forever bright in the hearts of all of us who knew and loved you so very much.
