Rev. John H. Thigpen
Cades - Rev. John Hugh Thigpen, 75, died Saturday, November 9, 2002 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Rev. William Hughey and Bertha Corbett Thigpen. He was a retired mechanic and minister. He was a member of the South Carolina Pentecostal Conference, a member of Floyd’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and he helped with the mobile kitchen for the Disaster Relief USA Team with the Pentecostal Holiness Church of South Carolina. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheryl Thigpen of Cades and Phyllis Coward and her husband, Dale, of Coward; two sons, William D. Thigpen and his wife, Sondra, of New Zion and Johnny Thigpen and his wife, Jo, of Lake City; two sisters, Ruby Chandler of Olanta and Mary Lee Coker and her husband, Sherrill, of Sumter; five brothers, Willie Mack Thigpen and his wife, Dorothy, of Maxton, N.C., Rev. Delbert Thigpen and his wife, Dennie, of Manning, Charles S. Thigpen of Olanta, Donald Thigpen and Ernest Thigpen and his wife, Mary, of Bishopville; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Azalee Bennett Thigpen, who died December 5, 1999.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in the Floyd’s Chapel Pentecostal holiness Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Coastal Carolina Chapter, P.O. Box 80459, Charleston, S.C. 29416.

Fannie C. Williams
Fannie Conyers Williams, 71, widow of Moses Williams, died Thursday, October 31, 2002, at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Born Aug. 3, 1931, in the Spring Hill section of Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Robert Conyers Sr. and Easter Gibson Conyers. She was a 1951 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. In her youth, she joined Spring Hill AME Church, where she served as a member of the Y.P.D. She later moved to New York City, where she joined Calvary AME Church and served as a member of the missionary and stewardess boards. She retired in June 2000 from the New York Board of Education after 31 years of service.

Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Jones and her husband, Jeff, and Wanda Conyers of Brooklyn; a brother, James Conyers and his wife, Lueleatha, of Summerton; a sister, Henrietta Conyers of Brooklyn; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Spring Hill AME Church in the Davis Crossroad section of Clarendon County with the Rev. Phillip Mixon, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Alonzo Middleton, the Rev. Franklin McCants, and evangelist Elizabeth Wright.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Nieces served as floral bearers.

Leandre A. Bernier
Leandre A. “Lee” Bernier, 64, husband of Barbara Kayser Bernier, died Monday, November 11, 2002, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Feb. 26, 1938, in Waterbury, Conn., he was the son of the late Leandre and Jane Bernier. He was retired Director of Facilities for U.S. Airways, a graduate of the Citadel with a degree in Civil Engineering, a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Black Oak Hunting Club, and was of the Roman Catholic faith.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three sons, Rick Bernier and Mark Bernier of Falmouth, Maine, and Bruce Bernier of Charlotte, Vt.; a sister, Barbara Bernier of Vero Beach, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date in Maine.

Bernice Carolyn B. Dombrosky-Blainer
Sumter - Bernice Carolyn Brown Dombrosky-Blainer, wife of Gary William Blainer, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002, in Winder, Ga.

Born in Sumter, S.C., she was the daughter of the late James Baldwin and Annie Geneva Hatfield Brown. She was a retired personnel manager with V.B. Williams Furniture Co. in Sumter and was a member of First Southern Methodist Church of Sumter. She was President of Sumter Area Personnel Assn., Advisor to Clemson University, member of the S.C. National Guard Committee, Treasurer of Sumter Business & Professional Women’s Organization.

Survivors besides her husband of Tarentum, Pa., include a son, John A. Dombrosky Jr. and wife, Melody, of Garden City, S.C.; a daughter, Melody Lee Dombrosky Lanning and her husband, Jim, of Winder; four brothers, Cecil Woodrow Brown, Leland Edward Brown and James Baldwin Brown Jr. of Sumter and Dr. Alec Eldridge Brown of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Alene Brown Hawkins of Leesville, S.C. and Annie Lee Brown Marion of Columbia; and two grandchildren, Kathryn Ryan Lanning and James Whitney Lanning Jr.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John A. Dombrosky Sr; three brothers, James Willis Brown Sr., Raymond Eugene Brown, Carl B. Brown and Thomas F. Brown; and one sister, Kathleen Brown Parker.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Revs. Ellis Evans and Walter Proctor Jr. officiating.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were James Willis Brown, G. Raymond Brown, Stanley Brown, Leland E. Brown Jr., Kenneth Brown, Steve Brown, James Leon Marion II, Harry Brown, Phil Leventis, Bunt Wilson, Dr. Paul Randall Hawkins, J.D. Parker, Dr. Lea Givens, Dr. Billy Clowney, Dan Morrison, Mike DeHart and Drewry Penn.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Ln., Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to the First Southern Methodist Church, 321 Miller Rd. Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Eustus W. Colclough
Eustus Wear “Cokley” Colclough, 88, widower of Lillian Blackwell Colclough, died Friday, November 8, 2002, at Hopewell Health Care Center in Sumter.

Born Feb. 14, 1914, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Robert Colclough and Martha McCoy Colclough. He attended the Westminister Parochial School in Alcolu. In his youth, he joined Westminister Presbyterian Church, where he served on the choir, trustee, Deacon, and Usher Boards. He later moved to New York, where he joined Mt. Morris Presbyterian Church. There he served as an elder, usher, on the choir, church cook, sexton, and board member. He was a member of Holy Royal Art Masons, David Wells Chapter No. 39, and Red Hill Lodge No. 144. He received a certificate in Culinary Arts from the New York institute of Culinary Art.

Survivors include four sons, Eustus W. Colclough Jr., of Queens, N.Y., Aaron Colclough and his wife, Shirley, of Ownings, Md., Wallace Colclough and his wife, Jacquelyn, of Freeport, N.Y., and Windell Colclough of Alcolu; eight daughters, Julia Peterson of Manhattan, N.Y., Nonnie B. Perry and her husband, James, of Sumter, Josephine C. Broady and her husband, Clifton, of Jackson Heights, N.Y., Bertha A. Gadson and her husband, James, of Beaufort, Lillian D. Woods of Staten Island, N.Y., Shirley Fiqueroa and her husband, Ralph, of Farrockaway, N.C., Dorothea S. Elaine Colclough of Alcolu, and Ruth Armstrong of Queens, N.Y.; a brother, Harry Colclough of Alcolu; 46 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lillie Mae C. Kennedy; three brothers, Robert, Warren, and Major; and three sisters, Lurie, Sadie, and Mellie.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Westminister Presbyterian Church USA in Alcolu, with the Rev. William Jones, pastor, officiating, assisted by Dr. Franklin Colclough, Rev. Ernest Jackson, and Rev. Carnell Hampton.

Burial followed in Westminister Cemetery in Gable.

Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers.

Granddaughters and the Deacon Board served as floral bearers.

Billie L. McMasters
Billie Louise McMasters, 86, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002, at her residence in Florence, S.C.

Born March 1, 1916, in Mart, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Herman Gotleib Pinno and Minna Hoffman Pinno. She was the wife of the late Garth Harold McMasters. She was a Fashion Designer/Coordinator and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Order of Eastern Star and Cosmopolitan Club of Sumter, and the Pink Dogwood Garden Club of Summerton.

Survivors include two daughters, Madeline Sawyer and husband, Bill, of Florence, and Gretchen McMasters Schuster and husband, Thomas W., of Los Angeles, Ca.; two grandchildren, Gantt McMasters Sawyer and Honor Sawyer Bonds of Florence; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Benjamin Bonds of Florence; and a sister, Ella Marie Pinno Johnson of Midlothian, Texas.

Services were held on Friday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with the Revs. David Dinkins and Tom Pietila officiating.

Burial followed in Mount Hope Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, or McLeod Foundation, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, S.C. 29506.

Elizabeth O. Mathis
Elizabeth Odom Mathis, 80, widow of Ernest Kimbrow Mathis Sr., died Tuesday, November 12, 2002, in Lowman Home Nursing Center in White Rock, S.C.

Born Aug. 8, 1922, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Barney Belton Odom and the late Roberta Hodge Odom. She attended Newberry College and was a faithful member of Manning First Baptist Church where she was a longtime nursery worker and a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She operated a private Kindergarten in her home in Manning, worked for the Clarendon County Clerk of Court, and for many years worked in the Manning High School cafeteria. She attended a Wednesday morning Friendship-Prayer group. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Woodmen of the World, the Clemson Extension Club and the SAM Group in Sumter.

Survivors include two sons, Ernest K. Mathis Jr. and wife, Brenda Burke Mathis, of Irmo and C.B. Mathis and wife, Carolyn Haney Mathis, of Summerton; a daughter, Roberta Monts and husband, Billy, of Irmo; two brothers, Archie C. Odom of Florence and John Milton Odom of Manning; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert B. Odom.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday in Manning First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Sullivan officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Brian Mathis, Brad Mathis, C.B. Mathis II, Michael Mathis, William Monts and David Monts.

Honorary pallbearers were grandsons by marriage, David Haney, Ben Haney and Erik Miller.

Eunice G. Lackey
Eunice Geddings Lackey, 86, widow of George H. Lackey, died Saturday in Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Nov. 18, 1915, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late Charles Van Geddings and the late Odella Holiday Geddings. She was a retired LPN, and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Daniel G. Lackey of Manning; three daughters, Elizabeth L. Merritt, Loretta

Jo Ardis and Mary Melissa Harrington of Manning; two sisters, Vivian Campbell of Columbia and Eva Mac Bradsher of Paxville; 13 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, George H. Lackey Jr.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Anderson officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James A. Merritt Jr., Jamie Shayne Merritt, Robert Shearer, George H. Lackey, Zachary Merritt, Cecil Earle Oxendine and David Mullaney.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Steven C. Green
Pinewood - Steven Craig Green, 24, died Monday, November 11, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born July 28, 1978, in Manning, he was the son of the late James “Boss” Green and Frances Thomas Green, and a biological son of Mary Lee Mack and Junior Jones. He attended Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton. In his youth, he joined Mount Pleasant UME Church in Panola.

Survivors besides his biological parents of Manning include a daughter, Tonesha T. Shannon of Pinewood; six brothers, Alonza Green, James W. Mack Jr., Henry Mack and Reginald A. Mack of Manning, Anthony Glover of New York City and Nathan Green of Washington, D.C.; and five sisters, Roxann Richardson and her husband, Harrison, of Rimini, Patricia Green and her husband, Lester, of Pinewood, Felicia Green and Sharon Green of the home, and Sarah E. Mack of Manning.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Hayes F. Samuels Funeral Home with the Rev. Cokley Richburg officiating.
