S.E. Yates Jr.
Sam Edward “S.E.” Yates Jr., 77, widower of Ruth Bochette Yates, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 13, 1926, in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Sam E. Yates Sr., and the late Bessie Joye Yates. He was a retired painter and a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Claudette Dixon and her husband Charles of Sumter, and Barbara Ann Geddings of Turbeville; a son Harry E. Yates and special friend Vickie Weaver of Turbeville; two brothers, Norris Yates of Santee and Jackie Yates of Portland, Ore.; five sisters, Joyce Mixon and Rosa Mae Kelly of Florence, Kay Player of Sumter, Sharon Matthews of Turbeville and Sandra Gaskins of Thailand; four grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in Turbeville Southern Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Crowe officiated.

Pallbearers were Rusty Dixon, Craig Dixon, Brooks Yates, Cliff Matthews, Wayne Kelly and Gerald McElveen.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Freewill Baptist Home for Children, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Arthur J. Collins Jr.
Arthur J. Collins Jr., 79, beloved husband of Joan Griswold Collins, died Friday, May 23, 2003, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Jan. 14, 1924, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of the late Arthur J. Collins Sr., and the late Marion Clark Collins. He was a retired CPA in West Hartford, Conn., and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Wharton College of Finance.

Survivors include his wife of Manning; four sons, Arthur Collins III, of Pinebush, N.Y., Louis Jodoin of Manning, Mark Jodoin of Burbank, Calif., and Daniel Collins of West Hartford, Conn.; a daughter, Mary Wilson of Harvard, Mass., and four grandchildren.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Joseph E. Davis
Joseph Edward Davis, 86, husband of the late Elizabeth Hobbie Davis, died on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Covenant Place in Sumter.

He was born in Summerton, the son of the late Harry Edward Davis and Mildred Rivera James Davis. He attended Summerton schools and graduated from the Citadel in 1938 with a degree in physics. He was a 1940 graduate of Georgia Tech with a degree in electrical engineering and of New York University in 1941 with a degree in meteorology. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 as a second lieutenant and received weather service training in 1941 at Gunter Field, Ala. He attended flight school in 1942 at Orangeburg, Shaw and Spank fields. He then served as a pilot and weather officer during WWII (1943-1945) in the Aleutian Islands. He completed Air Corps Engineering School at Wright Field, Ohio, in 1946. He left active duty in 1947 at the rank of lieutenant colonel and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1947-1976, retiring at the rank of colonel.

Upon settling in Sumter, he established Osteen-Davis Office Supply and Printing in 1947 and operated the business until selling it in 1985. He was a member of the Knock Rummy Group, the Road’s End Club, the Millwood Club, the Thalian Club, the Sumter Coalition, the Assembly Club, the American Legion and the Air Force Association. He was a former member of the Cooper River Club, the Shelor Pond Club, the Sumter Lions Club, the Sumter Merchants Association-past president, and the Sumter Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, where he once served as a member of the vestry.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Joseph Edward Davis Jr., and his wife, Ruth Hutchinson Davis of Montgomery, Ala.; one daughter, Hobbie Davis Williams and her husband, Gregory Haywood Williams of Sumter; four grandchildren, Joseph Edward Davis III and Ann Hughston Davis of Montgomery, Ala.; Virginia Williams Bernal of Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth Hobbie Williams of Columbia; one great grandson, Joaquin Salvador Bernal of Austin.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Revs. John M. Barr III and Mark R. Riggs officiating. Burial followed at the Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers included John Evans James III, George Coggin James Jr., William Johns James, Thomas Cooper James Jr., Hugh McCutchen James Jr., and Joseph Alston James. Honorary pallbearers included Charles Alston James, Hodgdon Christian Nuckols Jr., William Watson Chamblin, John Arthur Folley, and members of the Knock Rummy Group and the Road’s End Club.

Memorial may be made to The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, P.O. Box 338, Sumter, SC 29150, or to York Place, 234 Kings Mountain Street, York, SC 29745.

Harold S. Iseman Sr.
Harold S. Iseman Sr., 81, husband of Margarete Sholar Iseman, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late Jake Iseman and the late Taska Turbeville Iseman. He was twice married, first to the late Mary Alice Atkinson Iseman and then to Margarete Sholar Iseman.

Iseman was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, a retired United States Army recruiter, a member of Sumter Masonic Temple, a member of American Legion Post No. 15, Boy Scout Master of Troop No. 327 for 21 years, coached Alice Drive midget football and little league baseball. He was the Veteran’s Affairs officer for Sumter County, Deputy Clerk of Court for Sumter County and the former president of the Gamecock Booster Club.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Harold Iseman Jr. and wife, Lucerne of West Columbia and Wayne Iseman and wife, Leesa of Pendleton; two stepdaughters, Laura Brogdon and husband, Dr. Fred Brogdon and Kathy Cheek and husband, Roger of Sumter; ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services were held Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Benny Barwick officiating.

Elizabeth A. Mims
Elizabeth A. Mims, 89, widow of Carl “Corrie” Mims, died Friday, May 23, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born November 26, 1913, in Bishopville, she was the daughter of the late Mack and Leola Player Amerson. She was retired from food service in the public schools of Clarendon County, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Alcolu.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hildebrand of Manning, and Elizabeth Britt and husband, Richard of Alcolu; two sons, Winfield Mims of Columbia and Carl Mims of Weldon, N.C.; a sister, Doris Taylor of North Charleston; a brother, Herbert Amerson of Anniston, Ala.; thirteen grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Welch and Margaret Morris.

Services were held Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Alcolu, with the Rev. Fred Treaster officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 326, Alcolu, SC 29001.

Ethel W. Millender
St. Matthews - Ethel Weeks Millender, 91, widow of Fullie Lee Millender, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at the Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late John Richard Weeks and Anna B. Holiday Weeks. She was a member of West Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Graham of St. Matthews; a granddaughter, Pauletta Graham of St. Matthews; a grandson, Dale Graham of Brantley, Ala.; three sisters, Burrell (Rose) Lowder of St. Matthews, Sallie Bell Mathis of Bristol, Tenn., and Donald (Lilly) Brunson of Greenwood; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday in West Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Lindsey Rivers officiating.

Mary G. Starks
Mary Green Starks, 91, widow of George Starks, died Friday, September 27, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.

Born March 10, 1911, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Flander and Nora Green. She was educated in Clarendon County public schools. At an early age, she joined Taw Caw Baptist Church and was a member of the missionary.

Survivors include a daughter, Mae Pearl and her husband, Nolie Caldwell, of Summerton; two sisters, Rena Mack and Martha Huggins of Summerton; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Clemon Caldwell.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Taw Caw Baptist Church with the Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Azel Wilson
Azel “Tee” Wilson, 56, died Saturday, September 21, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 11, 1946, in the Camp Branch section of Florence County, he was the son of the late Molester “Suge” Wilson and Oliva Rose Wilson. He attended Sumter County public schools and Eastern High School. In his youth, he joined St. Mark Holiness Church in Lake City. He was a former truck driver of Smith Grading and Paving Co. of Turbeville.

Survivors include a daughter, Michell Wilson of Turbeville; five brothers, Elroy Wilson, Donald Wilson and his wife, Odell, of Dalzell, Isaac Wilson and his wife, Deloris, Abraham Wilson and his wife, Florence, of Olanta, and Sammy Wilson of the home; a nephew reared as his brother, Eugene Wilson Jr. of Turbeville; a sister, Margaret Walker and her husband, the Rev. William of Atlanta; and two nieces reared as sisters, Deloris Woods of Greeleyville and Shirley Lee and her husband, Randell, of Moncks Corner.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene “Duke” Wilson Sr.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove AME Church in Lake City with the Rev. Oliver Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by his uncle, the Rev. A.R. Rose.

Burial followed in the Old McFadden Cemetery.

Friends of the family served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Lula Mae O. Brown
Lula Mae Owens Brown, 90, died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at McCoy Nursing Home in Bishopville after an illness.

Born May 30, 1912, in Miller, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Susie Conway Pennington. She was a homemaker and had attended First United Methodist Church of Marion.

She was first married to the late Edward Owens and second to the late Clinton Brown.

Survivors include a daughter June C. Davis of Garden City; three sons, Eddie Lee Owens of Bishopville, Johnny T. Owens of Charlotte, N.C., and Wyman Owens of Marion; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother Clinton Robinson of Chulavista, Calif.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Smith-Collins Funeral Home in Marion.

Burial followed in Devotion Gardens Cemetery, directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home.

Roosevelt Pearson
Roosevelt “Rock” Pearson, 103, widower of Maggie Montgomery Pearson and Rosa Smith Johnson Pearson, died Monday, September 30, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born January 12, 1899, in the Freetown section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Henry Pearson and Anna Liza Johnson Pearson. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was one of the organizers and founders of White Oak AME Church.

Survivors include a son, Charles Pearson and his wife, Polly, of Miami; a daughter, Annie Mae McCray of Leisure City, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Inez J. Wilson and her companion, Willie Montgomery, of Manning; a granddaughter and caregiver, Madeline Billups of the home; a brother, Beasley Pearson of Manning; 13 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Leola Montgomery Cain; and a son, James Pearson.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Triumph The Church Kingdom of God of Christ with Elder Sampson Pearson, pastor and Mattie Mouzon, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerial Dingle.

Burial followed in the Carolina-Johnson Cemetery in Summerton.
