Effie M. Robinson
Effie Mims Robinson, 91, widow of Junius P. Robinson Sr., died Wednesday June 19, 2002, at her home.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Edward W. Mims and Janie Coker Mims Sanders. She was a member of First Penecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include two sons, Timothy P. Robinson and his wife, Susie, of LeMoore, Calif., and Thomas J. Robinson and his wife, Bonnie, of Camden; five daughters, Grace Hallman and her husband, Jake, Eddie Alston and her husband William, and Berneas Robbins, of Sumter, Sybil Garnett and her husband Joe, of Charleston and Wanda Rodgers and her husband Larry of Rembert; a brother, Daniel Mims of Manning; a sister, Martha McElveen of Sumter; 27 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, J.P. Robinson Jr. and Norman W. Robinson; a daughter, Elneater Minnis; three brothers, Needham Mims, Norman W. Mims and E.W. Mims; and two sisters, Mollie Morris and Ruth Mims.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Ed Hanna and Reese Miles officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Grandsons Tommy Moore, Kyle Robinson, Jeffrey Robinson, Robert Robinson, Brit Rodgers and Joe Minnis were pallbearers with great-grandsons serving as honorary pallbearers.

Austin P. Simon
Austin Paul Simon, 84, husband of Gladys Bethea Simon, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 7, 1918, in the McBee section of Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Ned Betrand and Annie Simon White. He was a stepson of the late Bertie White Sr. He was raised by his grandparents, the late Rev. Ison and Alice Taylor Simon. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Trinity AME Church, where he served on the Trustee Board and the Men’s Club. A member of Carter-Sullivan American Legion Post No. 204, he served in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. He was a former retired owner of Simon’s Grocery, Simon’s A.B.C. Store and Simon’s Pool Room.

Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Cynthia Lane, and her husband, Kenneth Lane Sr., of Philadelphia; two stepsons, Freddie Bethea and his wife, Diane, and James Bethea and his wife, Minnie, of Manning; a stepdaughter, Patricia Bethea of Queen Village, N.Y.; a brother, Willie White of Manning; a sister, Shirley Keels and her husband, Bennie, of Manning; and four stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bertie White Jr. and Lee Ernest Betrand and three sisters, Mary Alice Gordon, Ethel White and Wilhemnia Mims.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity A.M.E. Church with the Rev. John H. Frederick, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Deloris Gerow, George P. Windley Sr. and Dr. Cokley Richburg. Burial followed in the Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery, Goodwill Church Road, Bloomville Community, Manning.

Members of Carter-Sullivan American Legion Post No. 204 were pallbearers.

Missionary Ladies were flower bearers.

Lillian F. Stewart
Lillian “Daughter” Fleming Stewart, 93, widow of David Stewart, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 3, 1909, in the Wilson section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Vander and Anna Dupree Fleming. She attended Biggers AME Church and was educated in the Biggers School.

She also attended nursing school in the Bronx, N.Y., where she worked and lived for more than 60 years. In her youth, she attended Sunday school and worship services at Biggers AME Church.

Survivors include three brothers, Vander Fleming Jr., Booker T. Fleming of Manning, and Allen Fleming of Charleston; a sister, Evelena Green of Charleston; and a sister-in-law, Everlena Fleming of Manning.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Andrew Jordan officiating.

Burial followed in the Muldrow Cemetery, S.C. 261, Manning.

Pallbearers were nephews. Floral bearers were the Missionary Ladies of Biggers AME Church.

Rev. Sam W. Whack
The Rev. Sam Willie Whack Sr., 86, widower of the late Queen Anne Witherspoon Whack and husband of Evangelist Ola Brown Graham Whack, died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 21, 1915, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sammy Whack. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He received extensive theological training and certificates at Morris College in Sumter. He was a retired framer and master carpenter. He was a member of Summerton Masonic Lodge No. 366 and a member of the Clarendon Branch of the NAACP. The Rev. Whack was called into the ministry at the early age of 18 years old. He served as pastor of Piney Grove Baptist Church of Cades, Hickory Grove Baptist Church of Turbeville, Goodwill Baptist Church of Manning, Shiloh Baptist Church of Summerton, Rock Hill Baptist Church for 23 years and Antioch Baptist Church of the Jordan Community in Clarendon County for 35 years. He has served in many capacities, from moderator of the South Jordan Union and the vice-moderator of the Sumter Baptist Association to the executive chairman of the board of the Sumter Baptist Association.

Survivors besides his wife of Florence include two sons, Rev. Sam Willie Whack Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Manning and Minister Eddie Whack and his wife Sonya of Sumter; four stepsons, Wallace Graham and his wife Dorothy of Lake City, Rev. Hoyt Graham and his wife Nora of East Orange, N.J., Minister Billy Graham and his wife Marylynn and Minister Donald Graham and his wife Cheryl of Manning; two daughters, Dolly W. Hunter of Manning and Tonya Jackson of Florence; three stepdaughters, Jennie Fleming and her husband Robert, Elease Hickson and her husband Frankie of Florence and Diane Haynes and her husband Michael of Sumter; a brother, Leroy Prince of Manning; 35 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Prince and William Prince; and two sisters, Vermel Whack and Alice Riley.

Services were 3 p.m. with the Rev. Jerial Dingle, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. O’Donald Dingle, Gussie Ceasar, Sam Miller, J.H. Pringle, M.J. Walters, Drs. Marion Newton, W.T. Johnson and Cokley Richburg.

Burial followed in St. Matthews Cemetery.

Pallbearers were members of Summerton Masonic Lodge No. 366.

Honorary pallbearers were ministers.

Floral bearers were members of Queen of South Order of Eastern Star Lodge No. 304.

Jefferson W. Black
Sumter - Jefferson Walter Black, 80, husband of 59 years to Marjorie Laurette Matthews Black, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Mariner Healthcare East.

Born in Lavern, Ala., he was the son of the late Cebron Walter Black and Lillian Estelle Gardner Black. He retired from the U.S. Army after serving 21 years and served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a corrections officer for 13 years with the Wateree Correction Facility. He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Michael J. Black and his wife Anne of Manning and Chris E. Black and his wife Dottie of Sumter; one daughter, Lorraine Marie Curtis of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Trudie Bozeman of Sylvester, Ga., and Louise Freeland of Selma, Ala.; eight grandchildren, Mark Black, Patrick Black, Robert Black, Christopher Curtis, Cathi Curtis, Jennifer Cobel, Shauna Black and Joey Black; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

Services were Saturday, June 29, 2002, at 11 a.m. in St. Anne’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Daniel J. Carboy C.S.s.R. officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 216 E. Liberty Street, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

William Adams
Pinewood - William “Bey” Adams, 71, widower of Fannie Andrews Adams, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born Sept. 15, 1930, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Stanley Adams and Viola Gibson Adams. He attended Clarendon County public schools and joined Antioch UME Church in Rimini in his youth. He later moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and joined Emmanuel AME Church. After 40 years in New York, he returned to South Carolina and reinstated his membership with Antioch UME Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Edith A. Brown of Brooklyn and Ella A. Carter of Summerton.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch UME Church with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Warren Hatcher, Jacob Clark and Leroy T. James.

Burial followed in Antioch Cemetery.

Cousins served as pallbearers.

Members of the Missionary Society of Antioch UME Church served as flower bearers.

LaFoye M. Watford
Lamar - LaFoye Manly Watford, 88, husband of 65 years to Rosa Lee Glover Watford, died Friday, June 28, 2002, in a Bishopville nursing home after an illness.

Born in Darlington County, he was the son of the late Manly and Rosa Lee Odom Watford. He lived in this area from 1914 to 1932, returned from Winston-Salem in 1947 and resided in Lamar ever since. He was a lifelong member of Lamar United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the building committee for the fellowship hall and was a member of the O.L. Smith Sunday school class. He was also active in local civic affairs. He was a founding member of the Lamar Civitan Club, a founding member of Lamar Country Club (Governor’s Run Country Club), a trustee of Lamar Cemetery for 55 years, a member of the Lamar area school board for a number of years and was instrumental in bringing a Piggly Wiggly store to Lamar. He was self-employed for 50 years in the insurance and real estate business.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include two daughters, Beverly Watford Tames and her husband Bob of Bishopville and Cindy Watford Howell and her husband Dwayne of Turbeville; and four grandchildren, Lee Turner of Boulder, Colo., Mitchell Turner and his wife Janet of Atlanta, Ga., Kristopher Howell of Franklin, Va. and Chaz Howell of Turbeville.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Turner; two brothers Everette Watford and Larand Watford; and three sisters, Annie Bell Amos, Beatrice Tolson and Louise Huggins.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Lamar United Methodist Church.

Burial followed in Lamar Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Lamar United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 555, Lamar, S.C., 29069 or to McCoy Memorial Nursing Center, 207 Chappell Drive, Bishopville, S.C., 29010.

Ruby M. Ross
Ruby McInnis Ross, 83, widow of Fred M. Ross, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Covenant Place.

Born in Robeson County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Archibald McEachern McInnis and Ruby Ingram McInnis.

She was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Rachel Forrestall and her husband John of Buford, Ga.; two brothers, Dan McInnis of Alcolu and Ken McInnis of Sumter; three sisters, Pearl Turner of Sumter, Agnes Harrelson of Alcolu and Juanita Ledbetter of Athens, Tenn.; three grandchildren, David Forrestall, Palm Roper and Jeff Forrestall; and five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Allen Ross; a brother, Alton McInnis; and a sister, Evelyn M. McCoy.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Buckner officiating.

Burial followed 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Park Hill Cemetery in Columbus, Ga.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6004, Columbia, S.C. 29260.
