Lydia Floyd
Lydia Floyd, 85, widow of Carson L. Floyd, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Eliza Robinson. She retired from Mayewood School Food Service Department and was a member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include a son, John W. Floyd and his wife Marianne of Gable; two grandsons, Bill Floyd and his wife Lynn of Georgetown and David Floyd of Gable; and two great-grandsons, Brett Floyd and John Owen Floyd of Georgetown.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

John M. Hipp Jr.
John Murray Hipp Jr., 23, died Friday, July 19, 2002, in St. George.

Born Sept. 7, 1978, in Manning, he was the son of Tammy Fleming Stewart and the late John Murray Hipp Sr. He was a construction worker and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his mother of Cleveland, Tenn., include a son, Quinn Murray Hipp of Manning; a brother, Donald Fleming Hipp of Cleveland; a sister, Amber Renee Helton of Cleveland; maternal grandmother, Faye Goehring of Manning; maternal grandparents, Earl and Letha Fleming of Manning; paternal grandmother, Edith Hipp of Manning; maternal great-grandmother, Mae Gamble of Manning; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Lance Green, Dr. David Koon, Craig Helton, Brian Hipp, Jimmy Hipp and Paul Hipp served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Mitochondrial Foundation, P.O. Box 1151, Monroeville, Pa. 15146-1151, (In memory of John Murray Hipp Jr.).

Doris T. Holladay
Doris Touchberry Holladay, 77, widow of John C. Holladay Sr., died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at her residence.

Born Sept. 28, 1924, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Cleveland Richardson Touchberry Sr. and the late Agnes Bethune Touchberry. She was a graduate of Winthrop University and received a Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina and Education Specialist from the University of South Carolina. She was Coordinator for Federal Funding for Clarendon School District 1 and was formerly employed by the Oak Ridge Nuclear Facility as an Administrative Assistant. She was a member of Summerton Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Pam Dinkins and husband the Rev. David H. Dinkins Sr. of Sumter and Aggie Bradham and husband Tom of Summerton; six grandchildren, Kristen Leigh Dinkins, Keri Shea Holladay, David Hastings Dinkins Jr., Suzanne Holladay Dinkins, John Robert Dinkins and Breanna Touchberry Bradham.

She was preceded in death by a son, John C. Holladay Jr.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday in Summerton Baptist Church with the Revs. David Dinkins and Rob Pierce officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Jim Touchberry, Cleve Touchberry, Corky Huey, Tim Touchberry, Victor Touchberry and David H Dinkins Jr. served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, S.C. 29148 or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Thelma T. Hynes
Mamie Thelma Taylor Hynes, 83, widow of W.T. Hynes, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at a local nursing center.

Born in Lexington County, she was the daughter of the late John Frank Taylor Sr. and Bennie Mae McCaskill Taylor. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Wilbur T. Hynes, were owners and operators of Hynes Grocery Store on the corner of Dingle and Wright streets in Sumter for a number of years.

Survivors include three sons, Harry F. Hynes and Robert L. Hynes of Sumter and Julian R. Hynes of Manning; a brother, Frank Taylor of Georgetown; a sister, Evelyn Jones of Marion; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Jones officiating.

Johnny Black

Sumter - Johnny Black, 72, of Denmark, S.C., husband of Annie Ruth Thames Black, died Monday, August 26, 2002, at the Barnwell County Hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Levi Black Sr. and Margie Lawson Black. He was educated in Clarendon County public schools. He served in the United States military from 1953 to 1954. He was a 1958 graduate of South Carolina Area Trade School. He was employed at Voorhees College, Denmark, for a number of years as head chef, and later at Bamberg Job Corp. as chef.

Survivors besides his wife of Denmark include three sons, Dennis Black of Brooklyn, N.Y., the Rev. Eddie Black of Charlotte and Randolph Black of Denmark; two daughters, Dorothea Black of Denmark and Jacqueline Black of Columbia; three brothers, Levi Black Jr., James and Thomas Black; a sister, Luellen B. Johnson; and 11 grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 31, 2002, at Central Baptist Church, Denmark, with the Rev. Alex Jefferson and Elder Harry Odom officiating.

Burial followed at Bamberg County Memory Gardens.

Tommy Felder
Tommy Felder Sr., 82, widower of Rosa Lee Gilyard Felder, died Wednesday, August 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1921, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Gus and Elizabeth Brailsford Felder. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a lifelong member of Santee AME Church. He was a retired employee of the Martin Brother’s Logging Company.

Survivors include two sons, Willie Felder and his wife, Hattie, of Summerton and Tommy Felder Jr. and his wife, Gertrude, of Columbia; three daughters, Emma Toland and her husband, David, and Lavern Tribett of Philadelphia, and Wonna Felder of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at Santee AME Church, with the Rev. Silas Spann officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Rebecca Johnson
Bronx, N.Y. - Rebecca Johnson, 52, died Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital.

Born January 31, 1950, in Summerton, she was the daughter of Pernease Brailsford Johnson and the late Thomas Johnson Jr. She was reared by her grandparents, the late Thomas Johnson Sr. and Blanche Carrigan Johnson.

In her youth, she attended Sunday school and worship services at Taw Caw Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Wilbur Johnson of Bronx; and four sisters, Leona Johnson of Summerton, Delores Ragin and Shirley Johnson of Bronx, and DeLilah Green of Columbia. She was preceded in death by a sister, Thomasina.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ortiz Funeral Home chapel, Bronx.

Mary S. Mims
Sumter - Mary Shorter Mims, 72, widow of Edward William “E.W.” Mims, died Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at her home.
Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus N. Shorter and Camelia Tennant Shorter McLeod. She was a member of the Sumter Freewill Baptist of the Pentecostal Faith Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Raye M. Bryant and her husband, Dan, of Sumter; four brothers, Tommy “Bobby” Shorter and Billy Shorter, of Sumter, and the Rev. Charles Shorter and Roy Shorter, of Manning; three sisters, Joanna Smith of Sumter and Susie Mae “Nudy” Lowder and Juline Ward of Manning; five grandchildren, Janie Edwards, Stephen Bryant and his wife, Crecie, Amy Bryant, Wendy Horde and her husband, Tony, and Eddie L. Mims Jr.; a special friend, Bertha Coker; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie L. Mims Sr.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Larry Melton, Carl Lavender and Freddie Gaymon officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter S.C. 29150.

Moses L. Simmons
Sumter - Moses Levi Simmons died Thursday, August 29, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the sixth child born to the late Rev. Ambrose and Mrs. Catherine Pearson Simmons. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his savior and joined Bethel AME Church in Clarendon County.

Later, he moved to Baltimore, where he attended Shiloh Baptist Church. He returned to Sumter and joined St. Paul AME Church, where he remained until his death.

He attended the public schools of Sumter County and for several years, he was employed at the Bethlehem Steel Co. in Baltimore.

Survivors include a son, Wilbur Simmons of Baltimore; a daughter, Wilma (Kelvin Sr.) Thompson of Baltimore; two grandchildren, Tiffany Nicole and Kelvin Jr. of Baltimore; a brother, Milton (Bertha) Simmons of Baltimore; five sisters, Mazie B. Blocker, Rosa Ann Williams and Janie (Wilkerson) Knight of Sumter and Leola Bossard and Mary Simmons of Baltimore; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Services were held noon Monday at the St. Paul AME Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Ricky S. Simmons, eulogist, Charles B. Jackson Sr., Marion H. Newton and Johnny N. Yeadon officiating.

Candace C. White
Candace Clark White, 51, widow of Leslie Earl White, died Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born May 28, 1951, in Sommerville, N.J., she was the daughter of Charles S. Clark Sr. and the late Ruth Smested Sofield. She was a dispatcher for the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Department, and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Surviving besides her father of Washington are two daughters, Michelle Plowden and Sarah White of Manning; two sons, Richard Imboden of Lancaster and B. Ryan White of Manning; a brother, Charles S. Clark Jr. of New Mexico; a sister, Trudy Clark of Washington; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday in Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Bowe officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 129 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1794 Old Georgetown Rd, Manning.
