Mattie T. Evans
Mattie Corine Harrison Taylor Evans, 99, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born April 15, 1904, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Harrison and Mary Vertell Tomlin Harrison. She was first married to Edgar Taylor and second to Linwood Evans Sr. She received her formal education in the Harmony Parochial School in Alcolu. She was a lifelong member of Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu where she served on the senior choir, usher board and missionary society until her health failed.

Survivors include a son, Joe Lewis (Ida) Evans of Jamaica, N.Y.; three daughters, Shirley T. (Deacon Hazel) Evins and Celestine Myers, of Alcolu, and Irene (Ernest) Gamble of Sumter; two god-daughters, Gladys Wells of Sumter and Lillie McFadden of Norwalk, Conn.; a brother, Robert (Mary) Harrison of Hamden, Conn.; a sister, Louise (Willie) Singleton of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Mildred R. Harrison Jiniwright of Sumter; 32 grandchildren; and a host of great-grands and great-great-grands.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Linwood Evans Jr. and Haley Evans.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Mount Nebo Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Albertus Smiling and Jonathan Anderson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Eva L. Dyson
Eva Lee Dyson, 92, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Center.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late David Lawrence Dyson and the late Carrie Lee Dyson.

Survivors include a niece, Eloise Moore in Manning.

Services will be private.

Sarah Spry
Sarah Spry, 96, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Summerton.

Born July 10, 1906, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Carrie Spry, but she was reared by the McDuffie family. She was a member of the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She spent most of her life taking care of the children of the C.W. Corbett family of Paxville.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Crawford of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Everlena McDuffie of Paxville; one niece, Mary Lee Pringle of Paxville; two nephews, Leroy McDuffie of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Eugene Robinson of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; the C.W. Corbett family of Paxville; seven great-nephews; and seven great-nieces.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in the Paxville community with the Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Cemetery, Paxville.

Pallbearers were Gussie Stokes, Major Stokes, William Corbett, Michael Corbett and two men of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Floral bearers were the ladies of the church.

Sylvia M. Sims
Sylvia Irene McIntosh Sims, 62, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Sept. 26,1940, in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late Earl McIntosh and the late Isabell Evans McIntosh Coker. She was a seamstress and was a member of New Town Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Lorrie Sims of Effingham and Becky McElveen of Turbeville; two sons, Donald Sims and Todd Sims of Kingstree; two brothers, Carson McIntosh of Fuller, Calif., and Joe McIntosh of Sumter; eleven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

A son, Scotty Sims, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Roger Tripp will officiate. Burial will follow in the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

Eugene K. Cave Sr.
Eugene K. Cave Sr., 63, husband of 29 years to Nancy Lee Smith Cave, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at his home in Summerton.

Born April 10, 1940, in Pawnee, Ill., he was the son of the late Floyd Eugene Cave and the late Thelma Artist Diller Cave. He was a graduate of Cochran High School in Cochran, Ga. He proudly served four years in the U.S. Navy, began his civil service career as an apprentice pipe fitter in Vallejo, Calif., and retired as a Shipyard Production Superintendent at Charleston Naval Shipyard in Charleston. He was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Manning, where he faithfully served in many capacities for the glory of God.

Survivors, besides his wife of Summerton, includes a daughter, Eugenia “Jeannie” Cave Johnson of Redding, Calif.; two sons, E. Kenneth Cave Jr., (Patricia Karen Mixon Cave) active duty U.S. Air Force of Mary Esther, Fla., and Alan Earl Cave (Pamela Rae Henderson Cave), electrical engineer of Hillsborough, N.C.; sisters, Barbara A. Cave Richards and Eleanor E. Cave Miner of Winter Haven, Fla.; mother-in-law, Faye M. Smith, of the home; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Johnson, Taylor D. Cave, and Kasey J. Cave.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 25, at Good Shepherd Baptist Church. The Rev. Esta G. Gilley officiated the service.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Pallbearers included O.T. “Rusty” Hobbs, Duncan Laney, Tad Resser, Robert A. Cheverie, Joseph Daning and Bruce Royer. Honorary pallbearers included E. F. “Bo” Meadows, Floyd Diller, Russell Diller, L. D. Boyce, and the Men of Good Shepherd Baptist Church.

Memorial may be made in lieu of flowers to Good Shepherd Baptist Church Tape Ministry, 1891 Oak Grove Church Road, Manning, SC 29102, or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, SC 29150.

Charlotte B. Carter
Mrs. Charlotte Bowman Carter, 63, wife of Mr. Lee Lewis Carter Sr., died, Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Providence Hospital, Columbia.

Born Sept. 1, 1939, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Mrs. Rosa Bowman and the late Mr. Robert Bowman.

She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a graduate of Morris College and taught in Clarendon School District 1 for several years and later worked with the Clemson Extension Program until retirement. She was a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church and Queen of South Chapter No. 304 OES.

Survivors, besides her husband, Mr. Lee Lewis Carter Sr., of Summerton include three sons; Attorney Eleazer R. Carter of Columbia, Lee Lewis Carter Jr. (Deborah) of Atlanta, and Patrick Carter (Bridgette) of Columbia; three daughters, Mary Ann Carter Washington of Washington, D.C., Cynthia James of Columbia, and Sarah E. Hilton (Joe) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four brothers, Robert Bowman (Albertha) of Sumter, Bertie (Elaine) Bowman of Washington, D.C., Larry Bowman (Lisa) of Baltimore, and Jimmy Bowman (Joyce) of Landover, Md.; three sisters, Annie House (Louis) of Summerton, Wilhelmenia Bennett (Robert) of Temple Hills, Md., and Dorothy Floyd (Ellis) of Upper Marlboro, Md.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday, June 27, at 2 p.m. at the Taw Caw Baptist Church, Summerton. The Rev. Drs. W. T. Johnson and C. Richburg officiated the service, along with the Rev. Martin Cunningham.

Burial followed in the Taw Caw Baptist Church Cemetery.

Marion Broadway
Marion Broadway, 84, husband of Eloise Vining Broadway, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at his home.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Lewis Broadway and the late Mary Alice Bradham Broadway.

Mr. Broadway was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church and served in the U. S. Navy during WWII.

Survivors include his wife of Manning; two sons, Steve Broadway (Linda), and Skip Broadway (Gail), of Manning; a brother, Wilkins Broadway of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A daughter, Sandra Kaye Broadway preceded him in death.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 28, at Open Bible Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Hummel officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers included John Carmichael, Paul Carmichael, Brian Broadway, Steven Dunn, Jimmy Broadway and Jerry Wood.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 325, Sumter, SC 29151.

Matthew T. Zimmerman
Matthew Trammell Zimmerman, 25, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at his home.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of Carrol Fredrick Zimmerman and Ramelle T. Coker. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Anderson.

Survivors include his father, Carroll Fredrick of Sumter; his mother Ramelle, and stepfather, Devon Coker of Turbeville; a sister, Hannah Zimmerman of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Robin Zimmerman of Sumter; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William V. Trammell of Anderson; his paternal grandmother, Louise Morrow of Pauline.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, at Floyd Funeral Home in Olanta.

Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Raymond E. Wells Jr.
Raymond Edwin Wells Jr., 78, husband of Sarah Frances Hancock Wells, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, in Mariner Healthcare West in Sumter.

Born Jan. 17, 1925, in Kingstree, he was the son of the late Raymond Edwin Wells Sr. and the late Louise Heins Wells. He attended Clemson University and was a US Army veteran of WWII. Mr. Wells was a retired farmer, a member of Manning United Methodist Church, where he was a former Sunday School teacher, lay leader, and member of the Men’s Bible School class, a member of American Legion Williams-Burgess Post #68, a scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 386, and a past school board member and chairman of Clarendon School District 2, board and chair member of the Vocational School, member and past chairman of Clarendon County Soil & Water Conservation for over 40 years, member of Land Resources Commission, and Commissioner Emeritus of S.C. Dept. of National Resources.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, include a daughter, Sarah F. “Fran” Wells; a son, Raymond Edwin (Karen) Wells III; and a grandson, Horton, of Manning.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 21, in Manning United Methodist Church. The Revs. Debra Quilling and Steve Shugart officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Williams-Burgess Post #68 and the Men’s Bible Class of Manning United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102.

Janie M. Watson
Janie Monroe Watson, 92, widow of George Watson, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Clarendon County on Nov. 13, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Johnnie Monroe Sr. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Liberty Hill AME Church, where she was affiliated with the following organizations: class leader, stewardess board, missionary and senior choir. She was also a member of the Queen of the South Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 304, Summerton.

Survivors include one brother, Johnnie (Sadie) Monroe Jr. of Springfield Garden, N.Y.; two sisters, Mazie Green of Washington, D.C., and Evangelist Valgean (Johnnie) Quzack of Summerton; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded by death by 11 sisters and brothers.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 17, at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton. The Rev. M.L. Duncan officiated, and was assisted by Elder Gwendolyn Taylor, Elder J. Gilliam, the Rev. Dr. James Gibbs, and Pastor V. Simpson Turner Jr.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included friends of the family. Honorary pallbearers included the Summerton Masonic Lodge No. 366.

Floral bearers included the Queen of the South Order of the Eastern Stars Chapter No. 304 and missionaries of the church.
