Elizabeth Rich Witherspoon, 68, wife of Joseph Thomas Witherspoon, Jr., died Saturday, July 24, 2004 at Tuomey Healthcare System.

Born in Manning she was a daughter of the late Colclough Chovine Rich and the late Ruby Elise Bradham Rich.

Mrs. Witherspoon was a lifetime member of Concord Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the church choir. She was a retired nurse and a Hospice volunteer.

Surviving are her husband of Gable, S.C., a sister, Gloria Rich Hickman of Manning; a grandson, Robert Blake of Maine; and numerous Nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Thomas Witherspoon, III.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Monday at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Albert officiating.

Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00 P.M. Monday at the Concord Presbyterian Church.

Sandra Elaine Lloyd Epps
1954-2004
Sandra Elaine Lloyd Epps, 49, widow of Erwin I. Epps, died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late William Leon Lloyd and the late Virginia Fields Lloyd.

Surviving are three sons, Robert Taylor of Carthage, New York, Michael Taylor and Charles Epps both of Sumter; a daughter, Michelle Epps of Sumter; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Hemingway officiating.

Burial will be in the Zoar Community Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1665 Mims Road.

Dorothy Thigpen Galloway
1931-2004
Dorothy Thigpen Galloway, 72, widow of Robert Galloway, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at a local nursing home.

Born in Georgetown, she was the daughter of Gladys Thigpen Gibbons and the late Shelley Thigpen. She was previously married to Clarence DuBose.

Surviving are her mother of Sumter; three daughters, Patsy DuBose Garrison of Myrtle Beach, Kathy DuBose Warren and husband Toby of Sumter, Pamela DuBose Sharp and husband Harley of Cary, NC; three sisters, Donna Ray Rabon and husband George, Brenda Geddings and husband Ralph, Shelley Bendel and husband Jim all of Sumter; two brothers, Bobby Thigpen and wife Eloise of Charleston and Danny Thigpen and wife Shirley of Columbia; 9 grandchildren, Kari Buckner, Tracy Williams, Justin Lewis, Mark DuBose, Missy Gentry, Gary DuBose, Tammy Davis, Eric DuBose and Toby Warren, Jr.; 9 great grandchildren, Landon, Gabrielle, Zack, Megan, Elizabeth, Brandon, Sawyer, Summer and Savannah.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne DuBose and Ricky DuBose; and a daughter Beverly Kay.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Huggins and the Rev. Robert Morris officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Justin Lewis, Eric DuBose, Gary DuBose, Billy Davis, Toby Warren, Jr. and Donny Buckner.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her granddaughter Tammy, 1308 Boulevard Rd.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Assoc. Columbia Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.

Megan Anne Bevan
1958-2004
Megan Anne Bevan, 46, wife of Darryl J. Hatheway, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S. C. after an extended illness with cancer.

Born in Charlotte, N.C., she was a daughter of Louise Dabbs Bevan and the late John M. Bevan.

Upon graduating from Swarthmore College in 1980, Megan joined the staff of National Geographic, beginning as a writer-researcher in Educational Media and then in Educational Films. She came to National Geographic Television in 1984 as a senior scriptwriter for the newly launched National Geographic Explorer series and was quickly promoted to Associate Producer for Explorer’s host studio shoots.

Known not only for her personal integrity, but also as an embodiment of the National Geographic institutional ethos, Megan was the logical choice to create, then direct Explorer’s Research Department from 1986 to 1990. In 1991 she took over management of Explorer studio production, a complex job involving studio production between Washington, DC and New York, directing a crew of directors, script writers, and set designers.

She was promoted to Vice President for all National Geographic broadcast and syndicated series which included numerous series domestically and extensive international distribution in a period of worldwide expansion for National Geographic Television. Megan became an integral part of the programming team that developed the schedule line-up for the launch of the National Geographic Channel, now one of the fastest growing cable channels in the U.S. market.

Besides her husband and mother, Megan is survived by two stepsons, Dylan and Nigel Hatheway and a stepdaughter, Colette Beers; two sisters, Brenda Bevan Remmes and her husband Bill of the Salem Black River Community; and Elizabeth Bevan and her husband Dan Clodfelter of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, John Bevan, Jr. and his wife Kathryn of Great Falls, Va.; and six nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday at Salem Black River Presbyterian Church, Mayesville.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:30 P.M. Friday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the Bevan home on Brick Church Road, Mayesville.

Memorials may be made to Salem Black River Cemetery Association, in care of Mrs. John Wilson, 81 Nash Street, Sumter, SC 29150, to the Brick Church Building Fund in care of the Treasurer, 26 West Sumter Street, Mayesville, SC 29104 or to the Bevan Scholarship Fund at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Fla. 33733.

Naomi Georgia
Pastor Naomi “Gertrude” Georgia, 53, widow of John Georgia Sr., died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at her residence.

Born Nov. 14, 1949, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Issac Dallas and Marie Bethune Dallas. In her youth, she was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church. She was a former member of Clarendon School District 1 School Board and a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School, Class of 1968.

Survivors include two sons, John D. Georgia Jr. and Abraham E. Georgia of the home; two daughters Michelle Smith of Baltimore and Detrice (Desmond) Brown of Summerton; two brothers, William (Doris) Dallas of Port Chester, N.Y., and Johnnie (Helen) Dallas of White Plains, N.Y.; two sisters, Ellea (Lonnie) Evans of Newton, Miss., and Yvette (Bernard) Jones of Spring Valley, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and Mrs. Willie Mae Elma Jackson of the home.

Services were at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, and Bishop Jeffery Johnson officiating, assisted by the Revs. Albert Thomas, Ernest Brown, John Gilliam, and Calvin Jackson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included friends of the family.

Honorary pallbearers were ministers.

Floral bearers were friends of the family and honorary missionaries.

Virginia G. Hemingway
Virginia Gibbons Hemingway, 86, widow of Alfred Dixon “A.D.” Hemingway, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, in Bishopville.

Born July 7, 1916, in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late Thaddeus Eugene and Laura Gardner Gibbons. She ran Rickenbaker’s Store in Davis Station for 28 years and was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Davis Station.

Survivors include a daughter, Lula Dell Brunson and son-in-law, Charlie of Manning; three half-sisters, Doris Bright and Christine Chitwood of Ballentine, and Irma Frye of West Columbia; five grandchildren, Jenny B. Tallon and Charlene B. Houser of Bishopville, Charlie Edward Brunson Jr., and Christopher Duke Brunson of Manning, and William Everett Brunson of Sumter; ten great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thaddeus Eugene Gibbons and a sister, Marian G. Clamp.

Services were at 4 p.m., Sunday, June 1, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Mac Hemingway and B.R. Wallace officiated. Burial followed in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Dixon Dallas Houser, Denis Glenn Howell, Donovan Gardner Howell, Drake Eldridge Brunson, Daniel Matthew Brunson, Henley Hemingway, John Wyatt Tallon III and Williams Daniel Everett Brunson. Honorary pallbearers were H.B. Rickenbaker, J.W. Sconyers, Mitchell Richburg and W.E. Horton.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Gladys B. Griffin, 1372 White Oak Drive, Manning, S.C. 29102, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C., 29202-7044.

Mack Hilton Sr.
Mack Hilton Sr., husband of Mrs. Mamie Essie Hilton, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at his home.

Born Feb. 10, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Rev. Joe Hilton and Mrs. Margaret Stukes Hilton. He was a deacon at Mount Calvary FBH Church and was also one of the musicians. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Burris Refrigerated Services of Sumter.

Survivors include his wife of Manning; five sons, Mack Hilton Jr. of Chile, South America, Kenneth Hilton (Mary) of Sumter, Michael Hilton (Andrea) of Bloomfield, Conn., Carlos Hilton of Florence and Harold Whack (Janie) of Hampton, Va.; four daughters, Doris Hilton and Cherene Hilton of Columbia, Rosa Hilton of Sumter and Joann Billie (Phillip) of Manning; an adopted daughter, Stacey Salters of Manning; three brothers, Joe Hilton II (Hattie) of Akron, Ohio, and the Rev. Cecil Hilton (Sally) and Levan Hilton (Chinese) of Manning; a mother-in-law, Mrs. Lucille McKnight of Sumter; and 21 grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2003, at Green Hill Baptist Church with Bishop A. Simmons, the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, Annie Whack, Ethel Sweat, W.C. Wilks and Carlos Williams officiating. Burial followed in Mount Zero Baptist Church Cemetery.

Henry L. James
Neptune, N.J. – Henry L. James, 68, husband of Audrey L. Mitchell James, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at his residence in Neptune, N.J..

Born Dec. 14, 1934, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Thomas and Maebell Benjamin James. He was an active member of Antioch UME Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He sang in the quartet choir. Before retiring in 2001, he was employed as a machine operator for more than 40 years. He worked for the Mansville Construction Co. and later for Stacy Construction Co. (now known as Precision Construction). He was a member of the United Masonic Brotherhood, Inc. For the past 46 years, he resided in New Jersey.

Survivors, besides his wife, include one son, Richard A. James of Neptune, N.J.; four daughters, Diane English of Columbia, Toinete Kirk of Asbury Park, N.J., Linda Aaron of Columbia and Cheryl James-Williams of Neptune; one brother, William James of Lansing, Mich.; four sisters, Bessie Junious of Pinewood, Dorothy Lane of Lansing, Mable James of New York City and Ruth King of Lansing; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, John.

Services were at 4 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Antioch UME Church, Rimini. The Rev. Jonathan Smith officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
