Ellie W. Green
Lynchburg - Ellie Woodrow Green, 87, of the Trinity community of Sumter County, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at a local nursing center.

Born July 18, 1915, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Cornelius Vanderbuilt Green and the late Susan Emmaline Tomlinson Green. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Methodist Church in the Trinity community and was a retired farmer. He worked with the USDA Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for 22 years, and served on the County Office Committee for several terms. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Sumter County Farm Bureau and was a charter member of the Sportsman Hunting Club.

He was married to the late Jessie Eugenia Campbell Green then later to the late Elizabeth Norris Mims Green.

Survivors include one son, Ellie W. Green Jr. and wife, Diane, of Lynchburg; six daughters, Margie G. Carey and husband, Bill, of Charlotte, N.C., Jewell G. Gibbons and husband, George Thomas, of Sumter, Willodene G. Blackman and husband, Bernard, and Annelle G. Powell of Turbeville; Paula G. Schofield and husband, Marshall, of Florence, June G. Graham and husband, Al, of Lynchburg; one brother, Barron H. Green of Lynchburg; one sister, Carrie G. Johnson of Lynchburg; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Methodist Church, 2170 Trinity Road, with the Rev. Jim Ridenhour officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons Tracy Turner, Billy Carey, Kenneth Yates, David Jordan, Will Mims and Don Green.

Joan L. Harvin
Joan Lumpkin Harvin, wife of William Burgess Harvin, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, in Tuomey Healthcare Systems in Sumter.

Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Bryan Hopkins and Frances Herren Lumpkin. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and was Miss Garnet and Black 1947. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning, where she was a former deacon, Sunday school and Bible school teacher, and was very active in The Women of the Church. Jean was an avid antiques collector, gardener, and former aerobics instructor. All who knew her loved her and her delightful sense of humor. She was deeply compassionate and had a genuine love for others.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include two daughters, Jeanie Harvin Edwards of Anderson and Nancy Ingram Harvin of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sons, William Burgess Harvin Jr. of Woodland Hills, Calif., Bryan LeGrand Harvin of Dothan, Ala., and U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Samuel Oliver Harvin and wife, Jan, of Bel Air, Md.; a sister, Ann L. Brunson of Alcolu; a brother, Joseph H. Lumpkin of Columbia; and five grandchildren, William Harvin Edwards, Caroline Bartlett Edwards, Benjamin Edwin Harvin Edwards, Stephanie Bakos Phillips and Alexandria Brianne Harvin.

Services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in The Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Robert H. Morris Sr.
Newnan, Ga. - Robert Hoover Morris Sr., 73, died April 16, 2003.

Born May 30, 1929, in Manning, he was the son of Martin Azro and Cleo Ann Tennet Morris.

Survivors include his wife, Cathleen Morris of Newnan, Ga.; three sons, Robert Hoover Morris Jr. and his wife, Joni, and Scott Eric Morris Sr. of Newnan, and James Richard Morris and his wife, Lynn, of Carrolton, Ga.; a sister, Cleo Ann Cauthen of Columbia, S.C.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel in Newnan, Ga.

Burial followed in College Park Cemetery.

Mary L. Clark
Sumter - Mary Alice Lemon Clark, 47, wife of the Rev. Harry Clark, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at her home, 8 Cecil St.

Born Nov. 4, 1955, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Mary Ann Lemon and the late Howard Holliday. She received her formal education in Clarendon County and graduated from Manning High School in 1974. She attended Allen University in Columbia and was employed by Yanagawa Corp.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Rodney Lemon and Randolph Lemon of Manning; a stepson, Marcus Clark of Fort Stewart, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Theresa D. Clark of Watervaliet, N.Y., and Stephanie Clark of the home; four brothers, James Lemon of Willingboro, N.J., Howard Holliday Jr. and Bishop Raymond Holliday of Manning and Julian Holliday of New York; two sisters, Dorothy Graham of Boston and Rosa Ann Canty of New York; a mother-in-law, Essie Clark of Sumter; and a second mother, Lucille Henry.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Mansville, with the Rev. Willie Wright Jr. officiating, assisted by the Revs. Ashley Vaughn, Harry Clark, James Robinson and Eugene Thomas, Bishop Raymond Holliday, and Minister Ethel Lemon.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were her cousins.

Floral bearers were the members of Manning High School Class of 1974 and her co-workers.

Mary S. Green
Mary Ruth “Mic” Smith Green, 58, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at a Sumter hospital after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Charlie Dorn Smith Sr., and Effie Robinson Smith. She was a graduate of Converse College and a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Green of Turbeville; a son, Jack Green Jr., of Turbeville; two sisters, Dr. Kate E. Smith of Turbeville, and Jean Daniel of Raleigh, N.C. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Dorn Smith Jr.

Funeral services were at 4 p.m. on June 5 at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Olive Grove Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Olive Grove Church, P.O. Box 183, Turbeville, S.C., 29162.

Ingram Rush
Olanta – Ingram “Hambone” Rush, 77, husband of Beatrice O’Neal Rush, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, in the Lake City Healthcare Center in Scranton.

Born Nov. 25, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Wesley Williams Rush and Vermell McFadden Rush. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a farmer all of his life. He was a lifelong member of Oak Grove AME Church, where he was a former member of the steward board.

Survivors include two sons, Felix (Jackie) Singletary of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Stanley (Elthean) Fulmore of Olanta; one sister-in-law, Itlean McElveen of Olanta; three brothers-in-law, Bill (Barbara Ann) McDowell of Oxford, N.C., Keith Rose of Sumter, and Clarence White of Philadelphia; four sisters, Nancy McFadden and Mozell S. Rose of Olanta, Bessie Lee White of Sumter and Lucille (Harry) McKenzie of Turbeville; and two grandchildren.

Services were at 3 p.m. June 5 at Oak Grove AME Church on Burnt Branch Road in Turbeville. The Rev. Oliver Davis, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Samuel Burgess and Evangelist Minnie Pearl Johnson.

Burial followed in Old McFadden Cemetery.

Lois G. Pitts
Sumter – Lois Goodman Pitts, 92, widow of Julius Mood Pitts, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, in Dunwoody, Ga.

Born June 27, 1910, in High Point, N.C., she was a daughter of the late William Dorsey and Lalah Craver Goodman. She was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sumter. Mrs. Pitts was an avid bridge and piano player and an active volunteer in her retirement community.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Pitts Betchman (“Billy” Pinckney), and Sally Pitts Taylor of Newnan, Ga.; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Pitts Monroe Harris.

Graveside services were held privately at 2 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2003, in Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Kappa Alpha Order (Clemson University), “The Delta Omicron Chapter,” National Administrative Office, P.O. Box 1865, Lexington, VA 24450.

Barney L. Ward
Barney Lynwood Ward, 73, husband of Kathleen Hawes Drescher Ward, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Oct. 10, 1929, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Barney and Ethel Lucille Cutter Ward. He was a member of Manning First Baptist Church, an Army veteran of the Korean War, retired from the Sunbeam Corporation, and a retired self-employed industrial contractor.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning, are one son; Joey Lynwood Ward of Manning; seven daughters, Lynda Ward, Pamela W. (Robert) Flagler, Cindy Vincent, Tammie L. Ward and Linda D. (Marty) Jones, of Manning, Susan D. (David) Green of Irmo, Cheri W. (Robert) Richardson of Orangeburg; two brothers, Herman Ward of Vance and Carl Ward of Manning; one sister, Gladys W. Ball of Phoenix, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Two brothers Sherrill and Lydell Ward preceded him in death.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home.

Burial followed in Ward Cemetery. The Rev. Danny Bridges officiated.

Pallbearers included grandsons, and friends of the family.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210, or to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102.

Mary B. Curtis
Mary Elizabeth Bond Curtis, 101, widow of LeRoy Melvin Curtis, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 20. 1901, in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Louis Charles and Rosa Bail Bond. She attended Winthrop College, and was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church, and a life member of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosa Ella Curtis Daniels of Manning; three grandchildren, L. Curtis (Miranda) Arnold of Clemson, Elizabeth Daniels (Michael) Lawson of Easley and James C. Daniels of Manning; three great-grandchildren, Adrianne Arnold, Caroline Lawson, and Cameron Lawson; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

The Rev. Richard A. Broomall officiated the service.

Honorary pallbearers included the Men of Paxville United Methodist Church.

Memorial may be made to Paxville United Methodist Church, 1130 McLeod Rd., Manning SC 29102, or to Cypress Foundation of Clarendon Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 550, Manning, SC 29102.

Francis Smith
ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. - Francis Smith, 83, husband of Eleanor Gill Smith, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at the home of his daughter in Houston.

Born Aug. 4, 1919, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Richard and Minnie Brunson Smith.

Survivors, besides his wife, include one daughter, Francis St. Amand of Houston; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends.

A son, Richard Smith; three sisters, Rosa Smith, Eliza Holland, and Mary Connor; and five brothers, Bernie, Bennie, Richard, Robert, and Jeb Smith preceded him in death.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 28, at the Second Presbyterian Church, Elizabethtown, N.C. The Rev. Arnold Walker officiated the service.

Burial followed at 4 p.m. in the Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Summerton. The Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiated.
