Willie Lawson Sr.
Willie Lawson Sr., 70, widower of Margaret Ragin Lawson, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born July 15, 1932, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Eugene “Dean” Lawson and Emma Wilder Lawson. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he accepted Christ and became a lifelong member of Santee AME Church. He worked for Erosion Control and Daniel Construction as a laborer and heavy machine operator.

Survivors include three sons, Willie (Mardell) Lawson Jr., Jammie (Marilyn) Lawson of Summerton, and Emouna Lee (Susan) Lawson of Kennisaw, Ga.; one daughter, Susie Mae (Mickey) Carter of Summerton; three grandchildren he reared as his own, Courtney Carter, Curtis Lawson and Marcus Lawson, of Summerton; two brothers, Julius Lawson of Philadelphia and Burgess (Macdine) Lawson of Walterboro; five additional grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. Three brothers, Joe Lawson, Joe Louis Lawson, and Felix Lawson preceded him in death.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Santee AME Church, Santee community, Summerton. The Rev. Silas Spann officiated, assisted by the Rev. David Lawson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included the men of the church and friends of the family.

Floral bearers included the ladies of the church and friends of the family.

Ora Lee B. Smalls
Ora Lee Brown Smalls, 50, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born Jan. 9, 1953, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Georgiaretta Nelson Brown and the late Charlie Brown and stepdaughter of Samuel McCants. She was a graduate of East Clarendon High School in Turbeville, Class of 1973. She was employed by Wateree Community Actions for a number of years, where she also drove a bus. She was a member of Howard Chapel AME Church, where she sang in the gospel choir.

Survivors besides her mother and stepfather include two sons, Darrel K. Brown and Clayton J. Smalls Jr. of the home; two brothers, Albert Brown of Manning and Timothy (Rosetta) Brown of Fort Hood, Texas; a sister, Francis (James Montgomery) Brown of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Edward Brown and Robert Samuel Brown.

Services were held noon Saturday at Howard Chapel AME Church, New Zion, with Pastor Edward Roberts officiating, assisted by the Revs. Leroy Wheeler and Lucious Wheeler.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Lee Corbett
Lee Ila Harrell Corbett, 81, widow of James Harold Corbett, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at her home in Paxville.

Born Oct. 29, 1921, in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late George Wally and Allie Beck Locklair Harrell. She was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women for over 55 years.

Survivors include three sons; Wayne Rippy and wife, Norma of Summerton, Kenneth Rippy and wife, Carol of Newport News, Va., and Harold Corbett and wife, Nina of Paxville; a daughter Linda Bradley and husband, Steven of Rembert; a sister, Beulah Mims of Turbeville; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Baggett of Columbia, Margaret Harrell of Florence and Esther Corbett Felder of Sumter; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Virginia Cox, Louise Lowder, and Lulabell Burgess.

Services were at 4 p.m. Monday at the Paxville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Broomall officiated.

Burial followed in the Paxville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Paxville United Methodist Church, 1130 McLeod Rd., Paxville, S.C. 29102, or to Hospice care of the Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Rd., Sumter, S.C. 29150. The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Dr. Phillip Brandt and his staff for their excellent care and to Tri-County Hospice.

Jessie H. Doub
Lexington – Jessie Hutchens Doub, 89, wife of the late Lester Wiburn Doub, died Thursday, May 15, 2003. Born in Yadkin County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late George Thomas and Sarah Della Poindexter Hutchens. A charter member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, she was also a member of First Baptist Church of Eutawville.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. “Bob” and Bettie Doub of Manning; daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Bill Broome of West Columbia; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A son, David R. Doub; and a great-grandson, Adam Doub, preceded her in death.

Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers included the grandsons and great-grandsons.

Memorials may be made to Crescent Hill Baptist Church or to a charity of one’s choice.

Herbert Griffin
Herbert Griffin, 72, husband of Grace Gainey Griffin, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at his residence.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late E. Collins Griffin Sr., and the late Martha Mae McLeod Griffin. He was the retired owner and operater of Herbert Griffin and Sons Construction Company.

Survivors include his wife of Sumter; four sons, Jerome Griffin, Bruce Griffin and his wife Donna, Chris Griffin and his wife Wendie, and Michael Griffin and his wife Tina of Sumter; a daughter, Gail Carter and her husband Jeff of Sumter; two brothers, L.W. Griffin and John H. Griffin Sr. of Sumter; two sisters, Eileen Ross of Sumter, and Louise Turner of Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren, Beverly Baker, Jeremy Griffin, Heath Griffin, Kim Smith, Robin Parker, Shelly Griffin, Lance Proctor, and Dane Griffin; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Donnie Collins and Rodney Hord officiating.

Pallbearers were Lance Proctor, Jeremy Griffin, Dane Griffin, Heath Griffin, Kent Turner, and George Griffin.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

James A. Hodge Sr.
James Alfred Hodge Sr., 49, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at his home in the Home Branch community of Manning.

Born April 16,1954, in Sumter, he was the son of the late James Thomas “J.T.” and Ivanell DuBose Hodge. He was a truckdriver for Blythewood Oil in Blythewood, S.C., a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany and Panama, and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, James Alfred Hodge Jr. of Lexington; a daughter, April Hodge Harmon and her husband, Adam of Gilbert; four sisters, Virginia Bryant of Neeses, Mae Pack of Sumter, Johnnie Geddings and her husband, Tony of Sumter, Harriet Locklair and her husband, William of Alcolu; three brothers, Thomas Bryant of Darlington, Dwight Bryant of Highland, N.C. and Michael Bryant of Cameron; and an aunt Theresa Hodge of Sumter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Barney Hodge.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.

Burial followed in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Sumter County.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, South Carolina Office, P.O. Box 23128, Columbia, SC 29224-3128.

Drip Nelson
Drip “Sidney” Nelson, 87, husband of Joyce Dingle Nelson, died Monday, May 12, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born April 18, 1916, in the Jim Pond section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Wash Nelson and Laura Ann McFadden Nelson. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. James AME Church, where he served in many capacities until his health failed. He worked at the Maryland Dry Docks, City of Miami, and was a retired farmer.

Survivors, include his wife, Joyce D. Nelson of the home; two sons, Lee H. Nelson of Coral Springs, Fla., and Jack (Audrey) Dingle of Summerton; two daughters, Janie (Preston) Tooks of Baltimore, Md., Alma R. (Dennis) Mull of Buffalo, N.Y.; and a brother, Charlie Nelson of Washington, D.C.; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and one niece he reared as his own, Gloria Dingle. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Thomas Sr., Frances, John, Richard and Hamilton Nelson; and one sister, Queen N. Hammett.

Services were at 1 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill AME Church with the Rev. R.L. Brown, pastor of St. James AME, officiating, Pastor O.C. Blue presiding, the Revs. Dennis Mull and Harold Conyers assisting.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Mary J. Ralph
Mary Elizabeth Jackson Ralph, 82, wife of Donald Leo Ralph, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born July 5, 1920, in Angola, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Paul and Marjorie Harmon Jackson. She was a graduate of Tri-State University in Angola, Ind., was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Manning chapter, and was employed for a number of years as a traffic clerk by WYMB radio station in Manning.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, a sister, Pauline Smith of Cleveland, Ohio, a brother, Ronald J. Jackson of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and a grandson, Edward L. Ralph of Florence. A son, Donald P. Ralph, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., today in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Stephen Bowe will be officiating, assisted by the Rev. Carroll Waddell. Burial will follow at noon in the National Cemetery in Florence.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1794 Old Georgetown Rd., Manning, S.C. 29102.

H. Albert Yarborough
Sumter – Henry Albert Yarborough, 74, husband of Geraldine Floyd Yarborough, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 19,1929, in Lake City, he was the son of the late Bill Yarborough and the late Carrie Blackmon Yarborough Kolb. He was first married to the late Grace Yarborough. He was a roofing contractor for 55 years in Sumter, owner and founder of Yarborough Roofing, and a member of Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife of Sumter; four sons Wayne Yarborough, Mark Yarborough, Cale Yarborough and Eric Yarborough of Sumter; two daughters, Vivian Browder of Sumter and Linda Gordley of Georgetown, Ky.; three stepsons, Terry Edwards, Douglas Edwards and Jerry Edwards of Sumter; a brother Calvin Kolb of Sumter; twelve grandchildren and six great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles and Bill Yarborough; and a daughter Brenda Strickland.

Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church on U.S. Hwy. 378. The Revs. Bobby Driggers and Donnie Collins officiated.

Burial followed in St. John United Methodist Church Cemetery in the Springhill Community of Lee County.

Pallbearers included Mark Yarborough, Frank Strickland, Bill Gordley, Ray Tobias, Tommy Godwin and Jerry Stone. Honorary pallbearers were Cale Yarborough, David Gordley, Chris Kolb, David Kolb, Chad Hudson, Mark Miles and Jerome McCall.

Memorials may be made to Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 1931, Sumter, SC 29151.

Francis Duch
Bayonne, N.J. – Francis Duch, 75, of Manning, died at his home Tuesday, May 20, 2003. Mass for Francis Duch was held Saturday, May 24, 2003, at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Bayonne.

He was the beloved son of the late William Duch and Stephanie Kovalski Duch. Born in Bayonne, N.J., he lived there for many years before moving to Manning in 1990. Duch was a mailman for the U.S. Postal Service, Bayonne, for 25 years, retiring in 1988. After his retirement, he designed and manufactured violins and dulcimers at home. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy McAlary; a nephew, James McAlary; a niece, Ellen Wisolmerski; and six grandnieces.

G. Keenen O’Brien Funeral Home Inc. of Bayonne was in charge of arrangements.

Claude C. Richburg
The Rev. Claude C. Richburg, husband of Mrs. Gwendolyn Oliver Richburg, died Monday, May 26, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter

Born March 21, 1924, he was a son of the late Mr. Richard Richburg and the late Mrs. Lurena Montgomery Richburg. He served as a minister in the Seventh and Second Episcopal Districts of the AME Church for several years and returned to the Northeast Conference, where he retired in 1993. He was field supervisor for the Migrant Ministry of the Virginia council of churches.

Survivors, besides his wife, Mrs. Gwendolyn Oliver Richburg of Summerton, includes two daughters, Mrs. Lydia Ragin of Baltimore and Mrs. Claudette Lewis (Paul) of Smyrna, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Hamilton (Dewey) of Manning and Mrs. Lucretia Ragins of Sumter; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James E. Richburg, Richard Richburg and Willie G. Richburg; and two sisters, Beulah M. Richburg and Ethel R. Tindal.

Services were at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Friendship AME Church, Silver community. The Revs. Dr. Henry Cohen, Joseph Postell, Robert Galloway, Edith DeLaine, Ceasar Richburg, and Ashley Vaughn officiated the service.

Burial followed in Friendship AME Church cemetery.
