Johnnie L. Robinson Sr.
Johnnie Lee Robinson Sr., 84, widower of Carrie Riley Robinson, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Mariner Health Care West in Sumter.

Born on Sept. 15, 1918, in Manning, he was the son of the late Adeline Stukes and the late Jim Robinson. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Mt. Zero Baptist Church where he served as a member of the trustee board. He sang with several gospel groups, including the Gospel Tones.

Survivors include one son, Johnnie Lee (Margaret) Robinson Jr. of Sumter; four daughters, Adeline Robinson of Paxville, Dorothy (Charles) June of Manning, Willie Mae Robinson of Jamacia, N.Y., and Ann (Samuel) Johnson of Sumter; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. One daughter, three brothers, and five sisters preceded him in death.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 17 at Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Paxville. The Revs. Henry Presley, Major Lloyd and Ransy McFadden officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Carrol M. Plowden
Carrol M. Plowden, 85, widower of Violet Frances Bradham Plowden, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, in Hopewell Healthcare Center in Sumter.

Born Jan. 7, 1918, in Pineville, N.C., he was the son of the late Marcus Vivian Plowden and the late Edith McFaddin Plowden. He was a retired farmer, a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of WWII, and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Jackson (Tom) of Manning; a sister-in-law, Nanny Fry of Pineville, N. C.; two grandsons, William Marcus “Marc” Jackson of Myrtle Beach and Moultrie “Todd” Jackson of Manning; three great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. A daughter, Kathy Jean Plowden, preceded him in death.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Mon., June 23, in Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu. The Rev. Dr. Williams J. Holmes officiated the service.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers included Clarendon Baptist Church Deacons.

Memorial may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, Alcolu, SC 29001.

Ruby G. Hodge
Ruby Geddings Hodge, 78, wife of A. Clifton Hodge, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born Aug. 31, 1924, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Luther P. and Geneva Wise Geddings. She was a retired postmaster in Alcolu, and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church.

Survivors, besides her husband of Alcolu, include a son, Robbie Hodge of Manning; a daughter, Barbara (Jim) Walker of Surfside Beach; a sister, Catherine Bagnal of Mt. Airy, N.C.; four grandsons, Michael Gamble, Brian Gamble, Robb Hodge and Badge Baker.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, in Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu. The Revs. Norman Rogers and Dr. Joe Peek officiated.

Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, Alcolu, SC.

Joe L. Daney
BALTIMORE, Md. – Joe Louis Daney, 65, husband of Laura Lemon Daney, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Northwest Hospital, Randallstown, Md.

Born May 4, 1938, in the Alcolu community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Fleglar Daney and Carrie Mae Hilton Daney. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Cypress Fork AME Church. He moved to Baltimore in 1961 and was employed with Earl Scheib Auto Body Shop, retiring in 2001 due to his health.

Survivors besides his wife, Laura L. Daney of Baltimore, Md., include one son, Joe Lee Daney of Baltimore; five daughters, Carrie Lemon, Carolyn Ford, Cynthia Daney, Deborah Alexander, and Nicole Jenkins, of Baltimore; four brothers, James Daney of Baltimore, Earl Daney and Chris (Barbara) Daney, of Alcolu, and Glenwood Daney of New Jersey; eight sisters, Mable (Howard) Blackwell of Baltimore, Sylvester (Wayne) Brown and Evelyn Davis, of Alcolu, Pearl Dixon of Philadelphia, Eva (Julian) Blackwell of Virginia, Joann Daney and Priscilla Barki, of Atlanta, Ga., Gussie (Ed) Jergenson of Greenbay, Wis.; nine grandchildren; and on e great-grandchild. One sister, Lorye McCants preceded him in death.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2003, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning. The Rev. Leroy Green, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Franklin McCants.

Burial followed in Cypress Fork AME Church cemetery.

Carlisle W. Coskrey
Carlisle Walter Coskrey, 85, widower of Lillian Shaw Coskrey, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in Life Care Center of Charleston.

Born July 21, 1917, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Walter Washington and Maude Hilton Coskrey. He was a retired mechanic from Santee Motor Company, a member of Summerton Baptist Church, where he was Sunday School secretary for over 30 years, and was a lifelong mason, and a member of Summerton Lodge #105.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet (John) Reed of Goose Creek; two grandsons, Tim Reed of Goose Creek and John Reed of Frankfort, Ky.; two sisters Mary Bell of Hartsville and Thelma Furse of Sumter; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Claude M. Coskrey, preceded him in death.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2003, in Summerton Baptist Church. The Rev. Rob Pierce officiated.

Burial followed in the Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, SC 29148.

Wilma Burgess
Wilma Burgess, 67, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born May 27, 1936, in the Live Oak section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Occie Burgess. In her youth, she joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church. She attended the public schools of Mullins.

Survivors include special friend, Felix Damon of Manning; two daughters, Lois B. Anderson and Bonnie (Wilbert) Rawlinson, both of Manning; one brother, National “Carl” Burgess of Manning; two sisters, Mary Lou Pittman and Zelda Ellerba, of Manning; two grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Nellie, Susie Mae, Patricia, and Mary Ellen; one brother, Randy; and two adopted sons, Rickey and Anthony.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 18, at Mt. Zero Baptist Church. The Rev. Henry Pressley, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. J. Dupree and Bishop Richard Johnson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

D. Clyde Barrineau
KINGSTREE – D. Clyde Barrineau, 82, died Thursday in a Florence hospital.

Mr. Barrineau was born in Davis Station, and was the son of the late Robert and Lillian Jones Barrineau, and played semi-pro baseball in the Palmetto League before World War II. He was retired from Winslow Chevrolet and Farmers Telephone Co-op. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific, and was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a mason, Shriner, and a past worthy patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Barrineau was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church, having served on many boards and committees. His first wife, Eunice Covington Barrineau, and their son, Alton Barrineau preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Letita Huggins Barrineau; a stepdaughter Gayle Owens of Columbia; one brother Robert Barrineau of Charleston; sisters-in-law, Florence Harrington of Manning and Janice Russell of Sumter; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 20, 2003, in the Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Burial followed in the Kingstree Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Easter Star or to Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Camillia R. Autery
Camillia Richardson Autery, the daughter of the late Mr. Johnny and Mrs. Lula James Richardson, was one of 10 children. She was born in Summerton, on Nov. 1, 1925. She made her transition into eternal rest Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of James Autery.

Comillia’s Christian experience began at an early age when she became a member of St. Phillip RMUE Church, the family church in Summerton. She lived the majority of her time in New Jersey and New York, where she joined Bethany Baptist Church. She was a missionary and also sang in the choir.

She leaves to cherish her memories a loving daughter, Dorothy (Frederick) Murphy of Newark, N.J.; three grandchildren, Cathy, Frederick, and Kenneth Murphy of Newark, N.J.; two great grandchildren, Tameshiah (Lamont) Shipley of Suitland, Md., and Hassan Murphy of Newark, N.J.; three great-great-grandchildren, Quaniaya, Janara, and Hassan II Murphy; two sister, Marie Lewis and Mary (Allen) Brown of Summerton; two brothers, Johnnie (Ethel) Richardson of Summerton and Eddie (Queen Ester) Richardson of Irvington, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Richardson and Eula Richardson; an adopted daughter, Roberta Barnett of Roselle, N.J.; two goddaughters, Gertrude Kellam of Newark N.J., and Jeanette Thrope of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephew, relatives, and many friends.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 18, at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church. The Revs. Dr. Fred H. Moore, Powell Hampton Jr., and Minister Tameshiah Shipley.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included friends of the family. Honorary pallbearers included friends of the family.

Floral bearers included friends of the family.

Ross N. Andrews
Ross Norman Andrews, 38, died Friday, June 20, 2003, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born Nov. 10, 1964, in Nashville, Tenn., he was the son of Newell Zeb and Norma Silliman Andrews. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and earned a degree in turf management at Horry-Georgetown Technical College. He was a salesman for Simmons Irrigation Supply in Walterboro, and a member of Manning First Baptist Church. He was formerly employed as golf course superintendent in Vail, Colo., Steamboat Springs, Colo., Santa Rosa, Calif., and Gold Creek Resort in Ga.

Survivors include his parents of Manning; two brothers, Newell Zeb “Andy” (Sandra) Andrews III of Atlanta, and Richard Allen “Rick” (Sharon) Andrews of Myrtle Beach; his fiancé, Wanda Erickson of Manning; five nephews, and two nieces.

Services were at 5 p.m., Sunday, June 22, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Debra Quilling and Danny Bridges officiated the service.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorial may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102, or to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102.

Henretta B. Tillman
Thomasville, N.C. – Mrs. Henretta Brunson Tillman, 49, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, in Charlotte, N.C.

Born in Sumter County, Nov. 14, 1952, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Elease Brunson. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated in 1971 from Manning High School. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in her youth. After moving to Thomasville, she became a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert Brunson of Manning, and Samuel Brunson Jr., of Paxville.

Services were held Friday, June 13, at 2 p.m., at Friendship Baptist Church in Thomasville.

Everett B. Stokes Sr.
Everett Billy Stokes Sr., 67, husband of Mrs. Pearline Stokes, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at his residence.

Born Sept. 23, 1935, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mrs. Tallie Holliday Stokes and the late Mr. Bennie Stokes Sr. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed in New York City for several years and later returned to Manning in 1971.

Survivors besides his wife, include two sons, Everett Stokes Jr. and Ronald Stokes; two daughters, Carolyn Stokes-Sherod and Wandalyn Stokes; his mother Tallie Stokes; a brother, Mr. Bennie Stokes Jr. (Henretta) of Paxville; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Burial followed in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery, Silver.
