Deacon Horace Pugh Sr.
Sumter-Deacon Horace Pugh Sr., 80, died Monday, May 5, 2003 in Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia.

Born June 30, 1922, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Bennie and the late Clara Davis Pugh. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a member of the gospel choir. He was a retired employee of Williams Furniture Co. of Sumter. He was joined in holy matrimony with the late Phoebe Boyd Pugh. Seven children were born to this union, six sons and one daughter.

Survivors include his sons, Horace Pugh Jr. of the home; Standard Pugh of Paxville, Randy (Janet) Pugh of Chesapeake, Va.; Jerome (Gloria) Pugh of Manning; Arthur (Louise) Pugh of Anderson and Kenneth Pugh of Niles, Ohio; one daughter, Lorraine Pugh of Columbia; 13 grandchildren, LaTonya, Shonte, Shevone, Rahmaine, Jamil, Omar, Terrance, TaShan, LaToya, Tyrell, Tyra, Artryce and Nathaniel; five great-grandchildren, Brandon, Jeylenn, Tia, Tierra and Tru Bishop; two sisters, Clara Mae P. Kennybrew of Jacksonville, Fla., and Elma Ruth P. Benjamin of Miami; three brothers, Emanuel Pugh of Sumter; Allen Pugh of Atlanta; and Johnny Pugh of Alcolu; one sister-in-law, Katherine Pugh of Paxville; one brother-in-law, Earl Boyd of Thomasville, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bennie L. Pugh.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church in the Paxville community. The Rev. Henry Pressley, pastor, officiated and was assisted by the Revs. C. Witherspoon, James C. Clark and David Pugh.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Floral bearers were the deaconess of Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church.

Nona P. Timmons
Nona Gail Parker Timmons, 53, widow of Jimmy Lee Timmons, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at her home in Manning.

Born March 14, 1950, in Cades, she was the daughter of Martha Lucille Owens Parker and the late Hartwell Parker. She was a member of Manning Second Baptist Church and a retired secretary for Sunbeam and Laidlaw.

Survivors include her mother of Barrineau; two daughters, Kristie Thomas Welch and husband Chuck of Turbeville and Deanna McElveen and husband Lloyd of Turbeville; one brother, Danny O’Neal Parker of Lake City; two sisters, Helen Floyd of Lake City and Barbara Ann Matthews of Manning; and three grandchildren.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Esta G. Gilley officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Charlotte E. Allen
Charlotte Epps Allen, 91, widow of Steve Allen, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, in the Windsor Manor Nursing Home.

Born June 23, 1911, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of Dock Epps Sr. and Lillie Mae McFadden Epps.

At an early age, she joined Little Zion Baptist Church. Later the church split and First Baptist Church of Crown Heights was formed where she became a member and sang in the gospel choir. Mrs. Allen resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., for many years before moving back home to Sumter.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Charlene Scarborough; two sisters, Anna Terry of Brooklyn and Amelia Epps of Sumter; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Epps of Sumter, Johnnie Lee Epps of Montgomery, Ala., Lucinda Epps of Manning and Patricia Epps of Brooklyn; and a brother-in-law, Richard McCleary of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deloris E. Scarborough; a grandson, Henry Scarborough; four brothers, David, John, Ceasar, and Dock Epps Jr.; and three sisters, Lillie Mae Zinnerman, Sarah Pearson, and Mary Jane McCleary.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2003, in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc., with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating, assisted by the Rev. Marion H. Newton. Burial followed in Greenhill Cemetery.

Ellen P. Barrett
Ellen Pendergrass Barrett, 88, widow of W. Blease Barrett, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton

Born Feb. 8, 1915, in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Connor and Lorena Britton Pendergrass. She was a member of Summerton Baptist Church, where she worked in the church nursery for 37 years.

Survivors include a son, Woodrow B. Barrett Jr., (Joy) of Summerton; a daughter, Elaine Felkel (Wade) of Elloree; a sister, Dorothy Putnam of Florence; two grandchildren, Stephanie Felkel Mitchum (Anthony) of Blythewood, Tripp Barrett of Summerton, and a special in-law, Bobby Posey of Rockmart, Ga. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Anthony Felkel.

Services were at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, in Summerton Baptist Church. The Rev. Rob Pierce officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Christian N. Bryan
Christian Nicole Bryan, infant daughter of James D. and Casey Carraway Bryan of Sumter, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Survivors include her parents; maternal grandparents, Dale and Debbie Carraway of Pinewood; paternal grandparents, Jay and Tamie Bryan of Sumter; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Welch of Sumter; Ms. Nancy Carraway of Sumter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vitello of Paxville, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bryan Sr. of Litchfield Beach.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Jay Carraway.

Graveside services were at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 1 at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Bobby Fletcher officiated.

Memorials may be made to The Wee Care Foundation, in care of the First Baptist Church, Leesville, S.C.

Josephine V. Doughty
Josephine Vanessa Doughty, 10, died May 22, 2003, in Manning.

Born Aug. 17, 1993, in Manning, she was the daughter of Annette Doughty of Manning and Joseph Doughty Jr., of Bridgeport, Conn. She attended Manning Elementary School and completed the fourth grade in May, 2003. She received many awards for her enthusiasm for reading. She was a member of Outreach Ministry Church in Sumter.

Survivors include a sister, Kayla Doughty of Manning; grandparents, Joseph and Janie Doughty Sr., and Hester Thames, all of Manning; and great-grandmother, Amelia Cubit of Summerton.

A viewing was Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Blackwell and Jenkins Funeral Home.

Services were at 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Manning Elementary School with Pastor Virnetta Bennett officiating. Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Annie E. DuBose
Pinewood – Annie Eliza “Gallie” DuBose, 92, of 1773 Bomar Trail, widow of Henry DuBose, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Aug. 5, 1910, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Mary Davis Burgess and Frank Richardson. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. In her early youth, she joined Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood where she remained until her death.

Survivors include one son, Henry DuBose Jr. of Pinewood; one daughter Elease Canty of Pinewood; three granddaughters, Yolanda Canty, and Trecia Canty of Cedarhurst, N.Y., and Deyun Riley of Pinewood; one grandson, Ray Crosby of Pinewood; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Beatrice Harvin, Lucille Davis and Louise Richardson; and one granddaughter Lorretta Johnson.

Services were at 3 p.m., on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. The Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Revs. Cammie Greene, Jonathan Smith, and Roosevelt Body. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

James C. English
James C. “Snook” English, 89, husband of Dora English, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at his home.

Born March 19, 1914, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Mr. Doughtery and Mrs. Alethia English.

He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Sumter for many years. Mr. English retired from Georgia Pacific Corp. after working many years.

Survivors besides his wife of the home includes two sons, John English and James Jeffery English Jr., of Sumter; eight daughters, Jannie Dixon (Russell) of Alcolu, Geraldine Brunson of Baltimore, Susan Barker (Victor), of Kansas City, Mo., Jane English, Virginia Dwyer, Linda Dwyer, Debra Brady (Allan), and Ida Taylor (Lee), of Sumter; a sister, Edith Johnson of Sumter; and a host of grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Enlish.

Services were at 3:30 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2003, at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. LaMonte Newsome, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Thomas Blyther and the Rev. Barbara Lash. Burial followed in the Greenhill Baptist Church cemetery in Alcolu.

Norma H. Forbes
1919-2003
Paxville, S. C.
Norma Halvorsen Forbes, 84, widow of James Le Roy Forbes, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at her home.

Born in Lily, South Dakota, she was the daughter of the late Gustave Halvorsen and the late Anna Sannes Halvorsen.

She was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church.

Norma Forbes life was a gift to her family, friends, and anyone who knew her. She had a special talent for creating a warm and loving home in any part of the world–from Panama to Newfoundland. A graduate from Nettleton Business College, Norma was more than a proficient secretary as she put her whole self into helping not only her employers, but all those she encountered, both old and young, working as a World War II military, medical, church, and Headstart secretary.

Norma instinctively put her family’s and friends’ needs before her own and recognized even the smallest kindness with sincere gratitude. She will be remembered for her loving heart, her ability to see the good in everyone, and her gift of finding humor in any situation. Norma’s caring and generous spirit has always been and will continue to be a model and cohesive bond for her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, James Roger Forbes and wife Claudia of Oneonta, New York, Raymond Lawrence Forbes and wife Traci of Manning, S.C., Mark Allen Forbes and wife Lynn of Columbia, S.C.; two daughters, Linda Laine Lee of Anchorage, Alaska, and Roberta Jewell Jackson and husband Dr. Raymond Jackson of Richmond, Kentucky; a daughter-in-law, Lorrene Forbes of Kenai, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Wayne Forbes; a daughter, Janyce Leanna Forbes Brannum; and eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dick Broomall officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her sons, grandsons, James Owen Forbes, Liam Owen Forbes, Duncan Ross Forbes, Bryan Douglas Lee, Christopher Adam Jackson, Spencer Hamilton Jackson, Ethan Thomas Forbes, Adam James Forbes, Raymond Marcus Forbes, and great-grandsons, Christopher Parker Jackson and Patrick Logan Jackson.

Norma’s family also recognizes with special thanks those friends who have given our mother such love, joy and faithfulness through out her life.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times in the family home.

Memorials may be made to the David Forbes Memorial Scholarship, in care of Kenai Peninsula College, 34820 College Drive, Soldotna, Alaska, 99669, or to the Paxville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 203, Pinewood, S.C. 29125
