Eloise M. Benton
Eloise McCrea Benton, 88, widow of Eulie Benton, died Saturday, September 14, 2002, at her home in New Zion.

Born July 22, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Virginia Tisdale McCrea. She was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, William T. Benton and wife Jane, of Manning, and Terry Benton and wife, Fay, of New Zion; four grandchildren, Will Benton of Richmond, Va., Ginger Benton of Winston-Salem, N.C., Kelly Benton Brown and Jason Benton of New Zion.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Monday in New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Treaster officiated.

Memorials may be made to New Zion United Methodist Church.

Herbert E. Brinson
Columbia - Herbert Eugene Brinson, 73, husband of Ellen Conner Brinson, died Tuesday, September 10, 2002.

Born in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Homer K. and Ruth Harvin Brinson. He graduated from Manning High School. He received a degree in civil engineering in 1957 from the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Asbury Methodist Church and the men’s club. He was later employed as a physical plant director with the University of South Carolina, retiring in 1992. He was a lifelong avid Gamecocks fan.

Survivors beside his wife of Columbia include two sons, Gene Brinson and his wife, Terri, of Hopkins and Barry Brinson of New York City; a daughter, Peggy Hutto and her husband, Jim, of Charleston; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Asbury Methodist Church with the Rev. Eugene L. Feagin officiating.

Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, Elevator Fund, 1005 Asbury Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29209.

Charles C. Daniels Sr.
Charles Covert Daniels Sr., 72, husband of Betty Jane White Daniels, died Tuesday, September 10, 2002, in Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born December 16, 1929, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late William “Willie” Daniels and the late Janie M. Daniels. He attended schools in Alcolu, and was a 1947 graduate of Manning High School. Mr. Daniels opened Daniels Equipment Company in Manning in 1957 with his brother, Buck Daniels. As an Allis-Chalmers and Toro dealer, he received numerous achievement awards for sales. He was honored with the Summit Club Dealer Award by Toro, and was a member for over 30 years in the Carolina Power Equipment Association. He sold the first Gleaner rotary combine in Clarendon County. He was a member of Manning United Methodist Church, served in the National Guard, was past president of the Manning Jaycees, and served for 26 years as a member and 12 years as chairman of the DSS Board for Clarendon County. In June of 2001, he and Mrs. Daniels celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning are his daughter, Deborah Russ and husband, Tim, of Sumter; two sons, Charles Covert Daniels Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Alcolu and John Kenneth Daniels and wife, Angela, of Orangeburg; a sister, Ruth D. Land of Conway; two brothers, Harry Daniels of Alcolu and Oliver Daniels of Lexington; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Buck Daniels.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday in Manning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Debra Quilling officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Daniels, Wayne Phillips, Richard Taylor, Ryan Taylor, Randy Daniels and Mike Hodge.

Honorary pallbearers were J.C. Britton, Larry Williamson, Burgess Sprott, Archie Craft, Jim Gittins, Bill Fenters, Dr. Billy Clowney, Dr. Cesar Vivanco, Dr. Mark Crabbe, Ernest Johnston, J.G. Hodge, Glen Varn, John Denny and John Daniels.

Memorials may be made to The Tuomey Foundation, Jeanne C. Watson Oncology Center, 115 N. Sumter St., Suite 120, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Margaret W. DeVoe
Margaret Waterman DeVoe, 97, widow of Harry DeVoe Sr., died Thursday, September 12, 2002, at the Windsor Manor Nursing Home in Summerton.

Born in Providence, R.I., she was the daughter of Lewis Anthony Waterman and Katherine Minerva Utter. Her father was a graduate of Brown University and a lawyer, who twice ran for governor of Rhode Island on the Democratic ticket. Her mother was a graduate of Vassar College and was the first female member of the Providence School Board. She was responsible for instituting the school lunch program. Both her father and mother were Phi Beta Kappa.

Margaret DeVoe was a descendent of five Mayflower passengers in addition to most of the original founders of both Providence and Newport including Robert Williams and Richard Waterman. Her Huguenot ancestor, Gabriel Bernon of LaRochelle, France, was a principle founder of the first three Episcopal Churches in Rhode Island and is buried beneath the alter of the Episcopal Cathedral in Providence. The first church founded, Old Narragansett, located n Wickford, R.I. is the oldest standing Episcopal Church north of Virginia being built in 1705.

She was a cum laude graduate of the Woman’s College of Brown University and also attended Smith College. She was one of the original “cancer survivors.” She contracted this deadly disease in 1961, and was given less than six months to live. Foregoing an intrusive operation, she underwent an intensive cobalt regiment, in addition to radiation, needle implants, and so called “miracle drugs.” She was a member of the DAR, the Order of Founders and Patriots, and a number of various civic organizations in Rhode Island.

Survivors include twin children, Harry L. DeVoe Jr. of New Zion and Margaret D. Gidley of Providence, R.I.,; four grandsons, Ryan Woods DeVoe, Leslie Waterman DeVoe, David Waterman Gidley, and Thomas Edwin Gidley; three great grandsons , Christian Scott DeVoe, Jordan Woods DeVoe, and Jonathan DeVoe; and a great-great grandson.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Epps DeVoe, who died in 1989.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Central Congregational Church, Angell St. Providence, R.I.

A private burial followed in the Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.

Memorials may be made to the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, 222 Richmond St., Providence, R.I. 02903.

Rosanne F. Haselden
Kingstree - Rosanne Fields Haselden, 86, widow of Charles Emerson Haselden, died Sunday, September 8, 2002 in a Florence hospital.

Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Wade Hampton Fields and Mrs. Mamie Huggins Fields. A former resident of Florence, Mrs. Haselden had made her home in Kingstree for the past five years. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Florence, and for the last five years had attended Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha A. Yarborough of Manning and Mary Wade (Archie) Ward of Kingstree; one son, William Wade (Sharon) Haselden of Summerville; and five grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday in the Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Elouise H. Long
Elouise Hilton Long, 89, widow of Clifton Long, died Wednesday, September 11, 2002, at her home in Manning.

Born October 20, 1912, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Hilton and Carrie Rhames Hilton. She was a 1930 graduate of Manning Training School. She joined Ebenezer Baptist Church in her youth before moving to New York, where she joined Bethel Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and member of both the missionary society and Noon Day Prayer Service. She returned to Manning in 1989 and reunited her membership with Ebenezer Baptist Church where she served on the missionary society.

Survivors include two sons, John Long and his wife, Alice, and Gregory Long of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Frank Hilton and his wife, Daisy of Manning; a brother-in-law, William Penn “W.P.” Harrison of Manning; a sister, Lerlene Hunt and her husband, J.B., of Orangeburg; a grandson, Eric Long of Brooklyn; a great-granddaughter, Keasia Long of Orlando, Fla.; and two goddaughters, Lynn Robinson of Pennsylvania and Pamela Stukes of New Jersey.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on Dinkins Street with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed Friday in Calverton Cemetery in Calverton Long Island, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Missionary society, c/o Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 105 Dinkins St. Manning, S.C. 29102.

Ruby Lee B. Pompey
Sumter - Ruby Lee Benbow Pompey, 77, widow of Henry Seth Pompey, died Monday, September 9, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 1, 1925, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late W.O. Benbow and Catherine Wright Benbow. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined Society Hill AME Church. After marriage, she joined Pine Grove AME Church where she served on the missionary society and as class leader.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra D. Pompey of the home; two sisters, Ernestine Boykins of Brooklyn N.Y., and Bertie Archer of Temple Hill, Md.; and a grandson, Demetrius Pompey of the home.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, James, Hallie Q., Eddie, Evans, Ulysses, and Quincy; a sister, Pernell; and four stepsisters.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Grove AME Church with the Rev. Francis T. Gathers, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Men of the church served as pallbearers.

Missionaries of the church served as floral bearers.

Edna Earl G. Stone
Edna Earl Geddings Stone, 86, widow of Roy Stone, died Tuesday, September 10, 2002, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born April 29, 1916, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Harmon M. and Ida Jane Wise Geddings. She was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church, and was first married to the late Moultrie Galloway.

Survivors include two sons, Pete Galloway and wife, Betty, of Manning and Henry Robert “Robbie” Stone and wife, Cindy, of Sumter; four sisters, Mattie Galloway of Manning, Marion Galloway of Sumter, Betty Cornman and Bertie Robinson of Warner Robbins, Ga.; a brother, H.M. Geddings of Manning; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Henry Robert “Bobby” Galloway and a grandson, Lee Galloway.

Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Bennie Turner officiated.

Pallbearers were Timmy Galloway, Ric Johnson, Harmie Geddings, Shawn Stone, Robert Stone and Bobby Snowden. Honorary pallbearer was Dennis Reynolds.

Memorials may be made to the Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 915, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Home Branch Baptist Church, 1667 Stone Road, Manning.

Charles N. Thames
Charles Nelson Thames, 62, died Monday, September 16, 2002 at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born September 5, 1940, in Manning, he was the son of the late Charlie C. and Madeline Shope Thames. He was a retired gas station operator, a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a member of Woodmen of the World.

Survivors include a son, Charles N. “Chuck” Thames Jr. of Sumter; two sisters, Grace T. Serena of Hendersonville, N.C. and Ruth Nickerson of Washington, Missouri.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home. The Rev. Stephen Bowe officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Truman Jordan, Rubin Hardy, Dickie Thompson, Buck Hardy, Eddie McCathern, and Charlie Miller.
