Wilma Ann White
Wilma Ann White, 56, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia.

Born Nov 23, 1946, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Ethel White. She was a graduate of Manning Training School. She became a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in her youth. After moving to Philadelphia, she became a member of Christian Tabernacle Church, where she served as a member of the Sunday school and missionary society. She was employed by Internal Revenue, Navy Defense Department, and First Union Bank of Philadelphia.

Survivors include one son; Charles Council and companion, Shirley Witherspoon, of Manning; one uncle, Willie White of Manning; two aunts, Shirley (Bennie) Keels of Manning and Robbie Lee Simon of Philadelphia; and five grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m., Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers included men of the church and friends of the family.

Floral bearers included the ladies of the church and friends of the family.

Pearl B. Richburg
Pearl Baggett Richburg, 89, widow of Joe Edward Richburg, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at her home in Manning.

Born Dec. 2, 1912, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Calvin Hartwell Baggett and Julia Parker Baggett. She was a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Ruth Robinson of Orangeburg and Irene Brewer and husband Bill of Manning; two sons, Harold Richburg and wife Nancy of Tupelo, Miss., and Bobby Richburg and wife Mackey of Lugoff; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Stacey Richburg; and a son-in-law, Rennie Robinson.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kenneth Upright and Rev. Walt Phillips officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Hal Richburg, Chris Richburg, Marshall Robinson, Steven Robinson, Don Robinson, Mickey Brewer, Mike Brewer and Joe Richburg.

Memorials may be made to the Clarendon Pilot Club “Alzheimer’s Program,” P.O. Box 495, Manning, S.C. 29102 or Hospice Care of the Tri-County, 1236 B Wilson Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, 2761 Liberty Church Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Russell Ragin Sr.
Russell Ragin Sr., 89, widow of Mrs. Bertha Servance Ragin, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.

He was born March 5, 1914, in Clarendon County, son of the late Mrs. Margret Shrieff Ragin and the late Mr. Daniel Ragin.

Mr. Ragin was a member of Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church, served as chairman of the Deacon Board, was a member of the Executive Committee, Manning Branch NAACP and Brotherly Love Lodge No. 99 F&AM. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include two sons, Luther Ragin (Vertell) of Manning, and Robert Ragin (Rita) of Clarksville, Tenn.; a daughter, Virginia Finlayson (Samuel) of El Paso, Texas; one brother, Mr. Woodlow Ragin of Summerton; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Haynesworth of Manning and Ms. Gussie Ragin of Jacksonville, Fla.; fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Three children, two brothers, and three sisters, preceded him in death.

Services were held Monday, June 30, at 3 p.m., at the Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church of the Bloomville community.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Allie G. Phifer Jr.
Allie Glenn Phifer Jr., 45, died on Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital.

He was born in Sumter, the son of Dr. Allie G. Phifer and the late Lavinia Siddall Phifer. He graduated from Clarendon Hall in Summerton and was a police officer in the Summerton Police Department. Glenn was most importantly a sweetheart. He was always kind, loving, thoughtful, and ready to share anything he had with anybody. He loved his family and the Lord with all his heart. He was very proud to be a member of the Summerton Police Department. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force. A good example of his giving spirit and sweet nature was displayed as he rushed to the aid of the people in New York after Sept. 11, 2001. All he ever wanted to do was help people and make people fell better. He was the best example of a completely unselfish person. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Sumter and a current member of the Summerton Baptist Church.

Survivors include, in addition to his father, two sisters; Christie Phifer Timmerman (Shelden) of Rock Hill, and Louisa Phifer of Upland, Calif.; and two nieces, Kristin Timmerman and Lindsay Timmerman of Rock Hill. His mother, Lavinia Siddall Phifer, preceded him in death.

A graveside service was held Friday, June 27, at 4 p.m. at the Sumter Cemetery. The Rev. Rob Pierce officiated the service.

Honorary pallbearers included the Summerton Police Department.

Memorial may be made to the Summerton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, SC 29148.

Irene F. Page
BONHAM, Tex. – Irene Felder Page, 85, widow of Watson F. Page, died June 23, 2003.

Born in Sumter and of the Methodist faith, she was the daughter of the late James Ira Felder and Mamie Chandler Felder. After graduating from Tuomey Hospital’s Nursing School, Page did her post-graduate work at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She was a R.N. associated with hospitals in Pontiac, Mich., Medical College of VA-Richmond, Va., Duke and Watts Hospitals in Durham, N.C., and Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning, from which she retired in 1982. During WWII, she served as a first lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps and worked with the Veterans Administration after the war.

Survivors include a son, William S. Page II (Mary Ann); two grandsons, Alexander and Michael page of Gober, Tex., Stepbrother Joe Barwick (Leila), step sisters Maizie Prestwich (Gordon) and Peggy Montalbano (Jim), and also two nephews Willard Felder (Eva) and James Felder Jr. (Dotsie), of Sumter. A brother James C. Felder Sr., a sister Marian Monson, and a stepmother Lorena B. Felder, preceded her in death.

A memorial service was held on June 25, at Wise Funeral Home in Bonham. Burial followed at 2 p.m., in the Page Plot, Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.

Honorary pallbearers included Alexander and Michael Page, Donald Page, Randy Page, Willard Felder, and James Felder Jr.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to The Bible League, P.O. Box 28000, Chicago, IL 60628.

Johnnie M. McKnight
Johnnie McArther McKnight, 61, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born May 14, 1942, in Florence, he was the son of the late Eddie and Frances McKnight Sr. He attended Manning Training School. He worked as a farmer and for the Coca-Cola Co. in Florence, from where he retired.

Survivors include two brothers; Larry McKnight and Jimmy McKnight; and two sisters, Dorothy M. Plowden, and Lillie M. Lawrence. Siblings, Mary, James, Eddie McKnight Jr., Elijah McKnight, and Loretta Smiling preceded him in death.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 28, at the Fourth Crossroads Baptist Church, Manning. The Rev. G.K. Carter officiated the service. Burial followed in the Fourth Crossroad Church Cemetery.

Ashby Mack Jr.
Ashby Mack Jr., 93, widow of Mrs. Sarah Jones Mack, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at the Windsor Manor Nursing Facility.

He was born April 20, 1910, in Clarendon County. He was the son of the late Mrs. Fannie Ford Mack and the late Mr. Ashby Mack Sr. He was a member of the Green Hill Baptist Church and was a member of the Manning Branch NAACP and a member of the Executive Committee. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Georgia Pacific Corp., for a number of years.

Survivors include sons, James Willie Mack (Mary) and Gene Oliver Mack of Manning, Arthur Lee Mack (Janie) of Antioch Tenn.; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Mack Thames of Manning; a brother, Mr. Phil Mack of New York; twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Services were held Sunday, June 29, at 3 p.m., at the Green Hill Baptist Church, Alcolu. The Revs. W.J. Frierson, Major Lloyd and Queen Darley officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Green Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Harry Lewis
Harry Lewis, 78, widower of Ethel Lee Lewis, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1924, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late William and Janie Johnson Lewis. At an early age, he joined Salem Baptist Church. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. Lewis retired from Black River Electric Coop. After many years of dedicated service and then became a small engine repairman at his home. He was known as the lawnmower man.

Survivors include one son, Timothy Lewis (Charlene) of Anchorage, Alaska; three daughters, Thomasina L. McCrae, Retta Hastie (Eugene) and Patricia Brogdon (Vinson), of Sumter; one brother; two sisters; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, at Salem Baptist Church. The Rev. N. Lamont Newsome officiated the service.

Burial followed at Hillside Memorial Park.

Lawson W. Freeman Sr.
Lawson Wesley Freeman Sr., 88, husband of Eva Annie Bair Freeman, died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born Oct. 30, 1914, in Florence, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Elizabeth Cook Freeman. He was a retired commercial sign painter, a WWII U. S. Army veteran, and attended Santee Baptist Church.

Survivors, besides his wife, include a son, L. W. “Sonny” Freeman Jr.; two daughters, Eleanor Singleton (Bill), and Ginger Singleton (Tony) of Manning; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Two sisters, Alma F. DeBerry and Edna Bailey preceded him in death.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 29, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev Jimmy Eldreth officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers included the deacons of Santee Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Santee Baptist Church, c/o Rev. Jimmy Eldreth, 1057 Davis Street, Manning, SC 29102, or to Hospice of the Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elizabeth B. Dickerson
MAYESVILLE, S.C. – Elizabeth Bradley Dickerson, 99, widow of John Hughie Dickerson Sr., died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at her home.

Born in Mayesville, she was the daughter of the late Dr. William Martin Bradley and the late Lillie Freeland Bradley.

Mrs. Dickerson was a member of Mayesville Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Anderson College and was a former schoolteacher. She was part owner of Bradley’s Grocery in Mayesville and a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, John H. Dickerson Jr. (Helene) of Sumter; two daughters, Barbara Payne (Jack) of Panama City, Fla., and Betsy D. Hatcher (Billy) of Gaffney; three special granddaughters, whom she raised as her own, Pamela J. Stukes (Lionel) of Summerton, Victoria J. Bryant (Dennis), of the home, and Cherry J. Johnson (Don) of Mayesville; a sister, Annie Babb of Charleston; a sister-in-law, Gladys W. Bradley of Mayesville; 12 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a nephew, Dr. Robert E. Babb III of Charleston; and a niece, Janice Doutin of Charleston. A brother, Isaac W. Bradley; and a sister, Lillian Bradley preceded her in death.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 28, at the Mayesville Black River Cemetery. The Revs. Brian Peake and Dr. D. McNab Morrison officiated the service.

Pallbearers included the grandsons, and W. G. Thibodeau. Honorary pallbearers were elders of the church.
