Reuben Utley Sr.
GREELEYVILE – Reuben Utley Sr., 83, husband of Elizabeth Prince Utley, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Palmetto-Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born May 20, 1920 in Fuquay Springs, N. C., he was the son of the late Nathan Utley and Cora Crowder Utley.

He received his education in the public schools of Fuquay Springs. At an early age, he joined Providence Baptist Church in Fuquay Springs. In 1977, he moved to Manning and that same year he joined Pine Grove AME Church. He served as a class leader, trustee, pastor steward and was a member of the Sunday school. Fender and Sons employed him for 35 years in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Survivors, besides his wife, include a son, Reuben Utley Jr. of Brooklyn; two daughters, Marie Scott (Bishop Joseph) of Philadelphia, and Margaret Utley of Bronx N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Pauline Prince of Manning; two sisters; Essie Sutton of Baltimore, and Letha Johnson of Brooklyn; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Otis, Marvin, and Nathaniel Utley; and one sister, Vashtie Winston, preceded him in death.

Services were held Saturday, June 28, at 3:30 p.m., at the Pine Grove AME Church in Greeleyville. The Rev. Francis Gathers, pastor, officiated the services, assisted by the Revs. Rufus Gaymon and Leroy Green.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Willie L. Billups
Willie Luther Billups, 75, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 4, 1928 in the Live Oak section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Clyde and Elease Stokes Billups. He was employed for many years with Santee and J. F. Clerkley Highway Construction Company of Orangeburg. At an early age, he joined Rock Hill Baptist Church where he accepted Christ as his personal savior. He served faithfully until his health failed.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Sweat Billups; two sons, James “Bo” Billups (Sharon) of Manning, and Kevin Billups (Barbara) of San Antonio; three brothers, Herbert Billups (Ida Mae) and Mood Billups, of Manning, and Loneral Billups (Carrie Bell) of Bridgeport, Conn.; two sisters, Gladys Gibson and Ruth Hilton, of Manning; as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Two sons, Wilbur and Willie Billups Jr.; four brothers, Timothy, Joe, Wiley and Clyde Billups Jr.; and two sisters, Edna Jackson, and Marie Witherspoon preceded him in death.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Rock Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Leon Winn, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Major Lloyd, and Evangelist Elizabeth Richburg.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Martha M. Hendrix
Martha Pauline McGuire Hendrix, 85, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born March 16, 1918, in Buffalo Valley, Okla., she was the daughter of the late W. E. and Lavenia Springs McGuire. She was retired from Denton State School in Denton Texas, and was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Lavenia Ardis (James) of Pinewood; a half-sister, Diane McGuire Stringer of Owasso, Okla.; two half brothers, Dr. W. E. McGuire of Moore, Okla., and Rutherford “Ruddy” McGuire of Alabama; two grandchildren, Jimmy Ardis of Sumter and Melody A. Ardis of Pinewood; a great grandson, J. J. Ardis of Phoenix, Ariz.; a great granddaughter, Kattie Lavenia Ardis of Pinewood.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Hwy 378 E., Turbeville, SC 29162.

Margaret Henry
Margaret “Mutt” Henry, 66, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility.

Born June 11, 1937, in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Maggie and Mitchell Washington and the adopted daughter of the late Robert and Alva Davis Henry.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Jackson of S.C.; seven sisters, Lillie Mae, Daisy Belle, and Louvinia, of of S.C., Rosa and Lubertha of Pa., Carrie of N.C., and Susie of N. Y.; four brothers, Jessie, Allan Jr. and Bennie of of S.C., and Jessie of Wash., D.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two special friends, Sammie of S.C. and Hattie Plowden; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held on Saturday, July 5, at 11 a.m. at Job’s Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., Sumter. The Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. officiated the service.

Burial followed in Mayesville Cemetery, Mayesville.

Baby Marissa E. Lewis
Baby Marissa Elizabeth Lewis, 6 days old, died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at MUSC, Charleston.

Born June 23, 2003, at MUSC, Charleston, she was the daughter of Michael Lewis Jr. and Nyetta Hill Lewis.

Survivors, besides her parents, include one sister, Porsha Lewis of Charleston; grandparents, George and Elizabeth Hill of Sumter, Maxine Pearson of Manning and Michael Lewis Sr. of Bronx, N.Y.; great-grandparents Bertha Hill of Sumter, Willean Hilton of Manning and Sarah Lewis of Albany, Ga.; and a host of other special relatives.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jamar Lewis; and one sister, Monique Lewis.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, at Job’s Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, SC 29154.

David Farmer
David Farmer, 76, died, Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville.

Born July 22, 1926, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Major Logan and Rebecca Farmer Logan Johnson. He was raised by the late Obie Farmer and Pickney Major.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church and later joined Salem Baptist Church where he was a member of the senior choir, the senior usher board and the brotherhood choir. He was also a member of the International Masons, Pride of Sumter Lodge Number 035. Farmer retired from Georgia Pacific, Inc., after many years of service.

Survivors include one son, Joseph Samuel (Cathy) of Sumter; three stepsons, David Samuel (Elizabeth), and Frankie Lee Samuel (Mary) of Sumter, and William Samuel (Darlene) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Rebecca Parrott (Larry) and Agnes Jennings (Raymon) of Sumter; one stepdaughter, Minnie Pearl Johnson of Paxville; three sisters, Bessie Baxter, Mazelle Ford (Henry), and Ruby Scott (Willard) of Sumter; 24 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 12, at Salem Baptist Church in Sumter. The Rev. Dr. N. Lamont Newsom, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Evangelist Savitra McFadden, the Rev. Dr. L. Winn and the Rev. Leroy T. James.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Thelma B. Furse
Thelma Broadway Thomas Furse, 95, widow of Benjamin B. Furse, and first married to the late John S. Thomas, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born Sept. 13, 1907, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late Judson F. and Maude Hilton Broadway Coskrey. She was a former secretary and retired buyer for Capital Department Store in Sumter, and a member and choir member of Summerton Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Billie Bradham of Sumter and Helen T. Owen of Florence; a son, John E. Thomas of Sumter; a half-sister, Mary Bell of Hartsville; eleven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. A son, James D. Thomas, preceded her in death.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 13, in Summerton Baptist Church. The Revs. Rob Pierce and Thomas Mellette officiated the service.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers included the grandsons and a great-grandson.

Joseph Gaymon
Joseph Gaymon, son of the late David L. and Rosa L. Boyd Gaymon, was born on Aug. 18, 1951, in Clarendon County. On Thursday, July 3, 2003, after a short illness, Gaymon entered into eternal rest at the Castle Point Veteran Hospital in West Chester, N.Y.

He attended Manchester High School in Pinewood, and later moved to Port Chester, N.Y., where he completed his education. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy.

Survivors include a daughter, Devetta Threadgill (Anthony) Tanner Jr. of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Tasia, Tamara, Anthony T. and Torrance Tanner; two brothers, David Gaymon of Jacksonville Fla., and Marion Gaymon of Mercerville, N. J.; two sisters, Willistine Gaymon of Riverside, Calif. and Juanita Mitchell (Johnny) of Jacksonville. A brother, Edward L. Gaymon, preceded him in death.

Services were held on Friday, July 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Community Funeral Home in Sumter. The Rev. Willie Green officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd.

Burial followed in St. Mark Baptist Church Cemetery in Silver.

JoAnne F. Hoppes
JoAnne Frierson Hoppes, 50, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Andrea, Penn. Born on Jan. 5, 1953, in Manning, she was the daughter of Flander “Bogan” Frierson and Lee Haley Frierson.

Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Janice Carter and Maxine Ridgeway of Manning; three brothers, James, Jerry, and Marion Frierson of Manning.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 19, at Clarendon Church of God in Manning, Hwy 301, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Donnie Newton will be officiating the service.

Dr. James J. Lewis Jr.
Dr. James Jefferson Lewis Jr., 80, husband of Mildred DuBose Haley Lewis, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born Jan. 18, 1923, in Florence, he was the son of the late James Jefferson Lewis Sr. and Margie Sears Lewis. He was a retired dentist, having practiced in Charleston and Manning, a WWII Army veteran, and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Manning; four stepdaughters, Eleanor H. Selph of Myrtle Beach, Hazel H. Dupre of Carmi, Idaho, Mavis H. Holliday of Sumter and Brenda H. Flora of Columbia.

Graveside services were held at 4 p.m., Friday, July 11, in Manning Cemetery. The Rev. Bennie Turner officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Clara D. Prince
Clara Comilla Dow Prince, 70, widow of Charlie Prince Sr., died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born May 24, 1933, in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Mary Gilyard Dow. She received her formal education at Goodwill Parochial School. At an early age, she sought the need for a personal savior and joined Goodwill Baptist Church. She was a very caring and loving person.

Survivors include three sons, James Prince (Sarah) of Manning, Isiah Prince (Minnie) of Alcolu and David Prince (Crystal) of High Point, N. C.; four daughters, Mary Samuels (Frankie Lee) of Sumter, Ernestine Wilson (Michael) and Yvette Prince, of Alcolu, and Sellerstine Prince of Augusta, Ga.; two brothers, Harry and Jimmy Dow, both of Manning; two sisters, Susan Richardson (Alfred) of Columbia, and Dorothy Dingle (Moses) of Manning; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two grandchildren that she reared as her own, Kendall Prince and LaShara Y. Felder, of the home. One daughter, Almeta Prince; three brothers, Esau, Thomas and Charlie Dow Jr.; and one granddaughter, Sarah Denise Prince preceded her in death.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 10, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning. The Rev. Jonathan Anderson officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Dr. Leon Winn and Northern Miller and Evangelist Dorothy Miller. Burial followed in Hilton Cemetery in the Jordan community of Manning.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Floral bearers were her granddaughters.

Moses L. Green
Moses Lee Green, 42, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

He was born Dec. 5, 1960, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County. Mr. Green was the son of the late Moses “Skyes” Clark and Viola Hammett Felder, and was reared by the late Richard and Robertha Hammett Green. He was a graduate of Sumter High School. He attended Sunday School and worship services at Green Hill Baptist Church in Alcolu. He was employed by the City of Bradenton, Fla., and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Military.

Survivors include 11 sisters, Loretta Clark of Washington, D.C., Barbara Jean Clark, Annie Jewel Clark and Sheila Marie Clark of Manning, Mary Harrison (Mose) and Hester Way (Alexander) of Alcolu; Louvenia Felder of Sumter, Ruth Felder of Bridgeport, Conn., Lillie Mae Johnson (Roosevelt), Pinease Robinson (Frank), Bernice Clark of Buffalo, N.Y.; nine brothers, Edward Clark of Manning; Kenneth Clark of Rochester, N.Y.; Joseph Clark, Robert Lee (Robbie) Clark and John Pete Clark (Helen) of Newark, N.J.; three adopted brothers, Clyde Green (Vera) of Huachuca, Ariz., Richard Green III of Sumter, Willie L. Green (Ernestine) of Alcolu; two sisters, Evelyn Green and Loris Green of Sumter.

A brother, Charles Clarke; and two sisters, Hattie P. Felder and Ethel R. Young, preceded him in death.

The services were held at 4 p.m., July 29, at Samuels Funeral Home in Manning. Rev. W.J. Frierson officiated the service. Burial followed in Greenville Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu.
