Henry B. Cave
Columbia - Henry Benjamin “Benny” Cave, 53, former husband of Julie Cave, died Wednesday, September 25, 2002.

Born January 28, 1949, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Ben Cave of Sumter and Barbara Pearson Cave of Columbia. He was a graduate of Mayewood High School and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include a son, Robert B. Cave of Sumter; two daughters, Deela R. Cave and Lisa L. Wilkerson of Sumter; two brothers, Tommy and Ronald Cave of Columbia; and a sister, Jean Mincey of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Cave and a grandmother, Daisy Cave.

A private burial was held in the Florence National Cemetery.

Charles N. Thames
Charles Nelson Thames, 62, died Monday, September 16, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born September 5, 1940, in Manning, he was the son of the late Charlie C. and Madeline Shope Thames.

He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a member of Woodmen of the World. He was a retired gas station operator.

Survivors include a son, Charles N. “Chuck” Thames Jr. of Sumter; and two sisters, Grace T. Serena of Hendersonville, N.C., and Ruth Nickerson of Washington, Mo.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Bowe officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Truman Jordan, Rubin Hardy, Dickie Thompson, Buck Hardy, Eddie McCathern and Charlie Miller served as pallbearers.

Dora S. James
Greeleyville - Dora Lee Simon James, 54, wife of Isaac James Jr., died Friday, September 20, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 12, 1947, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Manning Simon and Virginia Fulton Simon. She attended Clarendon County public schools.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Alexander Simon and his wife, Barbara, and John E. James of Lancaster, Pa.; two daughters, Courtney James of the home and Pamela James of Manning; two sisters, Laura Simon of Manning and Neomi Simon of New York City; a brother, Nathaniel Patricia Robinson of Greeleyville; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Summerton Funeral Service with Johnny Gillam, pastor, officiating, assisted by Naomi Georgia, pastor.

Burial followed in Fourth Cross Road Baptist Church Cemetery.

Loretta Hicks
Loretta “Retta” Hicks, 35, died Monday, September 16, 2002, at 916 McDowell St., Red Hill Community of Manning.

Born Nov. 29, 1966, in the Hallietown section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Lucille Cobia Hicks and the late Jessie Thomas Hicks. she was reared by her maternal grandparents, Ella Jane “Missy” Hicks and the late Jessie “Mossie” Hicks. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Bethel AME Church.

Survivors besides her mother include her maternal grandmother, Ella Jane Hicks; a brother, Ricky Hicks and his wife, Michelle, of Shaw Air Force Base; two sisters, Jessie Mae Hicks of Charlotte and Twanda Hicks of Philadelphia; and a friend, Jewel Blanding.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the memorial chapel of Samuels Funeral Home with the Rev. Alfred Heyward, pastor of St. James AME Church, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Evelyn Dukes, Mattie Mouzon and Deloris Gerow.

Burial followed in Bethel AME Church Cemetery.

Men of the church served as pallbearers.

Ladies of the church served as floral bearers.

Henry M. Green
Columbia - Henry Mason Green, widower of Amanda King Green, died Thursday, September 19, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 18, 1920, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Aaron Sr. and Rosa Johnson Green. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was raised in a loving Christian home. He became a member of Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton, where he served on the choir for numerous years. He received the church’s “Father of the Year 2000” plaque. He served his country in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two sons, Harry Green Jr. and his wife, Patricia, and Henry Green of Columbia; four daughters, Lucile Glanton, Daisy Burroughs and her husband, Larry, Janie Sims and her husband, Eburrell, and Eva Pough and her husband, Calvin, of Columbia; a brother, Aaron Green Jr. and his wife, Sarah, of Manning; two sisters, Lucile Dowd of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary Johnson of Boston, Mass.; and 18 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary Green Drake; a son-in-law, Nelson Drake; and two brothers, Junious Green and Moses Green.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton, with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Malvola H. Evans
Malvola Harvin Evans, 78, widow of John Earl Evans, died Saturday, September 14, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Aug. 5, 1924, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Sam Weston Harvin and Mary Frierson Harvin. She received her education from Reeseville Community School in Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church. She later moved to Bridgeport, Conn., for 35 years, where she joined Mt. Airy Baptist Church. After returning home, she rejoined Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member.

Survivors include two sons, Davis Harvin and his wife, Marol, of Sumter and Willie Lee Evans of Manning; three daughters, Bertha Canty and her husband, Robert, of Paxville, Rosa Lee Harvin and Mary Helen Hardy and her husband, Milton, of Bridgeport; a sister, Robertha Harvin of Bridgeport; and 16 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, John, Chester, Jerry, James, Daniel and Isiah Harvin; and four sisters, Ethel Harvin, Elease Spain, Helen Spain and Sally Gamble.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis C. Brook, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Johnathan Anderson, evangelist Laura White and the Rev. Sam T. Spain Sr.

Burial followed in Reeseville AME Church Cemetery, Alcolu.

Men of the church and friends of the family served as pallbearers.

Ladies of the church and friends of the family served as pallbearers and floral bearers.

Willis F. Walker
Willis Franklin Walker, 80, died Sunday, September 15, 2002 at his home in Summerton.

Born February 22, 1922, in Happy, Texas, he was the son of the late George Beard Walker and the late Mary Annie Wakefield Walker. He was a retired contract painter, and a WWII U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include a daughter, Sherri Nyland of Dennison, Texas; two sons, Charles Walker of Ontario, Canada and Wakefield Walker of Oregon; a brother, Wakefield Walker of Mesa, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Melvin and Pete Walker.

Private family services were held at a later day.

Stoley Waiters Jr.
Stoley “Coolie” Waiters Jr., 54, husband of Lucille Bradford Waiters, died Sunday, September 8, 2002, in Clarendon County.

Born September 7, 1948, in Sumter County, he was the son of Eva Mae Jackson Waiters and the late Stoley Waiters Sr. He was a member of Willow Grove AME Church. He was employed for more than 20 years with Sloan Construction Co. and Rea Construction Co. He had a love for cars and racing and named his 1968 Nova race car “Big Blue.”

Survivors include four sons, Stoley Waiters III of Hanau, Germany, Delvin Waiters and Adrian Waiters of Horatio, and Damien Waiters of Sumter; four daughters, Synthia Scipio and Celora Buggs of Columbia and LaShonda and LaTonya Nixon of Dalzell; three brothers, Dewey Spencer, Thornton and Arnie Waiters of Horatio; three sisters, Virginia Collier of Dalzell and Deloris and Tempie Waiters of Horatio; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Jackson and his father-in-law, Robert Bradford.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Willow Grove AME Church with the Rev. Antonio M. Bonner officiating.

Burial followed in Willow Grove Church cemetery.

Friends of the family served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Lurena Richardson Cochran
Columbia - Lurena Richardson Cochran, of 4305 Highland Park Drive, Columbia, formerly of Manning, died Saturday, September 28, 2002. Plans will be announced by Trezevant Funeral Home.

Arthur Costello
Kilmarnock - Arthur “Art” Costello, 87, formerly of Strasburg, Va., died September 21, 2002.

Born in Valcluse, Va. on May 23, 1915, he was the son of Mary Ellen and John Robert Costello. He was the youngest of 12 children. He retired in 1980, after 30 years, from Service Tire & Battery Co. in Front Royal, Va.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lillie Lichliter Costello; a daughter, Mary Ann Crane of the home; a son, Glenn Costello of Manning; a sister, Effie Kilmer of Martinsburg, W.V.; five grandsons; and four great- grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at Kilmarnock Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Association or the Music Department at Kilmarnock Baptist Church.

Donald E. Dawson
Miami - Donald Eugene Dawson, 53, husband of Theresa James Dawson of Miami, Fla., died Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at a local hospital in Miami.

Formerly of Summerton, he was the son-in-law of Esther Mae James.

Services were held at noon on Saturday, September 21, 2002, at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Miami.
