Minnie Ida C. Mack
Minnie Eda Caldwell Mack, 99, widow of Deacon Dean Mack Sr., died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born May 10, 1904, in the St. Paul and Davis Crossroad section of Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Junious and Amanda Josephine Briggs Caldwell. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined Taw Caw Baptist Church in Summerton. After her family moved to Manning, she joined the Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, serving on the deaconess board, missionary board and the senior choir.

Survivors include one son, Dean Mack Jr. of Manning; two daughters, Virginia Bowman of Manning and Helen (Thomas) James of Summerton; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 23 great- great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four children, James Edward Mack, Ellison Mack, Martha McFadden and Mary Fulton.

Services were Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Fourth Crossroads Church, Manning. The Rev. G.K. Carter, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Revs. J.H. Richburg, G.P. Windley Sr., and J.H. Pringle. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included the men of the church and friends of the family.

Floral bearers included the women of the church and friends of the family.

Henry Solomon
Ocala, Fla. – Henry Solomon, 81, husband of Aletha Dowdy Solomon and widower of Naomi Carter Solomon, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Palm Garden Nursing Home, Ocala.

Born Oct. 15, 1921, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Gus and Elease Boyd Solomon. He was a faithful member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church until his health failed.

In 1940, he was married to the late Naomi Carter Solomon and to this union two children were born, Elease Solomon of Summerton and Henry Solomon of Birmingham, Ala. In the late 1950’s, he married Letha Doughty and to this union four children were born, Henrietta, Lee, and Daniel Solomon of Ocala, and Paul Solomon of Detroit. His other children are Gloria Hart, Geneva Taylor, David Parson, Johnny Parson, Dorothy Parson, Carolyn Martin, and Cindy House of Summerton; Charlie Lawson, Evonne Parson and Michael Johnson, of New York; Kelvin Robinson, Sylvester Robinson, John Robinson and Charlie Green, of North Carolina; the Rev. Charlie Thomas of Sumter; Susie Becastro of Gainesville, Fla.; and Regina Mack of San Diego. Other survivors include 15 stepchildren; one brother, Birnie Blanding of Silver; one sister, Sarah Solomon of Orangeburg; 80 grandchildren; 107 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Maggie Robinson of Summerton. He was preceded in death by four children, Carl Hart, Ronnie Hart, Birnie Briggs and a baby girl.

Services were 1 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating, the Rev. Powell Hampton, eulogist, and assisted by the Rev. Charlie Thomas.

Burial followed in Solomon plot of Brown Cemetery, Panola.

Ellie L. Reardon
Ellie Loyd Reardon, 67, died Friday, November 1, 2002, in a Kingstree hospital after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Phillip Boone Reardon and Mary Lorena Burns Reardon. He was a retired farmer and service station manager and a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Mae Gibbons Reardon of New Zion; two sons, Loyd Jonathan Reardon and James Phillip Reardon of Kingstree; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Grace Reardon of Kingstree; a sister, Alma Nell Welch of Goose Creek; two brothers, William Boyd Reardon of Lockhart and George Carroll Reardon of Walterboro; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Midway Presbyterian Church with Dr. Rodney Foster and the Rev. John Hudson officiating.

Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home of Kingstree.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church or the American Diabetes Association.

Mannie W. Rickenbaker Jr.
Columbia - Mannie Wilson “Buck” Rickenbaker Jr., 84, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002.

Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late Mannie Wilson Rickenbaker Sr. and Norvelle Briggs Rickenbaker. He was a 1941 graduate of Clemson Agricultural College. He retired from civilian service as Chief of Utilities at Fort Jackson. He was also a WWII veteran and retired Lt. Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was a member of the Col. Thomas Taylor Chapter of the South Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, The Society of First Families of South Carolina, and St. Martin’s-In-The-Fields Episcopal Church.

Survivors include a son, Mannie Wilson Rickenbaker III of Lexington; a daughter, Caroline Carson Rickenbaker of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Henry Burchell Rickenbaker of Summerton; two sisters, Mary Middleton of Columbia and Lila Henry of Gaston; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Martin’s-In-The-Fields Episcopal Church with the Revs. William W. Wight and Peter Sibande officiating.

Burial followed in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Pinewood, S.C.

Memorials may be made to St. Martin’s In-The-Fields Episcopal Church, 5220 Clemson Ave., Columbia, S.C. 29206 or St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 129 Church St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

David H. Bowers
David Howard Bowers, husband of Laura Flanders Bowers, entered rest the afternoon of Tuesday, July 15, 2003. He was a resident of North Charleston.

Born March 7, 1951, in Charleston, Bowers was the son of Charles Nelson Bowers and Della Hodge Bowers. He was an application engineer with Johnson Controls Inc. and chairman of the North Charleston Zoning Board. Bowers was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps.

Survivors include, besides his wife, a son, D. Tobias; two daughters, Sarahann Della and Elizabeth Lloyd of Charleston; a brother, Charles Nelson Bowers Jr. of Mt. Pleasant; three sisters, Helen C. Bowers of Lexington, Dorothy B. Turbeville of Manning and Caroline B. Willis of Fayetteville, N.C.

A memorial service was held at Greenridge Road Chapel, Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m.

Memorial may be made in lieu of flowers to Honey Creek Conference Center, 299 Conference Center Road, Waverly, GA 31565.

Leona J. Hudson
Leona James Hudson, 93, widow of Harry Hudson Sr., died Monday, July 28, 2003.

Born Oct. 11, 1909, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Hannibal James and Octavia McFadden James. She was educated at the Congruity Parochial School. She was a lifelong member of Congruity Presbyterian Church, having served as a deacon, trustee and member of the senior choir. She was also a member of YWCA Lodge No. 22. She was the founder of the Community Tiny Tots Savings Club and Feed-A-Child program.

Survivors include four sons, Harry Hudson Jr. (Rosa) of Baltimore, Carnell Hudson (Ruby) and Leroy Hudson of Roxburg, Mass., and Raleigh Hudson of Bronx, N.Y.; a grandson she reared as her own, Steve Hudson (Angela) of Atlanta; three daughters, Ruth Epps and Louise Epps (Lewis) of Alcolu, and Catherine Wilson (Furman) of Baltimore; two granddaughters she reared as her own, Gwendolyn Harris (Donald) of Charlotte, N. C., and Doris Felder of Manning; two brothers, Robert James (Bascom) of Gable and Johnny James of Sumter; one sister, Ruby Billie of Gable; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a god daughter, Francina Johnson of Manning.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Freddie Hudson; three sons, Thomas James, Robert Hudson, and Herman Hudson; two daughters, Francis Hudson and Mildred James; five brothers, Aaron James, Leo James, Gilbert James, William James and Raymond James; and four sisters, Lucinda McBride, Josephine Clark, Almeta Miller and Alice James.

Services were held at noon Saturday, August 2, at Congruity Presbyterian Church USA, 3750 Congruity Road, Sumter.

The Rev. William Jones officiated the service assisted by Dr. R. E. Bligen and the Revs. Emma Thompson, W. J. Frierson and Jonathan Anderson.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Tommy H. Wampler Sr.
Tommy Hayden Wampler Sr., 70, husband of Joyce Banks Wampler, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born March 9, 1933, in Millstone, Ky., he was the son of the late Abe and Elease Smedley Wampler. He was a member of the Clarendon Church of God and a Korean War Army Veteran.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, includes one son; Tom H. Wampler II (Debbie) of Manning, two daughters; Lynn Stewart and Jean Justice of Manning; four grandsons, Tommy H. Wampler III, Harry L. Stewart III, Travis Justice and Frankie Wampler of Manning; four brothers, Jimmy Wampler of Ohio, Curtis Wampler of Ind., Franklin Wampler of Ind. and Cecil Wampler of Ky.; five sisters, Lelia Burton of Ind., Phyllis Thacker, Cleo Holbrook and Sheila Boggs of Ky., and Sondra Adams of Ohio.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 31, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 2, at Banks Peaceful Hills Cemetery in Whitesburg, Ky.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Church of God.

John P. Jefferson
Pinewood - John Peter Jefferson, husband of Mary Green Jefferson, 65, died Saturday, December 28, 2002, at his home in Rimini.

Born Jan. 9, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Charlie Briggs and Lillie Richardson James. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Antioch UME Church.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, Robert Lee Jefferson of Pinewood, Johnny Lee Jefferson of Greensboro, N.C., and Richard Jefferson of Ft. Stewart, Ga.; three daughters, Canza Green Jefferson and Elease Jefferson of Pinewood and Ernestine J. Robinson of Thomasville, N.C.; four brothers, Ransom Richardson, Charlie Briggs, Henry Lee Briggs and Ransom Briggs of Pinewood; four sisters, Mary McCall and Sara Puryear of Irvington, N.J., and Margaret Watson and Doris B. Green of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Antioch UME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Willie Green, James Robinson and Amos Hatcher.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pearlene E. Hinkle
Pearlene E. “Beth” Hinkle, 42, died Saturday, January 11, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 12, 1960, in Youngstown, OH., she was the daughter of Harry F. and Pearlene Wagner Vinion. She was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors besides her parents of Youngstown include two sons, John Charles Miller of Summerton, and Daniel G.K. Miller of Youngstown, Ohio; four sisters, Linda Reese, Diane Sztory and Robin Rusu of Youngstown, and Roxanne Olivarez of Dumas, Texas; three brothers, Robert Vinion, Russell Vinion, and Brian Vinion, of Youngstown; three granddaughters, Kelci, Amity, and Lisa; and special companions, Walter L. Campbell Jr. and W. Louise Campbell of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Lisa Marie Miller.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Youngstown, Ohio.

Blanche A. Niderost
Blanche Alsbrooks Niderost, 74, died Tuesday, January 21, 2003, in a Darlington Health Care facility after an extended illness.

Born in Turbeville, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry Blaney and Winnie Belle Hodge Alsbrooks. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Brent (Linda) Chitwood of Irmo, S.C.; two sisters, Ruby Alsbrooks Mouzon of Florence and Gerdene Streett of Kingstree, S.C.; one grandchildren, Bryan Chitwood; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Carl Wayne Niderost.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbia.

Charlie Randolph Disher
SUMTER -- Charlie Randolph Disher, 79, husband of Linda Holladay Disher, died Friday, January 18, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born Jan. 1, 1923, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Calhoun C. and Maggie Osborne Disher. He was retired from C.P. Chemicals and Booth Boyle Tractor and was a member of Little White Church in Greeleyville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Charlie Randolph “Randy” Disher Jr. and William Louis Disher of Sumter; a daughter, Linda Gayle Nobles of Sumter; two sisters, Louise Browder of Greeleyville and Ruby McCracken of Kingstree; a brother, Billy Disher of Manning; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Walter Disher, J.C. “Tiny” Disher, Coley Disher and Donald Disher; and a sister, Mellie McKnight.

Services were 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. John Patrick officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Graham Baptist Church in Sumter.
