Martha L. McLaughlin
1914-2004
Martha L. McLaughlin, 100, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at a local nursing center.

She was a daughter of the late Wesley J. Snyder and the late Martha Scott Snyder.

Mrs. McLaughlin was a 1924 graduate of Columbia College and a member of the Columbia College Alumni Association. She was employed as a elementary school teacher in Winter Park, Florida. She assisted in reconstruction efforts and war recovery of Japan shortly after World War II. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, Florida.

Surviving are two nieces, Betsy S. Acken and husband John of Sumter; Nancy Gardener and husband Rocky of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; two nephews, Jimmy Snyder and wife Cissy of Sumter and Harry Snyder and wife Carol Ann of Stuart, Florida.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dr. W. J. Snyder, Jr., Harry Snyder and Frank Snyder.

Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday in the Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Mark Riggs officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 P.M. Saturday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her niece, Betsy Acken.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Disorders Association, P. O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202.

James Franklin White
1914-2004
James Franklin White, 90, widower of Mildred Moffitt White, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was a resident of Covenant Place.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, he was a son of the late Frank K. White and the late Helen Dailey White Powell.

Mr White was a member of First Baptist Church. He attended the University of Alabama. He was retired Manager of J.C. Penney’s with 33 years of service. He was an avid supporter and fund raiser at USC-Sumter.

Surviving are two sons, James F. White, Jr. and wife Lois of San Francisco, California and Robert M. White and wife Jeanne of Greenville; a daughter, Virginia Snipes and husband Doug of Greenville; two sisters, Elizabeth Davis and Mary Evelyn McDonald both of Tennessee; 5 grandchildren, Robert M. White, Jr., Leigh White Williams, Amy Michelle White, Sarah Elizabeth White and James Nathan Copenhaver; two great-grandchildren, Alexandra Mackenzie White and Tyler Jacob White.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday at First Baptist Church.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to USC-Sumter, 200 Miller Road, Sumter, S. C. 29150.

Ruby Carroll Hammell
1964-2004
Ruby Carroll Hammell, 40, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at her home.

Born in Bradenton, Florida, she was a daughter of the late Richard Carl Hammell and the late Gwendolyn Priscilla Hodge Hammell.

Ms. Hammell was a Baptist and was employed by Cooper Tools.

Surviving are two sons, Richie Pollock and Travis Pollock both of Sumter; five daughters, Kimberly Pollock of Sumter, Crystal Ashworth of Summerville, Crystal Fouche, Kayli Fouche and Tiffany Fouche of Sumter; three sisters, Roberta Christine Gould of Boston, Mass., Cindy Carberry-Bowen of Columbia, and Rachelle Lynch of Sumter; her companion, Jeff W. Fouche of Sumter; and 3 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Monday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Johnny King officiating.

Burial will be in Hodge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 P.M. Sunday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at 3650 Nazarene Church Road.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S. C. 29150 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S. C. 29210.

Frank Jeremiah Connelly, Jr.
1922-2004
Sumter, S. C.
Frank Jeremiah Connelly, Jr.,82, husband of Anne Billy Warren Connelly, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte, N. C.

Born in Staten Island, New York, he was a son of the late Frank J. Connelly, Sr. and the late Katherine Conner Connelly.

Mr. Connelly was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Morganton, N. C. He was past President of the Catholic Charities of Western, N.C. He was a retired Chemical Engineer with Hercules, Inc. with 30 years of service and was a member of the American Chemical Engineer Society. He was a U. S. World War II veteran. He served with the 82nd. Airborne 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment in France.

Surviving are his wife of Valdese, N.C.; two sons, Michael F. Connelly and wife Laurie of Atlanta, Ga. and Robert W. Connelly and wife Lynn of Wake Forest, N.C.; a daughter, Cameron Humphrey and husband Robert of Charlotte, N.C.; his sister-in-law, Julia Warren Hoar and husband John of Sumter; and 3 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 4:30 P.M. Monday at the Sumter Cemetery with Father Daniel Carboy, C.Ss.R. officiating.

Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery

Memorials may be made to Burke Christian Ministries in Morganton, N.C.

Holden Lee Shaw
1991-2004
Holden Lee Shaw, 12, died Saturday, July 10, 2004 at the Medical Center of Georgia in Macon, Ga.

Born in Columbia, he was a son of Stella Sims Shaw.

Holden was a member of Shiloh Pentacostal Holiness Church and was a sixth grade student at Alice Drive Middle School.

Surviving are his mother of Sumter; one brother, Bobby Joe McKnight serving in the U.S. Army in Korea; his paternal grandmother, Johnnie Mae Holden of Aiken, S.C.; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel McKnight.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Driggers and the Rev. Franklin Morris officiating.

Burial will follow in the Cades Pentacostal Holiness Church Cemetery in Cades, S.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of his aunt, 104 Morgan Ave.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Sims, Jr., Ray Sims, Jr., John Coward, Jr., Allen Frey, Chris Butler and Bryan Belles.

Edwin Wilson, 78, husband of Fannie Billups Wilson, died Monday, July 19, 2004 at the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Edwin Wilson, Sr. and the late Grace Reynolds Wilson.

Mr. Wilson was a retired Sales Manager with Bill Schultz Chevrolet Company in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Surviving are his wife of Manning; two sons, Ed Wilson and wife Sandy and Jerry Wilson of Sumter; a sister, Pat Brown and husband Murr of Sumter; 4 step-children, Paula Bramlett and James Stewart both of Florence, Beth Bennett and Patricia Holcombe of North Carolina; 2 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

1914-2004
Modena Hood, 90, died Saturday, July 24, 2004 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Hood and the late Maggie Lou Oxendine Hood.

Miss Hood was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are one sister, Nina Lee Benenhaley of North Augusta, S.C. and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday at Long Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Carroll Waddell, Dr. Eleazer Benenhaley and Rev. Charles Carter officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Clayton Benenhaley, Wilbur Benenhaley, Timothy Benenhaley, Robby Carter, David Hood, Calvin Still and Harvey Hood.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Men’s Sunday School Class at Longbranch Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Monday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
