Ivy L. Milligan
Ivy Logan Milligan, 87, of the Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg, wife of the Rev. William P. Milligan, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, in Orangeburg Regional Medical Center.

Born April 29, 1916, in Laurelvale, Northern Ireland, she was the daughter of the late William and Nora Maginnis Logan. She and her husband served United Methodist Churches in Olar, Greenwood, Graniteville, Manning and Andrews. Prior to moving to Methodist Oaks, Rev. and Mrs. Milligan spent their retirement years in Manning, where she was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her loving husband of sixty-five years, the Rev. William Prestley (Billy) Milligan; two sons, William Lloyd Milligan of Isle of Palms and David Howard Milligan and wife, Laura Morris Milligan of Greenville; four grandchildren, Kerry Milligan Welti and her spouse, Erin Theodore Welti of Columbia, Michael David Milligan of Columbia, Erin Milligan Harmon and her spouse, Neil Sterling Harmon of Mount Pleasant and William Lloyd Milligan II of Isle of Palms; a brother, Kenneth Logan of Northern Ireland; and two sisters, Phyllis Baird and Dora Logan of Northern Ireland.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Phyllis Gwendolynne Milligan and a son, William Prestley Milligan Jr.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Manning United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jerry Watson and Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Charlie Gavin, Artie Felder, W.E. Horton Jr., Travis Brown Jr., Alfred Breedin Jr. and John M. Odom.

Honorary Pallbearers were Eddie and Shriley Barrett and John and Nita Denny.

Mary R. Mims
Mary Lydia Richbourg Mims, 82, wife of Daniel Julius Mims, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 20, 1920, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Matthew E. and Mary Lee Graham Richbourg. She was a retired inspector for Manning Manufacturing Company, and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors, besides her husband of Manning, are a daughter, Danette Briggs and her husband, Lyle K. of Dover, Del.; a brother, Cecil M. Richbourg of Columbia; a granddaughter, Paula Piccoli of Apex, N.C.; a grandson, Daniel R. Briggs of Wilmington, Del.; and a great-grandson, Matthew E. Piccoli.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating.

Burial followed in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Manning First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 610, Manning, S.C. 29102, the American Kidney Foundation, or to the Clarendon County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 414, Manning, S.C. 29102.

John P. Pendergrass
Chester - John P. Pendergrass, 56, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, in the Chester County Hospital.

Born in Chester on May 22, 1946, he was the son of the late John Pendergrass and Cleo Thompson Pendergrass. A former employee of Shugart Manufacturing and Willamette Industries, Inc., he was a U.S. Marines veteran and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He attended Finley High School in Chester and York Technical College and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his sister, Celestine Martin of Manning; and his caregiver, Leola McCullough of Chester.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of King’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Stringfellow Jr. officiating.

Burial followed in Gethsemane Baptist Church Cemetery.

Debbie V. Prince
Debbie Vernice Prince, 31, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in Sumter.

Born Aug. 7, 1971, in Manning, she was the daughter of Willie Albert and Beretta Gibbs Prince. She was a 1990 graduate of Manning High School and she was employed with Gold Kist in Sumter. She attended Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church and Grace Cathedral.

Survivors include six brothers, Frank Lawson and Steve Lawson of St. Paul, Slyvestar (Brenda) Gibbs, Issac Prince and Charles Prince of Manning, and Albert Lee Prince of Sumter; and two sisters, Loretta Washington of Orangeburg and Rosa Mae Prince of Manning.

Services were at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church in the Bloomville community with the Rev. C. Richburg, presiding, and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist, S.C. 260 in Manning.

Pallbearers were the Class of 1990.

Floral bearers were the co-workers from Gold Kist and the missionary society of the church.

Roberta P. Ragin
Roberta Plowden Ragin, 66, widow of Daniel “Junior” Ragin Jr., died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 30, 1936, in the Red Hill community of Manning, she was the daughter of the late Johnny Plowden and Alice Cubbage Plowden. She attended Goodwill Parochial School, Manning Training School and graduated from Scott’s Branch High School Adult Class. She attended WSMB Tech College in Kingstree. She joined Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church at an early age and later became a member of the Church of Christ in Manning. She was employed at Clarendon County Head Start, Clarendon Memorial Hospital and DHEC and retired in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Harry Lee “Jackie” Ragin of Manning; two daughters, Linda R. Whigan and Cynthia Dannette R. Haynie of the home; five brothers, Charlie Plowden and Allen Plowden of Philadelphia, Elijah Plowden and Allen Haynesworth of Manning, George (Denise) Haynewsworth of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Mazerine Taylor and Della (Leroy) Holland of Suffolk, Va., and Annadell Montgomery of Jesup, Md.; an adopted mother, Jaunita Nelson of Davis Station; five grandchildren; and a loving and devoted friend, Emma Spry of the home.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie, Sam and Auddie Plowden; and a sister, Lucille Brunson.

Services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning, with Brother Halbert Tucker officiating, assisted by the Revs. Shelley Hickson and Franklin McCants.

Burial followed in Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Goodwill Church Road in Manning.

Eddie (Edward) Riley Jr.
Sumter - Eddie (Edward) Riley Jr., 84, the husband of Jerona Washington Riley, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 28, 1918, he was the son of the late Eddie Riley and the late Estelle Stokes Riley. He was educated in the public schools of South Carolina and New York City. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Paxville. He served his country in the United States Army for four years and received an honorable discharge. After retirement, he returned to South Carolina.

Survivors besides his wife, Jerona W. Riley of Sumter, include one brother, Marion Riley and his wife, Doris of Paxville; two aunts, Elizabeth Riley and Alice Riley of New York City; two godchildren, Moiselle Raynor of New York and Michael Valarie of Florence; five sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Paxville, with the Revs. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, Dr. Matthew Riley, Derrick Grant, O.J. Hannah and Dr. C. Richburg officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Sumter.

Paul B. Martin Jr.
Paul B. Martin Jr., 78, husband of Mrs. Susan Charles Martin, departed this life on May 11, 2003, at the National Health Care Corporation in Sumter.

Born Dec. 26, 1927, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Paul B. Martin Sr., and Mrs. Virginia “Fairy” Martin.

Martin was reared in a Christian home and became a member of Antioch AME Church in his youth, where he was a member of the men’s chorus and the adult Sunday school class. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.

Martin worked for a number of years with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad, the Williams Furniture Company and Campbell Soup Company. He retired from the Campbell Soup Company, Sumter Plant.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Melba Martin Kershaw, and husband, Lawrence A., of Sumter; one son, Roderick Gomez Martin and wife, Laverne F., of Irmo; four brothers, Willie C. Martin, Henry P. Martin and wife, Dorothy, both of Rimini, Carroll Martin of Lake City and Mr. Johnnie Lee Martin of Englewood, N.J.; three sisters, Mrs. Mattie James of Hampton, Ga., Mrs. Thelma White of Silver and Mrs. Virginia M. Fulmore and husband, Sam, of Lake City; and four grandchildren.

Services were at 1 p.m. Saturday at Antioch AME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Sylvester R. Miott, pastor, officiating. Assisting pastors included the Revs. L.E. Simmons, Manuel Fogel, Saymon James, Acy Thompson, Melissa Green, and Roosevelt Boyd.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Corinne D. McFarland
Corinne Dennis McFarland, 95, of Turbeville, died on May 13, 2003, at Ridgeway Nursing Facility after an illness.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thurs. May 15, 2003, at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Vernie Mae Morris
Vernie Mae Morris, 72, widow of Albert Daniel Morris, died Friday, May 16, 2003, in a Crestview, Fla., Hospital.

Born Dec. 8, 1930, in Winnsboro, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Raymond Harrison Rigdon and the late Laura Mae Blackmon Veason. She was a retired seamstress and a member of the Manning Church of God.

Survivors include two sisters, Peggy Barrett of Manning and Terry Ford of Crestview, Fla.; three nieces; five nephews; five grandnieces; six grandnephews; and a number of great-great-nieces and nephews.

Services were at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial followed in the Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bernard W. White
Eutawville – Bernard Winford White, 53, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, in Eutawville.

Born June 3, 1950, in Manning, he was the son of the late Lee H. and Leila Dailey White. He was a U.S. Army veteran, employed in commercial construction, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three sisters, Kathy Lane of Dillion, Deborah Durtche of Plainwell, Michigan, and Bonnie Yarborough of Greenville; two brothers, Fred White and Donald F. White of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Florence National Cemetery with the Rev. Wayland Owens officiating.

Walter T. Whitt
Walter Thomas “Tommy” Whitt, 66, husband of Polly Payne Whitt, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at his residence in Turbeville.

Born Oct. 9, 1936, in Laredo, W.Va., he was the son of the late Walter and Irene Shepard Whitt. He was a retired structural steel painter.

Survivors, besides his wife of Turbeville, include two sons, John Ashley Whitt and Walter Thomas Whitt Jr., of Turbeville; a granddaughter, Madisyn Olivia Whitt; a brother, Harold Whitt of Ashland, Ky.; two sisters, Delores Kiser of Grayson Ky., and Josie Bocook of Westwood, Ky.

Private family services will be held at a later date.
