John H. Holladay
John Harmon Holladay, 91, widower of Mary Rhodus Holladay, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Carolina Hospital Systems.

Born July 28, 1910, in Manning, he was the son of the late George Allen and Tavie Richbourg Holladay. He was a member and deacon of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church. He was retired from farming and from Georgia Pacific.

Survivors include four sons, John Harmon Holladay Jr., George Allen Holladay, Ray Carlisle Holladay and Paul James Holladay of Manning; two daughters, Mary Evelyn Holladay Moseley of Salters and Betty Jo Holladay Anderson of Summerville; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Larry Hughes officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Thelma R. Gamble
Andrews - Thelma Richburg Gamble, 81, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at her residence.

Born Nov. 19, 1920, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late George W. Richburg and Catherine Strange Richburg. She grew up in Clarendon County and graduated from Manning High School. She was employed in the retail clothing business for a number of years. She lived in the Suttons community of Williamsburg County for many years, where she was a member of Suttons United Methodist Church and the Esther-Elizabeth Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Forever Young group at Trinity United Methodist Church in Andrews. She was the widow of Julius Adam Gamble.

Survivors include a son, J.A. Gamble Jr. and his wife Rhonda of Lexington; two daughters, Mary G. Cooper and her husband Johnny of Andrews and Elaine G. Moore of Andrews; a brother, G. Olin Richburg of Sumter; three sisters, Virginia Langley of Sumter, Doris Shelley of Leesburg, Fla., and Helen Lea of Manning; five grandchildren, Leigha Cooper, Joni Cooper and Elizabeth Bourne of Andrews and Torri Gamble and Chad Gamble of Lexington; and two great-grandchildren, Julia and Dawson of Andrews.

Services were 4 p.m. Tuesday in Suttons United Methodist Church with the Revs. J. Robert Huggins and Billy E. Rufus officiating.

Burial followed in the Churchyard under the direction of the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home.

Carmen S. Evans
Carmen Smith Evans, 77, widow of Thomas Evans, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Mariner Healthcare East in Sumter.

Born July 20, 1924, in New Zion, she was the daughter of the late John Smith and Lula Wisteria Morris Smith Aaron. She was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Women’s Sunday School Class and the Wednesday Evening Growth Group of New Zion UMC.

Survivors include a son, Al Evans and wife Kelli of Sumter; four granddaughters, Stephanie Bryant, Heather Evans, Cassidy Evans and Kaitlin Geddings of Sumter; and two special cousins, JoAnn DuBose of Manning and Sonny DuBose of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, MiKayla Gauthier; and a stepfather, William Aaron.

Services were 4 p.m. Saturday in New Zion United Methodist Church with the Revs. Fred Treaster and Murray Gibbons officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were the members of the United Methodist Women, the Women’s Sunday School Class and the Wednesday Evening Growth Group.

Shellock N. Carrion
Richmond, Va. - Shellock Moneak Nathaniel Carrion, 33, wife of David W. Carrion, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals.

Born Feb. 3, 1969, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Christopher and Willie Mae McFadden Gadsden Sr. She attended Charleston County public schools and was a 1987 graduate of Garrett High School. She attended school in Clearwater, Fla., receiving her training as a flight attendant. In her youth, she attended Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu. She later joined St. Paul Catholic Church in Jacksonville, Fla. She was attended Johnson and Wales University, where she studied culinary art, maintained a 4.0 grade point average and was on the dean’s list. She was proprietor of NailShack Boutique and Nail Salon in Charleston and was employed by BJ’s in Jacksonville.

Survivors besides her husband and parents include a son, Jordan Mikal Carrion of Virginia Beach, Va.; six brothers, Christopher Gadsden Jr. and his wife Alice, Matthew Nathaniel and his wife Laversa, Christopher Nathaniel III and his wife Wendy and Macedonia Nathaniel of Charleston, Vincent Gadsden and his wife Zoe of Washington, D.C., and Gerald Gadsden and his wife Wanda of Absecon, N.J.; nine sisters, Evangelist Deloris G. Edwards of Allendale, S.C., Brenda L. Nathaniel and her husband Ray and Rhonda King and her husband Joseph of Jacksonville, Barbara Duffy and her husband Herbert, Theresa Nesbitt and her husband Wendell and Keisha Moultrie and her husband Eric of Charleston, Debra Roberts and her husband Horace of Valdosta, Ga., Cathy Burkes and her husband Henry of Summerville and Wanda Carroll and her husband Luby of Silver Springs, Md.

Services were 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, officiating.

Korey Edwards, Christopher R. Gadsden, Frederick Greene, Fred Greene, Charles Green and Adrian Osborne served as pallbearers.

Brothers served as honorary pallbearers.

Moses Livingston
Washington, D.C. - Moses Livingston Sr., 68, widower of Mildred Livingston, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at his home.

Born July 4, 1933, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Gip Livingston Jr. and Martha Dyson Livingston. After high school, he enlisted in the armed services and was honorably discharged after two years of service. He was affiliated with Pilgrim AME Church of Washington, D.C.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis and Kevin Livingston of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Emmanuel and Gip Livingston III of Washington, D.C. and Abraham Livingston of New York; three sisters, Mary Bowman of Washington, D.C., Gussie Williams of Elloree, S.C., and Moline Mack of Richmond, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Tina Livingston of Capitol Heights, Md.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Moses Livingston Jr.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Marvin McIntyre of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Miami officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Ruby T. McLeod
Ruby Mae Boseman Thames McLeod, 71, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Alice and Minnie Hodge Boseman. She was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church and also a member of Westside Baptist Church. She was twice married, first to the late F. Joffery Thames and later to the late Dewey McLeod.

Survivors include a son, Pete Thames of Dalzell; three daughters, Betsy Hair and her husband Clarence and Oleen Rodriguez and her husband Ray of Sumter and Debra Thames of St. Mary’s, Ga.; a brother, Alton Boseman of Manning; three sisters, Mamie London of Bishopville, Sara Horton of Lavergne, Tenn., and Helen Miller of Rocky Mount, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were 10 a.m. Thursday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Rodney Howard officiating.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Crosswell Baptist Church, 604 Mathis St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Virginia D. Mitchell
Santee - Virginia Dixon Mitchell, 61, widow of Leroy Mitchell, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Colleton Medical Center.

Born Feb. 28, 1941, in the Summerton community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Harry Dixon and Alice Frierson Dixon. She was a former member of St. Matthews AME Church in Summerton. She later moved to Miami, where she attended Freewill Baptist Church. After moving back to South Carolina, she joined Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Santee.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Alice Riggins and her husband the Rev. Edmond J. of Santee; four brothers, Grady Dixon and his wife Dorothy of Miami, Freddy Dixon and his wife Deloris of Summerton, Albert Dixon and his wife Frances of Columbia and Jessie Dixon and his wife Frances of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Ruby Dixon and Annie L. Dixon of Brooklyn; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Chester Dixon; and a daughter, Izona Bennett.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. James E. Council officiating assisted by elder Kenneth Shuler and the Revs. Anjela Robinson and Beverly Graham.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Montes L. Pearson
Montes Leacterial “Moonie” Pearson, 24, companion of Gail Burgess, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 23, 1977, in Manning, he was the son of Edward and Ola Mae Jackson Pearson. He attended East Clarendon High School in Turbeville. In his youth, he attended Sunday school and worship services at St. John AME Church. He was a former employee of the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

Survivors besides his companion and parents include two daughters, Montera Latrell Pearson of Fort Bragg, N.C. and Montanqua Shyna Pearson of the home; two brothers, Elbert Pearson and his wife Charlene and Hywaun Pearson of Turbeville; and maternal grandparents, Flora Mae Jackson of Olanta and Robert Jackson of High Point, N.C.

Services were noon Saturday at St. John AME Church with the Rev. B.L. Green, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Jerome McCray, Leroy Evans and elder William Boyd Jr.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Hattie Canty
Pinewood - Hattie Canty, 85, widow of Willie Canty, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 2, 1916, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Richard Brown and Rosa Lee Brown. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined New Hope AME Church.

Survivors include a son, David Canty of Pinewood; a daughter, Virginia Canty of Pinewood; two sisters, Louise Spann of Pontiac, Mich., and Ella Brown of Pinewood; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four siblings, Janie Aiken, Virginia Brown, Charles Brown and Clyde Brown.

Services were 3 p.m. Friday at New Hope AME Church with the Rev. J.D. Seawright, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Leroy T. James.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Alva D. Cousar
Hopkins - Alva Darnold Cousar, 54, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born May 21, 1948, in Sumter, he was the son of the late John Landon Cousar Jr. and the late Avalon Darnold Cousar. He was a mobile home technician and a Presbyterian.

Survivors include a niece, Tammi Cousar Jones of Hopkins; and a number of cousins, aunts and uncles.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with Dr. Gordon K. Reed officiating.

Memorials may be made to Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or to Sardinia Presbyterian Church, Gen. Del., Sardinia, S.C. 29143.
