Frances R. Salters
Frances Richburg Salters, 54, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 3, 1948, in Manning, she was the daughter of Oree McKinney Richburg and the late Leroy Richburg. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was employed at Clarendon Retirement Village in Manning until her health failed. Early in life, she accepted Christ and joined Mt. Calvary F.B.H. Church where she served as secretary of Sunday school and the usher board. Later she joined Bethel AME Church.

Survivors include one son, the Rev. Dr. Michael Richburg of Manning; one daughter, Stacie A. Salters of Manning; four brothers, Freddie (Catherine) Richburg, Jasper (Christine) Richburg, and Levan Richburg, of Manning, and Rommy Richburg of Bloomfield, N.J., one sister, Rhunett (Larry) Billups of Manning; a special friend Willie Pearson; and two grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning. The Rev. Alford Heyward, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Drs. Michael Richburg and Cokley Richburg and the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat.

Burial was held in the Bethel AME Church cemetery.

Thelma R. Mims
Sumter – Thelma Riley Mims, 76, widow of Needham J. Mims Sr., died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Riley and the late Ida Mae Lowder Riley. Mrs. Mims was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include two sons; the Rev. Needham J. “Jerry” Mims Jr., (Sue) of Blackville, S.C., and Robert L. “Bobby” Mims (Deborah) of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Ann Christmas (Wayne) of Sumter; a sister, Doris Abrams of Summerton; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 4 p.m., Saturday, June 14, 2003, in the chapel of Elmore Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Revs. Larry Christopher, Clyde Chan, and Jerry Mims officiated.

Tommie J. Barfield
Tommie J. Barfield, 72, husband of Josephine Curry Barfield, died, Friday, June 6, 2003, at his residence.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Jack L. Barfield and the late Tasker Lucille Welch Barfield. Mr. Barfield attended Pocalla Holiness Church and was a self-employed farmer and mechanic.

Survivors include his wife of Sumter; four sons, Tommy Larry Barfield of Manning, Robert Lee Barfield of Warner Robbins, Ga., Ricky O’Neil Barfield of Sumter, and Leon Barfield of Sumter; a daughter, Joan Pfeifer of Sumter; a sister, Anna Mahoney of Wilmington, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Willie Jack Barfield; a brother, Harvey Barfield and two sisters, Odessie Tiedemann and Sherry Dennis.

Services were at 3 p.m. on June 9, at Pocalla Holiness Church. The Rev. Tim Hudson officiated.

Burial followed in the New Town Baptist Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

Mary L. Bateman
Sumter – Mary Elizabeth Lynam Bateman, 94, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, in the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Elliott Huger “Zeke” Lynman and the late Mamie Brinkley Lynam. Mrs. Bateman was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Constance Herbert Bible Class, and the United Methodist Women of the church. She was a retired home economics teacher with Sumter School District 17, and was one of the first Headstart teachers in Sumter. Mrs. Bateman served as a teacher for over 45 years. She was a graduate of McLaurin Girls High School and Winthrop College. She was a member of the Evening Pilot Club of Sumter, the Winthrop Daughters, the Winthrop College Alumni Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was also a member of the Sumter Home Economics Club, the Iris Garden Club and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Survivors include a son, Jimmy Bateman (Bootsie) of Manning; a brother, Billy Lynam Jr., of Sumter; five grandchildren, Mitzi Lowe (David) of Charlotte, N.C., Debbie Jasinski (Mike) of Lawrenceville, Ga., Stevie Pace of Granite Falls, N.C., Tami Eleftheriou (Nick) of Bluffton and Jamie Bateman (Ashley) of Sumter; five great-grandchildren; a cousin, Kingman Lynam (Jane) of Alabama; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on June 6 in the Sumter Cemetery. The Revs. Phil Jones and George Gain officiated.

Pallbearers included Bill Lynam, Tommy Lynam, Zeke Lynam, Frank Brown, Van Hobbs, Vandy Hobbs, Ben Lynam and Allister Brown.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, S.C. 29150, or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 1372 White Oak Dr., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Mildred J. Brunson
Mildred Juanita “Link” Brunson, 80, widow of Charlie Brunson Sr., died Monday, June 2, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 21, 1923, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Filmore and Florence McFadden Filmore.

Survivors include four sons, Perry Brunson of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Douglas and Charlie Brunson Jr., of Summerton, and Willie Filmore of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; four daughters, Judy, Oprah, Sadie Mae and Lillie Mae Brunson, of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; 31 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. on June 7 at King Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Johnnie Gilliam officiated.

Burial followed in St. Mark Memorial Garden Cemetery.

JoAnn DuBose
JoAnn DuBose, 53, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at her home in Manning.

Born July 4, 1949, in Ft. Valley, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Harold Charlton and Edna Mae Morris DuBose. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, and received a Master’s Degree from Clemson University. She was a sixth grade school teacher with Clarendon School District 2, and a member of Manning United Methodist Church. She formerly taught in the Greenville County Public Schools. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Survivors include one brother; William H. “Sonny” DuBose of Columbia; one niece, Sabre Simone DuBose of Woodstock, Ga.; two nephews, Dr. Jon DuBose (Stefanie) of Greenville, N.C., and Chris DuBose (Natalie) of Suwanee, Ga.: three great nieces, Abbey, Lauryn and Hannah DuBose; one great nephew, Ashby Lee DuBose; and beloved sister-in-law, Joan DuBose of Anderson.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m., June 7, in the Manning United Methodist Church. The Revs. Debra Quilling, Murray Gibbons and Fred Treaster officiated. Burial followed in the New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Maxie Knowlton, Terry Benton, Winston Hodge, Tommy Infinger, Benton Blakeley and Don Morris. Honorary pallbearers included Jerry Coker, Wadene Morris, Bill DuBose, Phillip Morris, Roger Morris and Tommy Benton.

Memorials may be made to the Manning United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C., 29102.

Carlisle L. Mouzon
Carlisle L. Mouzon, 59, died Friday, June 6, 2003, in McLeod Regional Hospital in Florence.

Born July 21, 1943, in Charleston, he was the son of Alvena J. Stuart Mouzon and the late Wilbur Lory Mouzon. He was a retired electronics engineer for Motorola.

Survivors include his mother of Charleston, one son, Carl Mouzon Jr., of Kennesaw, Ga.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

Marie M. Addison
Marie Myers Addison, 83, widow of Walter Randolph Addison, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Home.

Born July 23, 1918, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late H.J. Myers and the late Laura Geddings Myers Porter. She was a member of Santee Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Maranda A. Arnold of Clemson; a son, Edwin Addison of Clermont, Fla.; a sister, Christina Meier of Charleston; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday in Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

Burial followed in McLeod United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Santee Baptist Church, c/o Rev. Jimmy Eldreth, 1057 Davis St., Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter 29150.

Lavern Brown
A. Lavern Brown, 80, husband of Elizabeth Cook Brown, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at his residence after an illness.

Mr. Brown was born June 11, 1923, in Marion County. He was the son of the late W. Arthur Brown and the late Alice Alford Brown. Mr. Brown had worked for Belk for 37 1/2 years and was a manager for Aberdeen Outlet Stores for 10 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. Mr. Brown was a graduate of Mullins High School. He enjoyed fishing, working in his garden, and loved to watch the Atlanta Braves play baseball. His grandchildren will fondly remember him for the times that he played with them. Many people will remember Mr. Brown for his wit. He was a member of Gapway Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and a member of the Men’s Bible Class.

Survivors, besides his wife, include his children; Beverly Brown Proctor (Freddie), of Mullins, Franklin Brown (Judy) of Manning, and Bryan Brown and his friend Joni Long of Mullins; his grandchildren Chris Proctor, Cameron Proctor, Timmy Brown, Julie Brown, Derek Brown, Beth Brown Barnhill, Bridget Brown Porter, Brandon Brown and Meaghan Long; five great-grandchildren; a brother Don Brown of Mullins; and five sisters Grace Capps of Myrtle Beach, Ruby Pittman of Conway, Dortherine Tate of Matthews, N.C., Jean Harrelson and Lois Permenter of Mullins.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Gapway Baptist Church. The Rev. Chip Scruggs officiated.

Burial followed in Devotion Gardens Cemetery.

Dianne S. Hodge
Dianne Shirer Hodge, 56, wife of Robbie Hodge, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born Sept. 26, 1946, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John “Jack” Alexander and Vivienne E. Waits Shirer. She was a retired loan officer in the banking industry, and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of Manning, two daughters; Mitzi Dickson Boyce (Bryant), of Timmonsville, and Lynn Dickson of Manning; two stepsons, Badge Baker (Laura) of Florence, and Rob Hodge (Leslie), of Hickory, N.C.; brother, Alex Shirer and (Rosanna), of Alcolu; two grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.

Services were held Thursday, June 12, 2003, at 2 p.m., at Manning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Debra Quilling officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Frederick W. Hook Jr.
Frederick William “Bill” Hook Jr., 64, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, after a prolonged illness resulting from an accidental fall.

He was a native of Manning and a graduate of Furman University, where he was inducted into Blue Key Honorary Fraternity and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He was a veteran of the armed forces and for the past 30 years, worked for the Social Security Administration in Delray Beach, Fla. He was very active in various community organizations and community programs.

Survivors include his mother, Jacqueline R. Hook of Manning and Mt. Pleasant; one aunt, Janet Ingle of Mt. Pleasant; one uncle, Lewis Hook of Sumter; a sister, Janet Floyd of Lake City; two brothers, Charles Hook of Mt. Pleasant and Robert Hook of Alexandria, Va.; four nieces; a nephew, and several great nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 14, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The College of Dental Medicine’s Habitat for Humanity House, 173 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC 29425.
