Nord Witherspoon
Nord “Munk” Witherspoon, 59, died Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 23, 1943, in the Live Oak community of Clarendon County, he was the son of Louis and Martha Brown Witherspoon. Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, he joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church in his youth. He was a retired employee of the New England Lock Company as a machinist in Norwalk, Conn.

Survivors include four sisters, Martha L. Witherspoon and Emma L. Witherspoon of Manning, Bernice W. Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Martha W. Nails of Norwalk.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn W. Smiling and Edith W. Starks; and two brothers, Ronnie Witherspoon and Willie Marion Witherspoon.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Pressley, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Sarah Robinson
Sarah “Sodia” Robinson, 86, widow of Charlie Robinson, died Wednesday evening, February 12, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 16, 1916, in Clarendon County, St. Paul community, Summerton, she was the daughter of the late James Butler and Florence Green Butler. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. A lifelong and dedicated member of Liberty A.M.E. Church, she served her church as a class leader and member of the missionary society, gospel choir, senior choir, kitchen committee, burial committee, stewardess board and willing workers club until her health failed. Her civic affiliations included the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Clarendon branch of the YMCA organization.

Survivors include a daughter, Emma Gean Robinson of the home; three sisters, Ida Robinson, Henrietta Carswell of Washington, D.C., and Lillie Johnson of Buffalo, N.Y.; and an adopted niece, Emma Jane Lane of the home.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included the men of the church.

Floral bearers included the missionaries of the church.

Laura Mae Veason
Laura Mae Veason, 91, widow of William Rastus Veason, died Saturday, February 22, 2003, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born March 13, 1911, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Molly Boseman Blackmon. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three daughters, Vernie Mae Morris and Peggy Rigdon Barrett of Manning and Terry Ford of Crestview, Fla.; two sisters, Ada Bell Williams Yarborough of Charleston and Lila Jones of Camden; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Johnny Rigdon and Raymond Harrison Rigdon Jr.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. William Jeffers officiating.

Burial followed in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery near Manning.

Johnnie F. Smith
Johnnie Fitzgerald “Gerald” Smith, 28, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at the home of his parents.

Born Sept. 9, 1973, in Sumter, he was the son of Johnnie L. Smith Jr. and Betty A. McFadden Smith. He joined Friendship Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the usher board, the youth choir and the young adult choir. He served as secretary at Sunday school and traveled with the Presbyterian Youth Mission to Korea in 1993. He graduated salutatory in the 1991 class of East Clarendon High School in Turbeville. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1996. He was a member of the Chi Zeta chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. He was employed as an aerospace electronic system engineer, an aircraft application consultant and worked in navigation operations for Honeywell International in Clearwater, Fla.

Survivors besides his parents of New Zion include a daughter, Jailah Faith Smith of Largo, Fla.; two brothers, John Reggie Kennedy and his wife Kimberly of Kingstree and Troy Deon Smith of Rock Hill; a foster brother, Nakia Cooper and his wife Andrea of Columbia; and a foster sister, Ruby Middleton-Glover of Sumter.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at the Melina Presbyterian Church in Gable. The Rev. Carnell Hampton officiated, assisted by The Rev. Stanley W. Jones, the Rev. Jerome McCray, Dr. Rodney A. Foster, the Rev. Sam Whack Jr. and Elder Marshall Ivey.

Pallbearers were members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Honorary pallbearers included classmates and Friendship Presbyterian Men.

Floral bearers were Friendship Presbyterian Young Adult Women and classmates.

Memorials may be made to Friendship Presbyterian Church Building “in memory of Johnnie Fitzgerald Smith,” 10132 Black River Road, New Zion, S.C. 29111.

Joseph Stukes
Joseph “Bubba Son” Stukes, 80, husband of the late Mae Bell Stukes, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, in Manning.

Born Feb. 2, 1922, in the Davis Station Crossroad section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Friendly Stukes and Millie Lawson Stukes. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and joined Spring Hill AME Church in his youth. He was a retired farmer and maintenance technician.

Survivors include two caregivers, Lucille Hicks and her husband Atlee of Manning and Mozetta Isaac and her husband Jefferson of Gable; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Stukes and Margaret Miller of Manning.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jerome McCray officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Arthur M. Morris
Arthur Moody Morris, 80, husband of Annie Lou Beard Morris, died Monday at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 2, 1921, in New Zion, he was the son of the late Lewis and Janie Knowlton Morris. He was a retired contractor and a member of Union Baptist Church in New Zion and was an Army veteran of WWII.

Survivors besides his wife of New Zion include a daughter, Debbie Hardy of New Zion; a son, Glenn Morris of New Zion; three brothers, Henley Morris and Gene A. Morris of New Zion and L.B. Morris of Conway; a granddaughter, Sherri Lynn Morris of New Zion; and a stepgrandson, Robert Ashley Wheeler III of New Zion.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Revs. Morris Smith and Bobby Morris officiating.

Burial followed in New Zion United Methodist Church cemetary.

Pallbearers were nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Rebekah A. Richburg
Rebekah Altman Richburg, wife of George Thomas “Tommy” Richburg, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at her home in Manning.

Born in Vox, she was the daughter of the late John James Altman and Mettie Cooper Altman.

She was a member of the International Word of Faith.

Survivors besides her husband include three daughters, Reborah Moy of Florence, Tina Millard of Maui, Hawaii and Carolyn Dyson of Manning; five sons, Dwight Carraway of Myrtle Beach, Matt Carraway of Sumter, Dan Carraway of Darlington, George Richburg of Maui and Lee Richburg of Manning; two sisters, Hannah Erwin of Florence and Drue McCrea of Kingstree; and five grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel, Manning, with the Rev. Steve McCartt officiating.

Burial followed in Foreston Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Paul Moy, Dennis Altman, Dean McCrea, Stanley Thompson, Richard Borges and Koby Bird.

Memorials may be made to International Word of Faith, 5570 Highway 260, Manning, S.C. 29150.

Laree W. Cooper
Laree Witherspoon Cooper, 67, wife of Willie “Dunk” Cooper Sr., died Thursday, November 21, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 13, 1935, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Eugene James Witherspoon and Marie Brown Witherspoon. She was a stepdaughter of the late William Hilton and Samuel McClary. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a graduate of Manning Training School. She was a member of Howard Chapel AME Church before joining Melina Presbyterian Church (USA), where she served on the usher board and gospel choir. She retired from Campbell Soup.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include three sons, Willie Cooper Jr. and his wife, Andrena, of Fayetteville, N.C., Joseph “Joe” Cooper of Gable and Timothy “Pa Pa” Cooper of Summerton; five daughters, Lillie McFadden and her husband, Leroy, of Gable, Jerlene C. Davis and Wanda A. Cooper of Sumter, Cynthia Cooper of Camden and Linda M. Cooper of Rembert; a stepdaughter, Christine Humes of Baltimore; a sister, Mary Nell Mitchell and her husband, Jimmy, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Willie Mae.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Melina Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Jerome McCray and Alfred Bradley.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Susanna R. McFadden
Sumter - Susanna R. McFadden, 87, widow of Jasper McFadden, died Saturday, November 30, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 16, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Johnson and Lorena Brand. She was a lifelong member of St. Michael Baptist Church, New Zion, where she served as mother of the church. She also served on the pastor’s aide committee and missionary society. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She worked as a farmer and homemaker for a number of years before moving to Sumter. She retired after 25 years of service as a domestic worker.

Survivors include a son, Lathay McFadden and his wife, Betty, of Daily City, Calif.; three daughters, Lucille Jackson of Detroit, Alice Easter and her husband, Howard, of Boston and Susie White and her husband, Michael, of Sumter; a devoted granddaughter and caregiver, Sabrina Evans of the home; five brothers, Abraham Johnson of Fayetteville, N.C., Alex Johnson and his wife, Mary, and Harry Johnson and his wife, Flossie, of Sumter, Henry Johnson and his wife, Lottie, and Wesley Johnson, of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Carrie McFadden and her husband, Maxwell, and Henrietta Wilson, of Sumter; a devoted sister-in-law, the Rev. Sallie Burgess of Sumter; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara McFadden; a sister, Cenia Burgess; a brother, Elevor Brand; and an adopted daughter, Cheryl McFadden.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Michael Baptist Church, New Zion, with the Rev. Phillip Boyd officiating, assisted by the Revs. Jack Morant, Tresha Brockington and Barrington Pierson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Granddaughters served as floral bearers.

Rev. John H. Ellison
The Rev. John Henry Ellison, 70, husband of Sadie Mae Kinder Ellison, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center.

Born Jan. 21, 1932, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late George and Carrie Oliver Ellison. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning. In 1953, he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Clarendon County, where he was a progressive farmer for most of his life.

In 1983, he joined the ministry. He preached to individuals who were unable to attend church by ministering weekly to the residents of Windsor Manor Nursing Home in the Silver community of Clarendon County, Dorch Community Center in Manning, Carriage Nursing Home in Sumter, Mariner Nursing Home in Sumter and Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton. At the age of 70, he faithfully ministered daily.

Survivors besides his wife include five sons, John Ellison Jr. and Lenard Ellison of Davis Station, Roderick Ellison of Columbia, Rochester Kinder of Irvington, N.J., and Richard Kinder of East Orange, N.J.; four daughters, MaLinda Ham of the home, Marilyn Rich and her husband Bennie of Willingboro, N.J., Pastor Sherry Williamson and her husband Brooks of Johnston and Patricia Burwell and her husband Gary of Columbia; three brothers, James “Elec” Ellison of Manning, Albert Brailsford of Sumter and William B. Brailsford of New York; two sisters, Phillips Walker and her husband Cleveland of Manning and Rhodie Jones of Bellport, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning with Apostle Brooks S. Williamson and the Revs. Henry Epps, Ashley Vaughn, Fritzgerald Ellison, Eddie Lesaine and Sherry Williamson officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
