Rena C. Hilton
Rena Mae Conyers Hilton, 55, widow of Burgess “Snap” Hilton, died Friday, November 1, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 7, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Luther Conyers and Annie Mae Rogers Conyers. She was educated in Clarendon County public schools and a member of Mt. Carmel Freewill Baptist Church of Manning.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Conyers of Bridgeport, Conn.; three brothers, Frank Conyers and his wife, Martha, of Manning, Alex Conyers of Columbia and Lester Conyers and his wife, Sandra, of Skokie, Ill.; two sisters, Janie Mae Hilton and her husband, James, of Akron, Ohio, and Virginia Conyers of Manning; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Regina Hilton.

Services were held at noon Tuesday at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church Street, Manning, with the Rev. Fred T. Snider officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Milford Gibson
Sumter - Milford “Mickey” Gibson, 80, widower of Lillie Gue Gibson, died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at the Dorn Veteran Administration Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Coeburn, Va., he was the son of the late Pannell Gibson and the late Myrtle Smith Gibson. He was a retired security guard with Security Management and served in the United States Army during World War II.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Gibson of Frederick, Md., Brenda Prescott of Sumter and Denise Gibson of Lancaster; one twin brother, Joe Gibson of Norton, Va.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Hudson officiating.

Burial followed in the Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Sumter Chapter, P.O. Box 321 Sumter, S.C. 29151.

Eva D. Frazier
Eva D. Frazier, 97, widow of Roosevelt Frazier, died Friday, October 25, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.

Born Feb. 9, 1905, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ida Dingle. She attended school in the Jordan community. She was a member of Saint Matthews Missionary Baptist Church, where she was the mother of the church and a member of the senior missionary society.

Survivors include a son, Roosevelt Frazier Jr. of Mullen; two daughters, Martha Frazier and Glennie Frazier of Jersey City, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Herman, Russell and Acdore Frazier.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Saint Matthews Missionary Baptist Church, S.C. 260, Jordan community, Manning, with the Rev. Sam H. Miller, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Eddie Lesiane, O’Donald Dingle and Cokley Richburg.

Burial followed in the State Cemetery, Jordan community.

Iliene B. Rowe
Iliene Bagnal Rowe, 90, widow of Franklin Olin Rowe Sr., died Tuesday, October 22, 2002, in National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born July 25, 1912, in Timmonsville, she was the daughter of the late John Belton Bagnal and the late Maria Harrell Bagnal. She was a 1929 graduate of Sumter High School, where she was in the Glee Club and Orchestra, a graduate of Business School in 1931, and IAS 1962. She was a retired accountant, and became the first licensed female public accountant in Clarendon County on Feb. 9, 1970. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Board, past Trustee, Secretary, Cantey-Lanham Circle 1974 to 1987; a charter member and secretary of Summerton OES #224 from 1955-59; secretary, School of Instruction in Sumter from 1957-58; and Secretary’s Breakfast Association from 1955-59. She was v. pres. 1956, pres. 1957, and historian 1962-present of The Bagnal Clan; historian 1974-present of The Rowe Clan; S.C. Association of Public Accountants 1963 to present, Scholarship Committee 1983-91; Children of the Confederacy 1921, U.D.C. Dick Anderson Chapter DAR, Thomas Sumter’s Home Chapter; charter member and treasurer of Elizabeth Peyre Richardson Manning Chapter DAR; charter member of Clarendon Business and Professional Women’s Club; Clarendon Historical Society; charter member and treasurer of The Willie Dingle Memorial Educational Fund; clerk in Clarendon County’s First Acreage Reduction Office (Now ASCS).

Survivors include a daughter, Helen R. Ellis and husband, Don, of Manning; a son, Franklin Olin Rowe Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Chapin; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Summerton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Carolyn Malphrus and Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in St. Paul Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Cleo L. Ridgeway
Cleo Lightsey Ridgeway, 66, wife of H. Cleveland Ridgeway, died Sunday, October 27, 2002, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born March 1, 1936, in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Herman B. Lightsey Sr. and the late Tinnie Mason Lightsey. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, Gary Ridgeway and wife, Sharon, of Manning; a daughter, Kathy Brunson of Alcolu; three brothers, Tommy Lightsey of Allendale, John Gerald Lightsey of San Antonio, Texas and Herman B. Lightsey Jr. of Irmo; a sister, Betty Jane Jeffcoat of Hampton; and three grandchildren, Wesley Brunson, Kelsey Brunson and Carmen Ridgeway.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. George Gain, Fred Treaster and Tommy Conway officiating.

Burial followed in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Wayne Pelfrey, Rick Myers, Ricky Ridgeway, Randy Bullard, Stanley Hodge, Wesley Brunson and Chris Ridgeway.

Memorials may be made to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 415, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Clice Mae C. Davis
Clice Mae Corbett Davis, 64, wife of Richard Marion Davis, died Monday, October 28, 2002, at her home in Summerton.

Born Feb. 3, 1938, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Charles Benjamin “Mood” Corbett and the late Vivian Newman Corbett. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of Summerton; a son, Richard M. “Ricky” Davis Jr. of Manning; a daughter, Linda Davis of Summerton; a sister, Judy Marie Dykes of Statesboro, Ga.; and a grandson, Jerry Lane Coker Jr.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Mood Corbett Jr.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Turner officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Davis, Steve Taylor, Billy Bowers, Ervin Davis, Terry Bradshaw and Milton Ivie.

Memorials may be made to Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 915, Manning, S.C. 29102

John T. Cleary
John Thomas Cleary, 71, husband of Judith Green Cleary, died Friday, October 18, 2002, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 15, 1930, in Nashua, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late James Harold Cleary and the late Marguerite Leary Cleary. He was a U. S. Army veteran, graduate of the University of Massachusetts, owner and past president of Cleary and Gosselin Insurance Agency in Groton, past member of Sacred Heart Parish in Groton, Ma., and past president of the Groton Pepperell Rotary Club in Groton.

Survivors besides his wife of Wyboo Plantation, Manning, are two daughters, Jacqueline Cleary Beach of Deale, Maryland and Margaret Crowder of Merritt Island, Fla.; two stepsons, Shawn Powell of Leominster, Ma., and Todd Powell of Peterborough, N.H.; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Gray of Edinburg, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and five step grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Wyboo Community Center, Manning.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Memorial Hospital EMS, P.O. Box 550, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Victor Johnson
Victor Johnson, 84, widower of Frizal Dais Johnson, died Tuesday, October 29, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Born Oct. 18, 1918, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Theodore and Easter Garrett Johnson. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities until his health failed. He served as a former president of the trustee board, a member of the gospel choir, and as president of the cemetery committee. He retired in 1980 from Santee Electric as a heavy duty machine operator with more than 30 years of service. During his employment there, he received a number of awards for outstanding job performance. His civic involvement included the YMCA, the Summerton Masonic Lodge No. 366, and Eastern Star No. 304.

Survivors include six sons, Deacon Victor Johnson and his wife, Junie, of Albans, N.Y., Deacon Ben Johnson and his wife, Comilla, and Jacob Johnson of Summerton, Deacon Joe Johnson and his wife, Ida, of White Plains, N.Y., Deacon John Johnson and his wife, Ernell, of Cambridge, Md., and Jerry Johnson and his wife, Pearl Rose, of Columbia; three daughters, Mattie Hilton and her husband, the Rev. Pinckney, of Miami, Mary Whaley and her husband, George, of Orangeburg, and Emma Mellerson and her husband, Willie, of Sumter; two brothers, Evans Johnson of Long Island, N.Y., and M.C. Johnson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; six sisters, Pearl Brunson of Rocky Point, N.C., Gertrude Collins, Eva Laws and Virginia Thomas of Wilmington, N.C., Mary Dennis of Summerton and Thelma Shanchez of Patterson, N.J.; two children whom he raised as his own, Herbert Johnson of White Plains and Tracy Johnson of Miami; 29 grandchildren; and 54 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, a daughter and a grandson.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, and David Lawson, eulogist, officiating, assisted by evangelist Ernestine Oliver, and the Revs. Dr. Amos Gourdine, Albert Thompson, Pinckney Hilton and Richard Robinson.

Burial followed in Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Davis Crossroads.

Summerton Masonic Lodge No. 366 served as pallbearers.

Order of the Eastern Star No. 304 served as floral bearers.

Rebecca B. Rhodes
Mooresville, N.C. - Rebecca ‘Boye’ Blythe Rhodes, 95, died Thursday, October 24, 2002, at Genesis Eldercare, Mooresville.

Born on Nov. 16, 1906, in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Alice Dunn Blythe. She was raised in Huntersville and upon graduation from high school, attended Queens College in Charlotte, N.C., where she studied music.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Culberson and husband, ‘Bedo’, Harriet Stewart and husband, Glenn, of Mooresville, and Betty Griffin of Alcolu; a son, Willis Rhodes and wife, Josie, of Mooresville; two brothers, Edwin M. Blythe and Harry B. Blythe, of Huntersville; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Rhodes; a son-in-law, Johnny Griffin; a sister, Elizabeth Blythe Smith; and two brothers, William N. Blythe and James H. Blythe.

Services were held on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Mooresville, N.C.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Carolina Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, N.C. 28215 or First Presbyterian Church Restoration Fund, 249 W. McLelland Ave., Mooresville, N.C. 28115.
