COLUMBIA — Services for Ms. Naomi Brand will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Surviving are her daughters, Feola Alston, Gloria Alston, and Rosalie Alston Johnson; sons, Matthew Manning and Willie Alston; sister, Earlin Williams; six grandsons; four granddaughters; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Mattie Allen

WEST COLUMBIA — A graveside service for Mattie Harsey Johnson Allen will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Oaklawn Cemetery, Pelion. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home, North. Born in Wagener to the late Nathan Pitts and Fannie Shepherd Harsey, she died December 7, 2004. She was a member of Bethesda Bible Church. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

Eugene Davis

SUMTER — Services for Eugene “Gene” Davis, are 1 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer AME Church; burial: Mayesville Cemetery. Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge. Born in Lee Co. to Charlie and Georgianna Colclough Davis Sr., he died Dec. 6, 2004. Surviving: wife, Martha McLeod Davis; children, London, Renault Davis, Cynthia Parker, Wondra Farmer, Doreoetha Glover, Montini Gates, Roger Wheeler.

Robert Driscoll Sr.

CLIO — A memorial service for Robert Leo Driscoll Sr., 82, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Whitner-Evans Funeral Home, Bennettsville. Born in Boston, he retired as a supervisor from Oak River Mills and was an Army veteran of World War II. He died December 7, 2004. Surviving: wife, Trony Driscoll; children, Bobby, Johnny Driscoll, Pat Newton; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Mary Feaster

CHESTER — Services with burial for Mary Frances W. Feaster, widow of James Feaster, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Purity Baptist Church. Viewing is 3-9 p.m. today at Christopher King’s Funeral Home. Born in Star, N.C., to James and Mary Ramsey Woods, she died Dec. 5, 2004. Surviving: children, Willie, Charles, Roosevelt, Jesse, Perry and Harvey Feaster, Martha Woodard; brothers and sisters.

Clive Gergel

COLUMBIA — Service for Clive Walker Gergel, 76, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Greenlawn Mausoleum Chapel with entombment in the mausoleum. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 121 Humane Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29209. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. in the Greenlawn Mausoleum Chapel prior to the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Gergel died Wednesday, December 8, 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Clive William Walker and Eleanor Ellerbee Walker. A graduate of Dreher High School, she worked at Columbia Organic Chemical Co. on the Manhatten Project. She was a member of Sherwood Forest Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

A loving mother, grandmother, friend and caregiver, Mrs. Gergel is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor Gergel Diebold and David Diebold of Mt. Pleasant; grandson, Benjamin Diebold; and cousins, Martha Anne and Molly Boozer and William Higbe, all of Columbia.

Leroy Hastings

GREENWOOD — Services for James Leroy Hastings, 64, Greenwood Mills retiree, Whitehall Church of God member, 3:30 p.m. today (2:30 p.m. visitation) at Harley Funeral Home; burial: Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Born in Greenwood to Otis and Metta Riddle Hastings, he died Dec. 8, 2004. Surviving: children, Angela, James, Gregg, Michael; sisters, Thelma Jean Hastings, Lillie Golden; grandchildren.

Joseph Hewell

GREENVILLE — Joseph A. “Joe” Hewell, 86, husband of Bessie “Bess” Berry Hewell, died Thursday, December 9, 2004, at his residence.

He was the son of the late Thomas A. and Hassie Mae Pulliam Hewell.

Mr. Hewell was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Stewards. He was Chairman of 291 Enterprises, which operated a number of fine restaurants, including Howard Johnsons, Bonanza, and Talk Of The Town. He also co founded the national Red Lobster restaurant chain. He served on the boards of Ryan’s Family Steak House, Southern Bank and Trust, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, National Restaurant Association, and the Greenville Country Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post #3, Elks and Sertoma Clubs.

He was a United States Air Force veteran having served during WWII.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Joseph A. Hewell, Jr. and his wife Jennie of Taylors; two brothers, Clyde and Tom Hewell both of Elberton, GA; four grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Donnie, and Elizabeth.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 701 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601 or to Miracle Hill Ministries, PO Box 2546, Greenville, SC 29602.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 11, 2004 at 3:00 PM at St. Matthew United Methodist Church with visitation to follow the service at the church.

The family will be at the residence.

Pearl Lowman

JOANNA — Pearl Bouknight Lowman, 97, formerly of 407 Pickens St., and the widow of Johnnie F. Lowman, Sr., died Wednesday, December 8th at the NHC Healthcare of Clinton.

She was born in Richland County and was the daughter of the late George and Lilly Derrick Bouknight. Mrs. Lowman was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are one son, Johnnie Lowman, Jr. of Greenwood; three daughters, Jo Nell Honeycutt, Marlene Thomas and Ann Bouslay, all of Joanna; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Caro Frick of Lexington and Dorothy Chapman of Chapin.

She was predeceased by a sister, Roslyn Swygert and two grandsons, “Al” Thomas and Alan Honeycutt.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel with interment in the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery in White Rock.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will be at 303 Blalock Drive, Joanna.

SUMTER — Services for Janie Lou J. McCoy, widow of Willie McCoy, 11 a.m. Saturday: Trinity Presbyterian Church USA, Mayesville; burial: Hillside Memorial Park. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Sumter to Edward and Annie Lesane James, she died Dec. 4, 2004. Surviving: children, Willie, Albertha McCoy, Jessie Jackson, Carrie Randolph; siblings, Willie Rollerson, Rebecca Capers, Jesse, Annie James; more.

Valencia Moorer

COLUMBIA — Services for Ms. Valencia Tamika Moorer, 22, will be held noon Saturday (viewing at 11 a.m.) at Zion Mill Creek Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Wake services will be held 7 p.m. this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are her parents, Sammie and Deborah Pearson; sister, Samanda Pearson; grandparents, James and Mary Moorer and Willie and Gladys Pearson; aunts; uncles.

NEWBERRY — Services with burial for Mrs. Gertrude Henderson Nance 2 p.m. Saturday at James Hopewell Baptist Church. F.B. Pratt & Son Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Newberry Co. to Janie Dunbar Cook and Olin Henderson, reared by her stepfather, David Cook, she died Dec. 6, 2004. Surviving: children, Marilynn, James, Donald; stepsister, Annie Acker; uncles, L.C Dunbar, James Crooks; more.
