Ruth Pearson Wilbur Plowden
Ruth Pearson Wilbur Plowden, 83, wife of William Coskrey Plowden Jr., died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, in Providence Hospital.

Born Sept. 27, 1918, in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Walter Bouie Wilbur and the late Ruth Cooner Wilbur. She attended The College of Charleston and was married for 61 years. She was a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church, where she was very active and a member of the Auxiliary. Mrs. Plowden was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church Auxiliary and Growth Group and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors besides her husband of New Zion include a son, William C. Plowden III and his wife June Coker Plowden of Columbia; a daughter, Martha Norris Grigg and her husband Reginald “Reggie” Grigg of Greenville; and six grandchildren, Michael West, Scott West, Bill Plowden, Allyson Plowden, Andrew Grigg and Elizabeth Grigg.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Plowden West.

Services were 3 p.m. Thursday in Sardinia Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon Reed and the Rev. Harold R. Patterson officiating.

Burial followed in New Zion United Methodist Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Michael Pearson West, David Scott West, William C. Plowden IV, Andrew Lloyd Grigg, William Henry Simmons Jr. and Ret. Cpt. Franklin Griffith West Jr.

Memorials may be made to Sardinia Presbyterian Church or Gideon’s International, P.O. Box 1795, Sumter, S.C. 29151.

Mary E. Gardner
Kershaw - Mary Edna Jones Gardner, 73, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 2, 1928, in Camden, she was the daughter of the late Paul Elvet and Frances Clemets Jones.

She was a homemaker and attended Laurel Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathie Bradham and her husband Joe of Manning; and two grandsons, Brand Bradham and D.J. Bradham of Manning.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Kershaw City Cemetery with the Rev. Bobby Owens officiating.

Violet M. Freeman
Violet McIntosh Freeman, 78, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in New Zion, she was the daughter of the late Eugene Scott McIntosh and Viola Bradshaw McIntosh. She was a member of Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was a 1943 graduate of the Tuomey School of Nursing and was a retired registered nurse with Tuomey Healthcare System.

Survivors include two sisters, Blanche Price of Warwick, N.Y. and Sadie Hansen of Little Silver, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Freeman; and a brother, Leroy McIntosh.

Graveside services were 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Baynai officiating.

Memorials may be made to Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1746 U.S. 521 S., Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Jimmy Felder
Pinewood - Prophet Jimmy Felder Jr., 49, husband of Cassandra Gaines Felder, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the U.S. Veteran’s Medical Center.

Born Oct. 14, 1952, in Summerton, he was the son of Maria Brunson Felder of Manning and the late Jimmy Felder Sr. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, and attended Holly Hill Baptist Church in the Bloomville community of Clarendon County during his youth.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged. He was pastor and founder of the Holy Ghost Headquarters Ministry in Manning.

Survivors besides his wife and mother include two sons, Kevin Felder of Manning, and Jimmy Felder III of the home; two daughters, Lashawanda Donaldson of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Shalanda Donaldson of New York City, N.Y.; a brother, Lawrence Felder and wife Georgianna Felder of Lancaster, Pa.; 11 sisters, Mary Moore and her husband Frank of Belle Glade, Fla., Martha Huggins of Bell Glade, Mary L. Robinson of Lancaster, Pa., Lenora Kilburn and husband Chester of Lancaster, Evangelist Frances Morant and husband Elder Willie Morant of Lancaster, the Rev. Marie Harvin and husband William of Alcolu, Theola Felder of Lancaster, Margaretta Servance and husband Joseph of Manning, Carrie M. Hilton of Manning and Bertha Felder of Alcolu.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, Manning, with Apostle Robert Wilson Jr. officiating, assisted by the Revs. O’Donald Dingle, Lawrence Cantey, Willie Singleton, Vincent Syndab, Bishop Charlie Williams and Evangelists Elsa Syndab and Jackie Dennison.

Burial followed in Holly Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Phenis Brockington
Phenis “Man” Brockington, 80, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Hopewell Healthcare Center.

Born Nov. 28, 1921, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Archie and Rosa Williams Brockington. He attended Sumter and Clarendon county public schools. He was a faithful member of St. John’s Holiness Church, where he served as a deacon. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and his tours of duty included Africa, India, Burma and China. By trade, he worked as a carpenter.

Survivors include four sons, Phenis “Flap” Brockington Jr. and his wife Hattie and Michael Brockington of Sumter, Velvett Brockington and his wife Deborah of Baltimore and Lee Brockington and his wife Patricia of Providence, R.I.; two daughters, Barbara Brockington of Sumter and Janice Boyd of Bishopville; seven brothers, Luscious McFadden, Nicholas McFadden and his wife Edith, Johnny McFadden and his wife Rosa Lee, Fulton McFadden, David McFadden and Hershel McFadden; four sisters, Carrie Brockington of Philadelphia, Frances Wright and Ola Mae McFadden of Manning and Nancy McFadden of Providence; a brother-in-law, Richard Dunham; two sisters-in-law, Lynn Brockington and Rosena Brown; 22 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Dunham and Orin Brockington; a daughter, Carrie Baten; two grandchildren Kathy Benjamin and Casey Brockington; three brothers, Vernell Herbert and Willie; and two sisters, Ethel and Mildred Brockington.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Holiness Church with the Rev. Joe Mack, pastor and Bishop Tommie Doe, eulogist, officiating, assisted by elder Lillie Witherspoon and Emma Brown, pastor.

Burial followed in Mayesville Community Cemetery.

Members of the Sumter Police Department served as pallbearers.

Granddaughters and nieces served as floral bearers.

Rev. Robert C. Korn
West Columbia - Rev. Robert C. “Bob” Korn, 70, husband of 50 years to June Walker Korn, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at his home in West Columbia.

Born May 25, 1932, in Wheeling, W.V., he was the son of the late Robert Anton and Anna Wurtzbacher Korn. He was a 1957 graduate of the University of South Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. He was the 1972 USC Alumni President and a USC football letterman in ‘51, ‘52 and ‘53. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and archer. He won the 1998 state of S.C. Bowhunters Association state championship in the traditional category. He was a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga., an ordained Presbyterian minister since 1959 and with the Presbyterian Church in America since its inception in 1973 and a member of the Palmetto Presbytery. He served many Presbyterian churches in South Carolina and Alabama.

Survivors besides his wife of West Columbia include two sons, Rev. Robert Harold Korn and wife Sheri of Winnsboro and Timothy Charles Korn and wife Pat of Summerton; two daughters, Diane Korn Cullum and husband Rev. Dickie Cullum of Dillon and Laurie Korn Blackmon and husband Robbie of Williston; one brother, Harold Lee Korn of Bethune; two sisters, Carol Taylor of Camden and Linda Graham and husband Kershaw of Bethune; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandaughter, Jennifer Blackmon.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday in the New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Manning, with the Revs. Charlie Tyler, Billy Rufus, Jimmy Lyons, Pat Patteson and Dr. Gordon Reed officiating.

Graveside services were 3 p.m. Monday in Southland Gardens Cemetery in West Columbia with the Revs. Joe Beale and John Rogers officiating.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 111 Executive Point Boulevard, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Ethel Mae N. James
Ethel Mae Nelson James, 65, wife of Charlie James Sr., died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 31, 1937, in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Frazier Nelson Sr. and Charlotte Lemon Nelson. She received her education at Alcolu Elementary School and was a member of the Reeseville AME Church.

Survivors include a son, Charlie James Jr. and his wife Corliss of Baltimore; a daughter, Rosa James of Manning; a brother, Levi Nelson and his wife, Hattie of Meridian, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Nelson; four brothers, Henry, Amos, Frazier Jr. and Albert; and four sisters, Lila Beaufort, Gloria Sabb, Vinnie Green and Rett Nelson.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Reeseville AME Church in Alcolu with Marie Harvin, pastor, officiating, assisted by Thelma Kennedy, pastor, and evangelist Linda Simmons.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.
