Shadon Q. Bowman
Shadon Quindell Bowman, 1 year and 8 days old, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born July 11, 2002, at Palmetto-Richland Medical Center, Columbia, he was the son of Alphonso Quindell Bowman Jr. and Serena Diane Exum.

Survivors include his paternal grandfather, Alphonso Bowman Sr. of Manning, Theresa Jernigan of Baltimore; maternal grandmother, Clarice Exum of Baltimore; paternal great-grandfather, Elder Eugene (Dora) Bowman of Manning; maternal great-grandfather, Eddie (Josephine) Winstead of Baltimore; maternal great-grandparents, Harvey (Goldie) Griffin of Baltimore; and one sister, Shakira M. Bowman of Manning.

Services were held at 2 p.m., July 24, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning. Shepard R. Grant officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Carolina-Johnson Cemetery in the Wyboo community, Manning.

Robert E. Ray
Robert Ellis Ray, 75, husband of Louise Harrington Ray, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at his home in Greeleyville.

Born Aug. 1, 1927, in Scranton, S.C., he was the son of the late Lonnie and Canzie Belle Powell Ray. He was retired from Albany International in St. Stephens, a U. S. Army veteran, and a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church.

Survivors, besides his wife, include two sons, Paul Ray of Manning and Daring Powell of Greeleyville; a daughter, Rosie Osborne of Salters; six stepdaughters, Edna Moody, Debbie Ray and Sadie Ray of Greeleyville, Kathie Ard and Becky Ardis of Manning, and Linda Proctor of Piedmont, Ala.; a special niece, Bessie Howard Craven of Marietta, Ga.; twelve step-grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 17, in Greeleyville Baptist Church. The Rev. Grover Mixon officiated the service.

Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Memorial may be made to the Greeleyville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 276, Greeleyville, SC 29056.

Joseph Oliver
DISTRICT HEIGHTS, MD. - Joseph Oliver, 71, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Doctor’s Hospital, in Lanham, Md.

Born Aug. 30, 1931, in the St. Paul community of Clarendon County, he was a son of Sallie Oliver Washington of Summerton. He attended Clarendon School District 1 and Denmark Trade School. He was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army. He retired from the federal government after 336 years of service. In his youth, he was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church. After moving to Maryland, he joined Mt. Morial Baptist Church.

Survivors, besides his mother of Summerton, include a host of relatives and friends.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 17, at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton. The Rev. Malachi L. Duncan officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Walter Williams.

Burial followed in the Church Cemetery.

Jesse H. Johnson
Jesse Hayward Johnson, 37, died, Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Healthcare in Columbia.

Born Oct. 8, 1965, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Willie Mae Johnson. He attended the public school in Manning. Camp Grounds Highway 260 employed him. He joined Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist church at an early age.

Survivors include one brother, Johnny L. Johnson; and one sister, Ruby Johnson.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday July 17 at Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in the Jordan community of Manning. Pastor C. Witherspoon officiated the service.

Burial followed in Carolina Johnson Cemetery.

Dr. Fred Clarence Inman, Jr.
CARLISLE, Ark. — Dr. Fred Clarence Inman, Jr., age 81, died July 15, 2003.

Dr. Inman graduated from Arkadelphia High School, attended Henderson State Teachers College and was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and University of Arkansas School of Medicine.

He served in the Army 153rd Infantry, Co. H., during WWII and retired at the rank of colonel after 46 years of service with the Army National Guard. He was a member of Carlisle First United Methodist Church, American Medical Association, life member of Arkansas Medical Society and member of Arkansas Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Inman was in family practice for 10 years in McCrory and 35 years in Carlisle.

Survivors include his wife, Sarabelle Atkinson Inman of Carlisle, Ark.; sons, Dr. Fred C. Inman, III (Paula), of Cabot, Ark.; Mark H. Inman (Patti), of Bentonville, Ark.; daughters, Sara M. “Missy” Hunt of Carlisle, Ark. and Frances Carol Dowell (Cleve), of Manning; five grandsons, six granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, seven nephews and three nieces. Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred C. and Mayme Hall Inman, and his brother, Dr. Robert L. Inman.

Funeral services were Friday, July 18, 2003, at Carlisle First United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Carlisle Cemetery. Arrangements were by Boyd Funeral Home of Lonoke, Ark.

Norma H. Forbes
Norma Halvorsen Forbes, 84, widow of James LeRoy Forbes, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at her home.

Born in Lily, S.D., she was the daughter of the late Gustave Halvorsen and the late Anna Sannes Halvorsen. She was a member of the Paxville United Methodist Church. Her life was a gift to her family, friends, and anyone who knew her. She had a special talent for creating a warm and loving home in any part of the world from Panama to Newfoundland. A graduate from Nettleton Business College, she was more than a proficient secretary as she put her whole self into helping not only her employers, but all those she encountered, both old and young, working as a WWII military, medical, church, and Headstart secretary.

She instinctively put her family and friends’ needs before her own and recognized even the smallest kindness with sincere gratitude. She will be remembered for her loving heart, her ability to see the good in everyone, and her gift of finding humor in any situation. Her caring and generous spirit has always been and will continue to be a model and cohesive bond for her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, James Roger Forbes (Claudia) of Oneonta, N.Y., Raymond Lawrence Forbes (Traci) of Manning, Mark Allen Forbes (Lynn) of Columbia; two daughters, Linda Laine Lee of Anchorage, Alaska, and Roberta Jewell Jackson (Raymond) of Richmond, Ky.; a daughter-in-law, Lorrene Forbes of Kenai, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A son, David Wayne Forbes; a daughter, Janyce Leanna Forbes Brannum; and eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 21 in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Rev. Dick Broomall officiated the service.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Her sons and grandsons; James Owen Forbes, Liam Owen Forbes, Duncan Ross Forbes, Bryan Douglas Lee, Christopher Adam Jackson, Spencer Hamilton Jackson, Ethan Thomas Forbes, Adam James Forbes, Raymond Marcus Forbes, and great-grandsons, Christopher Parker Jackson and Patrick Logan Jackson.

Her family wishes to thank those friends who have given their mother such love, joy, and faithfulness through out her life.

Memorials may be made to the David Forbes Memorial Scholarship, in care of Kenai Peninsula College, 34820 College Drive, Soldotna, AK 99669, or to the Paxville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 203, Pinewood, SC 29125.

D. Wallace Cantey
David Wallace Cantey, 71, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in a Columbia hospital.

Cantey was born in New Zion, a son of the late Lillian Epps Cantey and Sallie Tharp Cantey. He attended New Zion schools and was a retired truck driver. Cantey served in Korea in the U.S. Marines. He was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Vickie C. Barbee of Durham, N.C.; a son, Barry R. Cantey of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Catherine C. Rodgers and Sybil C. Parrott of Kingstree; a brother, Bennie Fallie of Manning; and two grandchildren.

Memorial service was held at 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 21, at Midway Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church, 12183 Black River Road, New Zion, SC 29111.

W. Craig Bagnal
William Craig Bagnal, 16, son of Billy Bagnal and Sharon Dukes Bagnal Brinson, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Craig was born Aug. 6, 1986, in Charleston, and was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors, besides his mother and stepfather, Anthony Brinson, of Manning, and his father of Southside, Tenn., include a sister, Audrey Elizabeth Bagnal of Manning; maternal grandparents, Harold and Naomi Geddings Dukes of Manning; maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Mamie Geddings of Manning; and special aunt, Tami Dukes Wynne of Manning.

Services were held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, July 17 in Home Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. John Hall officiated the service.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Home Branch Baptist Church, 2348 Home Branch Road, Manning, SC 29102.

Lula M. Thames
Lula Mae Barnes Thames, 88, widow of Ben Oliver Thames, died Friday, July 11, 2003, in Hopewell Healthcare in Sumter.

Born June 28, 1915, in Wilson, she was the daughter of the late David Dinkins Barnes and the late Katherine Tucker Barnes. She was retired from Valdese Weavers in Valdese, N.C., and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mildred Thames of Valdese, N.C.; a grandson, Robert Allen Thames of Valdese, N.C.; a brother, Clyde Barnes of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; three sisters, Ada Hodge of Ninety-Six, Dora Lee Ardis of Wedgefield, and Jeanette Hardy of St. Stephens; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ben Oliver Thames Jr., and a daughter, Mary Emma Thames.

Arthur B. Jones
Arthur “Buck” Jones, 79, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late Thomas F. Jones and Emma Elizabeth Wilson Jones. Mr. Jones attended Eastside Baptist Church and was retired from Richardson Monument Company.

Survivors include several cousins, loving neighbors, and special friends, Mrs. Pressely, Gwen Davis, Billy and Virginia Helms, all of which loved him dearly.

Private services will be held at a later date.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to the Sumter County Department of Social Services for their assistance to Jones over the past years.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Geneva L. Lawson
Geneva (Dy) Lemon Lawson, 73, widow of Willie Lawson Jr., died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Oct. 15, 1929, in the Goat Island section of Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Nelson and Aline Lemon. She received her formal education in the public schools of Summerton. In her youth, she joined the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, serving diligently in many capacities of the church.

Survivors include six sons, the Rev. Willie T. (Mattie) Lawson of Fort Washington, Md., Minister Johnnie L. (Lee Nora) Lawson, the Rev. David (Virginia) Lawson, Michael Lawson and Daryl Lawson of Summerton, foster son Ralph Mouzon of Summerton; six daughters, Willie Mae Lawson and Barbara (Ronald) Nelson of Hollywood, Fla., Dorothy (Harry) James, Lorene (the Rev. Marco) Johnson, Kara Lawson and Patricia Lawson of Summerton; two brothers, Willie (Gertie) Sessions of Baltimore and Alfonza Starks of Summerton; one sister, Gladys Cunningham of Dania, Fla.; 35 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three grandsons that she reared into adult hood, Terrance Lawson of Hollywood, Fla., Sgt. Kenjii L. Johnson (USMC), and Arvis Williams of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by six children.

Services were held at 2 p.m., July 23, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, U.S. 301, South Summerton. The Rev. David Lawson officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Willie T. Lawson, the Rev. Marco Johnson, the Rev. O’Donald Dingle and Minister Johnnie L. Lawson.

Burial followed in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Taw Caw section of Summerton.
