Evangelist B. Felder
North Charleston - Evangelist Brendella Felder, 49, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Roper Hospital in Charleston.

Born Sept. 27, 1952, in Charleston, she was the daughter of Mary Ida Felder McCoy and the late Charles McCoy Sr. She was educated in the public schools of Charleston and a member of Open Door Deliverance Church.

She was a former employee of the U.S. Post Office and former manager of a Po-Folks Restaurant.

Survivors besides her mother include two daughters, Mary L. Felder and Annot S. Felder of Charleston; three brothers, Charles McCoy of Columbia, Richard Dozier of New York City, N.Y., and Clevon Dozier and his wife Deloris of N.C.; four sisters, Rozela McCoy of New York City, Jennifer McCoy and Cynthia McCoy of Columbia and Cynthia Gathers of Charelston; and two grandchildren.

Services were 1 p.m. Sunday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, Manning, with Overseer Eugene Gathers officiating assisted by Elder Jamal Shorter and Evangelists Cynthia Gathers and Eugenia Jones.

Burial followed in Muldrow Cemetery, Manning.

Pansy P. Hampton
Newark, N.J. - Pansy P. Hampton, 39, died Saturday, July 6, 2002 at her home.

Born July 17, 1962, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late David and Alice White Hampton.

Survivors include four brothers, Isaac Hampton and his wife, Janice and Michael Hampton, both of Newark, David Hampton and his wife Dorothy of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the Rev. Johnny Hampton and his wife, the Rev. Easter of Summerton; eight sisters, Susan Hampton and her husband Albert, Rebecca Stevens and her husband Nathaniel, Mary Howard and her husband Gene, Alice Hampton, Rosa McCray and her husband John, Barbara Wilcox and her husband Harry and Dorothy Hampton of Newark and Julia H. Johnson of Rimini; an aunt, Mary James; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services were 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Perry Funeral Home of Newark.

Calvin James
Fayetteville, N.C. - Calvin “Bull” James, 97, husband of Lillie G. James, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at his home in Fayetteville.

Born Sept. 4, 1904, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Powell DuBose and Mary James. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Antioch UME Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Melvin, Otis and Wayne James of Fayetteville; two daughters, Sharon Smith and Carrie James of Fayetteville; a sister, Mattie Mae DuBose of New York, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Abraham Caldwell of Summerton; a sister-in-law, Annie A. DuBose of Pinewood; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, eight sisters and seven brothers.

Services were 2 p.m. in Fayetteville.

Irvin King
Irvin King, 73, husband of Olethia King, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at the home of his brother and sister-in-law.

Born Feb. 10, 1929, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Willie and Frances McCray King. He attended Sumter County public schools and was a lifelong member of Rock Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and sang on the gospel choir. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged after a two-year tour of duty. He was employed by Georgia-Pacific until his retirement.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a daughter, Mary Charin; three brothers, James King and his wife Bessie and Wilbert King and his wife Virginia of Sumter and Abraham King and his wife Mary of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Leola Young of Philadelphia; two brothers-in-law, David Thames of Winter Park, Fla., and Eddie Thames of Baltimore; four sisters-in-law, Annie Black of Denmark, Susie and Effie McCray of Baltimore and Vastine King of Sumter; four grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, William David and Marion King; and three sisters, Bessie Mae King, Rosa Lee Hudges and Gussie Mae McFadden.

Services were 4 p.m. Friday at Rock Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon Winn officiating.

Burial followed in Rock Hill Cemetery.

Rebecca Nelson
Rebecca Nelson, 77, widow of Elijah Nelson, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 10, 1925, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Saul and Minnie Jackson Wright. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she was baptized at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. In later years, she moved to New York City and was employed by Custom Jewelry for 40 years. After retirement, she returned to Sumter.

Survivors include two brothers, Edward Wright and Robert Earl Wright of Sumter; a brother-in-law, David Nelson of Sumter; and a niece, Jeanette Vaughn of Paxville.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service with the Rev. Larry Weston officiating.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Harriett D. Parson
Harriett D. Martin Parson, 57, wife of David Parson, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 20, 1944, in the Ram Bay community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah “Bubba” Martin and Alma McBride Martin. She was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and attended Briggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. While living in Trenton, N.J., she was employed as a teacher’s aide and after moving back to South Carolina, she was employed at several local restaurants.

Survivors besides her husband of Trenton include two sons, David Parson Jr. and Derrick William Parson and his wife Lisa of Davis Station; three daughters, Tonya Scott and her husband Kevin of Albuquerque, N.M., Mildred Lorraine Martin of Sumter and Melarka Parson of Summerton; a brother, Titus Martin of Davis Station; a sister, Rosa Garris of Summerton; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Ann Davis.

Services were noon Saturday at Briggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby McDonald officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Nero Pendergrass
Nero “Chink” Pendergrass, 76, husband of Mary Barr Pendergrass, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 18, 1925, in the Greeleyville section of Williamsburg County, he was the son of the late Samuel Pendergrass Sr. and Rosa Sabb Pendergrass. He attended Santee-Rosenwald School and was a member of Pine Grove AME Church, where he served on the Trustee Board and as church sexton. He was a retired carpenter and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. He was a foster parent.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include five sons, Willie Jordan of Sumter, Alexander Pendergrass and Christopher Pendergrass of Manning, Jerome Pendergrass of the home and Windell Pendergrass of Columbia; four daughters, Barbara Dozier and her husband Barry and Beatrice Simon and her husband Casper of Manning and Carrie Pendergrass and Angela Pendergrass of the home; two brothers, George Pendergrass and his wife Josephine of Manning and Samuel Pendergrass and his wife Clara of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Sadie DuPree of Manning; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jackson Pendergrass and Willie Pendergrass; and two sisters, Delores Witherspoon and Rinter Bennett.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Pine Grove AME Church, Greeleyville, with the Rev. Francis Gathers, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Eddie Pendergrass and B.J. Barr.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Trustees served as honorary pallbearers.

Nieces and Honorary Missionary Ladies served as flower bearers.

Ernest P. Barwick
Earnest P. Barwick Sr., 73, husband of Nancy G. Barwick, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Wesley Barwick and Leona Baker Barwick. He was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. He was a retired electrician from Santee Print Co.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Ernest P. Barwick Jr. and his wife Lisa of Sumter; two daughters, Darlene Barwick of Sumter and her boyfriend Keith Hodge of Manning and Becky Robinson and her husband Ronnie of Sumter; three brothers, Johnny Barwick, Wes Barwick and James Barwick of Sumter; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Barwick, Sammy Barwick, Harvey Barwick and Benjamin Barwick; and a sister, Marie Geddings.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at New Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry N. Hodge and Ed Holladay officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Donnie Barwick, Rusty Riles, Charles Barwick, Wayne Watkins, James Barwick Jr. and Doug Barwick served as pallbearers. Charles Welch, Paul Thigpen, the Rev. Jim Baker, Paul Riggs, Daniel Holliday, Talley Martin and Gordan Jolly served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to New Calvary Baptist Church, 38 Center St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Harry Billie
Harry Billie, 89, widower of Salenda Webb Billie and Claudia Ruth Witherspoon Billie, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 20, 1912, in Panola, he was the son of the late Rev. Willie Beasley Billie and Eliza Jane Holiday Billie. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church, where he served faithfully as Sunday school superintendent, deacon, class leader, trustee, a member of the prayer band and as pastor-steward. He served in any capacity he was needed. He was employed as both a farmer and a carpenter.

Survivors include a son, Harry Lee Billie Jr. and his wife Louise of West Palm, Fla.; a daughter, Margie B. Valentine and her husband Lloyd of Beverly, N.J.; two sisters, Gertrude Stukes of New York City and Sarah Washington of Summerton; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant UME Church with the Rev. James O. Robinson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Q.B. Conyers, elder Jackie Holland, the Revs. Jonathan Smith, Willie Green Jr. and Roosevelt Boyd.

Burial followed in the church cemetery in Pinewood.

Trustees of the UME churches served as pallbearers with missionaries of the UME churches serving as flower bearers.

Edna H. Davis
Edna Hodge Davis, 85, widow of Samuel Carlyle Davis, died Friday, July 19, 2002, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 9, 1916, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late William Miles Hodge and Ethel Gamble Hodge. She was a member of Paxville Baptist Church and was a retired accountant.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel Bernice Davis and wife Marjorie of Columbia and Norma Carlyle Davis and wife Gretchen of Sumter; a daughter, Carol Belt of Paxville; five grandchildren, Christopher Davis Belt, Lori Davis Melton, James Carlyle Davis, Lauren Michelle Taylor and Tammie Leigh Davis; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Davis; a son-in-law, Tommy Belt; a sister, Lillian Thigpen; and a cousin, Clyde Hodge.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Paxville Cemetery with the Rev. Gene Mosier officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.
