Benjamin F. Hodge
Benjamin F. Hodge, 54, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born May 2, 1948, in Manning, he was the son of the late James W. and Fannie DuBose Hodge. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a carpenter, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include four sisters, Kathryn Winningham of Eutawville, Betty Yurgalavage of Warner Robbins, Ga., Linda Cutter of Eutawville and Marian Worrell of Manning; five brothers, Henry Hodge, Perry Hodge and Walter Hodge of Manning, James A. Hodge of Alcolu and Scott H. Hodge of Greeleyville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Purvis, and a brother, Charles H. Hodge.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Emmett Ard and Stephen Bowe officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Frances W. McBride
Florence - Frances Lurline Waddell McBride, 94, a resident of the Methodist Manor of The Pee Dee, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Born in Darlington County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Francis Nash Waddell Sr. and the late Susan Frances Gilchrist Waddell. She was a 1926 graduate of Tans Bay School and a 1929 graduate of the McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Joy Anderson Circle, the Chancel Choir, the Chopin Music Club and the Quill Club. She was formerly employed as the School Nurse for Florence County, as Night Supervisor at the McLeod Infirmary during the war, was employed for many years with Drs. Myers Hicks and Harry Allen Jr. and later for Dr. Howard Stokes. She retired from nursing at the age of 80.

Survivors include two daughters, Sally M. Shupe and husband, John A. Shupe, of Summerton and Bonnie M. Ashcroft and her husband, George Ashcroft, of Whitakers, N.C.; two sisters, Kathleen (Al) Roland of Florence and Sybil Mills of Effingham, S.C.; a brother, Dean (Margaret) Waddell of Florence; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a number of nieces and nephews; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Blackwell D. McBride; a daughter, Novis Lurline Ward; two sisters, Genevieve Best and Helen Anderson; and four brothers, Skip Waddell, Royce Waddell, Frank Waddell Jr. and Ted Waddell.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday in Central United Methodist Church.

Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 205, Columbia, S.C. or to the American Heart Association, 181 E. Evans St., Florence, S.C. or to the Central United Methodist Church, 225 W. Cheves St., Florence, S.C.

Sadie P. Nelson
Sumter - Sadie Bell Pearson Nelson, 85, widow of George “J.W.” Nelson, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Hopewell Nursing Home in Sumter.

Born March 14, 1917, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Ella Pearson. She received her formal education from Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Laurel Hill AME Church in Davis Station and attended faithfully when she was able.

Survivors include two conservators, Shirley Umstead of Durham, N.C. and Beulah Parson of Davis Station; two grandnieces, Sandra Moore and Monica Pearson; and two grandnephews, William Eugene Pearson and Raymond Perry of Baltimore.

She was preceded in death by her brother, William Eugene Pearson, and nephew William Edward “Bob” Pearson.

Services were held at noon Tuesday at Laurel Hill AME Church in Davis Station with the Rev. Ronnie Brown officiating, assisted by the Rev. Norman Umstead Jr.

Burial followed in Hopkins Cemetery in Davis Station.

Sherlene B. Newman
Sherlene Berry Newman, 68, widow of Samuel Myles Newman Sr., died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born April 10, 1934, in Greenwood, she was the daughter of the late Robert George and Edna Tobias Berry. She was a retired nursing assistant and a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel “Myles” Newman Jr. and wife, Libby, of Gilbert and Gerald “Todd” Newman of Manning; two daughters, Lisa N. Blend and husband, Craig, of Manning and Janet Newman of Columbia; five grandchildren, Leigh Newman, Katie Newman, Jon Myles Newman, Paige Blend and Sam Blend; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Concord Presbyterian Church in Sumter County with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Marion D. Riley
Sumter - Marion Douglas Riley, 61, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Feb. 2, 1942, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mrs. Louise Riley and the late Mr. Smith Riley. He received his education from Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Bracey Riley, of the home; two daughters, Betty Ruth Billups and her husband, Anthony, and Mrs. Mary Ruth Hastie of Sumter; one brother, Steve Riley and his wife, Thelma, of Paxville; five stepbrothers, George Robinson, Leon Riley, Lee Riley, David Riley and Robert Riley; two sisters, Viola Lee of Portsmouth, Va. and Margie Pearson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and five stepsisters, Eller Wilson, Shirley Ann Bore, Edith Amos, Emma Lee and Ella Williams.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Marvin Hodge officiating.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Rosa T. White
Rosa Lee Thomas White, 80, widow of Willard White Sr., died Monday, April 7, 2003, at 204 Hospital St., Wisteria Way, Apt. 7-B.

Born Sept. 15, 1922, in the Gable section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Mary Richardson Thomas.

She received her formal education at the Goodwill Parochial School in Mayesville. She moved to Baltimore and was employed by several restaurants and hotels as a cook where she had an excellent reputation. Later she moved home to take care of her mother until her death. She became a member of Melina Presbyterian Church in Gable. She was a member of the senior choir and a member of the deacons board.

Survivors include a son, Chilton “Charles” (Alice) Thomas of Baltimore; a daughter, Gloria (James) McDonald of Detroit; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Thomas, Raliegh Thomas and Mail Thomas; a son, Ben Thomas; and a sister, Geneva Witherspoon.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Melina Presbyterian Church in Gable with the Rev. Carnell Hampton officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Joe W. Altman Jr.
Lynchburg - Joe “Joey” W. Altman Jr., 28, husband of Cynthia G. Gibson Altman, died on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born in Manning, he was the son of Joe “J.W.” and Mae C. Altman of Lynchburg. He was the owner and operator of Altman Irrigation & Landscaping. He was a graduate of Roy Hudgens Academy and was honored in Who’s - Who in American Business. He received a Heroic Award for Lifesaving and was a member of the Sportsman Hunting Club. He attended the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to his wife and parents include a brother, Gene Altman of Lynchburg; maternal grandparents, Elbert and Carolyn Coleman of Lynchburg; a great-aunt, Annette Coker; four aunts and uncles, Ted and Betty Coleman, John and Wendy Sharp, J.D. and Laura Coleman of Lynchburg, and Jay and Cindy Coleman of Florence; special cousins, Jessica Coleman, Kayce Coleman, Andy Coleman, Lee Coleman, Brad Miller and Lacey Miller; and four special friends, Jim Keels, Bobby Jamison, Russell Logan and James Welch.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mary Altman Morris and Troy Altman.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 1000 Pleasant Grove Road in Lynchburg with the Rev. Robert L. Griggs officiating.

Burial followed in the Friendship Cemetery in Lynchburg.

Pallbearers were Chris Logan, Jim Keels, Bobby Jamison, James Welch, Rusty Graham, Russell Logan, Jerry Windham and Billy Atkinson.

Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Sportsman Hunting Club.

Minister Alphonso Bennett
Minister Alphonso “Teet” Bennett, 58, husband of Kathleene “Cat” Ragin Bennett, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at his home.

Born Jan. 14, 1945, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mother Queen “Ester” Bennett and the late Josephus Bennett. He was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He was employed by the SCDOT for 30 years where he retired Feb. 6, 2001. He was a lifelong member of Prayer House Mission. He served on the deacon board, the PHM Young Adult Choir, male chorus, and the Gospel Train Male Chorus until he was called to the ministry.

Survivors include three sons, Jesse (Tammy) Ragin of Columbia, John (Landunette) Ragin of Sumter and Lorenzo Ragin of the home; a daughter, Deidra (Ricky) Coard of Summerton; three brothers, Nathaniel Bennett, Warren (Helen) Bennett and John (Daisy) Bennett of Summerton; four sisters, Pheobe Brunson of Manning, Idell Howell of Elloree, and B. Londell Bannister and Gladys Robinson of Summerton; and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by two foster sons, Michael Bennett and Charles Harrison of Manning.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Prayer House Mission in the Davis Crossroads community with Elder J. Gilliam, pastor, and pastor Elaine Bennett officiating, assisted by Elder James Robinson, Dr. W.T. Johnson and the Rev. J.W. Pringle.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were the church deacons and members of the Gospel Train.

Floral bearers were friends of the family.

Joy T. Brewer
Joy Sue Thames Brewer, 49, beloved wife of Thomas G. “Tom” Brewer Jr., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in a Columbia hospital.

Born March 29, 1954 in Sumter, she was the daughter of Frank A. and Athlene Hodge Thames. She was a city clerk for the Town of Manning for 16 years, a faithful, lifelong member and Children’s Worship Leader of Providence Baptist Church, volunteer for Rolling Readers, member of United Daughters of the Confederacy, and in 1981 she was the first volunteer for The Worldwide Research Program for Diabetes Control and Complications Trials.

Survivors include her parents of Sumter; husband of Manning; her loving son and daughter-in-law, Thomas G. “Tommy” Brewer III and wife, Shanna, of Manning; a sister, Hope T. Turner and husband, Bob, of Sumter; two brothers, Jeffrey Thames and wife, Diane, and Andy Thames and wife, Donna of Manning; a grandson, Thomas G. Brewer “Quinn” IV, whom she lovingly called Baby Dumplin; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty and Thomas G. Brewer Sr.; special sister-in-law, Margaret Brewer; and many other family members and friends.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 18, in Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Harold Greene and the Revs. Jerry Neil Hodge, Gene Mosier and John Hall officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included Shayne White, Keith Hodge, Jerry Wayne Cockerill, L. Keith Josey Jr., Dean Peet, Russell Elmore and Dr. Bert Eagerton.

Honorary Pallbearers included the Deacons of Providence Baptist Church, Marie Gates, Loretta Pollard, The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Baptist Young Women of Providence Baptist Church, Rosa Miles, Shannon Pack, Juanita Pack and Stacey McDonald.

Memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church Building Fund, 2445 Old Manning Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.
