Lunette S. Robinson
Lunette Sartor Robinson, 101, widow of Elder Marcellus F. Robinson, died Sunday, October 27, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 11, 1901, she was the daughter of the late Rev. William and Ida Sartor. She attended the public schools of Newberry and Greenwood counties. She attended Allen University and received a bachelor of science degree from Morris College. She began teaching, which spanned more than 40 years in the public schools of Newberry, Conway and Sumter. Her affiliations were supervisor of Young People’s Department, Sunday school superintendent, class leader, chairperson of Area No. 3 of the Minister’s Wives Alliance, second vice president and treasurer of the Northeast Conference Branch Missionary Society, delegate to the Women’s Missionary Quadrennial for four consecutive times, life member of the Women’s Missionary Society, and supervisor of the Sumter District Missionary Society for 18 years.

Prior to her illness, she became a member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church, where she served as first vice president of the Missionary Society for eight years, a member of the Stewardess Board No. 3, and a recipient of the Mother of the Year Award.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie F. Saunders and her husband, Ronald, of Manning, and Ruth Walker of Gary, Ind.; a brother, Tom Sartor of Newberry; a sister, Willie Hearns of Manning; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church in Sumter with the Rev. Juenarrl Keith, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elders R.L. McCants, John Gillison, Charles Graves, W.J. Nelson, Alonza Middleton, and the Revs. George P. Windley Sr. and S.R. Miott.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Shirley R. Robinson
Shirley Ruth Robinson, 65, widow of Marion Nathaniel Robinson, died Friday, October 25, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born July 18, 1937, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late William “Bill” Gibson Sr. and Susie Jackson Gibson. She attended Scott’s Branch High School. After moving to New York, she joined First AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the choir. She returned to South Carolina, where she rejoined Liberty Hill AME Church.

Survivors include a son, Marion Robinson of High Point, N.C.; three daughters, Clarissa and Shakima Robinson of the home, and Diane Robinson of Norfolk, Va.; four brothers, William “Bill” Gibson Jr. of Manning, Thomas Gibson of Bronx, N.Y., John Bennett of Florida and Haywood Bennett of Richmond, Va.; eight sisters, Carolyn Ragin and Miriam Johnson of Summerton, Herline Alston of Pinewood, Julia Andrew of Brooklyn, N.Y., Susie Mae Oree of Bronx, Prophet Fran McFadden of Tucker, Ga., Daisy McFadden of Baltimore and Daisy Guess of Lehigh, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill AME Church, Liberty Hill Road, Summerton, with the Rev. Malachi Duncan, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Jerry N. Byrd
Jerry Neil Byrd, 64, died Monday, December 3, 2001.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in the Atlantic Ocean aboard the M/V Coastal Florida, leaving the dock on Dodge Island in Miami, Fla., under the direction of Captain Wayne Bethel.

Amos Conyers
Amos Conyers, 84, widower of Essie Mae McElveen Conyers, died Monday, November 4, 2002, in Hartsville.

Born March 18, 1919, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Junious and Rosena Amos Conyers. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Chapel AME Church. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include four sons, Allen and his wife, Marian, of Manning, Amos Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Columbia, Harrison and Junious Conyers of New York, N.Y.; three daughters, Inez Mickens and her husband, Frank, and Diane Ward and her husband, Charles, of New York, N.Y., and Eva Mae DuRunt and her husband, Ed, of Manning; a brother, Junious and his wife, Louise, of the Silver community, Manning; a sister, Lugena McLeod and her husband, James, of Manning; 26 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters; three sisters; and five brothers.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Chapel AME Church in Paxville, with the Rev. William Scott, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Holiday, Rev. J. Dais, and Rev. M. Hamilton.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Georgeann R. DeLair
Georgeann Raymond DeLair, 61, of 1152 Pocohantas Street, Manning, formerly of Walterboro, died Sunday, November 10, 2002, at the Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Sept. 27, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Julius and Vera Suggs Raymond. She was a member of the First Assembly of God and was twice married, first to the late Thomas Craven and then to the late Ross James DeLair.

Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn Hiers of Lodge; a son, Marvin DeLair of Manning; four sisters, Mary Hiers of Lodge, Lula Benton of Walterboro, and Helen Jones and Roberta Schmitt of Manning; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in the Beaufort National Cemetery, directed by The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel.

Willie H. James
Sumter - Willie Harrison James, husband of Deloris James, died Sunday, November 3, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 27, 1938, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Willie Mood James and Willie Mildred James. He attended Clarendon County public schools and Mulberry Baptist Church. In 1987, he retired from the Coca Cola Bottling Co. after 37 years of service. He was a mason of the Sumter Lodge.

Survivors besides his wife include two brothers, Leroy James of Sumter and Ronnie James of Allendale; and three sisters, Geneva Jones and her husband, J.C., Nell People and Patricia Wells and her husband, Elder Tommy of Sumter.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with Elder Tommy L. Wells officiating, assisted by the Rev. Tony Ford and the Rev. Reed.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Charles Johnson Jr.
Charles “Bubba” Johnson Jr., 74, widower of Mae Johnson, died Friday, November 1, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born Jan. 3, 1928, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Charles Johnson Sr. and Helen Blackwell Johnson. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He retired from Bronx Painting Corp. as a foreman after 32 years of service.

Survivors include two brothers, Thomas Johnson of Summerton and Eugene Johnson of New York City; and two sisters, Ethel M. Lewis of New York City and Bernice Guitard of Queens, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Johnson; and two sisters, Eliase Johnson and Charlotte Johnson.

Services were held at the George H. Weldon Funeral Home, New York.

Burial followed in Mount Holiness Cemetery, Butler, N.J.

Stephen King
Stephen “Jack” King, 63, husband of Martha Chatman King, died Friday, November 8, 2002, at Palmetto-Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Dec. 24, 1938, in the Wilson community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Warren King Sr. and Rhedus Dozier King. He graduated from Manning High School in 1957 and attended S.C. Area Trade School in Denmark, where he concentrated in auto mechanics. He served in the United States Army as a military policeman. He was a member of Williams Chapel Christian Church, where he served in various positions, including church steward, assistant Sunday school superintendent and trustee board member. In 1964, he started Stephen King Logging and in 1983, CarBonStep Inc. He retired in 1992.

Survivors besides his wife include three daughters, Carla King and Bonnie King of Manning, and Stephanie Trice and her husband, Justin, of Atlanta; a brother, Warren King Jr. and his wife, Mattie, of Manning; three grandchildren; an adopted sister, Thelma Dozier of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a caregiver, Alex Hunter of Manning.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elijah King and Churchill King; and a sister, Betty King.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Williams Chapel Christian Church, Greeleyville Hwy. 521 East in Manning with the Rev. Emmanuel Evans, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Dr. Emanuel Chatman, Sam Richardson and Charles Smith.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Nephews and cousins served as pallbearers.

Nieces and cousins served as floral bearers.

Ben Lewis
Sumter - John Benjamin “Ben” Lewis Sr., husband of Gloria Herlong Lewis, died Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late William Morgan Lewis and Anna Ruth Touchberry Lewis. He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and a retired residential designer. He was involved for a number of years in the building and designing of homes in Sumter. He served in the U.S. Navy for 43 months during World War II. He saw action in the Philippines engagement, Leyte Operation, Luzon, with the occupation forces in Japan and armed guard in the Pacific. He held the American Theater, European-African-Middle Eastern, Asiatic Pacific and Philippines Liberation ribbons, the Letter of Commendation, World War II Victory Medal and Bronze Star.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, John Benjamin “Rusty” Lewis Jr. and his wife, Peggy, of Sumter, and Lloyd Randolph “Randy” Lewis and his wife, Debra, of Eastover; a daughter, Denise Lewis Stanley and her husband, Stan, of Charlotte; two brothers, William M. Lewis and Edward T. Lewis of Sumter; three sisters, Mary Dunn, Ruth Reardon and Esther Reynolds of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Susan Lewis, Kelly Lewis, Brandon Lewis, Lindsey Lewis, Michael Lewis, Carson Stanley and Anna Stanley.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. LaRue Cook officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Dr. Lea Givens served as honorary pallbearer.

Memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 136 Poinsett Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Harold J. Morris
Harold James Morris, 51, died Thursday, November 7, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 24, 1951, in Manning, he was the son of Rosa Lee Servance Morris and the late Willie James Morris. He attended Manning Training High School and was a member of St. John Baptist Church and the Community All-stars Basketball Team. Prior to retirement, he was employed for more than 30 years with the Scott Jackson Farms.

Survivors besides his mother of Silver community include a son, Gregory Nelson of Silver; four brothers, Lee Morris and his wife, Geronia, Willie Morris, Larry Morris and his wife, Barbara, and Jackie Morris of Silver; and five sisters, Mamie Lloyd of Pinewood, Bertha Hardy, Margaret Morris and Brenda Morris of Silver, and Eliza J. Thames of Miami.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Morris and Johnny Morris.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Baptist Church in the Silver community with the Rev. C. Richburg, evangelist Elizabeth Richburg, and the Revs. J.H. Pringle, Donald Pugh and Henry Presley officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lee R. Rose
Lynchburg - Lee Ray “Bull” Rose, 49, died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born June 9, 1953, in Turbeville, he was the son of the late McSwain Rose and Willie Mae Smalls Rose. He attended Sumter County public schools. In his youth, he joined Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include six brothers, Darin Rose of Long Island, N.Y., Michael Rose and his wife, Mary, and Russell Rose and his wife, Sylvester, of Lynchburg, Danny Rose of Charlotte, John Rose and his wife, Janice, and Charles Rose of Philadelphia; and two sisters, Sharion Witherspoon and her husband, Robert, of Charlotte and Judy Cooper and her husband, James, of Gable.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, McNeil and Stanley Rose.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Turbeville, with the Elder Zander Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. James E. Alston and Carnell Hampton.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Nieces served as floral bearers.
