Marilyn Morgan

COLUMBIA — A memorial service celebrating the life of Marilyn Morgan will be held at Kathwood Baptist Church, 4900 Trenholm Road, on Friday, December 10, 2004 at 3 p.m. The family will receive guests after the service in the church narthex.

Ms. Morgan died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 after an extended illness. She was born in Dallas, Texas , the daughter of Joyce Henslee Morgan and the late William J. Morgan. She is survived by her mother, her aunt Carolee Patton, and cousins.

Ms. Morgan was a career French teacher. She was retired from Irmo High School where she served as Foreign Language Department Head. She conducted many tours to France for her students and later for adults as well. She was teaching French at Midlands Technical College and supervising USC foreign language student teachers at the time of her death.

She was a graduate of Dreher High School, Southern Methodist University, and received her Masters Degree in French from Emory University.

Ms. Morgan served as a docent at the Columbia Museum of Art, where she established an endowment for the Children’s Education Fund.

She served as a Chi Omega Sorority Advisor at USC over the years, and recently served as President of the House Corporation, which was in charge of building the new sorority house where a fountain was dedicated in her honor.

She was a member of Kathwood Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Crape Myrtle Garden Club.

It is suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marilyn Morgan French Scholarship Fund at Irmo High School, 6671 St. Andrews Road, Irmo, S.C. 29063, to the Marilyn Morgan Education Fund at the Columbia Art Museum, P.O. Box 2068, Columbia, S.C. 29202, or to the Marilyn Morgan Memorial Scholarship, to be established, c/o Chi Omega Foundation, 3395 Player Club Parkway, Memphis, TN 38125.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Tommie Kinard

PROSPERITY — Services for Tommie Lee Long Kinard will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family is at the residence of Ernestine Derrick Bedenbaugh and will receive friends Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church Bereavement Fund, 3124 Bachman Chapel Road, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Mrs. Kinard, 97, widow of John Ernest Kinard, died December 8, 2004. Born in Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Ebenezer and Corrie Elvie Gruber Long. She was a former employee of Newberry Steam Laundry and retired as the lunchroom operator at Prosperity Elementary School. Mrs. Kinard was a member of Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, William Luther and Connie Kinard and James Harold and Sadie Rae Kinard of Prosperity; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and J.D. Crumpton, Ernestine Derrick Bedenbaugh, Pauline and Wayne Harmon, all of Prosperity, Sudie Mae and Perry Livingston of Pomaria; sisters, Mattie Mae L. Wicker of Prosperity, Laura L. Monts of West Columbia; sister-in-law, Annie Mae K. Bobb of Prosperity; 17 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 16 great-greatgrandchildren, 1 stepgrandchild and 7 stepgreat-grandchildren. Mrs. Kinard was predeceased by a son, John Glenn Kinard; brothers, George “Mid” Long and Ira B. Long; sisters, Geneva L.C. Hendrix, Mary L. Turner, Nancy L. Cromer and Eugenia Long.

Phillip Arnett

BARNWELL — Phillip B. (Cap) Arnett, 98, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at his residence.

Born in Big Moses, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas M. and Mary Martha Spencer Arnett. He had retired with 37 years service from E.I. DuPont, beginning at the Bells W.Va. plant and ending at the Savannah River Plant, Barnwell, SC. He was an avid golfer who shot his age or below 15 times. He was a fifty year member of the Harmony #17 Masonic Lodge of Barnwell, SC, a fifty year member of the Scottish Rite, fifty year member of the Omar Shrine Temple and a member of the El Bab Shrine Club of Barnwell, SC.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 2004, at Mole Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hank Avent officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell Co. Memorial Cemetery at the Airport. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the hour of service on Saturday. Memorial may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital of Greenville, SC.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Godejohn Arnett of Barnwell, SC; daughters, Peggy (Sid) Caillavet of Orange, Tex., Phyllis A. Pagett of Barnwell, SC, Sue (Jim) Quast of Garberville, Calif.; stepdaughters, Faye (Don) Hughes of Romayor, Tex., Jenny (Ted) Mayo of Barnwell, SC; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mabel M. Arnett and a daughter, Wanda L. Enmon.

Homer Collins

ELGIN — Memorial services for Homer Collins, 57, will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 11, 2004. from 4-6 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kershaw County, 2001 W. DeKalb St., Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Collins died Wednesday, December 8, 2004. Born in Isom, Kentucky, he was the son of Hazel Collins and the late Luther Collins. He was a retired attorney and also retired as a Sgt. First Class from the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran. Mr. Collins was a Mason and Shriner and a member of Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Shaw Collins of Elgin; mother of Isom, Ky.; brother, Marvin Collins of Louisville, Ky.; sisters, Mate Bates of Louisville, Ky., Wilma Putnum and Phyllis Martin, both of Isom, Ky.

James Amick

COLUMBIA — Memorial services for James E. Amick, 36, of Columbia, will be held today, December 10, at 6 PM at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.

Mr. Amick died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004. Born in Columbia, he was the son of Doris Jane Swittenburg Amick and the late James Robert Amick.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Doris Amick of Columbia; one daughter, Amanda Amick; one son, Michael Amick, both of Ridge Springs; and one sister, Debbie Branham of Elgin.

COLUMBIA — Services for Joyce Elaine Edmond, 2 p.m. Saturday at Park Street Church of Christ; burial: Swansea Cemetery; visitation is 7-8 tonight Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home. Born in Columbia to Daniel and Rosa Jeffcoat Edmond, she died Dec. 4, 2004. Surviving: daughter, Chantrese Goodwin; siblings, Patricia Goodlet, Clementine McLeod, Barbara Richardson, Rosetta Butler, James, Wayne Edmond.

Furman Harbeson

ST. GEORGE — Furman Eugene Harbeson, 83, of 2800 Wire Road, died at his residence Wednesday, December 8, 2004. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Saturday at the Grover United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Ritter officiating. Burial will follow in the Murray Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday, December 10 at Bryant Funeral Home. Pallbearers are: Ned Willis, Sammy Reeves, Hughey Reeves, Eric Meece, Jason Klappauf, Donnie Byrd and Bryan Reeves.

Furman Harbeson was born March 21, 1921, in Grover, SC, a son of the late Leon Murray Harbeson and Angie Melissa Weeks. He worked as a Railroad Switchman for Giant Cement Plant, a Merchant Marine during World War II, a member of the American Legion and was a member of the Grover United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Infinger Harbeson of St. George; one son, Randall G. (Kimberly) Harbeson; two daughters, Jean (John) Caylor of St. George and Deborah (Kenneth) Femrite of Hanibal, MO; one sister, Lavern H. Reeves of Charleston; seven grandchildren, Andrew Femrite, Joshua Harbeson, Timothy Collier, Karsten Femrite, Candace Klappauf, Summer Starr and Savannah Starr; three great-grandchildren, Timothy Jacob Collier, Cole Nathaniel Klappauf and Maggie Michelle Klappauf.

Tillman Evans Sr.

WINNSBORO — Funeral services for Tillman Henry Evans Sr. will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 2004, at Pope Funeral Home, conducted by Bishop Blake Alder. Burial will follow in Fairfield Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Evans, 83, died Thursday, December 9, 2004. Born in Lugoff, S.C., Jan. 30, 1921, he was the son of the late Emanuel F. and Nannie Reynolds Evans Jr.

Mr. Evans had retired as a Fire Warden with the S.C. Commission of Forestry, had served his country during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of Ridgeway Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was a member of the Winnsboro Masonic Lodge #11 of A.F.M.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Roberts Evans of the home; sons, Ronald Evans of Winnsboro and Steve Evans of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Cathy E. Reid of Winnsboro; three sisters, Mildred Lewis and Sallie Pearl Harsey and Betty Jeffcoat of Columbia and several grandchildren. Mr. Evans was predeceased by a son, Tillman Henry Evans Jr.

Tossie Lee

HARTSVILLE — Graveside services for Tossie Grantham Lee, 87, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Westview Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation is Friday 6-8 p.m. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Colon and Betsy Polson Grantham. Surviving: sons: Hyman and Charles Lee, Hartsville; Robert Lee, Rock Hill; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.

Roosevelt Hills

HOPKINS — Funeral services for Roosevelt Byrd Hills of 1824 Horrell Hill Road will be held 12:00 P.M. Saturday, December 11, 2004 at Zion Benevolent Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service. Visitation will be held Friday, December 10, 2004, 3-9 P.M. at the funeral home.

J.P. Holley Funeral Home, Garners Ferry Road Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hills died Monday, December 6, 2004. Born in Darlington County he was the son of Ole Bell Randolph McDaniel and the late Willie Byrd and stepson of the late Boyd McDaniel He was a member of Zion Benevolent Baptist Church and a retired truck driver.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Bennett Hills; mother; sons, Christopher Byrd, David Hills; stepson, Travis Bennett; stepdaughters, Danielle Bennett, Shannon Thompson; brothers, Reverend Boyd McDaniels, II, Leon McDaniel, Joseph McDaniel, Terry McDaniel, Theodore McDaniel, Robert McDaniel, Lee S. McDaniel, Reverend James McDaniel, Malcolm Byrd; sisters, Evelyn M. Sumter, Peggy Wynn, Victoria Beard, Odessa Paulin, Ernestine B. DePugh, Brenda B. Lowery; eight grandchildren. Mr. Hills was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy A. Hills; brother, Ronald Byrd; sisters, Sally McDaniel, Verna B. Williams.
